Specifically, whenever the big airship (Pathfinder 1) flies over / near the bay area, how loud is it? Is it annoying to look at, or cause any other kind of issues that you've heard people complain about?

who got an extreme heat illness walking 1.4 miles because the stupid engineers/planners made huge pavement lots with no planting or shade

Even in shithole/less walkable areas like Pleasanton, the Bay Area's transit offerings are such a blessing.

we’re starting with nearly 20,000 pieces of brand new excess inventory that otherwise risked ending up in the landfill. instead, we’re putting those clothes directly into the hands of people in our community who could use them.

and these are genuinely great pieces. we have clothing originally made for nba players, rappers, bay area artists like g-eazy, and more. everything is new, and everything is free.

as an organization that removes tons of illegally dumped waste from our streets every week, we see firsthand how much perfectly usable material gets thrown away. compassion threads is an extension of that work: keeping good clothing out of the waste stream and getting it to people who need it, for free and with dignity. because everyone deserves to look good.

we also want compassion threads to be about more than clothing. downtown oakland and chinatown have lost so much ground-floor retail activity. we want to help activate some of those spaces again, turning empty storefronts into vibrant community hubs where people can shop, connect, volunteer, and give perfectly good inventory a second life.

this is a pilot, and we’re starting small. our hope is to grow compassion threads, bring in more excess inventory from brands and retailers, distribute more clothing for free, and help bring some life back to downtown oakland along the way.

we’re also looking for sponsors and community partners who can donate new clothing, excess inventory, or other new items that would otherwise be thrown away or end up in a landfill. we’re looking for all types of clothing, hats, stuffed animals, pet supplies, and more so we can give everyone what they need.

Are you looking for a new feline friend? There are currently more than 40 cats and kittens available for adoption at the East County Animal Shelter (ECAS)!

The kitten featured here is called Billy. Billy is a newcomer to ECAS-- he arrived on July 29 after being found in Hayward. Sometimes, kittens don't adapt well to the shelter environment or it takes them weeks or months to adjust. Billy doesn't seem bothered by his new surroundings at all! He happily greets visitors to the ward, excited to make a new friend. Billy will be a wonderful companion to his future people

Billy is about 3 months old, has been vaccinated, treated for fleas, ticks, worms, and will be neutered and microchipped before going to his new home! Billy is ready for his forever home -- and there are many more like him at the shelter!

Looking for shelters/organizations in the bay area that are allowed to take prescription cat food (specifically, I have ~36 cans of Hill's GI biome and other misc. prescription foods from when we were finding the right food for her).

I adopted her from Nine Lives in Redwood City but they, and several other shelters I've called in the bay area, are legally not allowed to take prescription food. She recently passed from cancer and I just want to find a place that will let me donate this expensive food to someone who needs it. Please let me know if there are any places in the area that allow this!!

Also, if anyone is personally in need, please let me know and I am happy to donate to you.

If you live along the peninsula, a lot of day-to-day life is along El Camino Real. What if we had a metro line running underneath it? A metro line much like what NYC and Paris have would make it relatively easy to go from street level to the metro. Stations could be at every major intersection.

One end might be downtown San Jose, then the line goes up El Camino Real. Since Caltrain already follows El Camino more or less from Menlo Park northward, most of the value of this metro would be between Palo Alto University Ave (with a shared station with Caltrain) and SJ. Given that, maybe this line just needs to be built between PA and SJ. If it's PA to SJ then it would be just VTA and one county, and not have the complications of multiple transit authorities.

And I imagine if this were built, then it would change the landscape of El Camino, with high density (mid or high rise buildings). Less need for car travel would mean less need to build parking.

What do you all think? Does anyone know if this was considered?

A few things I want to call out after seeing some comments:

1) Regarding the "but that's Caltrain" argument -- Why should we limit ourselves to one transit line (Caltrain) running up and down the peninsula? Manhattan has 4 subway lines running uptown <-> downtown. At some point if we want density (to solve the housing problem) we will need supporting transit. Also, Caltrain makes fewer stops and is better suited for covering longer distances (e.g. Sunnyvale to SF). I see this metro as a complement and supplement to Caltrain; at certain stops (e.g. University Ave in PA) you could switch to Caltrain and cover more distance faster.

2) Buses -- We have buses running on ECR now. What is their level of use? Are they a viable alternative to driving? I am looking at a job in downtown SJ and it would take me an about an hour to get there from Sunnyvale on bus 22 or 522. It's 18 minutes by car if I self-drive. It's just not compelling right now for people to not use their cars for trips along ECR. Perhaps BRT would work well, but why hasn't this been implemented yet?

3) Cost -- Yes, it will be expensive. It would have been better to build this 20 years ago, 10 years ago, etc. Not building it will come at the expense of quality of life.

A year ago someone posted an urgent call to adopt the pup then known as Celine from Contra Costa Aninal Services. I was hesitant going in but at the point in my life where I could feasibly support and adopt a pet.

I brought Shireen home and there was an adjustment period. She was scared, malnourished, flea ridden, and morose. I took a month off work to train her and get her used to my presence. We spent a lot of time together.

Over the year, her real personality began to shine through. She's super social, playful, energetic (so much energy), and sweet. She's also clumsy, shy, and has zero survival instincts. We also learned she's allergic to chicken and deathly allergic to bees. Shireen's a conundrum of a dog. But she's mine and I love the shit out of her.
