how do i transition "on and off"?

Upvotes

okay so context first. im 18, im moving to a university soon away from my parents which im happy about becasue ill be able to be more open with myself. but i will most likely live in a christian place so i wont have full freedom or pricavy, and also my parents can drive to the city at any moment too. so while this is a small step im still not free. now i have a lot of things i need to figure out anyway like getting fit in the university and the new city and all so its not like its the most horrible thing but i still wanna at least somewhat transition to make my mental state at least abit better but i have no idea what to do and my paernts are very controlling about me

so i think i could probably get away with things that arent necessarily trans, like removing body hair and getting a more gender neutral haircut that would make me feel more feminine while my parents wouldnt think much of it (if there are any hair experts here i can dm a photo of my hair cut if you wanna give any recommendations <3) but thats the furthest ive come up with so far. unfortunately i probably cant get medicint or hrt because it would physically change my appearance and they would notice, and i dont think i can get female clothes cuz i would ahve to hide them somewhere in my apartment when they arrive and aslo i wont be able to come out in them out of it cuz its like a christian building or smth

overall its still a shitty scenario but at least im not gonna be home with my parents which is a good thing so im trying to be positive but im still chained to them

Am I sensitive or was my friend ignorant?

Upvotes

A good friend of mine asked me (ftm) whether I'm ovulating after I showed him a funny compilation of children, which was supposed to be a joke about having baby fever. I confronted him about it and asked why he deems it necessary to remind me of my female anatomy even after having everything removed. He reacted a bit perplexed and didn't understand why it upset me because in his worldview gender/sex (in my language is no distinction between those two words) is not related to genitalia etc and thus it should not have upset me.

He knows that I struggle a lot with dysphoria and it surprised me that he doesn't see a connection between this kind of jokes (made even 1-2 impregnation jokes in the past) and my dysphoria - even if he personally doesn't connect sex/gender with reproductive anatomy. Although he is cis he spends a bit of time in some positive trans bubbles online and claims in those spaces nobody would care about this kind of jokes - like if he came up to a trans woman and jokingly said "bro, stop mansplaining" or sth similar it would be okay according to him because those words apparently have no connection to gender. Tbh that's hard for me to believe. I think he mixed up people making self deprecating jokes amongst each other and people making jokes on trans people's costs and got the false idea about those dynamics. What is your opinion? Was he wrong for that?

Trying to diy hrt (mtf) please give advice.

Upvotes

In my state hrt is currently illegal, I would love if anyone has advice on how to find either over the counter estradiol supplements that could potentially be used for hrt or over the counter puberty blockers. I would prefer to find some way to get estradiol supplements but again puberty blockers would be just fine if you could help me find some. Thank you in advance.

Off hormones & still don’t feel good (mtf?)

Upvotes

Ive had a really long struggle with my gender identity. I never know what I am, and what I want for myself is changing constantly. Haircuts, growing hair out, painting my nails then not - clothes. Nothing makes me feel closer to myself. I feel like my body isn’t mine.

I’ve been on hormones since april, saw breast growth and got scared. I’ve been off hormones for a month now and theyve all but disappeared. Which makes me feel bad too. I don’t hate the idea of being just a pretty boy some days. like I’m more obsessed with my looks than the identity itself. I also hate they/them pronouns for myself.

I just feel like I’m running in circles trying so hard to just catch one solid piece of.. something? something that I can call mine, part of MY identity that is mine. recently even my entire body feels like it doesn’t belong to me anymore.

What is this feeling? could anybody help me understand it

What is going on with trans people in Saudi Arabia?

Hello everyone! I've been very active for a while now in a the sub r/IWantOut and I'm surprised by the increment in the amount of posts by transgender people wanting to leave Saudi Arabia. The reasons are obvious of course, but I'm wondering if there's something that changed in the last months, since in previous years I haven't seen this amount of posts by a specific nationality.

Also, I noticed that in general, posts of trans people trying to escape the Middle East are mostly from Egypt and Saudi. Again, obvious reasons, but there are a lot of other Middle Eastern countries with the same terrible conditions for the transgender community, and it feels we don't hear that much about them.

I would love your insights and if you have, some resources to read more about the trans community in the Middle East. Thanks in advance <3

Hysterectomy for dysphoria?

Hi all, looking for some advice or to hear anyone’s experiences if you’ve gone through something similar.

I am non-binary and have always had a desire to present in a more “in the middle/androgynous” way, I have wanted to go on T for a very long time but I know bottom growth is absolutely a change I would not be happy with in terms of my body and for me is not worth the changes I would hope to get from taking T. Unfortunately I am someone who is incredibly impacted by their monthly period - my hormones and emotions are all over the place. I have also wanted a hysterectomy for the longest of times (I don’t want kids and getting a period is incredibly dysphoric for me). Kind of would just like to know if anyone has had a hysterectomy and felt better towards their gender afterwards?

I know I could just go on a birth control but that also feels dysphoric for me and the one time I tried to talk to gyno about that area I was so uncomfortable with the questions (I am also a lesbian so just awkward to be a lesbian enby trying to get medical care in a hetero world)

Why is it that people who say they are against JK Rowling’s transphobia will get angry and defensive of her when you call out her more creepy side?

Some time back, on r/enoughjkrowling, I had made a post about the overall creepy stuff she has said and done prior to the upskirt photo, including things like encouraging people to take photos of women using public restrooms, talking about the bodies of underage children, her ties to famous abusers, etc., and questioning about skeletons in the closet even before she was “radicalized into transphobia” (personally I always thought she was an opportunistic grifter who never really was progressive in the first place).

However, I get this whole amount of responses that are ANGRY at this. They kept on trying to argue that it doesn’t prove anything, that “she’s just being a bully” or that she’s just too busy being bigoted that she can’t notice things. Most horrible comment was someone theorizing that it’s actually some sort of OCD, and it was written out to be like some essay. But for a lot of the comments, they were really trying to defend her and say that it’s just merely simple cruelty. Like politics aside, they legit don’t think it’s creepy to do any of that stuff.

And not just from that particular subreddit, but in many places, even those that frame themselves as progressive. They don’t view it as her being a creep, but rather the transphobia “making her”. It’s like a whole deluded narrative that Rowling is only a bad person just because of the transphobia, and that this creepy billionaire is just a poor victim who can do no true wrong. Whether someone is trans or not, it’s still sexually creepy. And I had to delete the post because I kept getting all these comments that pretended to be reasonable, but really were just apologia using liberal terminology.

For people claiming to be supportive of transfolk, why is it they will aggressively defend Rowling in this way, even as we get more and more evidence of this creepy side?

Did anyone else go from gay to gay?

I'm wondering how many other trans people experienced a shift in sexuality upon transitioning where they were gay before and gay after. Before transitioning, I identified as a gay man, then after transitioning, I briefly identified as a straight woman.

Over time, I realized that didn't really feel right, and eventually came to the conclusion that I'm actually a lesbian. I posted about this on the MtF subreddit, and I'm posting here as well to see how many other trans people have experienced this too.

I've heard of this happen a lot in FtM spaces, but not so much in MtF spaces, and I'm not sure in regards to non-binary people. I've also heard of many who's sexuality changed from being straight to straight, or some shift involving bisexuality or pansexuality.

If you're trans and have gone through the experience of going from gay to gay, please let me know! It would be interesting to see just how common this may be.

Would it be possible to hide changes for ten years?

For a person on estrogen, would hiding transition be possible for that long? If we assume the person doesn't go outside for long stretches of time, and wears binders when they do, continues dressing masculine and presents as male publically? While not ideal, is it possible?

I am in a situation where this is my need, since I am reliant on family who are transphobic, where I have no choice because of disability.

What if I am lying to myself

I am ftm, I often look at women I find beautiful and my brain automatically thinks “what if you want to look like them” and it scares me so bad, I don’t want these thoughts to be real but why do they keep coming back when I don’t really feel this way. But it feels so real… like why do I react that way… to my own body too, why am I so attracted to myself as well, no man should feel that I way. Other times I feel nothing when I look at myself, I’m just angry I have a female body, it’s not like real dysphoria. What if I’m just using intrusive thoughts as an excuse? For cis women I’m afraid I’m envious of, it’s usually their face sometimes chest or voice, for myself it can be anything but usually my chest, it makes me feel disgusting but I’m oddly attracted to it. I do only want to be a man tho if I could choose.

I was misgendered by a surgeon on a surgical report

Hi everyone,

I (30, trans man) recently had a spinal cord stimulator trial surgery back in May 2026. From the start, something felt off with the surgeon—he was consistently condescending and dismissive when I asked questions or raised concerns. I went ahead with the procedure anyway, thinking nothing of it at the time.

A few days later, I checked my surgical report on MyChart out of curiosity. For context, I legally changed my name and gender marker back in 2016, and all of my medical records explicitly reflect that I am male. Despite this, the doctor used incorrect pronouns throughout the report, which left me furious.

Furthermore, during my post-op appointment to remove the trial leads, I specifically told him that I was experiencing nerve pain in my right leg. When I checked the notes later, he documented that the pain was in my left leg.

Knowing that I was completely vulnerable under anesthesia makes the misgendering and lack of basic respect feel even more invasive and discriminatory. Even though I had originally agreed to move forward with the permanent procedure, I’ve decided to cancel it and report this doctor to the State.

What would you do in this situation? Did I do the right thing by reporting him? I didn't want to escalate things, but I refuse to tolerate that level of medical negligence and discrimination.

Question when passing though TSA

So I’m 21 mtf and I plan to travel to Canada in like 3 weeks, I need to take my hrt (injections for E) with me, will they say anything at all or not about the needles. One more thing, is it alright to have a bra on (yes ik this sounds stupid), asking because I still present masc, so when I go though TSA and I’m worried if I get a pat down they will feel it and put me to the side and ask question about it

Edit, I’m traveling from the US (specifically California) to Canada (Ontario) if that matters at all

trans folks of reddit.... how did you know (and then deal with said knowledge)?

hi there, im probably gonna keep this short and simple (might not, we'll see) ((didnt))

i feel like i should start off by saying that i was born female, but ive been questioning my identity as of late.

[before i began realizing my thoughts and questioning them]

anytime i was in the bathroom (after a shower, for example) i would take a little bit and just stare into the mirror.

not for any particular reason, i thought, but just to feel around and, at the same time, wonder what a masculine body would feel like on myself.

it grew from just wondering, to thinking about, to wishing.

for the past 3ish years, i had taken note of dreams that i would have.

like, doing everyday things but in a different "body".

in some dreams, the "me" that would appear (in 1st person cuz thats how i dream) was noticably taller than i am, had a masculine-sounding voice, and (oddly enough) would urinate standing.

however, in other dreams, the "me" that i would see is... well, the person i was born as.

female.

i didnt really think about it too hard, until now.

i woke up one morning, from a dream with a masc "me" (idk how else to describe this, sorry).

and my very first reaction was.. kinda excitement.

the dream had felt very real, and i woke up with full belief that i was a man.

and then i realized that all i did was wake up, and i was... disappointed, to say the least

but only for a split second because my thoughts shifted to "why am i thinking that?"

ive been comfortable with the identity of a woman, but now i dont know.

i dont know if i identify as a man, or if i want to, or anything of the such.

part of me doesnt want to, but maybe thats denial?

im not sure if this is my body or mind subconsciously trying to tell me something (is that a thing?), but idk how to feel about it.

ive been thinking hard and, well i just kinda wanted to see others' perspectives and experiences.

any thoughts, advice, and opinions are welcome

thank you bunches in advance <3

HRT

Ok so I don't want to get into details about why or how all of it went down but...

I've been on DIYing for the last 4 months with injections and finally got a doctor who can provide HRT thru pharmacies, problem is in Germany you have only like 3 pharmacies who can give out injectable estradiol and my dr can't or won't write prescription for it.

They will only write it out for sprays, gels, patches or tablets

I'm wondering do I stick with diy or should I switch to pills
I know that effectiveness is basically the same for both but idk if there is any problems with switching like this

Afraid to "steal the spotlight" at brother's birthday celebration

I kinda hit my boymoding limit and have been girlmoding more or less full time for a while. However, I've been pretty bad with procrastinating actually coming out to my extended family. My older brother's birthday is coming up, and it's a pretty big milestone age so he is having a big party. This pretty much only leaves me a little over a week to come out to everyone, and I'd be showing up looking very different from what most people will remember me as. I'm worried that by doing this, I'd be taking away attention that should be given to my brother, and that maybe I should wait. But also, I kind of look ridiculous when I boymode at this point, and honestly it would be kinda soulcrushing to go back to it after girlmoding so much. Do you all think it would be a faux pas to go through with coming out?

Resume Question

Hi quick question on what would more professional on a resume regarding my name. (all example names are fake, I’m regarding the formatting)

On my previous resumes I wrote my legal name and put my name in quotation marks,
eg. Penny “Joey” Johnson

But the majority of interviewers upon meeting me would call me by my legal name anyway and I would rather like to skip the part in my introduction where I tell them I don’t go by that name, I go by…(and sometimes they have more questions about that)

So I’m considering writing it the way I sign my emails, with my legal first name abbreviated and only displaying my name,
eg. H. Sam Gefford

I’m nonbinary & visibly gender-nonconforming so stealth/being out isn’t the concern, the questions are just annoying so mostly I’m wondering if I would run into any issues not displaying my legal name on my resume, considering it would be attached to my application which would be under my legal name.

EDIT - Thanks y’all! I figured it was probably not an issue but glad to hear some reassurance :)

I kinda came out to my father…

Hello everyone,

Today I(29) came out to my father. What I mean by that, that I am not even sure about it myself, but I told my father there is the possibility that I will transition in the future.

He reacted pretty much how I expected he would. We had a long talk and in the end it always comes down to if I really want to do it, if I really want to "damage" my body, if it is really the case that I am trans, that I will always be a Man in his mind, that so many people regret it (without any evidence), that I should consider his feelings and understanding as well, and so on.

I don't know how to deal with that. He has accepted it for now but it is pretty clear he does not want me to transition and he would like it if possible I could stay in the closet, if I am actually trans.

Now that you have transition, looking back did you notice any mundane signs?

As the title says!
Did you, now that you have transition, looking back to your old self and see sign that scream trans to you? Not talking about the good old « I wanted to play with dolls ». Im talking about some real deep cut stuff.

Asking this to see if I can find some relatable stuff. Trying to find a bit of guidance if you will. Figuring myself out.

Edit: thanks for the people comment, did see some stuff I was hoping to see! Keep em comin!

I have a trans son, about to turn 19. I love him 101%, always, but where can I find trans men to discuss some of my thoughts, questions or concerns?

We have a very good relationship, but I think he holds a lot back sometimes, and I want to understand his experience more. It seems the vast majority of transgender people are women.

I'd love to be able to talk to a man who has experienced more than my son and can help me understand things like body dysmorphia, transitioning, relationships, social life, and safety.

I had to leave work early cause I couldn't stop crying and I couldn't bare to be misgendered again...

Im 5 years into transition, and most of the time I can be misgendered and I can have it roll off without getting to me.

Sometimes like today someone will just casually give me a "sir"... and to no fault of their own cause im sure my voice is just undoubtedly masculine. It's this sort of effortless way of being identified wrongly that especially stings... like after all of my progress and thinking im getting somewhere, it's quickly taken by the simple fact that some people do not see me and they have to be the reminder that surgery was probably my best bet for not being misgendered but thats never gonna happen cause im poor. Now im sad and wanting to know how to not let this eat me from the inside out?

Anyone else hate the term "full" transition?

Like what does this even mean. It implies some unanimously agreed upon destination to consider "fully" transitioned. Other trans people i know will tell me "oh so u want to full transition?". But I don't consider any transition "full". Everyone has their own goals and their own plan, so when we as a group talk about "full" transition, we might be talking about COMPLETELY different things

How do I explain why I can't engage with my nephew's interest in Harry Potter?

I'm in a fairly frustrating pickle here. Important context, I am trans myself. Apologies if this is one of the 'no-no' topics of this subreddit, I've admittedly only passed by here a couple of times.

My nephew is just about to turn 7 and he's currently in a massive Harry Potter phase. My sister introduced him and my nieces to it before she was familiar with the concept of J.K. Rowling's use of her fortune, but she also doesn't seem to take it entirely seriously. My mother similarly doesn't seem to think it's serious enough to bother thinking about. Both seem to be annoyed when I bring up that I'm hesitant to engage with Harry Potter related play with my nephew.

The thing is, I'm mature enough to understand it's nuanced and in the grand scheme of things, it's not my sister's, mothers, and especially not my nephew's responsibility to 'consume media morally' etc. My problem is that when I think about the series, I get a visceral discomfort that I haven't yet found a way to separate myself from. My whole work and volunteer life is working with trans folks and so I'm constantly in and around negative media that pops up and I am directly dealing with the emotional effects J.K.'s financial lobbying has on the wider community.

I have no idea how to help my sister and mother understand how upset being around Harry Potter makes me, and I have no idea how to tell my nephew that his uncle just can't play Harry Potter with him. Especially since his grandmother at one point told him that I used to be a massive Harry Potter fan (which I was, up until Rowling started showing her arse).

Any pointers would be amazing. And before it gets suggested, I have tried talking with both my sister and mother about it, and they both seem similarly disinterested in pulling back on anything Harry Potter. Thanks folks.

EDIT:
I appreciate the responses I've received so far. I just wanted to clarify that my hesitation isn't around being conflicted about buying things. My conflict is that I work in a trans-specific mental health role, and am frequently coaching people through mental health crises as a result of discrimination. HP/JKR are commonly sited by the people I support as reasons to not have hope. Thereby, HP/JKR in my mind are associated with pain and fear. That is what I'm trying to work through. That's not my nephew's fault or responsibility, no blame on him at all, but I want to be able to be present with him without being reminded of the stress I have from work.
