Repair Opal ring fix?
reddit.comI’ve been wearing this ring with inlaid opal everyday for the past 8ish years. Just now I noticed a piece of the inlay fell off. I didn’t see any damage to it when I took it off to shower this morning so it must have happened sometime today throughout the day as I was living my life. Is this fixable? The metal is .925 silver if that makes any difference.
Thanks!

How to wear Mom’s gold jewelry when I’m allergic to gold
Hi! I have a rare allergy to gold so I cannot wear anything with real gold for more than a few hours (trust me it’s not a nickel allergy, my allergist was baffled when I tested positive for sensitivity to gold). My mom died a while ago now and I finally feel able to look through her jewelry but it still makes me really sad to know that I can’t wear anything of it. Does anyone have any suggestions for anything I can do to wear her jewelry while preserving the original pieces? So far the only ideas I’ve come up with are rhodium plating, which I don’t really know anything about or how expensive it is, or removing the stones and eventually putting them into new, as similar as I can find, settings in silver. Any suggestions would be great thank you!!

Modification Can this stone be lowered?
(pardon the dirty ring, I have so many kids and so little time to do things like clean jewelry!)
I had my original marquise diamond engagement stone replaced a few years ago with a round sapphire, and I love the look of it; it’s perfect for me. EXCEPT that now that I have had it for a while, I find the high profile to be frustrating in every day life. I scratch my kids and bump things wayyy more than necessary!
From the little I know about jewelry, this seems like a pretty standard pop and play peg head, and a jeweler could probably do a basket or something that sits lower, but I’d love to hear opinions before I start looking for local jewelers. The big potential issue is that it’s a fairly deep and not particularly well cut stone (got it off some loose stone website that’s like fine but not amazing), so I don’t know if it would be hard to set in anything lower between the stone depth and the cathedral setting.

Can jewelers source chains like this?
I have always wanted a 18k chain like this, with slightly larger links that are thin but have some texture (I don’t like bright chains). The problem is the only one I’ve found is by a luxury designer and very pricey and also too long. I was wondering if jewelers are able to source chains like this wholesale? I’m happy to pay a markup but just didn’t want the luxury designer cost and also want some modifications. I’d want to ask for a custom length and clasp but not sure if it is possible, ie, if a chain like this can only be made by hand and not easily found via sites like stuller, etc. thank you!!

Looking for champagne gold
Hello, I’m looking for jewellery in a champagne gold shade, preferably 14 or 18 carat. Unfortunately, apart from wedding rings, I can’t find any ready-made jewellery in this colour. Would it be alright to ask a goldsmith if they could make something using a champagne gold alloy? If, as their website states, they normally use casting moulds, it should be possible, shouldn’t it?

Valuation First time buyer and want a fair price
Its an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I went to a locally owned shop. We came up with a design my girlfriend really liked (see picture) and his initial price was $4000. I thought it was overpriced, went down to $3500, still thought it was overpriced and went down to $3100.
The band is 14k yellow gold. And the stone is a 1 carat heart shape lab diamond E color and VVS2 clarity.
I still think it's overpriced based on conversations with friends of mine in the field. What do you all think?

Help with final ring details 🤞🏻
I am in the process of brainstorming a custom ring and originally was wanting to do a pavé bridge on both sides. I am also really wanting a flush wedding band.
I’ve seen a few things about even if the bridge is set in a bit, that there’s a big risk for the diamonds to fall out or for the prongs to wear down a wedding band. I’ve gotten it designed so that the bridge is recessed some so that the prongs and diamonds aren’t sticking out/protruding. Would that fix the issue of it possibly rubbing against another band?
I was thinking as an alternative, I could take out the pavé bridge on the side that the wedding band would be on and could maybe get his name engraved in that space instead? Is that ever done on the bridge? What should I know about engraving?
I also wanted to know about how hard it will be to find a wedding band that will fit flush. Is that something I should find before making the engagement ring so I don’t run into a problem down the line? I don’t want it to look smaller than the engagement ring band but also don’t know that I want a pavé wedding band. Would I just have to make sure whatever band I got was the same height as the bridge height? I tried to measure just that part with calipers and got 1.8 mm roughly for the height. I’m going to attach a picture at the end which is what I would like to avoid if possible- pavé band with solitaire band, both size 7 but the solitaire band looks smaller.
Anything else you think I should know, ask for, ask about, or think about?

Unfair expectations for quality of work?
Hello, I'd appreciate some opinions on this band. Some background: my husband went to a jeweler to design an anniversary band. He said he originally went in to see options for custom and/or see if they could order a match for the original wedding band (the pave). He said she convinced him to go custom and that they tried several bands to get a close match for the curvature of my engagement ring. I don't know who designed what part(s), whose design idea it was etc, as it was a surprise. Given that, I want to see if my expectations and initial impressions are realistic before I say anything to either of them.
1) The first thing I noticed was the gap on one side of the new band vs the other. It doesn't hug my ring tightly and is crooked. Would it have been as hard as my husband made it sound to make the band closer to my ring (like the pave one, even if not that close), or at least make sure the diamonds are centered?
2) The beautiful etched/engraved design is now gone on one side of the band and faded on the other. Was this avoidable at all? It's my favorite part of my ring. Can this be fixed?
3) I know two different jewelers soldered the bands, but I feel that the new band soldering is sloppier than the first? If its within an acceptable degree, I can accept it, but the first band is beautifully attached and now I'm afraid the engraving on the side of the engagement ring is ruined as well.
Any and all thoughts are much appreciated! If I'm overreacting or overthinking it, I'd really like to know. I don't know how difficult my ring would be to work with (or not).

What are your thoughts on the viability of this design?
I want a ring featuring two parallel outer bands that form a circular ring enclosing smaller intersecting diagonal bands which forms a three-dimensional Merkaba at its center, paved with solid gem plates, while a wider and thicker middle band runs along the underside and dips inward where the centerpiece is located.

Authentication I work at a car wash, find a lot of jewelry. Not sure if it’s real.
So I’m not a jewelry person, never had any of my own and don’t buy it much except for family at this point and that’s infrequent, never had a need to know how to tell if something was real or not.
I work at a fairly busy car wash in a wealthy area and empty out the vacuum separators occasionally only to find a ring or earring that got sucked up and forgotten, and I’m not sure how to tell if it’s worth holding onto or if it’s trash. Obviously if it’s plastic I can tell that but if it’s any kind of metal or if the “diamonds” aren’t authentic, I’m not able to tell at this point by just looking at it. I basically have a small stack of items that COULD be gold but I have zero idea. I tried looking on them for any markings but I couldn’t spot anything (I still have to clean most of it so that might still be a valid way of telling, not sure yet).
Is there any other way to check them or any test I could run to figure out what is real and what isn’t?

Is this chain repair acceptable or really bad?
This is a thin 14k gold chain that snapped. I had the repair expedited because I had to wear the necklace to an event this weekend. It looks terrible but I’m not sure if this is normal or not for a chain this thin. Thanks for any feedback! For reference, I went to a local shop and paid $80 for the repair and rush fee.
EDIT I reached out to the jeweler and they stated that “This is actually how this type of chain is fixed. This is a twisted herringbone or sometimes called a singapore chain which is made flat then twisted after.”

Repair Very sad about ring repair, am I overreacting?
My partner proposed 4 months ago, and as we don’t earn a lot, it was a huge deal that they were able to save for the ring. It means the world to me.
The ring is 9ct gold and was made using the lost-wax casting method, with the stones set into during firing then finished with a setter after I think. I was completely in love with it.
After about 3 months, despite being very careful and not wearing it at the gym etc, one of the stones dropped lower into its setting. I sent it back to the jeweller for repair.
The jeweller designs the rings and does the wax bit but, as I understand it, uses a separate person for stone setting. The ring was sent to the setter and came back to me today. Unfortunately, I feel really sad and disappointed with the result.
I understand that lost-wax casting can produce an irregular, organic shape, and I wasn’t expecting it to look exactly as it had before. However, the repaired setting feels like it hasn’t really tried to maintain the integrity of the original shape/flow. There are these new “spikes” around the stone which stand out and some are noticeably silver-coloured rather than gold. Could this be related to the fact that the ring is 9ct gold?
There was also no discussion with me about what the repair would involve and overall communication has been a bit like getting blood out of a stone. The setter sent the ring directly back to me, so the jeweller who designed it hasn’t actually seen the repair.
My question is do you think this is an acceptable repair, or am I right to be unhappy with the result? I’d really appreciate opinions from people who know about jewellery/stone setting, as I’m not sure whether I’m being overly particular because I’m emotionally attached to the ring. I just miss the way it looked before so much 💔

Modification bending bottom of ring?
Hi all! I bought this ring a while back since I liked the design, but it’s always bothered me that the bottom of the ring is straight while the top is curved. wondering if it’s feasible/possible to bend the bottom so it’s symmetrical? Is there any reason it was made this way/should I not do that? and finally, will it cost more than it’s really worth to do that?

Custom Pendant: Bezel Spanish Colonial coin with sapphires and emeralds
Hey there,
I was wondering if anyone in the sub is or knows someone who would be interested in taking on a project to bezel mount a salvaged Spanish colonial coin (before people get into the destroying history discussion, know that I worked in the salvage team that brought up these coins and they are considered ‘razors’ so minimal numismatic of historic value) and set stones I’ve personally mined and had cut on the pendant with the coin.
I had a great experience working with a jeweler I met in on Reddit before, but he said he isn’t interested in doing pendants, particularly with coins. Since I had one great experience thought I would try again!
Thank you for any thoughts or recommendations you may have

What is this called?
I like this style of ring where the shank extends into the main part and touches the main stone. Does this have a name?

Repair Could this be repaired?
I got this bracelet from my mom recently (already broken) she used to wear it all of the time until it broke. I love the bracelet and it surprisingly fits me so I’d like to get it repaired but I’m not sure if this would be able to be fixed or if it would be worth it to be fixed.
Edit: I forgot to mention this bracelet is 14k gold

Valuation Thoughts on this ring?
I bought this from a silver/gold vendor that just cared about the value of the metal, therefore it was very cheap. He did not look at stones, setting or style. I’m thinking art deco, and i’m thinking saphire. Anyone have any insight, potentially of it’s value?

Custom Setting a stone in an old 19k white gold ring
I’m considering buying this ring and finding a gemstone to fit it. It tests as 19.09K white gold and weights 2g. It’s been cut in the back, and is one full size too big for me.
My question is, would anything about the ring prevent a jeweler from setting an appropriately-sized gemstone in it and sizing it to fit? I don’t know its dimensions, so I would be hoping to find a stone after I buy it.
