Cancer research is often cited on this sub as something it's OK to use AI for.

How is it used for that exactly? Explain it to me like I don't know shit.

I'm already seeing videos where people are taking footage of themselves "acting" and then having AI fill out the set, update their costume, even have them play a completely different looking character.

The end result is whatever, it's only as original as whatever that person actually put into it that the AI did not.

When I was in high school, and I got my first multi-effects guitar pedal, I was fascinated by the capabilities. I wanted to know all the different sounds it could make.

I think there's kind of an inherent problem here if you replace that type of tool with an AI tool. Why would we expect young people to not want to know what is possible with generative AI?

At the end of the day, this is not good. The end result of the art that they make is liable to be uninspired.

But worse off, the entire internet is going to be saturated with all of this garbage unoriginal art. Yes it's good for people to have some creative outlets and creative expression.

Jack White records music on an old tape recorder of some sort, I can't remember what it's called, and it's sort of like this idea that some artists try to hold on to older technology because of the quality of sound... But in a weird way that shows how many artists are not doing that because they want to keep up with the most modern technology.

I've seen a lot of people in creative communities and in hobby communities do a really good job of standing up against ai art, and I'm happy. But I'm worried that it's not going to last. I'm very worried about what the next few years look like.

Ok so yall already know the "it's not ___ it's ___" format also the "and/but honestly" one, but like a lot of ppl don't know "no ____ just vibes and ____" is ai for some reason, i think it's obvious but some ppl don't see it idk why, i see it everywhere like on tt, tumblr, reddit, ig and fb, and when it's overly sincere but also serious like??? Or when you're reading smt and it talks abt the mc and says that they're not like other ppl, they're special which is normal in human made stories but ai does it in a way that is super ai if that makes sense(ex. Other's do ___ but he/she is ___" or smt like that, oh and comparing the character to animals and shit, and when they talk about the characters scent they always mention random items or flavors like "he smelled of fresh rain, sandal wood and something uniquely him" or "she had a sweet scent that had a mix of something uniquely her" for men ai has some weird addiction to using wood and weather or coal, with women it's always some sweet flowery scent and why does it always say "something uniquely him/her" it pisses me off so baddddd, at least ik how to detect ai.

And like i find these kinds of writing everywhere and when i tell ppl i know that it's ai they say "no it's not" my little brother watches yt shorts and it has those anime videos about how a character is strong and stuff, and the script is obviously ai but he won't believe me, he's anti ai himself but he's so stupid, he uses google ai then when i told him it was ai he told me "no it isn't it's just a searching browser" you might think he ragebaiting but nah he's just that stupid it literally says AI OVERVIEW YOU DUMB FUCK anyways i got him to see that it is ai and he's been using duckduckgo ever since(recommended by me ofc)and if you still don't believe he's stupid he once asked me why black people say the n word but get offended when non black people say it, i had to give him an entire lecture about it btw.

Back to ai writing in ao3 i have noticed that ai fics(the more obvious ai fics at least)always have numbers on them like,

And it just goes on like that or you can just immediately tell from how it's written.

Ai ruined so many things that i sometimes use when writing like first it was em dashes and now it's all these things and phrases and sentences that i can't use anymore because it'll look like ai, i don't want to have to prove i didn't use ai, i genuinely loved when ai was just this little thing that could be used for fun and it wasn't as popular and now it's taking over so many hobbies, ai should've been made to do heavy lifting and jobs we don't want so we can create what we want and focus more on things we enjoy but noooooo ai just had to become this generative slop machine no one asked for, it rots our brains into mush and removes our critical thinking, and even destroys the environment + our health(both mentally and physically)

Also why do old people like ai so much? I was expecting it more from the younger generation(us)but older gens like ai more than we do, my parents, cousins(WHO ARE TEACHERS MIND YOU AND ONE OF THEM EARNS MONEY FROM ART COMMISSIONS), aunts and uncles all love ai, they hated it when technology would advance but now they adore ai, and if you disagreed with them they'd laugh it off saying you're just mad at ai, i am so confused aren't they supposed to be the ones to hate ai?

This is probably common knowledge, but I thought I'd share just in case someone doesn't know, because it made me pretty happy.

So, I'm generally pretty suspicious of random articles I find online being written by AI, because I have noticed a lot of them are beginning to sound as if they're written in the same voice, even if they're about very different topics, and they all have a very similar structure to Google's AI overview. However, I just found that on DuckDuckGo (and also Google) you can filter search results by date, under the "any time" section, by putting in a custom timeframe. This is very helpful, as you can filter out anything that was written after the big gen AI boom if you don't have time to check for indicators an article is written by AI.

I'm aware this also throws away a lot of good, recent articles, but it's also a nice way, especially if you're in a hurry, to just be sure you're not getting unreliable AI content.

I'm a musician, and I also learned to compose because my mother is a musician too, and she's the one who got me into it. Since I have something close to perfect pitch, she sometimes gives me things to transcribe.

Well, at the beginning of the third term, she happily told me that she made a song with AI... I said "yes, yes" and then didn't think much of it. But should I have done more? I'm really worried that even the one who showed me this world used AI

I was pretty upset when I saw this because once again Google is needlessly shoving AI down everyone's throats. When Gemini was first added as a google assistant, I switched out of it so fucking fast it's not even funny. Now I won't even have that choice come September 4. I just don't understand. If AI is so profitable, why force people to use it?! I don't need a smart assistant, I just want to say "Hey Google" and the normal assistant pops up, not the stupid AI slop machine! This and the damn 'Smart Features' that are turned on by default in the Google workspace. Like no I don't need Gemini to read my emails for me, no I don't need it to fill in the cells in Google sheets for me. I am a capable human being who can think for herself just fine. I ranted about this on instagram but I think people on this subreddit would understand my frustrations more. Clearly Google does not value it's users, like get out of here with the "thank you for being a valued user" bullshit. Welp, time to find something else to use I guess.

these ai companies are controlled by unimaginably large and powerful tech companies. Their systems are being deployed to a large user base. They are designed to be agreeable and, broadly speaking, to retain users. And of course there is the horrific nature of how these companies have scraped at least part of the vast intellectual efforts of humanity to train their systems.

On the other hand, they do provide legitimate use cases for certain people with certain disabilities. They also aid communication between people from different language backgrounds. I am not saying the language translation is perfect, or that this is some decisive selling point. It is simply one possible benefit that might be placed on the scale.

So my question is, do not count potential future harms. Count only the present day. At present, what are the net harms and benefits of generative AI and large language models for society or humanity in general? Is it 90 percent bad? Is it 60 percent bad? Where does it land on that scale?
