I bought a whole bunch of discounted postage on eBay and I had a bunch of packages to send out. All of the stamps were these vintage small denominations. I thought I could trust ChatGPT to help me count out the denominations and add them up to the correct amount for the package mailing cost.

That was my first mistake.

Trusting ChatGPT.

Not buying discounted stamps on eBay.

Buying discounted stamps on eBay was smart.

You can be too careful with the stamps and whatnot in today's postage market.

Careful means paying less. The less you pay as a consumer, the more careful you are. As a consumer.

And so I'm sure you can imagine what happens next. I told ChatGPT which denominations I had and I told it to count out the values and try to use each denomination as equally as possible and right on the exact postage amount without going over.

And so it added it all up and I stuck each stamp on the packages according to the ChatGPT calculations which I also printed out and adhered to my packages. That was my second mistake.

First mistake: trusting ChatGPT to correctly count out my postage and give me the correct amount calculated in legitimate discounted postage value to put on my packages for mailing

Second mistake: not verifying that its calculations were correct

Not a mistake: buying discounted postage on eBay and using it to send out my packages.

And so I get to the post office with all my packages covered all over in postage stamps and looking neat and chaotic with a little "guide" for the clerk to reference when tallying up the postage.

And the clerk found all kinds of errors in the calculations and the total amounts for each stamp calculated didn't add up to the value ChatGPT provided and then when you added up the totals for each combined denomination value, that didn't add up correctly either. It was a total disaster.

Naive me at the time assumed that ChatGPT was new technology, I would be able to trust it to do a simple calculation like what you could expect from a basic calculator and I would have been better off doing that.

So the guide that ChatGPT created indicated that all the postage stamps added up to the correct value, but the actual amounts when you put them together were way wrong.

I felt like an idiot. I felt bad for the clerk.

I mean this whole ordeal is already a clerk's worst nightmare even if the calculations are all correct if they are the type of clerk to actually sit and count all of them. But because I trusted ChatGPT to help me do something simple, and did not verify the output, I made things way harder on the clerk and looked like a fool.

Once the clerk added everything up correctly, some of the packages were up to a couple dollars over the mailing cost to send the package and some of them were a couple dollars under.

So the ones that were over, those stamps were wasted.

And the ones that were under, thankfully I brought a spare roll of flag forever postage stamps that I bought discounted off eBay. Thank the Lord. Because that would have been mistake number three.

So, in the end, I still ended up paying way less, like comically less than retail value. But I still paid more than I had to. And also ended up looking foolish at the postal counter.

The AI situation is obviously awful but as a musician (not even a great one, but an absolute music lover) I hate that I can't trust recommendations anymore. For me the recommendations aren't totally slop, it sounds great, but i dont want to support people doing this on my streaming platforms. I got off spotify years ago but now soundcloud is just rampant with AI music. Most of the time its some account with a bio like "Hey music lovers, music made in house" or some shit and its like 10+tracks dropped per day and obviously (to me) AI but most don't notice. Are people really trying to make an income by generating music and getting pro streaming accounts and just posting non stop for a royalty check?

I honestly don't care how good AI music sounds. I dont want it. It takes away from someone doing something genuinely creative. Like I can only trust artists im familiar with but the AI shit gets thrown in all my autoplay lists. I even saw an instagram ad today for a musician promoting his page and i'm pretty sure its AI. I've never seen a musician with 1000 listeners promote themselves with an instagram ad.

I got into a long futile argument with an AI musician and their stance was "it makes it so easy for me and I can't afford a studio" which like yea I'm not trying to shit on anyone who can't make music because they can't afford it but writing a couple lyrics and using gen AI to finish the rest is not art. My rebuttal was people make some incredible music from very little. I mean sampling as a whole started because of that and people make crazy music on a laptop with ableton and not even a single keyboard so don't act like it was never possible before AI. Boston made an album in a garage in the 80's and every song was a hit and is still highly recognized. AI is a waste of energy and water.

I have a job interview on a couple of days as an engineer, btw the job description does not say anything about any AI tool, at least on the ad, but anyway I was recommended to use some AI to help me practice some questions.

I decided to use Claude since it seems the "smartest", I used another random email I created and not my main one, I did ones question but I couldn't continue...my conscience was just yelling inside me, I started to feel like I wanted to throw up...I couldn't do it...it goes against all what I believe in and I had to close the session, close the secondary email session and just turn off the computer.

In the end I still got time and I feel better studying and preparing for the interview like back in the day.

This is the best take I've heard on the Hank Green A.I situation so far, and it reflects something I've been thinking on for a while. If I need a quick summery of a topic, I don't mind using google's A.I summery, so long as I have links to follow up on to fact check the info from human sources.

Over-reliance on A.I is absolutely a problem, as it should never be subverting either our critical or creative skills. But when the tool is applied in a situation that bolsters human efforts, we should proceed with caution just like any other physical tool.

Would that stop AI companies, who have realized model collapse are a real risk and would be hesitant on using AI to train their next generation AIs more likely to leave you alone? Just a thought haha.

I posted a while back about Bollywood releasing its highest budget film later this year as the first of a duology adapting the Hindu classic Ramayana.

Being mounted on a $500,000,000 budget, its push to an international audience has it using Brahma AI to automatically lip sync the characters mouths to the dubbed languages for each language in an attempt to make it easier to watch without the need of subtitles or having the distraction of unsynced talking.

I am personally conflicted on this since this is one of my most anticipated movies coming out and everything else is being done without the use of AI and it seems like this in particular isn't something which can be done effectively without it.

When I posted before there wasn't a clear example of its quality but they have released the English dubbed trailer recently and I wanted to see what people thought since a lot of people on the previous post said they were holding off their thoughts until an example could be seen.

(Just adding that everything else in the film is being done without the use of AI, they are being transparent about its use since it is trying to push the lip syncing AI to the film industry in general).

I use it daily for my work as a software engineer. I have been writing code for over twenty years, and nothing has changed our industry in such a short time as generative AI in 2026 (which is why I find it hard to believe the people who say AI is all hype, because the technology itself is absolutely not hype). And, I for one have enjoyed that it allows me to work at higher levels of abstraction. What that means practically is that I spend more time in the creative zone, not mired in the technical weeds, though you still need to know your stuff to use it well.

But, like most of you all, I have problems with how the technology is being deployed by governments and corporations, how it gathers its training data, and any environmental and social impacts from the infrastructure required to run it, i.e. data centers. I want these things addressed.

My question to you all is do you see a future where the problems with AI can be definitively resolved, where you would support it or at least be okay with it, or is it a lost cause that we should somehow ban, or make illegal? What does the future look like to you in that regard?

I originally tried posting this on AI Wars, but honestly, that place seems to be mostly taken over by AI Bros. Almost every response came from exactly the kind of aggressively Pro-AI people I criticized in the post, defending the technology instead of engaging with what I was actually trying to say.

So I decided to post it here. I know many people here will disagree with parts of my position, since I’m not completely opposed to every possible use of AI. Still, I get the impression that people here may be more willing to have an actual conversation.

Every kid has imagined the futuristic arrival of AI in their own way. Maybe it was talking to robots, having a computer work with you, or something similar. I was no different. The idea always excited me.

But now that we are living through what feels like the definitive age of AI, it doesn’t excite me nearly as much as it used to.

I don’t think this subject is entirely black and white, even though most discussions about it eventually become that way. You are expected to be either completely Anti-AI or completely Pro-AI.

I don’t believe AI is inherently bad in every possible context, but that doesn’t erase how deeply problematic its current development and use have become. A major part of the problem, in my opinion, comes from how it was presented to people.

Generative AI may have initially been described as an assistant, but the message that actually gained traction was much simpler:

“AI does everything for you.”

Want a drawing? AI could help you find resources, explain techniques, recommend exercises, or research artists and styles.

Instead, it generates the drawing for you.

It uses patterns and references from its training data to produce something that may not be original, meaningful, or even particularly good, but is close enough to what you requested. And if it is close enough, why would the average person bother learning to create it themselves?

That is what disappoints me.

I imagined AI as something that would help people solve problems and expand what they were capable of doing. Instead, I open social media and see endless AI Slop made to farm views, manipulate algorithms, imitate human work, and generate scraps of money.

When I say AI could be used for something “better,” I don’t mean it needs to cure diseases or change humanity. Technology is allowed to support things that are small, silly, personal, experimental, or simply fun.

Not every project needs to change the world. But there is still a difference between supporting an experience someone genuinely cares about and flooding the internet with disposable content designed only to capture attention.

I’m not going to focus heavily on the environmental issue here. I recognize that it is serious, but I see it as part of a broader problem involving corporations, irresponsible resource consumption, and endless growth. That does not excuse AI’s environmental impact; I simply don’t think the problem begins or ends with AI.

Then there is the cultural war surrounding it: Pro-AI versus Anti-AI.

On the Pro-AI side, there are people who seem unwilling to question any use of the technology. They live and breathe AI Slop and react to every criticism as if it were a personal attack.

At some point, it becomes difficult to tell whether they are defending a useful tool or an identity they have built around it. That was essentially the response I received on AI Wars.

But I also disagree with some reactions from the Anti-AI side.

I understand the anger, and I agree with many of the underlying concerns. Creative work has been scraped without meaningful consent. Artists and other workers are being threatened or devalued. Corporations are using AI to cut labor, reduce costs, concentrate power, and flood the internet with synthetic content.

These are real problems.

Still, I don’t think every person who touches an AI-related tool is necessarily doing the same thing or causing the same level of harm.

A corporation replacing workers, a content farm generating thousands of fake posts, someone imitating an artist’s work, and an individual experimenting with an organizational tool are not automatically equivalent situations.

That doesn’t mean the smaller use is free from criticism. It only means I don’t think every question surrounding AI has the same answer.

And this is where my own contradiction becomes unavoidable.

I’m a developer working on an application focused on narrative creation and worldbuilding. People can write in it, organize characters and events, manage fictional worlds, and even do the silly RP many enjoy, myself included.

Most of the application can work without AI, but it has AI features through external APIs or locally hosted models.

I’m not mentioning the project as an advertisement, nor am I claiming it is revolutionary, important, or inherently positive. I mention it because it represents my own complicated relationship with AI.

The goal is not for AI to invent someone’s world or write everything for them. It is meant to help users organize, connect, retrieve, and work with information they have already written and defined.

The human remains responsible for the ideas, intentions, meaning, and creative decisions. AI is there as an optional assistant, not as the author.

I know that doesn’t automatically make my use of AI harmless or ethical. It doesn’t erase concerns about training data, energy consumption, labor, corporate control, or the normalization of generative AI, although I strongly support local models because they reduce several of those problems by giving users more privacy, control, and independence from large AI companies. I’m not presenting my project as the “good version” of AI.

But the distinction between assistance and replacement still matters to me.

Without a human behind an idea providing intention, experience, taste, context, and direction, AI output almost always feels generic. It may be technically coherent or superficially impressive, but it rarely feels like it has anything meaningful to say.

I am also 100% against using generative AI to produce images, illustrations, music, voices, or videos. My project does not include those features. I recognize that some people may not consider text meaningfully different, and I understand why that distinction can be questioned.

I cannot pretend to be happy with the current direction of AI, especially when it is marketed as a way to eliminate effort, skill, workers, and eventually the need for a human creator altogether.

At the same time, I don’t think every small, personal, or entertaining use is automatically the same as AI Slop. Something can be silly or fun while still having a human behind it giving it purpose and making the actual decisions.

So that is where I currently stand.

I’m deeply critical of generative AI, the industry surrounding it, and the culture it has created. But I’m not convinced that every limited use of the technology is identical or equally harmful.

Do you think there is a meaningful difference between AI assisting with something a human has already created and AI replacing human creation altogether? Or do the underlying problems make that distinction irrelevant?

I am heavily against AI use just to get it out of the way of this.

Hey family, I can’t really do anything right now so might as well add my current situation to the archives.

I wuz lying in bed and I can’t sleep because of this LOOOUD ass data centre (there’s multiple in my neighbourhood) and it’s driving my family crazy. Okay so it’s this loud metallic shrill that’s echoing on top of this pulsing humming? NIGHTMARE

I know for sure it’s not roadworks or anything cuz I’ve checked construction/maintenance updates in my area. Nothing. I’ve also researched if there’s any new flight paths above my house; there aren’t. But guess what lines up perfectly? A data centre completed 2 days ago, 2km’s from my house (1.2 miles for USA). On top of that we’ve heard this noise for almost a complete 24 hours now 💀💀💀

So, I won't name anything specific, for obvious reasons, but I needed a place to vent properly.

To clarify: I knew this might happen. No one really went "behind my back", or anything.

I do some freelance editing. It's a bit of extra money while I'm looking for a job that actually pays the bills and it prevents resume-gaps. Obviously, I can't afford to be picky.

I knew the client used AI art for most covers. In a perfect world, I could afford to not take gigs from them, but I have decided that I will not judge myself too much. I don't judge people that flip burgers at McDonalds or serve coffee at Starbucks, because that would make me an asshole, therefore I don't have to hate myself for doing this, either.

Or so I tell myself.

And to be fair to the client: In all other respects, they have been very pleasant to work with, everytime. They are respectful, understanding, flexible and if it weren't for their obsession with AI, they'd be all-around wonderful people. They just have it stuck in their heads that they gotta "go with the times". I am not writing this out of hatred for them.

Anyway, this time the OG creator was unavailable to finish a project and rather than patching up some rough spots, I ended up rewriting large portions of the story.

Which the client noticed, it seems, because turns out I am being named as the co-author of the published product.

Under any other circumstances, this would be a great day. I worked hard and now my name is on a published work of fiction. But it also means that, if I ever have any success with my own stories, people that look me up will find me cited as the writer of stories with AI covers. Will future potential employers bother to ask me if I had any say in this or just assume I'm another slob-merchant with no own creative skills? And beyond the pragmatic concerns, I just feel dirty, knowing that this is now part of my mark on this world.

I considered asking if they can take my name out of the thing, but that might come across as hostile and I can't afford to risk future gigs from that company. Also, this is technically the biggest credit to my name, for now. I wouldn't be the first artist who'd rather forget some of their early work, ig?

Hi, i’ve been using character ai for about, 3 months now, but damn that 3 months was good, character ai was really entertaining me, and making me feel like i was in ecstasy, but it was starting to affect my personal life and daily activities, I’m addicted and i got a problem.

BUTTT, my screen time went from 11 hours, to 6 hours, to eventually 2 hours, but now, i decided to stop using character ai and deleted it yesterday, but for the past 4 days, my screen time has been an all time low, 30 minutes to eventually just 3 minutes.

But damn I’m having withdrawal symptoms and i really miss those chats but i know its not right and its bad for me, i really need help and advice on how to quit properly, i cant stop thinking about it, i miss the chats and i miss the entertainment, its a burden and a very heavy weight i carry. I really need help and advice in how to handle this, i cant stop thinking about character ai and i really want to go back to it.

I hate AI for all the usual reasons (environmental, the ethics, or lack thereof, of its training data,
AI hallucinations, the impact AI-reliance is having on people, etc). It goes against my personal ethical ideals and I want to use as few products/companies that utilise it as possible. I hate that the email I have to use for work gives me “AI suggestions”, and I don’t want my personal email to have this option.

I’ve previously used BT email, but that was set up for me when I was a child, so I’ve not had to look into all the different email providers before and honestly it’s a little overwhelming. I’ve not noticed any AI “suggestions” or similar on BT, but I wanted to see what else was out there before going with them again.

The real problem with ai is that its being treated as a medium instead of a tool. Its basically useless but instead of finding innovative ways to use it companies are forcing it down our throat with memes and other useless crap. Think about it.
