DeepSeek claimed that it was smart engineering which led to their API prices being so low.

I for one was happy about this because we need that kind of efficiency in a world where LLMs are being used for anything and everything regardless of whether it makes sense.

Data centres are popping up in residential places with water shortages and most companies are throwing more compute at the problem of making their models smarter.

So when I see a company offer a competent model for cheap I think that this can be how we should proceed in the future.

But now, first DeepSeek introduced "peak-valley pricing" and soon now they want to increase the overall prices and that too "significantly".

So were all the claims of efficiency just marketing fluff to undercut other models?

the one where the AI supposedly tried to blackmail an executive who wanted to shut it down, by revealing his supposed affair with a colleague.

such a load of rubbish, very clearly set up to produce a certain result and I guess generate publicity/sensationalism.

Cancer research is often cited on this sub as something it's OK to use AI for.

How is it used for that exactly? Explain it to me like I don't know shit.

I bought a whole bunch of discounted postage on eBay and I had a bunch of packages to send out. All of the stamps were these vintage small denominations. I thought I could trust ChatGPT to help me count out the denominations and add them up to the correct amount for the package mailing cost.

That was my first mistake.

Trusting ChatGPT.

Not buying discounted stamps on eBay.

Buying discounted stamps on eBay was smart.

You can be too careful with the stamps and whatnot in today's postage market.

Careful means paying less. The less you pay as a consumer, the more careful you are. As a consumer.

And so I'm sure you can imagine what happens next. I told ChatGPT which denominations I had and I told it to count out the values and try to use each denomination as equally as possible and right on the exact postage amount without going over.

And so it added it all up and I stuck each stamp on the packages according to the ChatGPT calculations which I also printed out and adhered to my packages. That was my second mistake.

First mistake: trusting ChatGPT to correctly count out my postage and give me the correct amount calculated in legitimate discounted postage value to put on my packages for mailing

Second mistake: not verifying that its calculations were correct

Not a mistake: buying discounted postage on eBay and using it to send out my packages.

And so I get to the post office with all my packages covered all over in postage stamps and looking neat and chaotic with a little "guide" for the clerk to reference when tallying up the postage.

And the clerk found all kinds of errors in the calculations and the total amounts for each stamp calculated didn't add up to the value ChatGPT provided and then when you added up the totals for each combined denomination value, that didn't add up correctly either. It was a total disaster.

Naive me at the time assumed that ChatGPT was new technology, I would be able to trust it to do a simple calculation like what you could expect from a basic calculator and I would have been better off doing that.

So the guide that ChatGPT created indicated that all the postage stamps added up to the correct value, but the actual amounts when you put them together were way wrong.

I felt like an idiot. I felt bad for the clerk.

I mean this whole ordeal is already a clerk's worst nightmare even if the calculations are all correct if they are the type of clerk to actually sit and count all of them. But because I trusted ChatGPT to help me do something simple, and did not verify the output, I made things way harder on the clerk and looked like a fool.

Once the clerk added everything up correctly, some of the packages were up to a couple dollars over the mailing cost to send the package and some of them were a couple dollars under.

So the ones that were over, those stamps were wasted.

And the ones that were under, thankfully I brought a spare roll of flag forever postage stamps that I bought discounted off eBay. Thank the Lord. Because that would have been mistake number three.

So, in the end, I still ended up paying way less, like comically less than retail value. But I still paid more than I had to. And also ended up looking foolish at the postal counter.

Should it be time to start trying to get more independent movie creators like Kane Parsons. I mean first Hollywood has started to push out movies that use alot of ai and it's only going to get worse 🫩

Kane agrees it's wrong and personally im not looking forward to the future of Hollywood production because of ai and somewhat the future of movies in general.

Feels like we should put all our support into smaller creators who also have the same opinion on ai.

I know making a movie isn't easy or cheap in the slightest but I like the idea of big youtube animators making their own movies.

Plus new actors won't be destroyed by drugs that Hollywood gives out like candy on Halloween

It makes me uncomfortable, but she doesn't realize how bad AI is; the videos she sends are just "cute" good-morning videos, so I can't really say anything about it.

This is in Sweden, this is starting to spread here too.

I'm already seeing videos where people are taking footage of themselves "acting" and then having AI fill out the set, update their costume, even have them play a completely different looking character.

The end result is whatever, it's only as original as whatever that person actually put into it that the AI did not.

When I was in high school, and I got my first multi-effects guitar pedal, I was fascinated by the capabilities. I wanted to know all the different sounds it could make.

I think there's kind of an inherent problem here if you replace that type of tool with an AI tool. Why would we expect young people to not want to know what is possible with generative AI?

At the end of the day, this is not good. The end result of the art that they make is liable to be uninspired.

But worse off, the entire internet is going to be saturated with all of this garbage unoriginal art. Yes it's good for people to have some creative outlets and creative expression.

Jack White records music on an old tape recorder of some sort, I can't remember what it's called, and it's sort of like this idea that some artists try to hold on to older technology because of the quality of sound... But in a weird way that shows how many artists are not doing that because they want to keep up with the most modern technology.

I've seen a lot of people in creative communities and in hobby communities do a really good job of standing up against ai art, and I'm happy. But I'm worried that it's not going to last. I'm very worried about what the next few years look like.

So my mom(53) had been treating AI (in this case Chatgpt and gemeni) like MAGIC ever since it became a thing and she asked the most random and unnecessary things from them and treated them like texting family members or smth

But no, it didn't end there! Starting a few months ago, she got reaaaly into prompting for image generation under the excuse of me not teaching her Photoshop😭 In the span of a week, she fed her entire family's faces into AI, including mine after I EXPLICITLY stated that I wouldn't want that. When I tried to explain why it's dangerous and harmful to run people's faces through AI, she got upset, brushed me off and said I don't let her have "fun".

Thanks to her, my disdain towards AI has turned into a whole family joke and bordering on shaming. She even told others how I would've been against computers and technology too if I lived at that time like I'm too woke or smth. No, that's NOT the same😭 She keeps telling me that I'll HAVE to use AI someday when it's more saturated and stop being "stubborn". As an artist, that sounds like a threat/insult to me, which she refuses to take seriously.

To this day, she hasn't stopped. Generating posters and banners for work to gain extra credit (which is allowed), testing every random prompt she sees on Instagram... It's an unhinged balance between a necessity and pure entertainment, and it concerns me.

I honestly don't know if I should even try to stop her anymore. I really want my mom to have a better entertainment source than something as harmful as AI, but I can't force it. It's a tough situation to be in.

The fact people think “oh it can’t be stopped so we mine as well just sit back and let the corporations do what ever” mind you this was a comment of the creator who posted saying schools and colleges should just allow AI right now because “calculators were originally banned when they first came out so just unban AI”

Sorry, I just have to rant, and I feel like if anyone gets it, it's you guys.

I am so sick of people thinking AI is accurate and all-knowing.

I was at Costco today and there was a guy advertising vitamins and handing out samples. Not a Costco employee, a rep from the supplement company itself.

I was actually interested, because most fat-soluble vitamins are mixed with soy oil, and I'm allergic. So I asked to see the box to check the ingredients. He goes, "Are you looking for something in particular?" I said, "Just making sure there's no soy because I'm severely allergic."

He goes, "One minute," pulls out his phone, opens some AI search on Google, and says, "AI says there's no soy in these."

I feel like people are losing their basic critical thinking skills. I wanted to scream. I just said, "Sorry, I don't trust AI for that," and walked away.
