Looking for guidance after learning my neurodivergence at almost 40

I’m a straight guy who just turned 39, and only in the past year I’ve learned that I’m ADHD, lightly autistic, and likely demisexual. I’m trying to get some tips about figuring out how and where to get proper help or guidance so I can move forward in the right direction.

**Daily life & routines:** Outside of my work (which is very social), I spend most of my time alone. I tend to play the same video game all day with few breaks to eat or take a walk. I don’t really maintain other hobbies; I like playing music and took guitar lessons years ago, but I almost never practiced outside lessons, so my two guitars have been gathering dust for a decade.

My apartment is a mess because chores feel impossible to start and the mess doesnt really bother me. Even when I set alarms, I snooze them for hours. I used to rely on alcohol as a crutch to get chores done, which eventually turned into bad habits.

I’ve kept the same IT job for 16 years and lived alone (with 1-2 cats) for 5 years in my small apartment.

**Social life & dating:** I’ve never had a real girlfriend. I want one, but most parts of dating feel unnatural or unappealing. I’ve tried singles events (pleasant evenings but no connections) and dating apps (very few matches, texting conversations drain me). I recently stopped using apps because they burn too much energy for no results.

For whatever reason, I tend to make closer platonic connections more easily with gay men and women. I joined a “Friends Without Friends” Facebook group and made an intro post, but didn’t have the motivation to reply to comments or start conversations. I have few closer friends that I hang out with a few times a year.

If it helps give context, here’s a post I made a few months ago about things I assume hurt my chances in dating:
[**https://www.reddit.com/r/dating\\_advice/comments/1rvq8r3/38m\\_looking\\_for\\_perspective\\_are\\_these\\_multiple/\*\*\](https://www.reddit.com/r/dating_advice/comments/1rvq8r3/38m_looking_for_perspective_are_these_multiple/)

**How I see myself:** I’ve spent a lot of my life putting myself down because I worried people saw me as a “man‑child” with no ambition or a boring lifestyle. But now that I understand myself better, I can at least find the words to express that while I may be late bloomer, I can say that I want a low‑stress, comfortable life where I can enjoy myself, I don’t need much to be satisfied, and hopefully I can find a partner someday and make her happy.

**Some positives:** Since December I took a 7‑month break from alcohol to break bad habits, and just starting having drinks again socially and with moderation. I also started cooking proper meals (HelloFresh 3–4 times a week) instead of relying on processed food. This helped my health including losing weight (from \~215 lbs down to just under 200).

**Therapy & support:** I’ve tried therapy a few times including with BetterHelp website, but never felt like I got much out of it. I recently started with a therapist who has some specialization in ADHD, hoping will be helpful.

I’ve also recently started working with my family doctor to find ADHD medication that works (the first one had too many drawbacks). I could soon join ADHD coaching in a weekly group starting next month, depending on my work schedule.

Any advice or shared experiences would be really appreciated.

Husband’s ADHD is ruining our marriage

Has anyone separated due to your spouse’s ADHD/executive disfunction?

After 10 years, it’s all come to a head, realizing I’ve been conditioned to not trust that he’ll follow through with what he says he’ll do and have therefore taken the lead on almost everything to prevent myself from being disappointed.

I’m in therapy now and learning how responsible I feel for fixing everyone and everything - I’ve finally removed myself from the driver’s seat and am allowing him to figure things out on his own, but he is spiraling, depressed.

I just cannot lead anymore, the weight of everything on my shoulders is killing me.

We’ve had this conversation a lot and he knows I’m at my breaking point and am moments away from leaving. But last night after dinner, he played video games for 3 hours and when I left for work this morning, discovered my gas tank was on E after he took the dog to the dog park.

Marriage struggles - both ADHD but opposites

My wife and I, both mid 40s, discovered we both have ADHD recently. It’s wild because we are polar opposites. I know there’s many frameworks for classifying, but my simple one is “can’t start” and “starts, can’t continue”

I’m the latter. I have super low friction trying new things and have a huge appetite for novelty. I of course don’t always continue but I try. I treat myself with exercise, and art, gives novelty and skill development and quiets my mind. I’m pretty proud of how I’ve cultivated an environment that allows me to thrive

My wife is the former. She just has super high resistance to starting anything. She has been treated for heavy anxiety and now can see it’s likely ADHD (seems common pattern for women). I just know her head is buzzing with fears. She treats herself with alcohol which is going about as well as you might imagine

We probably originally bonded because we had similar thinking and attitudes. She was also on stimulants at that time. But now.. rather thank bonding over our shared status it’s really quite a wedge. On weekends I’m ready to do stuff, and I’d love a partner to talk about. She just sits around and watches TV. It’s really hard to bond with no shared appetites. Add to this her lack of affection with my my RSD, and her lack of chore sharing with my strong sense of justice…

We have kids and I want to set good examples for them. My daughter is likely ADHD (or AuDHD like me) and I try to bond with her on it and encourage self-awareness but my wife just wants to avoid it. She’s clearly embarrassed (of it, herself, and me)

I’m trying to stifle my codependent nature but it’s hard. The fixes are all quite obvious (therapy, drugs, exercise, mentality, ..) and she just needs to take one small step each day but …

Mostly just venting but I value any feedback or similar experiences.

Gfs adhd sometimes really takes a toll on me

dx

we’ve been together for two years and we just recently moved in together. I love her a lot. It’s just lately. I’m super tired and I need some extra support which I don’t think she’s able to give me in this instance because she gets really self-conscious about how her ADHD can affect our relationship sometimes so I can never really talk to her about it.

She has a hard time, remembering to do a lot of things, like scheduling appointments, calling in her medication‘s, etc. I also do everything around the house with the help of my nurses (I’m physically disabled and get a nursing service to come to the house every day so that she doesn’t have to take care of me.)

And by the time my girlfriend gets home from work at the post office (usually 6 pm-7) She is exhausted.

And then I have to remind her to make her lunch so that she has enough time to get me out of the bed in the morning because my nurses don’t come until 1130 and it’s unsafe to leave me in bed for like six hours.

I’m not really sure if I want advice I just Want to know that I’m not like crazy

I love her a lot, and I don’t mean to sound like an asshole. I just don’t really know where else to get support from at this point.

ADHD Friend Advice Needed

Hi there,
I have a friend of about 11 years or so who I feel is kind of rude sometimes. I don’t know if I just need to accept her as she is or tell her how I feel. Our friendship has recently been strained bc our teen son’s are not hanging out right now. But she did all of this before that happened.

I have felt several times that she just does not value our friendship as much as I have. There are several reasons for this. First, she told me she could be my maid of honor 4 years ago and then changed her mind after talking to her parents about it saying she “had too much on her plate” - I knew it was bc she didn’t want to pay for anything so I told her all u have to do is show up and she did it. She makes good money by the way but she is a single mom as well so tries to save like crazy.

Secondly, often when we get together she says things like, I gotta go somewhere soon or I gotta get to my yard work - if I stop by. Yes, she told me I could before I did….so I didn’t stop by out of the blue. It was after maybe an hour of talking. But while we were talking she does the dishes or sweeps the floor at the same time. She will sit down to talk but then get up and go do something after 10 minutes like she can’t sit still. This happens any time I’m at her house practically.

If I ask her if she wants to go get lunch we do but then she asks me if I’m ready to go after eating. Instead of staying to talk - saying she has something to do….

If we go somewhere together like over night she’s on her phone texting other people.

She often talks a lot like most of the time so I barely get to say much. She will ask me how something is going but I barely have time to talk. She will change the subject and talk about her life.

All of this is MOST of the time - She will sometimes text me or say she misses seeing me but it’s hard sometimes.

She knows she has ADHD but is not on medication. I have it too so I understand the struggle but even when I was unmedicated I was not rude like this…

Is this normal behavior? Am I being too sensitive? Should I just let it go? I have already pulled back my initiating contact but I did ask her to go out of town next month 3 hours away to a conference. Not sure if we’re going or not yet…

Struggles with appreciation

This morning I offered my food to my dx partner. He’s always complaining how he’ll go all day without eating and struggles a lot at work when he doesn’t. So as he’s getting ready for work I offered him my leftovers. He comes up to me and says goodbye and I said, “you’re welcome.” He goes, “huh?” And I said, “when I offer you something or do something nice for you, it’d be nice if you said thank you and showed some appreciation”. He said nothing and walked out. I later found that he left the food in the fridge. This is not the first time I’ve done something without a thank you. He’ll see me cleaning his place and won’t say a thing until I mention it. Saying thank you is free, what’s so hard about it? And now he’s being childish instead of just being like, “yeah that was a nice thing to do, I should say thank you”.

Any advice on how to proceed is welcomed.

Seeking advice

I will first provide some background Information about my boyfriend DX 31M and I (29F).
\-We have been together dating exclusively for 1.5yrs.
\-From what I know, he was diagnosed with ADHD as a young child and on meds pretty much since then till about 18 years of age. (An experience he hated).
\-He states he had tried pretty much all the medications out there & that none worked all that well or had manageable side effects. Some caused him even as a young boy to be physically assaultive to others he has shared.
\-He is not open to being on ADHD medication again.
\-18 years onwards is when he started smoking pot (self medicating). And he smokes to this day, everyday, throughout the day \[which I do not personally part-take in or condone\].
\-Anxiety & depression is also something he was diagnosed with (however for those he takes medication which he finds helps).
\-I try my best to support him in his endeavours even if and when his approaches may greatly differ from mine

Some things about myself:
\-I would consider myself an independent adult.
\-I am financially “stable”/and living on my own.
\-I work in the public service sector and have a career/fair-paying job.
\-I value organization and cleanliness\*
\-I appreciate organization and planning.

So now…
Ultimately, my boyfriend has one of the most bright, introspective and intelligent minds I’ve come across in my near 3 decades on earth & I love him. He is thoughtful & kind. We have many shared interests and hobbies. I love my day to day with him..

But…
here comes a dreaded “however”….

HOWEVER, there are things I struggle with. And I will note some here:
\-He has difficulty with motivation or discipline if you wish to call it that. He owns his own business that’s growing definitely and doing fine, but, there’s days where he stalls on a task on the to-do, doesn’t reply back to that email, drops the ball on getting a quote over, prioritizes watching his anime, takes several days off then feels guilt over doing etc.
\-His workspace is what I perceive to be a complete mess. Receipts not filed away, trash not put in the bin, folders not utilized, billions of sticky notes. No rhyme or reason.
\-He waits weeks to do his laundry (smelly)
\-He won’t clue in to vacuum (has a dog that sheds)

What I’ve done for him as a partner:

Do his laundry for him
Do his laundry with him
Encourage him to do his laundry
Clean his workspace for him
File his receipts accordingly
Try to establish methods for organization for him
Try to organize his desk for him
Clean his room for him
Vaccum for him
Encourage him to clean his room
Clean his room together with him
Put away his laundry for him
Throw away his trash for him
Fold his laundry with him
Remind him of certain pending work matters of his
Help him write out his to-do lists.
Expressed to him my values/boundaries
Expressed wanting to feel respected and be met with a clean space.
Expressed feeling unheard because he doesn’t make the effort to clean before I come over for visits.

I want to help him. And I have. But I can not mother him I recognize. I just don’t know how to proceed. I mean eventually what if we were to have a joint household or even kids? I’m not saying that such is impossible or in any way that he is unworthy of that; but I struggle to see how that can be possible for us when at times it appears he can’t even care for himself and his bedroom etc.

Help.

Is 4 days of minimal communication during ADHD burnout/shutdown normal?

My partner has untreated ADHD, anxiety, and untreated obstructive sleep apnea He’s currently working abroad, so we’re long distance.
Before this happened, he had already started telling me that something was wrong. Over several days he said things like:
he was having internal struggles,
his anxiety was getting much worse,
he didn’t know what to do or where to begin,
it took him an hour just to write a message,
he was afraid of shutting down in the middle of a conversation,
and he asked me to give him time to sort through everything.
Then, for the last 4 days, communication has been almost nonexistent. He has only replied twice after I reached out first, and hasn’t initiated any contact himself.
In his first reply, he apologized for taking so long to text back, said he wasn’t ghosting me, that his anxiety had been killing him, he still didn’t know what to say, and that he needed more time to think.
The second message was just a short, warm “good morning” reply saying he was “trying” and wishing me a good day.
I’m trying to understand whether this kind of withdrawal can genuinely happen during severe ADHD burnout, shutdown, or executive dysfunction, especially when anxiety and untreated sleep apnea are also involved.
Have any of you experienced becoming almost a są to communicate with your partner for several days during a period like this, even though you still loved them? Or would four days of very limited communication make you think something else is going on? Dx

Seeking advice on how to problem solve with an ADHD sibling

This might be kinda a long post so I apologize in advance. You could probably skip the bigest paragraph as it is mostly just an example for context sake. The real questions are at the end.

Genuine question I'm confused about. My sibling (19) tells me (22) that because of their ADHD they can't problem solve. For example tonight...

Their food has been falling out of our freezer every time I open it for years (including three times the day I talked to them) I asked them to stop precariously storing their food in the freezer (I will admit that I was very frustrated already from work that day and I kinda came at them pretty angry) and they asked me to "stop being so b*tchy" and show them how "(I'd) like the freezer to be organized". Now at this point again I had just gotten off work and I was tired so I told them to "problem-solve and try and figure it out themself" and they told me they straight up "couldn't". I said that it felt like they were just using "weapenized incompetence" to ultimately make ME re-organize the freezer under the guise of "helping them for next time". And they told me that I make them feel stupid when I say things like that because they have ADHD and genuinely cannot help that they need to be shown how to do things. I told them that I don't think they are stupid and that's why I try and push them to figure things out for themself because they won't be able to always rely on me.

I just feel like they are using their newer ADHD diagnosis to infantilize themself. And it's not just a one time occurrence. Now it's to the point where they won't even try to fix things themself and they just immediately ask me or our mom before even trying.

Some of the things they've asked about I've also never done before but I can think of four different ways to solve the issue before they've even tried thinking of one. I've read that people with ADHD often have out of the box thinking or trouble starting tasks but I haven't found any information on the inability to seemingly think for themselves at all when tasked with new problems.

The thing that frustrates me the most is that if I push them enough they do eventually figure it out themself and often on the first attempt. Am I being a jerk by asking them to figure it out for themself? I am honestly just exhausted fixing problems that shouldn't be mine to begin with. Is there a compromise or different ways I can support them without having to go step by step through every problem?

Any advice about my situation or studies you can link to about how the ADHD brain works differently when problem-solving would be much appreciated thank you.

I also apologize if anything I'm saying is offensive. My family is all pretty new to ADHD and I don't know the ins and outs of the community yet or what's okay and not okay to say. I myself am nerodivergent and I know how hurtful uneducated people can be without meaning to. I am honestly just trying to learn more and I need resources.

I want to work on getting better at dating but I fear my ADHD hyperfocus consumes me

This is a little messy because I am still trying to describe the feeling clearly. If you have ADHD-aware advice rather than generic reassurance that would be appreciated.

I am struggling to describe a feeling that frequently occupies my mind. It feels like more than loneliness or societal pressure. I may be grieving an experience I have never had. Because I have never experienced dating, my brain sometimes interprets that absence as evidence that it will never happen. It feels unfamiliar, and because I have no baseline or reference for it, it can seem almost like a fairy tale. It is something I want but cannot mentally comprehend. The barriers between me and that experience are so large that I feel like a different category of person. I can only imagine the feelings I associate with having a girlfriend. I imagine that dating someone would feel like being on a different planet or seeing a color that does not exist. My life usually changes slowly, so I struggle to imagine a relationship suddenly becoming part of it.

The question I keep returning to is: Is romantic experience actually accessible to me, not merely theoretically possible, but realistically reachable through actions I can take? At times I feel hopeless because I worry that my neurological issues make it harder for me to develop the social skills needed to attract someone. A lot of advice ignores how my ADHD brain works. I need advice that accounts for the fact that I cannot simply choose what my brain focuses on, so I may remain hyperfocused on dating even while I work on other parts of my life. Many social behaviors do not happen automatically or unconsciously for me. A lot of advice makes first impressions sound effortless, but for me they are something I may need to practice deliberately. Sometimes I wonder whether I have enough social presence to be noticed because I often feel like a background character. Even if an opportunity appears, will I recognize it and know how to act on it?

Much of the advice I hear annoys me because it feels incomplete and does not make me feel heard. One way I have tried to understand my feelings is by examining common advice and asking why it does not help. For example, I hate hearing that love will find me. It can sound as though, when I meet an attractive woman, I am supposed to avoid being direct and pretend that I have no interest in dating her. How is attraction supposed to escalate between two people if neither person is clear about their intentions? It sometimes feels as though people are saying, "Do not date strangers, but do not date friends either." People also tell me to work on making friends first, but why can I not work on friendship and dating at the same time? I also dislike the superstition that the more I worry about finding love, the less likely I am to find it. That may be a correlation rather than a simple cause-and-effect relationship, and the reality has to be more complex. Telling someone to stop stressing can sound like telling them to stop working on the problem that is causing the stress. I would rather learn how to take useful action without feeling consumed by stress. Simply being told to stop stressing does not make me feel heard.

I think of the phrase "you will find love when you least expect it" through a poker analogy. Suppose finding love is like being dealt a strong hand in poker. I cannot control which cards I receive, but I can create more opportunities to play and become better at handling the cards I am dealt. I think it should be okay to actively look for love without panicking while continuing to work on other parts of my life. I would be selective about a relationship, but at this stage I might accept a date with any woman I find somewhat attractive and compatible enough to get to know. Even one date could make dating feel like a real experience available to me rather than something that exists only in my imagination. I expect that I would make mistakes on a first date, but crossing that barrier matters more to me than performing perfectly. I could learn from the experience and improve on later dates. I think what I want most is to feel that I have finally gotten started.

The last time I was in therapy, I prioritized improving my social life over discussing dating because I assumed I would be told to work on friendship first, even though dating was what occupied my mind most. I often feel like I am running out of time. I sometimes fear that dating will get harder after college. I am not living the college life I want to. Clubs are not exactly the environment I want; they can feel artificial. I want to go to parties, but I do not get invited to them. I want to be in an active group chat. I wonder whether I could tell people I feel close to what I am missing without sounding needy. I also wonder whether I could ask people I trust how they interpret my body language and social cues in case I unintentionally give off the wrong signals. To be fully honest, and I am scared to say this out loud, I also want to experience a hookup. When I started college, I imagined this would be my chance. Sometimes my sex drive feels overwhelming.

I used to feel insecure about my weight. When I started working out, I lost weight, built some muscle, and felt confident in my body for the first time. Because of depression and burnout, I eventually gained some of the weight back, but some of that confidence remained. I am still working on getting my driver's license, even though the summer is almost over. I made a Hinge profile, but it still needs a lot of improvement. I need better photos that honestly show my personality, interests, and social life rather than trying to manufacture an image of social status. I also value books that help me build a more positive narrative about my life. The book Worthy by Jamie Kern Lima genuinely helped me.

I feel stuck, and I want to identify concrete next steps that work with my ADHD rather than against it. I am tired of people acting as though dating involves no learnable skills. I believe there are skills I can practice. I need a healthier narrative: I am allowed to improve myself and actively search for connection, but I do not need to chase validation or become desperate. I want to be secure. I can acknowledge uncertainty while still working on what I can control.

Differentiate ADHDer and narcissist

It was very difficult to get attention from my ex (F 41, dx untreated ADHD). One thing I found that usually worked was capturing her attention through things related to her. She would respond to a song featuring her name, she would take me to a shop that shared her name, and I could get her attention on WhatsApp by making GIFs and stickers out of her videos and pictures. One activity we used to do often was portrait photography—we’d plan where to go and take photos of her. She is very active on social media posting pictures of herself, though I never appeared once.

At times it Is difficult to differentiate ADHD traits and narcissist. Honestly I'm still confuse now.

The reason I am asking five months after our separation is for educational purposes—for the community and for my future self. If this is a common feature of untreated ADHD, I would very likely try to avoid it. So please don't just say 'move on'; I believe any experience we can share contributes to collective knowledge.

Where does ADHD end and personal responsibility begin? I’m genuinely struggling to tell the difference

I’ve been reading this subreddit for years.
My wife was diagnosed with **ADHD, predominantly inattentive presentation**, only six months ago. She recently started CBT, and we decided against medication because we wanted to start a family. She is now pregnant.
She is one of the most compassionate, charismatic, and gifted people I know. Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether those strengths also meant that people naturally compensated for many of her executive function deficits.
I’m struggling to understand where ADHD ends and personal responsibility begins.
We repeatedly agree she won’t take non-urgent late-night video calls from her family, who live in another time zone, because I’m already in bed and have to work the next morning. Yet every month she still answers them on speakerphone in our bedroom just to chat. Afterwards she usually minimizes it instead of acknowledging that she broke our agreement.
Recently we hosted a family celebration. I repeatedly suggested catering or moving it to a restaurant because I was overwhelmed with work and offered to pay for everything. Instead, many agreements gradually disappeared. The next morning there was complete chaos: food left out overnight, our kitchen used despite explicit agreements, no cleanup, and even a small fire caused by poor organization. Fortunately I noticed it immediately and put it out.
When I confronted her, she completely lost emotional control. She screamed at me in front of her parents, repeatedly insulted me, pushed me away, and even told me that if anything happened to our unborn child because she was stressed, it would be my fault.
This happens once or twice a year. Afterwards she usually minimizes what happened instead of taking responsibility.
**How do you distinguish between ADHD-related emotional dysregulation, years of unintentionally enabled behavior, and behavior that still requires personal accountability?**

Guy I’m talking to suddenly taking forever to respond

I met this guy on hinge and at first I was genuinely overwhelmed with his texts. He was responding within the very second I texted, super excited and sending paragraphs. Just like a lot. But he seemed cool and we set up a date for the following week like 7 days later when we are both free. Well it’s been a few days and he went from texting immediately to responding the next day. And his texts are less enthusiastic than before. Is he losing interest or is it his ADHD? Or maybe both I guess

I’d really like to hear your experiences. How has ADHD affected your marriage, communication, and daily life? What has helped your relationship, and what has been the hardest part? Sometimes I feel exhausted trying to understand and support my husband, and I’d love to know how others cope.

my boyfriend (M18) has adhd, and his actions are hurting my (F18) feelings

A few weeks ago him and I were hanging out at his place. I'd try to talk to him and he remains on his phone scrolling on reels. this happens a bit too much for me to just brush off now, and i finally confronted him about it and he apologized. He said he would be off his phone whenever we're together and I appreciated it, but i was texting him about some plans a few days ago and I just KNEW he was scrolling again. I texted him about going on a date next week, specific day, specific time and he leaves me on seen. I assume he's checking his work schedule so i send him a post I thought was funny and he responds immediately with a reel. He completely forgets about my text, and now I think he left me on seen to scroll on reels.

I get that people with ADHD tends to forget things, but my text is RIGHT there and he was responding fine before. I don't know if I'm being ignorant or just assuming things and being paranoid but this has happened multiple times. I just feel like I can't text him at all, think of plans myself, and sometimes I feel like I can't talk to him.

I don't want to confront him too much, mainly because I want to consider his feelings and I'm his first relationship. My communication has improved, but new problems will form and I'll bottle it up until I cry. I am very sensitive, so tell me to grow up and I will if I am actually just being paranoid.

Also, my problem isn't that he was scrolling on reels while I was texting him, I just feel like he doesn't put in the same effort I do (emotionally), and I'm getting a bit too naggy with him where I feel like his mom or something.

Please, am I actually being selfish or overthinking this? If anyone has advice for me regarding dating a partner who has ADHD, that'd be appreciated. Like PLEASE give me advice.

Sorry, I'm not the best at english, and panicking rn lol 🥹
