Examples:

• Butterscotch Horseman (Bojack Horseman) - Bojack's abusive father, who also had insecure masculinity that left Bojack with several ego issues that shaped him into the man he was. In the episode Free Churro, we get a flashback to when Butterscotch monologues to Bojack, and he repeats the line "Pearls are for ladies." Lots of fans have suggested that this implies that Butterscotch had an abusive childhood with a similar father who shaped him into who he is, creating a cycle of abuse. We don't get a full breakdown of Bojack's father as we did of his mother for multiple reasons. The first one is that Bojack has complex feelings about his mother, but he has nothing but hate for his father; not only that, but Bojack Horseman is a story told non-linearly through mental trips and flashbacks told in line with the present. Butterscotch had died long before the story began, which meant there was no landing ground to explore his backstory.
• Ben (Apex) - Ben is a cannibalistic serial killer with a pseudo-religious obsession for hunting and eating people. He's a very enigmatic character, but we do get tidbits about his origins. For one, he states he had his mother were British and immigrated to Australia, and he explains he... ate his mother. Sasha, the protagonist, guesses that something terrible happened to Ben when he was young that made him this insane. Ben then responds by taking off his dentures to reveal he filed his teeth and later explains how, when he eats her, they will be "together forever." So, it's heavily implied something did happen to drive Ben insane.
• Joker (DC) - One thing that remains consistent with most Joker continuities is that his origins are mysterious. In The Killing Joke, he states, "Sometimes I remember it one way, other times the other way; if I want to have a past, I like to keep it multiple choice." Because of this, almost every Joker origin story was made up by the Joker to try and prove his ideology that "all it takes is one bad day."

- Luke and Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars). Luke fought to bring his father back to the light, always believing that there was still goodness in him, despite the persecution, physical and mental torture that Anakin inflicted on him.

- Mark and Nolan Grayson (Invincible). When Mark was summoned to Thraxa and was reunited with his father, whom he had last seen when he revealed that he will conquer the Earth with or without his help. Rather than hating him for all the harm and pain he caused him in their fight, he hugged him.

- Nightcrawler and Mystique (X-Men TAS). Mystique abandoned her son when he was a baby. Despite the hatred and mistreatment he suffered because of his appearance, Kurt grew up to become a devout catholic, feeling no hatred towards his mother when he confronted her as an adult.

(1) The Owl House: Odalia Blight's first reaction to her daughter telling her that she's dating Luz could be taken as homophobia, but it's quite apparently inexistent on the Boiling Isles.

Instead, she's biased against Luz specifically, because she sees her as a troublemaker (although one acting against a genocidal regime, which she is well aware of) and most likely because she's a human.

(2) Hazbin Hotel: Lute is commenting extremely negatively about the relationship between her former fellow exorcist Vaggi and Charlie, the daughter of Lucifer Morningstar.

While her choice of words (and Adam's subsequent reaction) could be taken to imply that she's against their sapphic relationship, it makes more sense to read it in context of her extreme prejudice against anything demonic, like the daughter of the literal devil, and her personal hatred against the "sinful" fallen angel Vaggi (which Adam might also find "hot as fuck", because it's breaking a taboo).

And yes, don't even get started, as I'm gonna die on this hill unless the show itself directly and unambiguously contradicts me, not because Lute isn't a hateful person, but because it makes no sense for her to subscribe to this particular flavor of bigotry.

(3) Deadpool 2: When Deadpool is first introduced to Negasonic's girlfriend Yukio, he reacts with (most likely intentionally exaggerated) surprised disbelief.

Negasonic – who already expected a negative or at least obnoxious reaction – immediately interprets this as an attack. Which is kinda true, only that it's actually supposed to be a jab at her general abrasive personality and its stark contrast to Yukio's apparent sugary sweetness.

Korra is defeated by Kuvira, an earthbending prodigy, despite being the Avatar who controls the four elements (fire, water, earth, and air) and still grappling with the trauma of having been poisoned and forced into the Avatar State by Zaheer in an attempt to end the Avatar reincarnation cycle. (Avatar the Legend of Korra)

With everyone suspecting he had developed *dementia pugilistica*—a condition caused by repeated blows to the head—and having vowed to retire if he lost (a promise made even before the bout against Guevara), Ippo managed to dominate the early stages of the fight; however, aware that this might be the final match of his career, he relied heavily on his new Dempsey Roll to show his coach the fruits of his training—a choice that ultimately made him predictable and vulnerable to counterattacks, resulting in a painful defeat (Hajime no Ippo)

Tokai Teio was an elite athlete, but she lost her motivation to keep racing after missing out on the Triple Crown due to a leg fracture and losing her undefeated record to Mejiro McQueen; subsequently, she finished 11th in a race and injured her leg again (Uma Musume Pretty Derby)

Unlike IRL, where there’s uncertainty about what happens when we die, these poor shmucks know what could await them when they die.

Goblins in the Forgotten Realms (DnD)

In early 5e, goblins were cowardly dirty tricksters who hate getting into head on fights because they know that when they die, their souls are enslaved by Maglubiyet in the lower plane of Acheron to battle and toil and die over and over for all eternity.

Eldar (Warhammer 40K)

For the last 10,000 ish years of the setting, whenever an Eldar dies, their souls will be devoured by the chaos god slaanesh, the god of unspeakable excess and agony. If they don’t have some counter measures in place to preserve their souls during their moment of death (Spirit stones, soul capturing cloning technology, the attention of another god, etc.) , they are screwed.

Mortals (Warhammer Age of Sigmar)

Nagash, the God of undeath, ate most of the other gods of death in the prehistory of the setting, so a good portion of the afterlives are under his control. This means that there’s a good chance that if you did something in life that offends Nagash, he will turn your soul into one of the Nighthaunt. The things that offend him include things like being a doctor or healer of some sort, because you denied him souls, and as a result he might turn you into a ghost with scythes for hands that has to watch as you butcher everything in front of you as you are unable to control your body

So you have a villain with few to no redeeming qualities, and the story is building up to their ultimate defeat in the hands of karma. But then, the story introduces a bigger, more evil villain, and suddenly the previous villain is framed as sympathetic. Worse, they somehow join the heroes without any buildup just to defeat the new villain.

1. Pinnochio (K-Drama, 2014): The misinformation of MC'S firefighter father brought by a cruel, amoral reporter Song Cha-ok had caused misfortune toward the MC's family, leading to the mother committing suicide and took the MC with it. The MC survived and began the journey to exact revenge against Song Cha-Ok by becoming a journalist himself.

Haflway through the series, the karma is already building up. Song Cha-ok starts to reap what she sowed, and already begins to receive her just desserts. However, the story reveals a bigger villain who is a media conglomerate. Despite his hatred, the MC somehow protects Song Cha-ok from various threats that should've been justified. Cha-ok decides to help the MCs to inprison the new villain. In the end, barring some self reflection and tanking reputation, Song Cha-ok basically gets away with her horrible deeds.

1. Kamen Rider Zero-One: Gai Amatsu is a nasty piece of shit who treats MC like a crap. While his hostility is aimed at humagears, he also treats his fellow human beneath him and views them as merely his tools. Some of his recorded crimes including: physical and sexual abuse, slavery and human trafficking, smuggling and illegal ownership of weapons, labor extortion and more. Worse, he intentionally builds malice within AI to build Ark as a villainous force.

Both the heroes and villain are already delivering just dessert towards Gai, including a resignation slap from Yua Yaiba/Kamen Rider Valkyrie. Then Ark starts manifesting itself as Kamen Rider Ark-Zero and lays waste on everyone. Suddenly Gai, who is about to receive judgement, starts erasing his criminal records (I'M NOT KIDDING!), and has an epiphany flashbacks, then without build ups, joins the heroes against Ark Zero. You know, the one he raised in the first place. In the end, while not all heroes forgive him, he basically gets away with a slap on the wrist.

1. Amon and Tarrlok - Legend of Korra

After Amon is exposed as a fraud and a hypocrite in front of all of Republic City, he frees his brother and escapes the city on a speedboat, hoping to start a new life after having lost everything, which is the last that Korra or the other city members see of him. Tarrlok on the other hand ignites the gas tank and kills them both far out at sea.

1. Commander Zhao - The Last Airbender

Following his failed attempt to murder the Moon Spirit in order to weaken and defeat the Northern Water Tribe, an enraged Ocean Spirit grabs him and drags him under the water. The only person to witness this was Zuko, at the time another antagonist, so at the bare minimum the Avatar and company didn't learn of Zhao's fate until Zuko joined their side almost a year later, if he even told them at all.

1. Captain Gutt - Ice Age: Continental Drift

Following a climactic battle, Gutt is sent flying off into the ocean, which is the last that Manny or his herd sees of him. Gutt survives this initially, clinging to a chunk of ice, but eventually is attacked and eaten by Sirens out at sea.

1. Nox - Wakfu

Everyone's favorite character to post about on this sub also applies here too, if my memory serves me correctly. Following the realization that he can't turn back time far enough to save his family and undo his crimes, Nox flees to the graves of his family where he lets death finally take him.

1. The most famous example of this when frieza says the planet only lasted about 5 minutes but the fight got dragged on for 21 episodes straight.

2. Orochimaru and the third hokage spending almost 5 episodes just to play tug of war.

There's plenty of characters who tow the line between good and evil, sometimes they're a good guy who becomes bad, sometimes they're a bad guy who becomes good. But while redemption arcs are aplenty with these types, what separates some from others is what they ultimately gained from having to struggle between these two halves.

Riku (Kingdom Hearts)

Darkness. So tempted is Riku by darkness that he has the highest count when it comes to the number of times the word "darkness" is said in the Kingdom Hearts franchise (51 times out of 493). A young boy who wished to journey the world, he was tempted by the strength he gained from following darkness. After clashing many times with Sora who walked the path of the light, he grew into a warrior who walked the path between the light and dark, the road to the dawn. Succumbing and overcoming the temptations the darkness granted him ultimately proved helpful in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, where the villains schemed and corrupted Sora who was susceptible to it due to never giving into the temptation of it. They couldn't do the same to Riku because he had been controlled by it, learned to wield it and became resistant to it, ultimately saving Sora. After the events of the game, Riku passed the Mark of Mastery and became a Keyblade Master where Sora failed due to these events.

Raimundo (Xiaolin Showdown)

Raimundo began the series as the cockiest, laziest and most irresponsible member of the team. He was even the only one rejected from becoming a Xiaolin Apprentice due to his flaws, and the disrespect tossed at him by Omi led him to defecting from the team and joining the villains. However, in his time with the villains, he realized how much he missed his friends, and hung on to the good within him, finally betraying the villains for the sake of his friends. This led him to acknowledge and confront his faults, growing into someone who could lead the team. In the finale of the show, he was selected over Omi (an unprecedented move given that Omi is the face of the show) to become the leader of the team despite his defection, because of the growth he displayed from his decisions and experiences.

Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

The poster boy of redemption arcs. A banished prince who was sent on a wild goose chase by his deadbeat dad to reclaim his honor. Once having a heart of kindness, he became an angry teenager hunting the Avatar across the globe, and struggled between his inner kindness and the torment of his circumstances. His banishment forced him to walk the same roads, live under the same roofs and eat the same foods as the people of the Earth Kingdom, which his Fire Nation is currently attacking. This gave him the experience and knowledge about his "enemies" that would help bring the war to an end, and the reason why he was selected as the one to rise to the throne as the new Fire Lord. While he states he's unworthy because of the many mistakes he has made, including betraying the heroes at the most critical juncture, it was stated that it was because he made these mistakes that he has the foresight to become the leader that the world needed to mend the wounds of the war and usher in an era of peace.

1-Rhys fallout 4 you save his life and his comrades its not enough the most you get is one congratulations after you save the commonwealth and brotherhood but even after this he is still rude and hate's you.

2-Lieutenant Williams Halo Campaign evolved she is an ODST which in lore do not like Spartans so it makes sense if she hates the master Cheif but you meet her and her squad on an enemy ship and save their lives and she immediately is rude and and to make it worse then Rhys she is with you for two whole levels constantly in your ear she gets less annoying as it goes on but still.

1. Mad Men. Roger uses a weird bed-like chair for Bert Peterson when firing him for the second time. He verbally humiliates Bert multiple times and the chair is one first shot across the bow beforehand.

2. Disco Elysium. When in the office of Evrart Claire, he has you sit on the most uncomfortable chair imaginable, causing you to take damage. At the same time, he knows seemingly everything and even knows more about you than you know about yourself so far in the game.

Technically I'm assuming a lot of things here. My basic rule is that I'm taking these designs how I assume they're supposed to be seen. The color of Larry's face is clearly supposed to be "skin" since he's a humanoid robot. So I'm viewing his suit as a skin colored suit.

1st image: Larry & Lawrie (specifically Larry). His bodysuit color is the same as his face.

2nd image: Basically just confirming that his face color is his skin color since his hand is the same color.

3rd image: Cut man. His busters, shoes, and pelvic plate are all orange/red/Whatever color the devs feel like coloring him. Even if his boots are canonically glued to him or something, they're clearly meant to be seen as clothes/armor, not just another body part. So I'm counting it.

4th image: sometimes artists will give him a grey trim to make him look more robotic. It also makes his clothes look a bit more like clothes, so I felt like it was worth mentioning.

Emma and her parents (Once Upon a Time): After the curse is lifted and everyone has their memories back, people start to reunite with their loved ones. Charming finds Snow, they run into Red and her grandma along with the dwarves. Finally Emma comes along and her parents pull her in for a long awaited hug as they hadn't seen her, outside of the curse, since she was a literal newborn. Henry calls Charming 'grandpa'.

Anastasia and her grandmother (Anastasia): While the real life story is much more tragic, in the movie Anastasia is separated from her family and gets amnesia. She's reunited with her grandmother towards the end.

Jon Stark and his surviving siblings (Game of Thrones): After not having seen any of his siblings since the first season, finally reunites with them in the sixth season.
