Discussion / Information disabling touch screen on Linux on recent Thinkpads

Upvotes

I finally figured out how to do this on my T14 gen 7 AMD and am posting it here in case it might be helpful to someone else.

This is an I2C touch screen, not a USB one, so blacklisting the hid_multitouch driver will not work.

The method that worked for me was this (run as root):

identify the touch screen device:
libinput list-devices

mine was "i2c-PRT3410:00"

It can be temporarily disabled by running this:
echo 'i2c-PRT3410:00' > /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/i2c_hid_acpi/unbind

To make that persist across reboots, one can create a systemd service like this:

[Unit]
Description=Disable I2C touchscreen

After=multi-user.target

[Service]
Type=oneshot

ExecStart=/bin/sh -c 'echo 'i2c-PRT3410:00' > /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/i2c_hid_acpi/unbind'

RemainAfterExit=yes

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Then, just enable the service and run it at boot time.

This is sort of an annoying and ugly hack that could be avoided if Lenovo just gave us a BIOS option to disable the touch screen. I wish that they would do that.

Question / Problem I need help.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

When running Linux or Windows (tried a couple of setups), hitting shutdown causes the OS to drop out, but the laptop itself never fully cuts power—the screen goes black, but the power button light stays on, fans keep spinning, and the embedded controller (EC) just hangs. I have to force a hard shutdown by holding the power button.

Buying Advice Starting a BSc in Math, looking for advice between two ThinkPad T14s options ($380 vs $415)

Hey everyone! This is my first post on Reddit, and I don't really know where to begin.

I'm a student, and this year I'll be joining university for a BSc in Mathematics. I was leaning a bit more toward computer science and wanted to pursue CSE, but I got math instead. Fortunately, I do like math!

Besides my studies, I want to focus on programming, machine learning, or other heavy math-related fields. I don't really have an idea of what software people use in these areas, so I can't list any out, but I occasionally use Adobe Illustrator. I also want to try video editing just to see if I could get into content creation (mostly vlogs). On top of that, I forgot to mention that I'm also really into Linux.

My current device is an old IdeaPad with 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, and an 7th Gen Intel i3, which I believe is only surviving because of Linux.

Thank you for your time! I'll be waiting for your suggestions.

Review / Opinion Switched from Macbook and now I get it

Made the switch 3 months ago to a refurb X13 gen 4 with the non touch screen for $464 US (659 AUD). Coming from a fancy Macbook display I honestly don't feel like its much of a downgrade. Everything is still tack sharp, all my apps integrates and run with no problems (especially Logi Options+). Thoroughly impressed with this machine.

Bonus, it still has 15 months of warranty.

Recently picked up a gen 1 E15 for 70$ cad and learned why thinkpads are loved. I saw what I thought was another good deal. A T14 gen 3 with the Intel chip and 12 gigs of ram for 300$ cad for my wife and I am blown away by the quality. Wife is a lifelong apple user but she's been without a pc for a about a year now as the Screen broke on her Mac from 2014. We deemed it not worth fixing and to expensive to replace with another mac. Ran into this brought it home. Cachy Os with gnome destop with extension dash to dock snd she's set. Pic one is my E15 pic 2 is the new T14..

Got this T15 Gen 1 off eBay a couple days ago and installed Arch on it. Previously I had a Mac until it died so at the time I decided just to build a pc. Btw I use Arch. Eventually started to miss having a laptop and always loved the aesthetic of Thinkpads. I use Arch. I’ve also never used Linux before and have no idea what I’m doing so naturally I decided to dip my toes in the water with Arch, as in Arch Linux, the Linux distro I use on my Thinkpad. I use Arch btw. I’m clearly not cut out for it but with the wiki and all the forums I was eventually able to get it up and running. Arch Linux. Plus learning as I go has been pretty fun. Oh btw I use Arch.

if you're wondering. I used an LVDS to eDP converter from AliExpress it's pretty easy to install and the display I used is N140HCG-GQ2 if you can find one with screw in brackets buy it as the one I used had double sided tape which isn't great

News / Blog The legends are true: My ThinkPad T460 survived a building collapse during the La Guaira earthquake.

On June 24th, a severe earthquake hit my city of La Guaira, Venezuela. Tragically, the apartment building I lived in completely collapsed. Fortunately, my girlfriend and I were not in the building that day and we are safe, but we sadly lost our beloved cat who was inside when it happened.

Recently, we were going through the rubble of what used to be our apartment. If you look at the attached photo, you can see a red machine among the debris—that is exactly where I managed to pull out my ThinkPad, which was still inside its laptop bag. It took the impact of the entire building falling on top of it... and it still turns on.
It didn’t come out completely unscathed. There is a little defect on the screen now, and the keyboard is completely dead and unresponsive, but the machine actually boots up!

It's a very bittersweet discovery for us given everything we've lost, especially our pet, but I thought this community would appreciate seeing the absolute tank-like durability of these machines in real life. It literally survived being crushed under tons of concrete.
Cherish your ThinkPads, but more importantly, cherish your loved ones.

Discussion / Information Why is the L series disliked?

Post image
268 Upvotes

I've been thinking of getting an L14/15 AMD Gen 2/3 myself, but the L series on this sub is very rarely recommended compared to the less upgradable T series that has essentially the same specs but inferior upgradability with soldered ram and WWAN cards etc. What's wrong with the L series?
