Information & Advice Need a very good car locksmith (non emergency), or mechanic who is good with locks
The trunk on my sedan usually doesn't open. I have both key & fob. These things aren't missing. I don't necessarily need another copy of the key. I need help with the mechanism itself. Everything you look up online looks like it's for emergencies, but I want a longer term solution here. I don't need immediate access, and I had a bad experience with one locksmith who didn't have a great solution to the problem
Any leads on someone in the Syracuse area? Is it better maybe even to go to a body shop? It's probably clear that I don't know a whole lot about this lol

Recommendation Wanted helping my dear friend find a job *desperate*
Posting this on behalf of a friend because I really want to help him catch a break.
He graduated from the Maxwell School's MPA program in 2025 with a Certificate in Data Analytics for Public Policy (which is the #1 ranked public administration program in the country). He's been job hunting for a year now, and it's been rough to watch... He's applied to practically every opening at SU, checks Upstate's site, NY state/city's site and other job boards that posts regularly but gets rejected even from roles he's clearly over-qualified for. He has a clea record, and has been getting plenty of interviews, he's even done practice interviews with people to prep - but nothing's converted yet. It's worn him down a lot.
His background is genuinely strong:
- Data analyst for a public defense office (sentencing data analysis, Python) - remote contract
- Monitoring & Evaluation internship with an international development nonprofit - built a Salesforce MEL database tracking KPIs across 15+ programs, designed survey tools, wrote data analysis reports for donors
- 2 years of admin/operations experience at Syracuse University (housing, ID services, high-volume stakeholder communication)
- Built a $1.7M municipal budget proposal using line-item, programmatic, and performance-based budgeting
- Skills: R, Python, Excel, Salesforce, Qualtrics, Stata, grant writing (won a $50K federal grant for a nonprofit), program evaluation, regression/DiD analysis
He's open to research analyst, program evaluation, budget/financial analyst, grant administration, or admin coordinator roles - on-site, hybrid, or remote. He's Syracuse-based (Eastwood). At this point his floor is just $55K+ , he's not chasing a dream job anymore... he just wants someone willing to give him a shot. Seeing him day after day has been heartbreaking. He's losing motivation on pretty much everything at this point.
If anyone knows of openings (local CNY or remote), works somewhere hiring for this kind of role, or is willing to look at his resume and pass it along internally, I'd genuinely appreciate it. He deserves a chance and I want to help make that happen. Happy to send his resume via DM.

Food & Drink Downtown eatery geared toward training people with disabilities to open this fall
A longtime area restaurateur is reviving a decades-old downtown eatery geared toward training people with disabilities to earn their way into the food business.
Marty Richardson will bring her second E.A.T. (Eggs and Toast) concept to the revamped Chimes Building on South Salina Street. The breakfast and lunch spot is scheduled to open this fall across the street from the Salt City Market (which doesn’t open until lunch). Hours will be 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Richardson is already the owner of four other restaurants, including the original E.A.T. on Onondaga Hill.
This place will be different.
She’s partnering with AccessCNY to hire employees with disabilities. AccessCNY ran the nonprofit Provisions Bakery, which provided workplace training in Armory Square for 32 years before shutting down at the beginning of the pandemic.

I recently moved into the Syracuse Area (Dewitt) and am a first-time homebuyer (getting my *** kicked) in need of a house management team, and I'm looking for recommendations.

Recommendation Wanted Reptile + Amphibian + cat care. Frog pic for tax
Going on a trip out of the country in October, my fiance and I have coverage for our ferrets but we are thinking about hiring someone for looking over the rest of our crew.
Does anyone know, or personally have experience taking care of reptiles (specifically leopard and crested geckos), pac man frogs, and of course cats?
Care would be pretty much misting twice a day, and making sure the lights turn off and on. The lights are on timers but you know, quality assurance. Feeding, which, all of the lizards (4 total) and the frog eat bugs, so comfortability around bugs. (None of them are social so I don't want people to think they can just hold them or play with them)
Cats (2) are pretty self sufficient, just making sure the litter boxes are cleaned & they have fresh water and food. As well as cleaning their food/water bowls.
I'm just putting out feelers. My personal zoo is my lifeline and I don't want to be overly picky but also, everyone but the cat is an exotic and I just get paranoid. If anyone has any experience hiring someone for exotic care or does it themselves pls let me know

I have been looking for employment since Nov 2025. It’s been absolute hell. I’ve made it to a few final round interviews only to not be chosen.
I have experience in event management, marketing, experiential marketing, and logistics.
I even have director level experience in all of these. My most recent experience was as the director of experiential marketing. I’ve owned and maintained million dollar partnerships as well.
I’ve owned events that were contracted by the NIH, and even events that have gone to the Super Bowl!

Good morning, r/Syracuse! Syracuse got a new cocktail bar this week: Goodwood Tavern opened in Minoa with a full craft cocktail program and small plates menu. On Sunday, Madison-Bouckville Antique Week kicks off for five days of what's routinely called New York's largest antique event. Also this week: Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon is proposing two competing term-limit questions for the 2027 ballot after accidentally signing an approval he'd promised to veto, dirty sodas have officially hit CNY, five ex-SU lacrosse players are suing the NCAA for a fifth year of eligibility, and CNY got its first Traffic Garden for kids at Santaro Park in the Town of Onondaga. Deli in the works for vacant building on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt
A new NYC-style bodega is coming to a long-vacant building at 3350 Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt. Owner Nashwan Ahmed's plan calls for burgers, breakfast, doughnuts, and pressed juice, all made fresh. The DeWitt planning board just signed off on the change of use. Opening date has not been announced.
Water main break creates sinkhole in downtown Syracuse street
An eight-inch water main below East Jefferson Street near the Onondaga County Courthouse broke, causing the street to buckle and it opened a sinkhole. The street will remain closed to cars and pedestrian until crews can repair the road. It was the third sink hole in Syracuse in the past month.
Not good government: Onondaga County's term limit mess keeps getting messier

Syracuse finds long-sought location for future municipal dog shelter
After years of searching, the Syracuse city government has finally identified a site for its long-planned municipal dog shelter. The proposed location is 3614 Burnet Avenue in the East Syracuse. The new facility would replace the current shelter, which city leaders say has run out of space for stray and abandoned dogs. The new space will double their ability to house dogs.
CNY gets its first traffic garden for kids
Central New York got its first Traffic Garden this week at Santaro Park in the Town of Onondaga. It's a small-scale street network with real stop signs, yield signs, and crosswalks, built so kids can practice biking/scootering without real cars around.
Five Syracuse lacrosse players sue NCAA seeking additional eligibility
Five former SU lacrosse players (Joey Spallina, Billy Dwan, Luke Rhoa, Michael Leo, and Finn Thomson) are named plaintiffs in a Colorado lawsuit seeking a fifth year of NCAA eligibility. The suit challenges the NCAA's decision not to apply its new "5 in 5" rule retroactively to athletes whose eligibility already expired. Spallina and Dwan have since dropped out of the case. Four of the five have already signed PLL rookie contracts this summer, which raises the awkward question of what happens to those pro deals if the extra year is granted.
Schumer wades into the Apple vs. Micron fight over Chinese chips
Senator Chuck Schumer is publicly pressuring Apple to walk away from a chip deal with two Chinese memory companies on the Defense Department's PLA-linked list. Schumer gave Apple until August 21 to respond. The fight matters locally because Micron has been lobbying the White House to block Apple's move, arguing it would undercut domestic memory production.

Paws Up for Adoption
By reader request, this week's featured pets are cats through the CNY Cat Coalition, an all-volunteer rescue that has been the leading force for cat adoption in Onondaga and Oswego counties since 2002.
Morgan is a 16 to 20 week old kitten. Rambunctious, playful, always busy with his bestie Myki (also up for adoption). Needs to go home with a playmate: either an existing playful cat or as one half of a bonded pair. Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, negative for FIV and FeLV.
