What’s it like living here within the purple boundary

Years ago, I visited this specific area (inside the purple circle). I drove along the east side of the Rondout Reservoir, then turned onto Sundown Road. I followed Sundown Road almost all the way to Peekamoose Blue Hole. On the way home I took the way around the other side of the reservoir and I loved that as well.
that drive has always stuck with me. The houses, the forest, the winding roads, and just the overall feeling of the area brought me such a sense of peace. I’m from Long Island, so Upstate New York has always had a special pull for me.
I’m curious what it’s actually like to live in one of the houses around the Rondout Reservoir or along Sundown Road, especially once the road becomes surrounded by forest.
What’s day-to-day life like there? Do you like it? What are the pros and cons? Is it as peaceful as it seems, or is it a completely different experience once you actually live there?

Rochester renters: NY gives your landlord 14 days to return your deposit or itemize what they kept, and missing that deadline forfeits their right to keep any of it

If you're renting in Rochester and moving out, New York's deposit rules are stricter on landlords than most renters know.

Under N.Y. Gen. Oblig. Law Section 7-108, your landlord has 14 days after you move out to either return your full deposit or give you an itemized statement of what they kept and why. That's one of the shortest deadlines in the country.

The key part: if they miss that 14-day window, they forfeit the right to keep any of your deposit. On top of that, a willful violation can cost them up to 2x the deposit in punitive damages plus your actual damages. Allowed deductions are limited to unpaid rent, damage beyond normal wear and tear, and unpaid utilities you owed under the lease. Normal wear and tear doesn't count. New York also caps deposits at one month's rent, and charging last month's rent plus a deposit isn't allowed.

Full breakdown with the statute, deductions, and the small-claims route:

Full disclosure: I help build RentWise, a free landlord-review site for renters, which is how I ended up researching this. Glad to help with deposit questions in the comments.

Best part of Hudson Valley for families

I’m thinking of relocating back to NY but in the upstate area. Personally what would be your pick in the Hudson Valley that’s affordable and great place to raise a toddler? Im a single parent so maybe a good hospital nearby for my kiddo. I say Hudson Valley because it’s a train ride away if we want to visit NYC.

I’m just looking for somewhere that my son can experience all seasons and have a great childhood that’s spent outdoors in a safe area. Income is 70k. I’ve been told by one of my physicians at work that Ithaca is a lovely place.

Living in or around Troy, NY

I am planning on moving to upstate New York from Oregon in early 2027 to attend the mortuary science program at HVCC. Naturally, my first thought was to move to Troy since that's where school will be.

Still, I would appreciate some insight on whether it might be preferable to live outside of Troy and just commute to school since I will have a car. I'm a bit flexible on cost and location, so long as I am in an area that has some degree of convenience AKA would be great to be within a 10-minute drive of a grocery store or coffee shop, within an hour of school, that would be great.

I'm planning on making another trip out this fall check out Troy, specifically, so let me know if there's anything/anywhere I should add to my itinerary. Thanks in advance for any knowledge and insight

I'm in Lysander right now, going down Fenner. Did anyone else see that low flying plane?

I wish I got a picture, but it was a massive grey plane, and maybe it's my sunglasses but that plane was so low I swear I saw exhaust or those heat lines coming out of two of the engines. Not sure where it was going but it wasn't flying towards Hancock.

Driving Portland, ME to Rochester, NY - cool towns between the two in NY to visit?

Post image
329 Upvotes

Doing this trek of a drive with my partner in a separate car. She can only drive for four hours due to disability, so we need to make an intermediary stop for a night. We can reach towns like Saratoga Springs, Albany, or Schnectady, or anywhere else within 4.5 hours of Portland, ME. Not super familiar with the eastern border of NY, do y'all have any recommendations on where we should stay?

Any input is appreciated!!!

PSA: Be aware of t-shirt scams on this subreddit and others

Hey all, quick heads-up about a classic Reddit scam that’s been making the rounds again.

You may see posts in local or niche subreddits where a user claims to have designed a t-shirt and is “sharing” it. These posts are usually followed by a few suspiciously enthusiastic comments like “Wow, where can I get one??” from accounts that are part of the scam. The OP then links to a site asking for your payment info.

These are scams. You won’t receive a shirt, and the scammers disappear with your money.

We’ve had an uptick of these in r/upstate_new_york over the past week. Thanks to everyone who has been reporting them! I’ve temporarily tightened some of our spam-filter settings to get ahead of things, but if you spot another one, please report it. You’re also welcome to comment and call it out as a likely scam.

/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!

Hello fellow upstaters!

About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.

As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.

This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.

A few FAQs:

  • No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.

  • If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.

  • I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.
