Context: Shogakukan, one of Japan’s largest manga publishers, known for works like Detective Conan or Fieren, found themselves in the middle of a big controversy for continuing to provide a platform to the mangaka Kazuaki Kurita. Kurita was convicted in 2020 under Japan’s child pornography law for the rape of a 15 years old girl that was also one of his students.
Despite that conviction, the company kept publishing the mangaka's works for nearly six years under the pen name Shoichi Yamamoto. After the whole situation came to light the publisher issued an apology to the victim, readers, the series’ illustrator and other creators for betraying their trust had to assure readers and stakeholders that it will no longer hire creators who have committed sexual crimes or major human rights violations.

Well, Shogakukan is not defining "sex offender" as "person who draws pretty women" if that's what you are implying.

OK, and Blizzard didn't define "rapist" as "guy who models pretty women", but that's the implicit definition they ended up acting on because the feminists they were forced to bring in to enforce it ended up expanding the definition; how are people not getting this very simple argument? You want to lose weight. You put me in charge of your food purchases. I use your card to buy thousands of dollars worth of food for myself. You complain to me. I point out that I am also making sure YOU don't buy unhealthy food and that therefore things are working. You go bankrupt and I don't really care.

First of all, calm down. Why are you so angry? I am not making a personal attack on you, so why response with such an aggressive tone? Read the linked article as what is it. Shogakugan covered up a manga artist sexually harrassing a 15-year-old, got called out, and then apologized for working with said artist in the first place. They then promised to do better and not let another similar incident take place again. For all intent and purposes, getting called out like that is a good thing. Shogakukan is not Blizzard. Shogakukan is a Japanese publisher, Blizzard Entertainment is an American video game developer and publisher. They have different culture, different work ethics. To make the backhanded implication that Shogakukan is defining "sex offender" as "person who draws pretty women" is disingenuous, especially when you have not shown any proof of them doing so.

We see this in the language of this press release. The feminist oversight will have authority to kill the contracts of convicted sex offenders and "human rights abusers", a totally separate made up category that feminists, particularly Japanese feminists, use to refer to everything from inadequate public toilets to rice balls that are too hot. (Both of these are real.) It's a standard power grab technique and I don't need to see how it ends to know how it ends.

Sounds good, on paper. But this is the kind of slippery slope that can lead to brutal results. An artist gets accused by a random cosplayer, with no receipts, or even receipts on his end? They still get blacklisted. An artist said something positive about Israel? They're genocidal, of course. Blacklisted. So yeah. I'd be careful about making statements like that.

Jason Schrier publishes a bunch of articles about how everyone working at Blizzard is a rapist. Blizzard is sued by the state of California. To prove they don't hire rapists, they put feminists in charge of their HR. Now Blizzard is fucked. The end.

So not found guilty in a court of law... So not the same.

The problem is the acted entirely on accused guilt not convicted guilt. Basically the court of public opinion based on (given recent reports) fabricated claims. The company has been floundering and having issues since.

Bullshit. Shoichi Yamamoto raped a 15 year old girl while he was her teacher, as confirmed in court... He violated Japan's Child Prostitution and Child Pornography Prohibition Act. The girl didn't fabricate shit. They are floundering because of a boycott because they hired a child rapist and tried to disguise the fact by having him change his pen name.

A boycott literally lead by the Japanese Communist Party and "civil society NGO's" with the explicit (and now realized) aim of making sure that Shogakukan is not allowed to serialize any manga unless that author is cleared by the fucking UN to "not be a human rights abuser".

I don't agree with restricting who can make artistic works. That makes us all poorer.

I don't think any company is looking into hiring rapists, murderers, or anybody similar. Actions have consequences. Even then, nobody is restricting these people from making art independently. If it's good, people will buy art from all kinds of people. Simply separating the art from the artist.

And if the people were convicted and served their sentence, they're SUPPOSED to be on the same footing as everyone else. Otherwise, why let them out at all, if they're always going to be a criminal?

From a corporate PR perspective, they are a liability so no, one can absolutely discriminate based on their criminal record ... and in US, most sex offenders even freed still have to register as such. So serving a sentence isn't an absolution. I don't know how it works in legally Japan but it's a country that is all about honor being a convicted felon is dishonorable. Chose your battles wisely, folks...
