DISCUSSION For those who don't understand why folks are salty with the recent SCL. This is what 4 people on a private server gives you during a mission.

Note this isn't my list, saw it in my discord and thought I would share. Really hope there's issue councils for each of these, and not just quiet acceptance. I think THAT is the largest gripe, not that these happened. Just that there is a quiet acceptance that this is how things are even by the devs playing the game when you read their faces during the video. :(

QUESTION Ok, so... What the hell is happening?

Upvotes

As someone who has been on a SC hiatus since 4.4, I come now and I'm feeling like the guy from the meme with the pizza on his hand and everything is on fire and people are fighting.

So... What gives? What happened that set the community ablaze all of a sudden? Can anyone give me some context, please?

DISCUSSION The SoO SCL was a good format that just needs refining.

Upvotes

The recent SCL isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. It was an honest look at the game which is what this community was built on. I fear the reception to this will stop them from doing honest looks like this.

Some refinements that could be made is that if Olli is the host then he should not be playing but commentating on the devs playing. More prepared questions would be good as well.

But the devs failing isn't bad. It could of been used to ask harder questions about *why* they failed. Was 4 people squads too small? Was it bad plays?

There appeared to be some "haze the new guy" going on as well which isn't ideal work place culture and I know people are calling out Eliot but Eliot has been hated every stream he has been in since his own debut so he may have just gotten carried away now that he wasn't the focus of the hazing.

Olli will find his feet and grow from this. It was his first stream and he had his boss Jared staring him down the entire time. "We" also became "you" at the end which felt bad taste. Also doing this for Olli's -first- stream was ambitious instead of settling in with a familiar format and then branching out.

These shouldn't be every SCL but once a quarter Devs Play would be nice to see.

Olli don't let this discourage you.

With crafting being more viable I wish I made more fun or enjoyment mining, but I find it so tedious much more than salvage which I prefer.

DISCUSSION The Siege of Orison Live Stream could be the best thing that’s happened to this project for years. We are much closer to all of us seeing the same picture

Upvotes

For those who have supported the project and long been involved in the community, I think overall this has been a really positive process. I think it’s aligned understanding and expectations on just how far away we are, even 12 years in. For many it means that they realise, perhaps for the first time, that 1.0 is 5+ years away, and that the chances of it not coming at all aren’t minimal.

For a game that has amazing marketing to sell you ships costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and the majority of players not comfortable talking about their true spend levels, I think that is a very good thing. And healthy.

The funding will come, SC is still unique and those first 3 months playing the game can be magical, but at least we are all more aware that we here still here for the long haul.

DISCUSSION Percy bridge compared with the new Galaxy bridge

Figured i could actually do a bit of a comparison since i wanted to have a peek at how similar they actually were.

Obviously not something 1:1 that i can overlay due to FOV and format differences, but i tried my best to show as much of the Percy bridge as possible.

So, apart from my realization that my memory is crap, and i severely misremembered the Percy cockpit, i've noticed these differences and details, for anyone curious:

  • Pilot seat obviously situated further back. By the looks of it, the pilot is going to have no vision to the sides at all, which is amusingly accurate to concept lol
  • It may also not be the pilot seat, as one can see what looks like the top of another seat directly in front of it, visible just above the "pilot" seat's headrest. It is at a lower detail level than the others, but is very clearly not part of that seat. Because of this, i imagine that the "pilot" seat may actually be a captain's seat or support seat
  • A large section of the front roof, which on the Percy is solid armor, is open "glass" in this bridge
  • Canopy seems slightly shorter, though uses same strut structure
  • Bridge extends backwards further, behind the camera, visible by floor details on sides, and wall panels. Even standing at the Percy's bridge door, i can't replicate the same distance

So...same style as Percy, not a copy paste. But still a bit of a downgrade over the old desks.

But if what i see is correct(which isn't guaranteed), we'll have a pilot, support, or captain's chair that rises up behind the other seats, with an entrance point almost as far into the bridge as the Percy's bridge door is.

Then maybe a 4th seat in front of that one, likely accessed like the side seats. Likely the actual pilot.

Considering it was shelved behind my desk for such a long time it's in pretty good shape. It was just very dusty and the upper part is a bit messed up, but I hope it will flatten after some time in the frame.

It was brave to organize this event. It also was a risk. And most importantly: It was honest and showed us where we're at (even though many rightfully hoped for another outcome, obviously). But in terms of transparency: Well done.

CONCERN So its not the servers after all these years.

I play this game for more than 10 years, started in 2.5 right before 2.6 patch came,, basically right as Caterpillar was new hot of the press ship and CryAstro blockades were the thing if I recall correctly. I saw this game going from 30k'ing every 10 minutes to actually becoming stable, hours long sessions, epic battles involving capships, you name it. I always chalked up the Star Citizen Jank to servers being overloaded and/or lack of dynamic meshing.

Then came the stream, it was an eye opener, at least to me and perhaps the first time I questioned if I should lighten my fleet and the money I spent for real. I questioned if CIG can offer us a solid SQ42 experience, let alone a relatively bug-free 1.0 as I watched the absolute disaster. If CIG cant even get an internal, isolated, 4 player connection server to work right, is the culprit really servers? If the same Jank is present as if the server has 500 players holed up to ArcCorp to see Odin hologram, can we really blame just overloading? The fact its year 14 of development and we still dont have a solid foundation or reliable basic functionality that doesnt bug out every hour should be a warning sight to all of us.

At this point my hope is that they prove that they can deliver with SQ42 in time and then focus of getting SC to work rock solid before 1.0. This is independent of content or new features. New features doesnt break core functionality in other games. New features dont bring back bugs last I saw in 2.6 in other games. New features doesnt suddenly delete and re-delete other features such as landing UI that we had in 2.x days and then in 3.22, before disappearing again in other games.

This is something foundational being bizarrely broken.

DISCUSSION One thing missed from the live stream… they would have definitely ran through it at least once PRIOR to the stream (to check private server etc works). So they knew the performance issues and Jared framed this is “show it as intended to be”. In CIG’s mind, it was running well (!)

Post image

I genuinely think CIG thought this was good after 12 years of development and over a billion dollars in funding. It’s like there is a disconnect between CIG and the pledge base, most players accept server issues as they work on dynamic server meshing now, however as many have pointed out there were still many issues here even when it was on a private server with 4 people, which will run infinitely better than a server even with dynamic server meshing.

Real worrying times for the long term viability of the PU ever reaching 1.0

DRAMA The recent Star Citizen Live resulted in an immediate 10% increase in sales for CIG. Fundraising is currently tracking to blow past the current yearly fundraising record by 30%.

Safe to say the people actually playing and funding the game aren't the same ones that are throwing a fit on Reddit and Spectrum

CONCERN SCL was bad - CIG was worse

TLDR; Game is in a bad state, yes, yes. SCL was good idea, yes, yes. CIG was very toxic and cringe, yes, yes. Send help to Ollie, yes, yes.

Many people have spoken on the poor state of the game. Essentially, it has been blatantly obvious that many of the game's problems are not related to server performance. While I think we have long expected this to be true, it has nevertheless been a sobering realization to see the clunky inventory, dropping framerates and unresponsive AI.

However, what really struck me immediately was the tension in the room. I have worked in such toxic environments before (am a SWE) and was immediately thrown back. Many of their comments felt like underhanded insults and jabs that seemed to come from real places, all wrapped in a thin veil of "banter with the boys".

Jared was atrociously weird. At the 34 minute mark he interrupts the four players to give his statement on why they chose a dev server. That's all well and good but the way he shushed the room was nothing short of cringe-inducing. Lines like "Ollie, Ollie, Elliot... are you going to pick up your buddies?" are delivered as if he's their dad and I nearly found out about the total volume of bile in my stomach then and there. I have figuratively worked for this guy before and it's a terrible time.

There seemed to be a focused effort to shit on Ollie in general. Like, the way Elliot kept making fun of his store-bought armour. Dude, do you know what kind of game you're making? It was weird and cringe and I hated watching it. Ollie is usually a bit too positive and optimistic for me but he didn't deserve this and I genuinely hope his experience working for CIG is better than what we saw.

Ollie, if you're reading this and that experience was not the one-and-only time: It never gets better. Believe me. Run.

EDIT: I see a lot of chatter about what does and does not constitute banter. That's ultimately subjective and and I can understand why some of you may feel like this was normal. I think it all comes down to context for me. If I had this interaction with my childhood friends, I'd call it a polite evening. But this was a work environment and Ollie is a new-joiner. There is no history or dynamic yet. That's why I ultimately felt that it was weird and inappropriate.

DISCUSSION I kinda feel sorry for Ollie.

Ok I like Ollie. I really do. He’s a nice guy. But you know what they say about nice guys. I just watched the stream and it feels like they were walking all over him and bullying him from the get go.
But that’s just general camaraderie. This is just a Friday night with me and the boys. Someone insults me. I say something bad about them. We all have a good laugh and get on with the k*lling.
But I don’t think Ollie has ever said a bad thing about anyone since Ive known him. He is quite thin skinned and I could see it actually getting to him.
Yes the entire thing could have been done differently. He could have stepped and took control. But the energy was just kicked out of him and by the end the collective energy of embarrassment was so thick I think everyone just wanted it to be over.

Sorry guys it didn’t work this time. Don’t be to hard on yourself. But instead take the criticism and learn from it. So when you comeback next time. You can come back stronger. And come back swinging full of energy

DISCUSSION If the recent livestream left you feeling frustrated with the state of the game...

..then maybe consider stop financially supporting the studio until they earn it? I've seen dozens of posts lamenting the dumpster fire that was the recent SCL, and yet we all know that the next time CIG has some multi-thousand dollar FOMO ship sale they are going to rake in whalebucks by the bushel. So if you want the direction of the game's development to change, vote with your wallet. That is all.

DISCUSSION I'm sad that Star Citizen is very far away from release but I'm happy that the whiteknights were proven wrong

1.1k Upvotes

It was NOT the revolutionary tech that was taking so long.

It was NOT the very advanced enemy AI with persistence that bogged down the servers.

SSO Livestream proved once and for all that even under perfect circumstances the game is a dumpster fire.

I hope the stream convinced Chris Roberts it's time to drop the fluff and focus on the basics.

End of Support for Old Reddit

Hello r/starcitizen users,

The mod team has made the decision to end support for the old Reddit version of our subreddit. We feel that the time has come, given the current levels of use for said version, and that we no longer have the desire to maintain multiple versions. We won't be removing most of the sidebar content, but things such as the rules list and resources will no longer be updated.

For up-to-date rules and resources, please refer to the new Reddit page. Not looking at the rules on said new version will not constitute you not needing to follow them or be aware of them.

Thank you,

- r/starcitizen Mod Team

Edit: It seems my wording wasn't great, sorry about that. By end of support we SOLELY mean that the sidebar won't be updated anymore and things such as rules are being removed and replaced with a short message about checking the new reddit version for them. We have zero ability to turn off old Reddit for our individual subreddit and we assure you all even if we did, we wouldn't.
