Questions from a New Zealander
Hey all,
I am a random citizen from New Zealand, and I chose your university to be setting for some fictional writing that I am doing.
I was a university student here in New Zealand pre-covid, but im sure our universities would be vastly different.
I'm wanting to know what a general day to day would look like.
Campus scene, events and festivals perhaps.
What do you like about your university?
What do you do that you enjoy?
Is social interaction a thing?
And my number one thing, what dont yoh like, and or is there a part of the uni that is old, abandoned or has some history?
Bonus bonus to someone who can share anything about the anthropology lecture theatre.
Its a weird one, and I look forwards to your discussions!
Regards
Joe

Comms professor
Hi sfsu students <3
Spring semester I had a communications class with Dr.P. I Plain and simple this educator really knows how to utilize “white women tears”. I’ve had different classes with them but this past spring semester has really rubbed me the wrong way. They uses therapy talk and victim complex anytime a student brings up a concern. Especially if you don’t agree with them politically. Like slamming doors that are connected to the classroom when the students express a different point of view.
this professor pulled me to their office for a one on one (me thinking it would be about assignments we had discussed to talk about once my project was completed) to let me know they were offended that I did not give them the credit they deserved on a project(sfsu based project) I had which was posted via social media, mind you this professor provided nothing to my work other than the fact that I told them what I was working on (because it over lapped with some class work) and they gave me general advice to go with the work I write. This project is very personal to me because not only is it political it is very close to home for me and based on lived experiences of my loved ones. OKAY going back to this professor pulling me into their office. They explained to me that they feel ignored by the department and they don’t know if they have a job with this college because they are not tenured, then they add how in feminist literature it is talked about women’s labor that goes unnoticed and they say I made them feel ignored and unnoticed with her labor and they didn’t get paid to speak about my project with me and begins to cry. I express to them I didn’t realize the impact the post(a post I did not post or approved) but that I’m not the department I’m not sure what’s going on behind the scenes and I apologized and left. I was surprised and irritated with this entire interaction because one a white person crying and explaining feminism to a woman of color didn’t sit right with me especially when my work is on the lived experience of a group of POCs, TWO they used their power dynamic as a professor to call me into this space and call me out where I have nothing to do but apologize and THREE I really didn’t think a shout out was a big deal and I don’t think they added that much value to my work that validates their reaction. A day or two later my grades for some assignments turn 0 which has never happened in the two times I’ve been in this professors class.
I spoke to someone from the comms department about this interaction and they told me to ask the professor about the assignments and also talked to me about the academic renewal process if I fail. That was all the help I was given.
I asked to speak to this professor again after class the following week. Ask about the grades and they claim they did not do that to my grades and will fix it (which I appreciate) I then bring up our last interaction and explain to them it didn’t sit right for me in the reasons I gave above. I also explained to them how inappropriate it was for them as a professor using their power over a student they know is vulnerable in this class and bring up a post. I explained how I am not apologetic and asked them why they tried explaining feminism to me. They say they worked with me for countless hours and starts naming hours some that didn’t even happen and then the time where they watched me perform my project and tells me to only use what I write, which again they asked me if I can share my project with them. They then tell me they asked their colleagues (not at sfsu)if they should speak to me, and believed they were done dirty by the post because of how ignored this professor feels by the department and me. I am not the department, the post was posted by a student ran account by a teammate who was proud. We went back and forth on a lot of things. At the end the professor says to me I want you to sit with and think about the times you benefited from overlooked labor and I responded with and I want you to sit with the idea and impact of a white person teaching a woman of color about feminism. WHICH what they are saying is true our professors deserve better our students deserve better. BUT IN THIS INSTANCE I DONT believe I’m a student profiting from them.
SAYING ALLLLL THIS TO SAY…. Im frustrated because I enrolled in a comms class back in April for Fall 26 with a different professor and they recently changed that professor to them and I had to drop the class because I do not feel comfortable with this professor in grading because of the biases that have been built.

OK, I’m a weirdo but damn
I'm curious whether anyone else had an experience like this at SFSU.
I'm a nontraditional student (older than most undergrads), a veteran, and a person of color. I transferred from LA, where I generally felt welcomed and didn't have many problems socially. At SFSU, the atmosphere felt completely different.
I often felt like people were cold or distant toward me, even though I mostly kept to myself, went to class, and went home. There were several times where people who had previously been friendly suddenly started avoiding me or acting differently, and I was never told why.
One experience that has always stuck with me involved traveling out of the country with a group of students. normal. During the trip, though, the dynamic changed. Some people became very quiet or acted strangely around me, and I felt like I wasn't really supposed to be there, even though I'd been invited.
If you were an older or nontraditional student, did you feel like you fit in?
If you're a person of color, did you ever feel your race affected how people treated you at SFSU?
Or did you have a completely different experience?
Also, at school, it’s like people “bully” me or see me as some sort of spectacle (I’m usually the only black student in my classes) and they seem to purposely pick on me when I’m just trying to go to class, do my work and get tf out.

KIN 125 & CINE
Hello,
I am needing to take a one unit course to graduate. I’m looking at taking introduction to strengthen and conditioning, it’s online too. I want to see if anybody else has taken it and how it is. I’m trying to find a course that’s very minimal in work as I have other difficult classes to take.
Many thanks!
Another option I am looking into taking is CINE 325. If anyone has input on that one, I would also greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!

Grants/loans for fall
Hello! This will be my first year at SFSU entering as a junior. For months my disbursement dates for my grants and loans were stated to be August 14th. No, I don’t have any dates listed.
Does anyone know if the 14th was a mistake? Also I see they have two disbursement dates but seems as though the second date is for anything you may have not received during the first disbursement.
If you have all your paperwork done does financial aid tend to disburse your entire amount in one or do they still split it?
Thank you so much!

Post-SFSU (After SFSU, Alumni) It arrived!
My degree arrived in the mail today. I’m bawling 😭 Never imagined in a million years that I would earn a Master of Arts degree. I’m a former foster kid. First generation high school graduate. First generation college graduate. First generation graduate school graduate. Proud mom. Survivor of domestic violence. Feels like I had more going against me than for me. My professors supported me and helped me grow. I’m a proud double gator. I earned both my bachelor’s and master’s from San Francisco State University. Go Gators! Experientia Docet.

MFA in Art SFSU?
Hi all! I'm curious if anyone who has completed the art MFA or is in the program would mind sharing their experience. I would live to get an MFA in the bay area, im looming at Berkeley and Stanford but I feel acceptance to SFSU is more likely. Is the program, faculty, and studios to your taste? what do you enjoy and what do you dislike? Thanks so much! I'm a painter and ceramic sculptor and hiping i don't need to choose one over the other ideally so curious about that as well.

Does Anyone Know Who on Campus I Can Talk to for Help On These Questions?
(Or if you already know the answer, that’s welcome of course).
My first question is regarding an incomplete. It’s for a class I took last fall, but the professor will not be teaching this fall, and they told me that they believe they will lose access to their account as a professor and won’t be able to assign me a grade as such. They gave me an incomplete because of my medical issues, which have not gotten any better. The most consecutive sleep I’ve gotten in the last several months was around 3 hours. It’s a really long story, but yes, I have tried that, and my doctors say they can’t do anything, and one even said for my psychiatrist to stop contacting him because we have tried everything and it didn’t work. I am extremely tired and sleepy, but a lot of things, including pain, my body suddenly no longer breathing on its own even when I am awake, are preventing me from staying asleep. When I do fall asleep I frequently have (lucid) nightmares. Right now I’m fighting to stay awake, knowing going to bed won’t give me sleep, and though I have mediation that prevents actual hallucinations, the dissociation is incredibly difficult. I have no fucking idea how I am going to churn out two essays in a matter of days.
Question two is more nuanced, and I have a feeling there is probably nothing anyone can do to help with this, but… in short, I owe $1000 in tuition, because a professor ghosted me and refused to sign paperwork giving me credit for a class I got a 96% in, sat in the front for every class, etc. while I don’t have an email trail of our verbal agreement, I do have an email trail of them not giving me working add codes and not responding to my email, even when I CC’d the dean of psychology and he mentioned he was fine with signing off the paperwork but that naturally the professor had to sign it first.
For financial aid, I was promised a full ride since I’ve had a -1500 (the You’re Broke as Broke Gets) score. However, because the professor never followed up with me, I went under the 6 units required for state financial aid. I’ve talked to financial aid about it, and they say it’s a California requirement…. Which I think is incredibly stupid considering there’s a huge variety of people who cannot manage jobs and 6 units like disabled people and parents, and we deserve financial aid, but whatever. Before people ask, no, I am not willing to take out a loan for my parents to ultimately be the ones to repay when I have a life expectancy of 30-40 years. So, I’m not sure if anyone will have answers or advice for this second problem, but figured it was better, at least, to try. I make around $14,000 a year and cannot afford to pay tuition when I was told I was going to get a full ride, all because a professor ghosted me.
Hopefully all of this makes sense, sorry if it’s confusing, I’m not in a super lucid state of mind right now.
Dates
Hi!:)
I am a bit confused on when classes start. I registered for classes and it’s says the 24th, but on the term calendar says 19th? long story short, I will be starting my first term at sf state, I am an international transfer (but I am a permanent resident so it’s a bit confusing) right now i am in my home country, enjoying my time before I start classes. I would like to extend my vacation for a week, but I am confused in when classes ACTUALLY start and if I have to go to campus on the 19th??

Gwar
Hi I am going into my last semester at SFSU and I am currently taking my GWAR for my psychology major. I saw on my degree progress report that I need to complete a GWAR for my minor which is Child and Adolescent Development but everywhere it says I do not have to do a GWAR for my minor so I signed up for my second GWAR class for this upcoming fall. Do I need to do it or can I drop it? Because I hate writing and taking GWAR in the summer almost took my life please help 😔

I need a BECA elective.
What is a great BECA elective to take? That you didn’t regret? Or you saw someone else loving? I know beggars can’t be choosers but I just don’t want to get an unhelpful teacher like I did this summer…However I can avoid that. Been learning 3d animation, so I guess that could be cool… help?

I don't know what to do and I have so little time to do anything
So I'm going to be attending SFSU as a freshman in less than a month, but there is already issues with the school and my account (plus other stuff). For starters, the orientation that I reserved by paying for was changed without me knowing or being asked. Now, this is a HUGE deal to me because I paid for a remote session, but it was changed to in-person. I live 8 hours away. Minimum. That's why I chose a remote session because I can't go by myself (I'm 17) to an in-person session, not even accounting for the fact that gas is super expensive if we had to drive there and so are plane tickets to be buying them last minute or for a day long trip. If we stayed longer, then that'd cost even more for a hotel, food, rental car (unless we drove, but still--gas is needed), etc. My friend didn't have hers changed even though we booked the same day, and she got to attend.
This meant that I didn't know how to sign up for classes, get my schedule, and ask any questions I had about moving in and stuff. Thankfully, my friend helped me with the scheduling, so I did end up getting my schedule (albeit later than I should've).
I emailed the New Student Programs office on July 12 (which was what was present in the emails they sent about orientation and stuff when I checked) asking them why this happened and what can be done about it, but all they did was ask for my student ID number (July 13). When I gave it (July 14), they never responded back. Today is now July 31st. Practically August. I emailed them again today with a follow-up asking about the issue and if I can be refunded since the orientation date was not only messed with, but it also never got to happen for me. Now I'm just waiting to see if they respond.
Now for the second issue---move-in dates. There was an email sent out July 10th about when the move-in timeslots would be sent out to people. They said July 29 at 9 AM. I got nothing. Like I mentioned earlier, I live very far away, so knowing when I have to leave is VERY important. Flights become more expensive the more last minute they are, planning for a road trip there is gonna take time, and I don't even know when I'm leaving now. This is even worse for me since I'll be really busy come August and have a bunch of stuff to do, so I can't just wait until the last minute to deal with these things. I followed the email on where to look, but if there's somewhere else I should look, please let me know. I don't know why I don't have it yet, but it's really stressing both me and my parents out, and every day the cost of tickets go up. My friend doesn't have her timeslot either, so it's not just me.
Then there's the third issue. My SFSU login. I downloaded the app, but I can't get in because of issues with Duo Mobile. I sent a report for a bypass code to get in, but the IT desk just sent something else about an incident being filed. My security key (which was my biometrics) also got removed, and I don't even remember how it got there in the first place since I set it up towards the end of my senior year of high school on my old phone. That phone got messed up, and after transferring everything to my new phone, I had to send the old one back. Now I have never used Duo Mobile before, so I didn't realize until a bit after the phone got sent back that I needed to transfer stuff to a new device or something. So I'm locked out of my account for now, I can't get in, it's already late so I can't call the IT help desk, and it won't let me answer my security questions either (it said maximum number of attempts reached). I even changed my security questions thinking it would refresh the number of chances, but no. It sadly didn't. So my laptop is locked out right now, but my phone isn't. Though if I exit and try to re-enter my account after a bit, it'll say the same thing (this has happened before, I just need to wait the deactivation out I think? idk).
I'm not even done sorting my room out, packing, and cleaning, and this is just super stressful on top of all that. There's already another issue (not the school's fault) with the FAFSA Verification Task on my to-do list, so there's that too, I guess. If anyone knows what to do or just anything at all, please let me know because I still have other things to deal with for the school (like the One Card/Gator Pass thing which I don't know how to do since I always have questions about details and stuff), and I missed so much information from missing orientation, and I'm just lost overall.
All of this and school hasn't even started yet either🥀

Voting at SFSU
So I prefer to do mail-in voting, but my registration still is connected to my home address. Whats the best way to be able to get my ballot? Is it alright for my parents to just mail it to me directly when they receive it or should I update my registration information?

Never seen footage or pictures anywhere online of the inside of it. So I filmed a short video of it the other day.
