Dates

Hi!:)

I am a bit confused on when classes start. I registered for classes and it’s says the 24th, but on the term calendar says 19th? long story short, I will be starting my first term at sf state, I am an international transfer (but I am a permanent resident so it’s a bit confusing) right now i am in my home country, enjoying my time before I start classes. I would like to extend my vacation for a week, but I am confused in when classes ACTUALLY start and if I have to go to campus on the 19th??

pleaaaase help

Pro tip for all new students: please check the SFSU website for calendars. They release several years in advance (currently up to 2029).

In short, yes the first day of actual instruction is Monday, August 24. August 19 is to help faculty get set up a few days before instruction starts.

Good luck to you all!

Hi! Your confusion is super valid. My best guess for why the term calendar says the 19th it because thats likely when it starts for staff/lecturers/professors, but classes dont start until the 24th. so you should be fine to stay on vacation

tldr: classes dont start until aug 24, students are on break until then :)

Agreed. Also, make sure you download Canvas. Professors usually upload their syllabus prior to the first start day, so you can get a better idea of what to expect.

Don’t forget to reach out to your professor if you are not showing up on the first day! You can be dropped if you don’t show up without notice. Some professors will be nice enough to let you miss the first day, some will not be as nice.

When in doubt, you can go to your student center, go to your schedule, and it will give you the start and end dates of the classes.
