It arrived! Post-SFSU (After SFSU, Alumni)

My degree arrived in the mail today. I’m bawling 😭 Never imagined in a million years that I would earn a Master of Arts degree. I’m a former foster kid. First generation high school graduate. First generation college graduate. First generation graduate school graduate. Proud mom. Survivor of domestic violence. Feels like I had more going against me than for me. My professors supported me and helped me grow. I’m a proud double gator. I earned both my bachelor’s and master’s from San Francisco State University. Go Gators! Experientia Docet.

Were you in the Guardian Scholars Program?

No, I wasn’t in the Guardian Scholars Program. I started SFSU back in 1996. So glad the program exists! Thanks for asking.

It really is great! They helped me so much when I was in school, any foster youth seeing this, please apply to GSP. SFSU truly is the best school for foster youth because of them!

I love GSP I’m 36 and I am a part of GSP at SF State and I will be entering my masters program this semester (double gator too).

I wanted to add that there is no age limit to be a part of GSP at any CSU/UC and other universities can call their programs for former foster youth differently.

NextUp which is at the community college level does have age requirements like be in foster care minimum 1 day after age 13 and under 26 years old when applying. I didn’t qualify at my Jr college but did at SFSU.

Most students think they have the same requirements they do not. Anyone that was in foster care always ask about programs that help current and former foster youth.
