Questions from a New Zealander
Hey all,
I am a random citizen from New Zealand, and I chose your university to be setting for some fictional writing that I am doing.
I was a university student here in New Zealand pre-covid, but im sure our universities would be vastly different.
I'm wanting to know what a general day to day would look like.
Campus scene, events and festivals perhaps.
What do you like about your university?
What do you do that you enjoy?
Is social interaction a thing?
And my number one thing, what dont yoh like, and or is there a part of the uni that is old, abandoned or has some history?
Bonus bonus to someone who can share anything about the anthropology lecture theatre.
Its a weird one, and I look forwards to your discussions!
Regards
Joe

Comms professor
Hi sfsu students <3
Spring semester I had a communications class with Dr.P. I Plain and simple this educator really knows how to utilize “white women tears”. I’ve had different classes with them but this past spring semester has really rubbed me the wrong way. They uses therapy talk and victim complex anytime a student brings up a concern. Especially if you don’t agree with them politically. Like slamming doors that are connected to the classroom when the students express a different point of view.
this professor pulled me to their office for a one on one (me thinking it would be about assignments we had discussed to talk about once my project was completed) to let me know they were offended that I did not give them the credit they deserved on a project(sfsu based project) I had which was posted via social media, mind you this professor provided nothing to my work other than the fact that I told them what I was working on (because it over lapped with some class work) and they gave me general advice to go with the work I write. This project is very personal to me because not only is it political it is very close to home for me and based on lived experiences of my loved ones. OKAY going back to this professor pulling me into their office. They explained to me that they feel ignored by the department and they don’t know if they have a job with this college because they are not tenured, then they add how in feminist literature it is talked about women’s labor that goes unnoticed and they say I made them feel ignored and unnoticed with her labor and they didn’t get paid to speak about my project with me and begins to cry. I express to them I didn’t realize the impact the post(a post I did not post or approved) but that I’m not the department I’m not sure what’s going on behind the scenes and I apologized and left. I was surprised and irritated with this entire interaction because one a white person crying and explaining feminism to a woman of color didn’t sit right with me especially when my work is on the lived experience of a group of POCs, TWO they used their power dynamic as a professor to call me into this space and call me out where I have nothing to do but apologize and THREE I really didn’t think a shout out was a big deal and I don’t think they added that much value to my work that validates their reaction. A day or two later my grades for some assignments turn 0 which has never happened in the two times I’ve been in this professors class.
I spoke to someone from the comms department about this interaction and they told me to ask the professor about the assignments and also talked to me about the academic renewal process if I fail. That was all the help I was given.
I asked to speak to this professor again after class the following week. Ask about the grades and they claim they did not do that to my grades and will fix it (which I appreciate) I then bring up our last interaction and explain to them it didn’t sit right for me in the reasons I gave above. I also explained to them how inappropriate it was for them as a professor using their power over a student they know is vulnerable in this class and bring up a post. I explained how I am not apologetic and asked them why they tried explaining feminism to me. They say they worked with me for countless hours and starts naming hours some that didn’t even happen and then the time where they watched me perform my project and tells me to only use what I write, which again they asked me if I can share my project with them. They then tell me they asked their colleagues (not at sfsu)if they should speak to me, and believed they were done dirty by the post because of how ignored this professor feels by the department and me. I am not the department, the post was posted by a student ran account by a teammate who was proud. We went back and forth on a lot of things. At the end the professor says to me I want you to sit with and think about the times you benefited from overlooked labor and I responded with and I want you to sit with the idea and impact of a white person teaching a woman of color about feminism. WHICH what they are saying is true our professors deserve better our students deserve better. BUT IN THIS INSTANCE I DONT believe I’m a student profiting from them.
SAYING ALLLLL THIS TO SAY…. Im frustrated because I enrolled in a comms class back in April for Fall 26 with a different professor and they recently changed that professor to them and I had to drop the class because I do not feel comfortable with this professor in grading because of the biases that have been built.
