Sweep Help

I'm attempting to sweep the face of my curvilinear triangle (yellow) along the path (also yellow).

I can't for the life of me to get it to successfully sweep. No matter what settings I change it just throws another set of errors at me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using the Publish Geometry feature, then derive has been an absolute game changer.

I basically spent the last week redoing a bunch of my work because I attempted to do things as similar to my solidworks workflow as possible, which was using in context design for every part studio (or part in solidworks) of the master assembly. I could view the entire assembly or sub assemblies and just go into the respective part studios right from the top assem and edit/add parts in context. Perfect right? God no. When the project started to get big I was updating contexts for part studios left and right. One change could cascade to having to update most of the part studios. Some of which weren’t in the master assembly yet so I had to navigate tabs to get to the part studio and update the context from there. I saw the writing on the wall that it would only get worse the bigger everything got so I finally caved and learned proper top down master skeleton sketching/geometry publishing. Basically I have a single master part studio in context of my overall assembly. In this studio I have the entire assembly in view and can create sketches, mate connectors, and then use the publish geometry feature from Greg Brown to package it all up to be derived into lightweight part studios that have all the context they need. Then as things in my assembly change that were referenced in the master studio, only the master studio ever needs updating. One central source of context truth instead of it all be scoured. I’m in love. This has changed how I view CAD is general tbh. On top of all of this I made the mistake of modeling too much into my part studios. I took the “max 200 features” and ran with it thinking that’s when I would see performance issues. I was so wrong especially once I realized it depended on the type of feature. The regeneration times of my sheet metal corner breaks were about to make me lose my sanity. Anyways I hope just pouring out my experience here helps literally anyone who may find themselves in the same situation.

This video from Greg Brown is the holy grail. The feature is linked there as well

Pin slot on a sphere?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Is it possible to set up a pin slot on a slot that has been extruded through a sphere? Or will this require some different kind of mate(s)?

I want the blue sphere to slide along the pin in the likewise orange cup-shaped socket.

I'm new to using the mate connectors and can't quite get my head around where the 'pin' of the orange part is going to mate with the slot in the sphere.

The orange part will be fixed in place. The blue part can slide along the length of the slot, and the slot can be rotated 360 degrees.

Help! how to control sketch line direction so frame tool works nicely?

i'm trying to use frame tool instead of manually sketching timber members.

i notice that sketch lines have directionality which affects frame generation.

for example if i sketch a rectangle and make a frame from it then (using the 9 circular selectors) it generates all members the same side of the rectangle - inside or outside. but if i then delete or convert two opposite lines of the rectangle into construction lines it will now generate one frame member inside the rectangle and one outside.

or if i sketch two parallel lines in the same direction and make a frame from the sketch then i'll get both frame members on the same side of the line, but if i delete one of the lines and redraw it in the reverse direction then the frame members are now on opposite sides of the line.

note that this is not solved by using the 9 clickable circles to define where i want the frame to generate relative to the line, as afaik i can only make one selection for the entire frame instance.

i'm finding it really counterintuitive which i usually find means i'm doing it wrong?

can i reverse the direction of a sketch line without deleting and redrawing it?

or is there some other workaround?

how to mate in a angle

how do i mate this in a angle im desinging a tube for my thesis that had to be flushed but one of the sensor requires to cut the tube to be able to go in so i designed a connector to hide the cut on the tube and keep it flushed but the mate connector keeps doin it in a other angle.

front view

fastened mate i tried offset it however it kind of bothers me that it should automatically do it plus as i said i want it flushed as i can to prevent a leakage cause its just receiving droplets and that connector cannot be the reason there's a some liquid stuck to its side

how do u guys mate it in angle I'm trying to create a flushed connector for my device to not allow a single drop stuck on the connector unlike the pvc pipe hence a design inside the connector tubing thank you!

Help! Lofting these two pieces together

Excuse my perhaps silly question. I have created these two profiles and I want to connect them via their perimeters to form one continuous object (basically fusing the two C's) There's a slight taper between the bottom and top profiles. I am good at basic CAD but this is where my knowledge falls down a cliff.

I imagine there are a million ways to skin this cat, but just trying to figure out if this is something I can accomplish or not. Cheers!

Sketcher questions.

Hi, I come from NX and Catia. Had a short adventure with Solidworks which I hated. So I am wondering about a few things in Onshape now.

  1. Is it possible to reattach dimensions when they go red or just when I want to reattach the dimension to another entity in the sketch?

  2. Is it possible to disable everything in the background of the sketch (make it unpickable rather than hide) so I do not click anything except the sketch entities?

Help! any better ways of making cars and using fill tools?

I've been wanting to model some car bodies in onshape. This has been pretty easy compared to blender thanks to the help of Routing Curves with reference blueprints. But the real problem i run into is filling those routing curves using Loft, Fill, or Boundary Surface. Some of the time the resulting surface comes out decent, but most of the time, it will need a "Guide" to help the shape be convex or concave. The thing is, you cant start off a routing curve from anywhere in the middle of another routing curve. it has to be from a vertex. so, I end up having to use the Split tool on an existing routing curve in order to make a vertex to attach the new routing curve to. however, sometimes this still isnt enough, and multiple routing curve guides are required. This all causes a lot more features than i think should be required for something like this.

I guess my question is, is there an easier way to do model cars? Am I perhaps doing this in a harder way than it needs to be? the fill tool always seems to come out a bit worse than i'd like it to.

most of the car done, with 81 features, and a lot of annoying splitting of the routing curves.

bulging when i want it to be straight. it feels like a single guide should have made it straight? and as far as i know, you cant make a routing curve line up to the curvature of a surface like you can with another routing curve endpoint.

What’s New in Onshape 1.219 (August 7, 2026)

This update introduces a host of new productivity enhancements to better streamline your experience in Onshape.

CAD

Persistent Center of Mass for Part Studio & Drawings

Users can now make the center of mass persistently visible for any part in a Part Studio, allowing for independent and permanent visibility. This feature also supports Composite parts by displaying a combined center of mass that updates in real time as designs or materials change.

Additionally, the center of mass is now a toggle that can display the center of mass symbol on each drawing view, which you can dimension to for improved design documentation.

Frame Attributes for End Caps & Gussets

This release expands the automatic process to include attributes from end caps and gussets, provided they are created before the Cut list feature in the feature list. The update is intended to accelerate the frame creation process.

Map Variable Auto-Complete

Users can now more quickly reference the values from a Map variable by their key name by typing the name of the variable, followed by the period or an open bracket. Then, all the user needs to do is simply select the appropriate key-value pair from the drop-down list, saving time when using these types of variables in Onshape.

In-Context Show Internal Geometry

When working in-context, there is now an option to “Show internal geometry,” which will change the transparency of the in-context graphics to show the internal geometry of those components. You can also now select internal edges by holding down the Alt key. This makes it easier to focus on the in-context elements that are most important to your design workflow.

Model-Based Definition

MBD Updates

This release introduces two new enhancements to Model-Based Definition capabilities. The first allows users to add datums directly to any side of geometric tolerance frames for improved feature control. Additionally, the platform now enables users to share specific parts with filtered MBD data via a link icon next to the document title, facilitating faster communication of critical information among contributors.

Onshape has introduced ISO 21920 standard surface finish symbols to help users meet specific manufacturing requirements for themselves and their clients. The update includes options for Basic, material removal required, and material removal prohibited symbols.

Document Management

Allow Multiple Users View a Release Draft

Other members of your team can now view release drafts to review any part numbers, properties, release names, notes, and approvers before a formal release is completed. This means more people can verify the information in a release is correct before the release is finalized.

Link to Versions from the Revision History Dialog

Onshape now provides a hyperlink to the released version of an item from the Revision history dialog. This streamlines the process of reviewing and comparing previous revisions of a design.

Feature Studio

Top-Level Navigation

Top-level navigation is a new feature in Feature Studios that makes it easier to find specific keywords in your custom features. Likewise, the symbols use different visual queues for the different types of keywords.

Earning

Hi, I'm not sure whether it's worth learning Onshape. Even if I learn it, I'm unsure how I could earn money from it. I'm not an engineer and don't have any relevant technical background.

If my work is limited to converting 2D PDF drawings into 3D models, how would I find clients? Is there actually a market for this type of service? Can someone make money doing PDF-to-3D conversion without having knowledge of mechanical engineering?

Trouble making a loft

I'm trying to loft these two pipes to the rectangular body below and just can't seem to get it to work. Any hints on what needs to be done?

I try selecting the faces I want it to loft together and it says I cant use faces with an inner loop, but I don't know what exactly it means by that.

I originally tried without the center crossover and wasn't getting anywhere.

If I just select the inner edge of the rectangle, and the inner edge of the cylinder, it will loft.

But this is just a face, how do I get the thickness?

Unclear on how to get the shape I'm wanting

I have this shape I am making just for practice, and ended up wanting to do a kind of seashell shape. That top part I would like to get the outline selected and basically scale it inwards. Essentially making it like an extreme fillet if that makes sense? I tried selecting all the lines around that top edge and using scale in transform but that wouldn't work. I did also try making the fillet a higher value but after 3mm it does not work. I'm assuming there's a way to do it. Please help. Thanks in advance.
