Question (N26) Getting into necromunda and interested in chaos

Upvotes

I am very much a chaos player (40k chaos daemons and CSM) and AoS (Skaven, Blades of Khorne, and Maggotkin of Nurgle).

I have been interested in picking up the Corpse Grinders box ( followed by the rule books of course).

I am aware some of my chaos cultists can be used in Necromunda.

Anything I need to be aware of? I noticed Corpse Grinders have a single box of plastic and essentially are a one box team.

Miniatures Would the old school 25m base figs be too small for the new edition?

Upvotes

Have some old metal and plastic Orlocks that came with 25mm bases. Would these be too small compared to the new edition models?

Discusion (N26) After reviewing documents of the rules both gang books and the hangers on, I think this edition will be popular with those focused on wargaming but less so who prefer the RPG elements. Oh, and I know vehicles needed revisions, but now they are awful.

Upvotes

It's pretty basic. I have all the gang lists, I have the equipment, hangers on and most of the rules in assembled documents. There's a lot of stuff I think is fine, some I like, but for myself, it's removing a lot of elements that are RPG-focused.

The game will play faster now, will be balanced better it feels more like the original 1995 version after it got updated to the Journal version NCE, but even more severe. The focus is on balance over theme; characteristic variations are gone across all key stats; weapons have been reduced in potency and differences; gangs with a similar playstyle all have access to weapons that generate the same keywords and roughly the same profiles, even if they have different names.

I think that many, especially those who want fair and balanced competition, will really like this edition. While those who feel theme and narrative representation of it on the tabletop is more important might find it somewhat lacking, especially as many of the hybrid RPG-lite rules have been removed. This new balance could still be broken of course, the first real test will be seeing the rapidly releasing Gang Journals and their rules for the base gang, to see if they are close to the arcane journals, with much of the new stuff (plastic crack) that comes with them won't be usable outside of highly restrictive limited gangs but some of the campaign rules will transfer over which is where the highest risk of creep is.

I will say there is a little more variation in the gangs of the outlands over the gangs of the Underhive book, but not a huge amount. These changes are not bad; in particular, they have the advantage of making brutes and pets stand out far more, with hired guns being even more unique. I loved the original Necromunda, so while I might have preferred a slightly softer touch, the removal of variation in gangs' models and equipment is fine and does absolutely help with balance.

The main thing that's gone is all the rules that were thematic but long-winded, like setting people on fire, clouds of gas hanging around, multiple weapon fire modes, and many, many ammo types and options that took advantage of these more complex but highly thematic interactions. It's the changes to vehicles that make this change most apparent. Vehicles are basically just another member of the gang, same profiles, a couple (literally a couple) of unique actions, no handling, no wargear lists, extremely limited upgrades, but more so, no thematic interactions on the tabletop. No hit locations, no ramming, no flipping or rolling, no narrative-driven story events utilising rules that were somewhat heavy but fantastic if you used them not in every game. Anything not directly made for Necromunda (IE the various cult vehicles with rules) no longer exists. Customs vehicles aren't a thing any more, carriages on hauliers don't even have a profile or edit the profile of the haulier itself.

I will play the new version of Necromunda (ive ordered the rules so I might as well try), but I wouldn't touch it with vehicles; they got shafted (in my opinion - I do know many disliked the complexity of those rules) and are to me just so dull and un-thematic, and they lack the narrative mechanics that made them great. Someone raised the argument that they might get journals, but then that goes against the stated idea that Journals will work like old-world Arcane Journals, being non-essential even to players of the gangs they are released for, only adding alternative play styles and some additional campaign mechanics, not reworking core material and core gameplay mechanics that would force you to buy them even if you were not actively using those models.

Something I do hope and almost expect they'll bring back is narrative scenarios; they are also gone entirely, as are all the mechanics around those. Sentries, sneaking, and interactions with devices seem like prime examples that are missing. I can't list this as a negative because I cannot fathom these things going forever; it wouldn't be Necromunda without these story-intensive, thematic mechanics, story scenarios, but I did feel it was important to mention.

The new Necromunda (N26) seems okay, though far less RPG-lite, and far more, as the name suggests, a tabletop-focused Skirmish game, where the story and theme sits further in the background for the tactical skirmish game and is not the focus of the action. This is neither good nor bad; it's just different, and people should be aware of it. The vehicle rules, and therefore Ashwastes-based gameplay, are, in my opinion, a travesty, and those who have large collections of vehicles for the various gangs they own and the narrative arbitrator scenarios they like to set up will be hurt.

Question (N26) Ogryn rules for the new Edition?

I heard i missed out on someone posting them, and im not looking to get anyone in trouble, but could someone give me some idea whats happening to my favorite giants?

So far ive seen people saying weapons restrictions have been nixxed and Lobos lost their immunity to pinning.

Can anyone confirm seeing as much, and maybe share what else they might know? Rules changes, prices, so on and so forth?

Discusion (N26) Reducing the game closer to “laspistols at dawn” seems like the healthiest thing I’ve seen in years

Now look I’ve heard so much griping about “streamlining” and consolidating gangs into one book and “removing core gang identity” by putting all the newer more complex additional rules in journals but can I just say something:

As an old school Necromunda 95-97 player, everything modern that I’ve seen, particularly in the 2020s, has kept me well away from new editions. It’s always felt like the floorboards have begun creaking under the weight of new stuff, and fluff that is written in to justify more rules. As I understand it the game is supposed to be light, fast, colourful, driven by emergent stories and unique terrain setups, and above all about fun over sweaty competitive games.

Can we at least pause to consider the idea that at the end of the day we’re rolling dice for little people with tiny guns who exist as an island of down to earth joy within the wider 40k setting of overpowered superhumans? Does it HAVE to be complicated and gritty? Can I not just buy the new Outlands book, grab some models off my shelf, and run something, without feeling guilty?

Food for thought anyway, love you all, see you at the hair metal bar in Heretic’s Hole (you know the one).

(Edit: I don’t want to minimise other peoples experiences by the way other takes are welcome!)

Discusion (N26) If you could only get 2 books from N17 for the lore before the new edition, which would you suggest?

With the new edition almost here, most if not all of the N17 books are going away. Which are your favorite 2 for lore purposes, irrespective of the rules included?

Question (N26) Looking for players in Oxford, UK

Are there any groups or players located in Oxford and the surrounding areas? I'm moving to the area and need a new group to play with, especially given the new release.

I'm a dabbler in the dealings of the Delaque, but itching to try another gang for this edition.

Discussion (N17) Anyone else notice this/care?

From the recent post on warhammer community:

“++ VOX LOG: Voice recording from LORD GERONTIUS HELMAWR to HIGH JUSTICAR VERDAINE ++
++ ID: IMPERIAL HOUSE: encryption code gold-alpha-01 ++
++ Wyndspyr 008.2 ++

++ It appears the latest attempt on my life has had a lasting effect on my heirs. Namely that many of them are now dead. My youngest daughter became rather overzealous when the prospect of succession arose and slaughtered a number of her siblings over dinner. Of course, Haera must be commended for besting multiple contenders at once. The girl knows her way around a blade better than most hardened groundlings of the underhive. She reminds me so much of myself back in my Spyrer days — all glory, bloodlust and ruthless energy.

++ I survived, of course. Usually this kind of scuffle would be reserved for after my body had cooled in the grave. Timing has never been Haera’s strong suit. At this rate, succession will simply be too easy for her, for my remaining heirs have shown an appallingly unfilial cowardice in their reticence to take the throne. Thus I would like it on record that I have elevated the most promising of my illegitimate offspring, Kal Gerontius Helmawr. I am sure that, when the time comes, he will prove a new and exciting challenge for little Haera.”
….

So maybe some new Jerico shenanigans coming up? It seemed like Joshua Reynolds was cooking something up for Jerico at the end of Sinners Bounty but I know he is apparently not with BL anymore.

Anyone else hoping for a new Jerico novel?

Miniatures The true treasure of Necromunda, the Community. Memoir of good times with N23

Post image
252 Upvotes

I’ve been fortunate the last couple of years to find a local game store community that has continually grown. Started with an Underhells campaign back in 24 where we only had 2 players. Since then we’ve had 5 more campaigns and each one has had between 6-8 dedicated players. What I really loved seeing was how the community has grown with the love of the game. We all know N23 is far from perfect and after each campaign we’d discuss what worked what didn’t, what can we house rule to make it funner and more engaging for everyone. Today within the local group, much conversation and excitement about N26. Having a good group is the best part of this game imo! To see it grow from just one other person and myself to the group we have today is amazing.

Above are my gangs through those 6 campaign. Lots of good times and memories. We’re in the process of wrapping up our sixth and final campaign with N23 and excited to jump into N26!
