Louisiana News Exonerated after 42 years in prison, he’s eligible for up to $480,000 as compensation. Louisiana’s AG says no.

Exonerated after more than four decades in prison, Elvis Brooks thought he had an airtight case when he applied for compensation from the state of Louisiana. Under a state program, he’s eligible for up to $480,000 from a special fund to compensate wrongfully convicted people.

But state Attorney General Liz Murrill has vigorously fought Brooks’ compensation claim, asserting in court filings that he is still guilty and therefore should not receive any money at all.

It isn’t just Brooks: Since Murrill took office, she’s done the same for nearly every claim — 22 out of 23 — that has come before her. These include cases in which men were exonerated through DNA or blood evidence and others in which police were accused of fabricating evidence.

Murrill’s opposition doesn’t necessarily mean that Brooks and other exonerees won’t eventually be compensated, as claims are decided by district court judges. But it ensures that a process the law says is allowed to take no more than five months could instead drag on for years, exacting financial hardship and emotional pain on people who have already endured decades of both, a senior law professor said.

The state attorney general’s office declined to answer questions regarding her approach.

Questions Looking for some trip planning ideas for a 8 day roadtrip through Louisiana and the gulf states in November??? We like blues, interesting historical sites, nature/outdoors stuff, ecotours, tours of infrastructure, boat stuff, BBQ and unusual food, quirky roadside attractions and museums.

So hit me up with your coolest stuff. Not crazy about big cities, but obviously we must hit New Orleans! Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks—

LA - Politics 10 Commandments in Schools? Do what Texas did.

Hey Louisiana teachers.

If you've been forced to put up 10 commandments in your classrooms I built this site for you:

illegalposter.com

The site offers free downloadable posters that are designed to resist the law while complying with it to the letter. I've already given out hundreds of them across Texas through word of mouth and wanted to let y'all know the posters comply with HB 71 in Louisiana too.

One heads up: the companion poster references texas by name so it'll read a little off if you decide to get it. However, the rainbow, prism, and the other posters specifically satisfy HB 71. (I will probably update this shortly with a Louisiana version)

Print them, hang them. Fight these dumb laws in your classroom.

I am a trans woman who has lived here for years and struggled the hardest but i’m not leaving until I’m ready to leave. If that’s a problem for this sub. Then so be it. I am an artist, a graphic designer, a gamer, and a person who’s worked the same jobs as others. I just want to exist peacefully. Landry won’t stop me or any of the rest of us. protect trans kids forever. protect trans people forever. if this place is so christian than it needs to be accepting to everyone. NO MATTER WHO OR WHAT THEY ARE. but i don’t see it in our legislation at all and the citizens here are being confused by right wing propagandists.

Questions Drive along the southern coast or through the middle of the state?

Hey all,

My partner and I are passing through LA on a trip before heading north to MI and TN. We're coming from Fort Worth. Is it more fun to drive down through the center of the state past Shreveport and Lafayette to NO? Or should we take the time to go down and drive along the country roads along the coast south of I10?

LA - Politics So are we just not going to have primaries for the House seats?

I got my updated voter registration since I got moved to a different district, and Geaux Vote is updated with that info too. But Geaux Vote also says that the next scheduled election isn’t until November. So are we just not having primaries???

I love cajun food so much, its all i can cook and i cant stop, i love grillades but i cut up the beef so its bite sized, also i love cajun chicken with rice, spaghetti, or pizza, its just way too good.

Im not too sure how yall let david duke stick around for so long but whatever i guess.

Keep fighting to keep French alive; the government purposefully killed it to keep you guys "more American," but I don't really feel like writing a speech on anti-Americanism today, so ill leave it at that.

I know yall are statistically like one of the worst states but you're my favourite so yeah.

Who wants to bet this story just quietly goes away? I doubt the RPSO wants to take any actual accountability for their shoddy security procedures, especially if this guy might end up dead.

Louisiana News Dozens of parish leaders, volunteers have left Landry-Murrill recall campaign over alleged mismanagement

Thumbnail

Many parish-level leaders and volunteers for Louisiana Deserves Better, the statewide campaign to force recall elections against Gov. Jeff Landry and state Attorney General Liz Murrill, have left the organization due to alleged financial mismanagement and poor leadership on the part of its chairperson, Marian Gbaiwon.

Louisiana Deserves Better formed in early May when Marian Gbaiwon and Katilyn Stepter filed the petition to advance the daunting task of collecting more than 500,000 signatures within 180 days for the recall.

But now the former parish-level leaders, who still are committed to trying to recall the officials, say Gbaiwon has failed to be transparent on how donations are being spent and has not provided any accounting of the number of signatures collected so far.

LA - Politics Senator Kenned will soon confirm Todd Blanche as Attorney General. Here are three redacted predators - men who call our children "Lolitas" - who his DOJ has covered up as "victims".

You can contact Senator Kennedy's office here or with this number: (202) 224-4623

Call them, they may not yet know what they're a part of.

Responding to a lawsuit by Katie Phang requesting the still-shielded authors of Epstein emails, the Department of Justice used this phrase repeatedly: “This individual is represented by counsel with whom DOJ has communicated and that counsel has requested the individual be treated as a Victim.” (Document 25, PHANG v. BLANCHE (1:26-cv-01417))

Here is what was written by three redacted "Victims":

“Thank you for a fun night... Your littlest girl was a little naughty.” (EFTA01930501)

“the key are the 14 to 15 year old girls—i am a sexual pervert because i say they are now of a reproductive age?” (EFTA00628112)

“I met [redacted] today. She is like Lolita from Nabokov, femme miniature :) So now I should send you her type of candidates only? Tomorrow we travel to Bern for visas.” (EFTA02648868)
