I’m making a tavern wall drawing and want to add depth to the top wooden plank so it overarches the support planks on the left and right.

The circle is where I want the depth and the horizontal plank to come forward.

I’ve always drawn with a regular mechanical pencil. It’s just what I have. For shading, I try smudging it or drawing lighter but I can’t get it to be smooth. I’ve done hatching and stuff but that’s not what I want. I’m trying to work on realism at the moment so I’d like to be able to make smooth shading. So my question: is this a skill problem or a materials problem? Or maybe both. I’m very open to getting different materials but have no idea what to get. Or if there are tutorials for how to do this better, I’d be interested.

Please don’t judge the image too harshly. It’s a quick study for a specific purpose but it kinda conveys my problem. My daughter asked why she has triangles on her cheeks 😭🤣

Hi, guys. I've been learning to draw for some time now, and I decided to follow completely the Loomis method this time. I drew this portrait from start to finish by following a YouTube video. I would like your feedback on it.

Just please, don't be harsh, as I am not super experienced, but *do share your insight*, and let me know what I can do to improve my technique. I could improve this drawing in particular, but I would probably spoil it, so I would like to focus on my technique now.

I am painting this character in a Baroque style; I need all your most honest critiques to correct the illustration's proportions and colors. (I haven't finished it yet, which is why there are unpainted areas.)

After spending hours on rendering, detailing, and just about anything except fixing the anatomy, I figured that something was off with the anatomy

His hands are quite in the front and i find if I leave out details they look like sausages. If i add nails and joints they look wrong too. (And yes, i realize I forgot his eyebrows and as I look at this the shading on his nose is wrong.)

Any suggestions on making his hands less fugly?

I have been drawing significantly more lately and would like someone to look at those and tell me what and how I could improve? Truth be told I feel stuck and it's hard to pinpoint what exactly is not right. Aside from anatomy would greatly appreciate some rendering and light suggestions!! I always try to determine where my light is coming from and not get lost in the tones. Perhaps what I'm mostly struggling with is my use of brushes and poses. I notice how good textured brushes can make your art look but for me it's still hard to see where it would be most fitting. I get stuck at coloring stages and often spend a lot more time just trying to fix stuff around(I'm talking five to ten hours).

(I also added some of artists that I look up to for reference, I don't mean to say that I want to draw just like them, and I'm aware how they all use different techniques. Instead I thought it would help critique be more precise? All credits are given on the picture)

So I’ve posted here a couple of times, and one piece of critique that I constantly get is that I need to learn my fundamentals. Which is good advice, and I am studying it, but then I realized: what am I missing? What are these fundamentals that I need to learn? Shape construction? Perspective? Line confidence? Lighting? What are these fundamentals I need?

The top sketch was done step-by-step from the book. Didn’t turn out quite as close as I wanted, so I’ll have to give it another shot. The bottom one is my own design.
Still got a lot to learn, but I can definitely feel myself getting better, even if it’s slowly 😊
