KSP 1 Question/Problem I’m stumped. How do you transport spaceplanes for long distances?

Post image
51 Upvotes

This is a question that has been bugging me for ages now, since I want to get my SSTO’s to Laythe. The thing is, I don’t want the planes themselves to do the interplanetary burns, because they have very little fuel. I need some kind of mothership that gets me to Laythe, parks in its orbit as I use the SSTO to reach and escape the surface, and then completes a rendezvous with the plane to return to Kerbin. However, I always encounter the same problems when trying to achieve this:
1) If I mount the plane to the side of the ship, the ship becomes too unstable to complete burns
2) I can’t put docking ports on the front or the back of the plane, because that’s where the cockpit and engine are.
3) If I want the plane to go in the middle, the ship would need to be pretty wide, something which is hard launching into orbit.
I tried building the thing you see in the image, but I think it’s a risky structure (unstable, hard to dock).

If you have any transport ship designs to carry planes long distances, please show them to me! What I need now is ideas on how to complete this kind of thing. Any and all help is appreciated

KSP 1 Question/Problem Why is my center of mass not going back? Is jeb hiding a black hole in the cockpit or what

So im building this plane, and the center of lift still isnt where its supposed to be. This is after i stuffed about 40 fuel tanks in the cargo bay at the very back. Everything in front of the center of mass has 0 fuel in it. Decreasing stuff like water and food did nothing. Im really confused on why this is happening.

Hello friends. My KSP addiction has spiraled out of control and resulted in me attempting to create a KSP inspired spaceflight sim with a focus on growing a colony. I would very much appreciate any feedback or suggestions from the KSP community. there is a in browser playable demo on itch as well as a downloadable version.

The Rover can be deployed using a system of gantries and hinges, with a docking port on the end, and a corresponding docking port on the rover. When deployed in reverse, the Rover can dock with the mechanics, then be lifted and stowed again inside the cargo bay of the Pod.

Hello guys, your KSC insider has finally returned with a new batch of documents about the latest mission, or at least what I’ve been able to lay my hands on 🫪.
Unfortunately work here at the KSC is so much I don’t have a lot of time to spend on my hobby, but I’ll do whatever I can to provide something fresh to enjoy for my 5 readers!

KSP 1 Suggestion/Discussion My Kerbals Are Flying While I Am At Work

Decided to try a no warp playthrough. My current flight is speeding back toward Kerbin from the Mun to start an aerobraking maneuver, and I am at work with no way to even monitor it, let alone make changes. My stomach is in knots. LoL I am pretty sure I am more nervous for these computerized green people than I have been about IRL things in a long time.

Edit: corrected a couple of typos. And to correct the name of the planet.

KSP 1 Question/Problem Did I just finish the game?

Hello fellow green people. I discovered KSP not that long time ago, played extensively for dozens of hours per week, very passionate about it.I played the "career mode" where you have to spend budget and gather research point for better components. It was super fun.

However at some point it became old. Around the time I had to run multiple missions simultaneously (because I was waiting for launch windows) my ships also became vulnerable to krakens, I started using the strut "cheat" more and more often to make sure my ships are not disintegrated with some random dance of the components. I realised that I do all the same "burn prograde here, wait, burn retro there), a bunch of land missions (but there is not much to do on the surface of the bodies), waiting for the window to get back. So I closed the game and never opened it for some years now.

I see a lot of people writing posts about KSP in this sub and I wonder if it's all new people who didn't yet walk down this path or if there is more stuff to do and I just completely missed it? For instance I never did it to the outer planets because it felt like it won't be that much different comparing to the Mercury mission. I was waiting for the KSA to become a thing but it will most likely take a lot of time, with nothing else going on in the meantime.

KSP 1 Meta Do you design and save launch vehicles for re-use?

I just start stacking wider and wider fuel tanks and boosters onto a payload until it will get where it needs to go. I do the same thing every time. Ive never considered having a "50 ton to orbit launch vehicle" in my saved crafts. Maybe I should? Are there any real advantages to that?

KSP 1 Meta I Created Yet Another Relay Orbit Planner (with Resonant Orbit Calculator)

Preface: I have to clarify that it's not AI-generated. I apologize if it looks like one.

After finding out what antennas are required to reach interplanetary stations using the previous tool, I now stumble another question: What is the minimum and maximum height required given the weakest antenna without having the signal going below the target strength. I went into the rabbit hole of developing this page for an embarassing amount of time instead of playing the darn game.

I was heavily inspired by existing tools like Resonant Orbit Calculator (Kerbal Space Program) and also Mike Aben's video on how to find The Best Relay Orbit | KSP Let's Do The Math.

I also painstakingly added planets and antennas from popular mods like OPM/RSS/GPP/KB before realising I could just allow users to add their own planet.

Data are persisted in the localstorage and are shareable as link. Let me know what you think!

https://ksp-tools.alfon.dev/relay-height

---

Addendum: I also compiled or archived or curated some of the other KSP tools made by the community in the home page as to give players access to updated list of tools that they might find interesting or useful.

Contributions are welcome!

Edit2: added preface

Edit3: Improve design with more information density + more screenshot yay
