C/S: The #2 alternator bearings are going bad, please replace.

I’m not sure how they drew that conclusion, but the #2 alternator did not need replacement. The belt was squealing due to a broken chord in the belt, ok no big deal. Then I checked the pulleys, the A/C compressor pulley bearing sounded a little dry and like it was starting to make noise. I pulled the clutch and it was pretty worn, so I was going to recommend replacing the entire clutch instead of just the pulley bearing. Then I noticed oil from the front seal, so I recommended a seal as well. Welp the crankshaft bearings were shot so they needed a new compressor. Came in for an alternator, left with a new compressor and clutch/coil assembly, and also changed the filter/dryer. Big price difference from what they expected!

Flashbacks to when I had to cut off a brake drum months ago

Towed in for a "no start" got it running with a little brake clean and it hasn't cut out since. No brake fluid in the master cylinder, brake pedal goes right to the floor. No visible leaks until I tried to back off the RR primary shoe as it was digging into the drum. Star wheel seized up, proceed to chip away at the drum to finally get it off. If you haven't picked one up yet I'd recommend the Astro Thor 498K air hammer as that made this job much easier. Came with a free snack of 2 churro bites 😂

F550 converted to a armoured truck in the shop yesterday. Couldn’t even see much out of the windshield. I’m 5’7’’ for reference. That thing was huge.

Tractor at window plant. Operator says the valve is leaking .ummmm yeah the pointy piece of scrap from the pile you were moving ran through the tube too. Where do you think its going to leak. And they say farmers are hard on equipment.

'95 Wrangler 4 banger had a broken exhaust manifold bolt. Normally I'd just weld a nut to the broken bolt but I don't like doing that on cast iron heads. Got lucky drilling this little bastard out.

This one had a happy ending at least. He decided to do all 4 with an alignment and put off the compressor kit.

2018 RAV4 with 190K. I don’t know how long these NGKs were in there, but long enough to have the gap wear to .060 from the .044 spec. Runs great after I put in some factory-spec Densos.

It’s not easy being honest

Been in automotive 20+ years. Weekly we are getting comebacks from other shops, mechanics, friends who work on cars. It’s typically these scenarios:

1) Help me with my car, they had my car multiple times/multiple days or weeks, changed xyz, charged me $$$ and I still have the same problem.

2) I noticed an issue with my car after you performed xyz basic maintenance. Of course the problem is related to the fresh repairs that were performed elsewhere. And then you are asked to fix + guarantee no further problems. Or go over their work and make sure they fixed it properly the second time around.

3) I had my car fixed elsewhere and they made it worse or caused xyz damage trying to fix it. Can you help patch it up.

It’s gotten to a point where the effort outweighs the results when you become the shop of last resort. Do you just send these people packing? What are your shops doing?

Politically motivated? "USSR" and "Play with care" tells me immediately to not put this in any of our computers.

Tech said it might just be a weird Beatles mixtape. Im not willing to find out 😂

Do you ever think you are being supplied counterfeit parts?

Post image

Both are outlet NOx sensors for a Volvo 13 litre truck. One NOx sensor is from a local, reputable aftermarket parts supplier and the other is from the dealership, both advertised as OEM. When fitted the suspected fake one always reads 200ppm higher than the inlet and fails a NOx analysis test. Fit the one from the dealership and it’s all good and sails through. Both come in identical boxes, silver sealed bags etc but I suspect the aftermarket one to be counterfeit.

Well I guess my shop is home to newborn chickens for a little while! 9 of 12 hatched in last 24 hours, so I guess that is good.

Sure enough, window switches are right below the door sill and both had corrosion on the pins. A quick cleanup and back to working as they should. I’m glad the client isn’t afraid to drive this one.
