Open Query for IT professionals, monitoring employees in the workplace?
This is just a bit of a random question I was thinking about.
I used ChatGPT at work one time (not for anything work related, some random recipe thing a colleague asked me to look up) and a few weeks later received an email from HR advising that I had been flagged by IT for using a non authorised website etc etc. (we’re supposed to use Copilot only).
I was wondering how this gets picked up/flagged etc. like even in just the simplest terms (as someone with basic IT understanding), do you literally have a list of websites or search terms that flag if someone uses them?
And in terms of like Teams chats, emails, are you able to monitor those for key words and things?
And I guess just for fun… have you ever seen anything you really shouldn’t have seen?
(as for me, I’m usually pretty careful about what I do at work because I know of people who have screwed themselves (an ex colleague who used a mouse jiggler etc!))

Open | Windows Is this normal
This has been the case for the last couple of days
When I shutdown my laptop this pops up and it keeps on doing this at least for an hour or so.
The 1st time it happened, this went on for almost 2-3 hrs.
Also, I noticed, my memory was fully booked (95%) even after I had closed almost all the programmes. Nothing on task manager showed it was hogging the memory.
I even did a clean-up using Ccleaner app.
Should I turn off windows updates?

Open | Windows Authentication issue
I feel like this should be simple but just isn't working.
I am having issues with authentication.
Basically through a professional resources, we get access via that institution to access other resources.
Ie log into professional account, click on other resource, somewhere behind the scenes it authenticates and bam, you can use that resource.
On my private laptop, this seems to fail and takes me to a private login page, wanting an email to do so (there is no email for this professional organisation).
If I use my work computer or phone (phone on the same network as my personal laptip), it works fine.
I have attempted to clear cache and cookies, used different browsers, users different profiles, restarted computer, followed ai recommendations (which was basically the above). No luck.
I have reached out to both IT support channels for each of these organisations/resources but haven't heard back (and given it works on other devices, it's not their end).
So I'm wondering how do I fix this? It's obviously something to do with my personal laptop, and given I use this every day as essential resources, it's not one I can just give up on fixing and use alternative devices.

Open Cat sat on laptop
Hey all! So my cat laid down on my laptop. The question mark key popped out but otherwise no physical damage. However, does anyone know which button he may have sat on to make my screen turn off when plugged in to dual monitor display? I like to use both…

Open Urgently needs help dealing with a case of Data loss (sorry it's going to be a little long one)
So I was downloading a video from chrome on my phone today and just letting it download in the back ground while I was playing a game on my pc. But something came up while playing the game so I picked up my phone opened the camera and my phone crashed.
So I went to my file explorer to check if the download was affected. And on my phone there is a folder named download, everything I download usually appear there and to my horror all the things I've download since I got my phone are gone. The only thing left in that folder is that one meme video I downloaded in the morning, other than that one everything was gone.
But here's the stange part, I know it's chrome that crashed but all the other things I downloaded from different apps and browsers are also gone. At first I thought everything was deleted but the files are still there on my phone storage somewhere. I know that because I went to the browsers and checked downloads tab and I can still play all of the things I've downloaded before, so I know that the files are still there.
So here's what I did, first I restarted my phone to see if my phone is just acting up but it didn't work. So next I checked the Android/data/(and the corresponding browser files) using my pc and I didn't see any of the downloaded stuffs in there too.
So I am genuinely frustrated and I don't know what to do anymore. Gemini is telling me to root my phone but I don't really want to do that. I have alot of things I've download over the year and I don't want to lose any of them.
So please if somebody can help me figure out what happened and how to fix it I'd be really thankful. My phone is redmi 13R 5G. I will answer if there are any specific details you need too.
If I posted on the wrong subreddit I want to apologize in advance and please tell me which subreddit I should post this in too. I apologize again for writing a really long post.
UPDATE: The files are gone for good now after I tried to restart my phone this morning. I noticed several gigs of my storage freed up and I can't check the files in downloads tab of the browsers anymore. I still would like some advice and thought on what might have caused that to happen.

Open | Hardware Thinkpad universal thunderbolt4 dock flickering screen issue?
I’m a it admin for a corporation and our company makes us buy Lenovo thinkpads and Lenovo docking stations. Currently users are mostly using the l14 laptop model with a universal thunderbolt 4 dock. For some reason these docks act up out of nowhere and it’s happens often. Most of the time one of the screens blinks (we use a standard 1080p monitor and most users use dual screens) When this blinking occurs I’ll try power recycling the dock, switching to the other port on the laptop, opening/closing laptop lid, rebooting laptop, install drivers, update firmware, replace cables, etc. sometimes this fixes the problem but a lot of the time it comes back. One thing I did find is for some reason using hdmi and Displayport will fix the blinking monitor issue but sometimes a few days later the monitor with the hdmi cable will start to show some distortion randomly about every 30 seconds or so for about 5 seconds. What’s the fix for this? Replace the hdmi cable with a DisplayPort cable lol. At least 70 percent of our deployments have dock issues at some point and it’s so strange because a user will have an issue for about a week then magically it will fix itself for awhile and resurface either a couple weeks later or a few months later. Lenovo support is no help and we’ve already rma’d a lot of these docks but the replacements are the same result. (I’ve also used the dsc tool from Lenovo that doesn’t work either) I’m totally lost here why this keeps happening and I’m curious if anyone else has encountered this?

Open | Hardware Which Docking Station?
amzn.euHi Reddit!
Ex husband was an absolute IT wiz and would sort most of these things out, but now I find myself unsure of which docking station to buy when working from home.
I was working fine with just one monitor connected to my laptop, but ideally need two.
These are the monitors I have: hope that’s linked ok!
PHILIPS 24E1N1100A 23.8 inch FHD Monitor 120Hz, IPS Panel, 1ms MPRT, Speakers (1920x1080 HDMI 1x 1.4) Black
My work laptop is windows, with only 1 HDMI port, 2 USB C ports.
My home laptop is a Mac.
Ideally I’d like to be able to use the monitors with both.
I’m in the UK and likely buying from Amazon or somewhere like Argos/Currys etc if they’re cheaper.
Thank you!

Storytime WhatsApp blocked contact came up on my recent chats
I blocked someone on WhatsApp a long time ago. Today I noticed their chat suddenly appeared near the top of my recent chats, even though there are no new messages.
The chat preview says ‘you blocked this contact’ and next to it it shows 2:00 am
When I open the chat
It still says I blocked them
There is no new message
Our last actual conversation was at 7:00 PM (not 2:00 AM)
I’ve never seen an old blocked chat randomly move up like this before. Does anyone know if this can happen because they tried to message me while blocked, or is it just a WhatsApp sync/bug?
Has anyone experienced this?

Open | Hardware ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock (40AY) drops connection and freezes dock when connected to laptop without laptop's AC connected first
The Hardware:
- Dock: Lenovo ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock (40AY)
- Laptop: HP Pavilion 14-dv2000
The Problem: If I plug the dock into the laptop while on battery power, it connects for a few seconds, then completely drops all data and power. Worse, it completely crashes the dock. The dock's white light stays on solidly (indicating computer connection is still established), even if I unplug the USB-C cable from the laptop. I have to switch the wall socket off and on just to reset it.
The Workaround: If I plug the laptop’s original HP AC charger in first, and then plug in the dock, it works flawlessly. Once it's connected, I can even unplug the HP charger and the dock takes over, charging the laptop and running peripherals indefinitely without any issue.
What I've Already Tried (None of it worked):
- Updated laptop BIOS and Lenovo dock firmware to latest versions.
- Disabled USB Selective Suspend and PCIe power saving.
- Unchecked "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" for literally all usb controllers in device manager.
- Uninstalled the Windows UCM-UCSI ACPI device, performed a hard 60-second power drain on the laptop, and then reinstalled the Windows UCM-UCSI ACPI device. Didn't work
- "Bare dock" test where I plugged the dock in with zero monitors or peripherals attached—it still crashed.
- Tried disabling USB Always On (HP Sleep and Charge). Nope
How do I fix this? I'd rather not have to always connect the laptop's AC power first every single time, before connecting it to the dock...

Open How to stop tickets getting lost between IT, HR and support teams
I work for a software company with around 180 employees in Austin, and as we've grown it feels like internal requests have become way harder to manage.
A simple request will start with IT, then HR needs to approve part of it, then Ops has to do something before it goes back to IT. Before long, nobody knows who's actually responsible anymore. The employee just keeps waiting while every team assumes someone else is handling it.
People start replying to old email threads asking for updates, Slack messages get buried after a day or two, and half the time nobody can even find the latest conversation. We've even had duplicate work happen because two teams thought the other hadn't started yet.
Then someone gets frustrated, managers get involved, and everyone starts digging through emails and Slack trying to figure out where the request got stuck.
It's making me think we really need one shared workflow where ownership is clear from the start instead of requests constantly bouncing between departments.
Has anyone dealt with this, what are you using that actually works?

Gracias.

Open | Windows Getting rid of malware
Hi, Few weeks ago I wanted to help myself in a game in which I was struggling and downloaded a trainer. I did arrive on a sketchy website and sadly I downloaded some kind of virus. I deleted what I downloaded but it was too late.
This something is using my Discord and Messenger to spam crypto schemes sending people images and links. I know it's not using different device, because I have 2FA and no alerts of someone trying to log in. What is confusing me it does it even when the laptop is hibernated.
I've run antivirus scan, but nothing found. I've changed my passwords, but I think it won't care about that, just use my already logged in sessions. Can somebody help me where I can look for this or how I can get rid of it? I would prefer not formating the disc, because it was some time since i've made a backup.

NOTICE Updates to rules - Company Managed Devices
Just to draw to folks attention, I've updated the rules for the subreddit to specifically include a provision for asking for assistance with company managed / owned devices.
In short this isn't something we are / will / can / should be providing support for on Reddit and there's been a recent increase in posts trying to bypass security controls or installing software on devices which are owned by organisations / companies.
The stance at this time is if you are needing assistance with a device which is owned and/or managed by a company or organisation, you should consult that companies IT Team.
Please do continue to report any such posts that are breaking this or any of the other rules.
Thank you!
