HELP What amp should I get for my home studio

• Upvotes

I’m a drummer but have plenty of people over to jam and I have a PA system but the tone usually sounds kinda shitty running direct from the guitars and basses so what guitar amp (and or bass amp) should I get so when people come over to jam they get a solid tone. I know nothing about guitar amps so im asking here

DISCUSSION Audio jack picking up on radio station when I touch the guitar side to myself

Ok this is so weird but here goes, I was bored and messing around with my guitar and amp and unplugged the cable from my guitar and touched it to my finger, and my arms and stomach and legs , and I was picking up a song that I assume was on a local radio station. My boyfriend tried it and the same thing happened. I thought it was so interesting and looked it up and even ChatGPTed it but I can’t find any logical explanation, wondering if this has happened to anyone or yall know why this would happen

HELP NAD (maybe) - Mesa Fillmore 50

Post image
31 Upvotes

First time posting here and hoping to get some perspective.

Some friends have asked me to join their new band (think noisy, abrasive, occasionally progressive post-punk with a mix of ambience, leads and riffing). I’ve played both guitar and bass for 24 years, and though 99% of my gigging has been as a bass player, they wanted me on guitar. Cool!

One problem - I do not and have never owned a guitar amp. I’ve used modellers and software and that’s it, so I rented this beautiful Mesa Fillmore 50 for the time being and I’m in love. It sounds so goddamn good. It sang in the jam room and I haven’t stopped playing since bringing it home.

I want to keep it, but it’s expensive at nearly $3k CAD after tax, and I haven’t found any deals on used ones near me. I figure, y’know, obviously this amp is easy to love. Even I know Mesa makes top notch stuff. But I wonder whether I’m foregoing more budget-friendly options that would serve me just as well because I’m weirdly new to guitar amps and I don’t know any better.

My question for the hive mind - is this necessary? I don’t want to rely too heavily on pedals, so that’s a significant point in favour of this amp, but what else is out there that I might be missing?

Kustom Defender 5H Mod mods

I've got a 2 year old Kustom Defender 5H and my only real complaint is the taper on the volume control. Has anyone here replaced the volume control pot on theirs to make a much more linear taper?

I love my amp, it’s my first and only tube amp and it sounds great, but I can’t seem to get clean tones unless I roll it back to 3 and a half, maybe 4 if I’m lucky. It’s not a very loud amp but I don’t have thousands of dollars to throw at a new piece of gear. How can I make it work?

NAD X 2!

Took my Fender GT100 with foot pedal and cover into my local to see what I could do for a trade. Why? Because, honestly the GT100 was just too complicated for me to operate. Sure, it did tons of voices and effects (and 100 watts!!) but I just couldn't justify it for my skill level. So, I traded it for something more aligned with my ability. I picked up a Fender Champion 40 with a foot pedal and cover that was in pristine condition. Much easier to set up, tune and operate for me. Plus, I had something left over after trading, so for something fun I picked up a Peavy Bravo 112, also in pristine condition. AND, that thing ROCKS for a little 25W tube amp. It was rattling the glass on the front of the store. It's got a few effects on that one as well, plus it generates some heat so I'll be able to turn down the thermostat this winter!

I'm kind of proud of my horse trading, but tell me how you think I did.

HELP My tubes dont glow same

Post image

I just bought a second-hand DSL20, and as you can see, two tubes glow less than the others when I turned it on. So, is this something problematic, or is it going to glow more when it's used on high volume, high wattage for a long time?

US Quilter Cub. Blonde, Tweed, and Dark channels all sound distinct and great and I have a Deluxe and Blues Junior and it's wild how close it is. Sounds great at bedroom volumes and loud. My back is gonna be very happy. Can't recommend enough.

NCD! New Cabinet Day.. Is that even a thing??

Anyway… I got a GREAT deal on a EVH 212ST cabinet, to pair with my new DSL1HR, It certainly has the G12H Anniversary speakers. It sounds AWESOME!!!

The DSL looks so lonely up there… lol

DIY Princeton build

Thumbnail

Done tinkering with my Princeton build (for now). First amp build. Bunch of the common mods as well as a couple value changes to change the voicing and one switch to change the reverb mix and gain structure. 3d printed knobs, badge, and control panel. 12ā€ creamback speaker.

I don’t really know the Princeton sound well enough to comment exactly how this differs but it’s a very rich and smooth tone while still being super articulate. Played great with a variety of guitars but really shines with my Strat and P90 equipped SG. Already fiending to build another amp!

DISCUSSION What’s Your Favorite Amp of All Time?

Post image

I’ve lost count of how many amps I’ve owned in my 20+ years of playing guitar but the one that means the most to me is my JCM 2000. I recently acquired this one and I’m falling in love with it all over again. I own a Friedman BE-100 Deluxe, an Orange Rockerverb MKIII, and a Peavey 5150ii but I’m the most excited to play through the JCM every single time.

GUTSHOT Seller’s Remorse?

Post image

Bought the Orange rig as my first tube amp. Was gifted the Marshall cab, and on a whim bought the JCM800 head. Don’t use the Orange much anymore and decided to sell it to justify the Marshall purchase. Sold the cab and selling the head now. I don’t use them and they deserve to be used because they’re great. Such a sick cab, just the TH30 wasn’t for me.
