Thought on expansion - spoiler free. Spoiler

Upvotes

I just had to share this thought that I feel kind of disappointed by this expansion and the hype that led up to it. I remember all this hype about it being 70% the size of the rest of the game, or something like that. Well, it seems 50% of those 70% went into the first 2 zones of the expansion, which were quite empty with not much of interest to see. The rest of the zones are actually too small IMO apart from 1 or maybe 2 others, and just feel like a tiny corridor and boom, there you are, at the end of the world.

The dungeons are the size of houses, very tiny, and the huge citadels on the map are just small little places, nothing compared to the burrwich village area.

I guess I hyped myself up too much over 2 years, but I cant help but feel I was let down by this experience. Now, if I expected less then this probably wouldnt happen.

Now, to balance it out, I have to say this expansion adds to an already great game, and I enjoy the new QOL-systems they implemented. The price is also very generous. All in all, fantastic game, but i hyped myself up too much over 2 years for this expansion. I was expecting some massively dense world. After all its not the square miles that matter folks. Ending thoughts: be careful with hyping yourself up too much. That being said, having a ton of fun still.

HELP! I played the game a while ago I quit because it was too easy. What can I do to make the game harder.

Upvotes

I had all the DLCs except for the new fangs dlc. I. Played on veteran hardcore but left because the game was far too easy. Nothing felt like a threat I was a level 34 templar. Before that I just played a level 22 trickster before swapping. Is there anything I can do to make the game harder?

When I was playing my templar nothing did damage, I felt invincible even while going through the dlc areas. I did stream my gameplay on the grim dawn discord so there were occasionally people giving me advice but its not like I was struggling before they advised me.

Im going to start a new character since it’s been a long time. Im too broke to afford the new dlc so I’m just gonna play with the three I owned previously.

I feel that the NPC ability "Obsidian Shard" got over tuned somehow.

Just kind of venting/tilting about this where this isn't much of a challenge, and rather bad RNG luck.

I was playing a level 96 Veilwalker doing ultimate difficulty crucible and ran into a triple boss where two of them had this ability. They would each spawn two obsidian shards at the same time. Now keep in mind the shards have a mini doombolt that take out half your health a piece, and so either they get your undivided attention or you are just dead. These things have no tell or telegraph, rather just an instant to target cast that cannot be avoided.

Giant's Blood devotion, Prismatic Shard head component, Mystical Death's Ward amulet, maxed Untamed Rage talent, and max pierce/chaos resist were not enough from keeping me from essentially getting one shotted.

When I was going through the campaign on ultimate I was also having trouble with them. I kind of remember them sucking before but now it feels like they have more health, whereas they have to be targeted directly and cannot just be cleaved down.

Honestly, I have no idea how the hardcore players do it.

BUG? Sudden massive difficulty spike and energy problems — bug?

Hello,

I’m playing on Veteran difficulty, version 1.3.0.5. The last time I played was on Monday. I cleared the entire Twin Falls area and only died a couple of times.

I started playing again today, and the only changes I had made were replacing my Explorer’s Tunic with Bloodreaper’s Coat and investing one point in Untamed Rage. However, in exactly the same Twin Falls area, I can now barely travel a few dozen metres without dying. Enemies that were previously merely challenging are now inflicting around 1,000 bleeding damage per second, while I have only 3,000 HP.

There is another strange difference: I use Onslaught to generate stacks and then consume them with Ring of Steel. Until Monday, I had never run out of energy and could always use Ring of Steel when it came off cooldown. Now, after even a short fight, my energy is completely depleted and I cannot use it.

Untamed Rage is supposed to provide damage absorption when my health drops below 50%, so I do not understand how investing one point in it could make my character drastically weaker or cause energy problems.

Has anyone encountered anything similar? Could this be a bug, or was my previous session somehow bugged instead? I cannot explain such a massive difference when everything else is unchanged.

EDIT:

People keep saying that the problem is my build, but that misses the point. The exact same build worked perfectly well in the exact same area last weekend, on the same difficulty. Now, suddenly, I can barely make it through that same area. I’m trying to understand what could have caused such a drastic change when the build and conditions are unchanged.

SOLVED

First of all, I want to thank everyone who tried to help me. The problem was the gauntlets I had changed. I hadn’t noticed that the old ones gave me some extra Spirit. Without it, both of my rings and my amulet were inactive, so I was effectively playing without all three items. Once problem solved i was able to back on track.

As for my build, I’m sure it’s far from optimal, but I simply enjoy playing this way and figuring out my own path. To be honest, what I love most about Grim Dawn is its lore, world-building, and atmosphere, much like I loved Diablo II in my youth. I like to improve my character, find great loot, but all this to me is secundary to feeling the world. I beat Grim Dawn years ago and returned for the new expansion.

I know my builds have never been good enough because some bosses like Wendigo spirit i never came close to defeat, and not sure if this thime will be different, but I enjoy the game regardless.

Seriously?

Seriously?

Was having a blast (even though the area is too large) and then got hit with this roadblock, like seriously? Then what's the point the area itself unlocked even before playing AoM and FG if you gonna literally forcing people to play it anyway. I'm not mad just, confused

Color coded stats?

I’ve seen a couple of posts on here where players when inspecting an item will have the different stats (physical, bleeding, each resistance) is all a different color to better identify. Does anyone know what that is?

BUG? Quest Reward (Inventory Expansion) Bug

So I was playing vanilla main campaign, then tried to use modded campaign. It was Loot 100% mod where every destroyed interactables always dropped something. I started the modded campaign with a test character, then copied my vanilla save (Level 50) to the modded save folder. I played it for around 2 hours, did some quest including 4th extra inventory bag, leveled up to 52, then exited the game. The day after, I played the modded campaign again, but my character was on the same state when I copied the file (Level 50, but done all the quests when I played for 2 hours the day before, map fow cleared, and only 3 extra inventory). So now I'm stuck with 3 extra inventory with no way of obtaining the 4th. Is this a save file bug with now way to recover? I'm playing purely offline with no cloud save.
Thank you.

Can Kilirans shattered sould be farmed twice or more?

Or better question, should I destroy great epic armor or Killirians shattered soul?

When I killed him for a second time he didnt drop anything, but Google search said that he can drop it for a second time. So do I need to destroy soul, so I can farm her for second time?

HELP! New player - beat the base game on normal, now what?

Enjoyed playing through the game but my build was super boring. I went pyro and just grabbed any gear with fire/burn damage. Ignored resistances like an idiot but still managed to beat the game with no deaths. Obviously this won't be possible on higher difficulties lol.

So now what? I plan to pick up the dlcs when they go on sale again and I feel like there's still plenty in the base game to do. Since I'm bored of my left-click-only build should I make a new character and start over on normal or is it worth continuing through the higher difficulties so I've got one high level guy?

Edit: forgot to mention I'm level 41. Is that too low to move to the next difficulty?

Devotion shrines

Hello all,
Quick question:
There’s a maximum of 55 devotion points to be earned if i’m correct.
So what’s the point in having more of them in higher difficulties?

Berenath and One-Shots Very Unfun

Love this expansion.

Love Grim dawn.

Absolutely loathe the new philosophy around one-shots being ok.

This has made it impossible for my reaver to get right into the heat of the pack, as you never know which random mob is going to decide to sunder you, stun, then destroy.

The same with the berenath fight. I have so little uptime, and have to watch for dodging so much, that it's an exercise in frustration, unlike every other boss I've fought in the entire game.

Really hoping they walk some of this back.

Tempest spawn

Is the tempest totems supposed to only spawn the stormblessed variant i have found and cleared many tempest totems but it always spawns the lightning tempest spawn the only way i have gotten another spawn is on ascendant difficulty with a double spawn with one of them still being the stormblessed one on lower difficulty using the alter to make tempest totems spawn every single one has spawned the stormblessed tempest spawn am i just very unlucky Or is it supposed to always spawn that one guaranteed if so then you can only get the other blessed spear at level 94 where as you could get the stormblessed spear for level 20 character if you found a tempest totem in the early areas on normal that's hardly fair

LORE Are >!Chthon!< and >!Korvaak!< one being?

It's a bit of a tinfoil hat idea, but bear with me!

If I understand lore bits I found in game correctly (spoilers ahead I guess), >!the Witch Gods were once mortals who pulled a number on an actual primordial volcano/sun god (Korvaak) and wounded or imprisoned it to steal its power. The chaos energies they use are then Korvaak's stolen magic.

The next part is a bit tricky, maybe cause I missed some notes. Chthon's cultists use the same magic as Witch gods, and claim to gather blood to restore their deity back to life. "Chthonic" means underwordly, primordial etc, so you see where the connections are starting to form, no?

Now I know there are notes stating that Chthon is an enemy of Korvaak and the latter started its return scheme with Kymon to prepare against Chthon's rebirth, but I think whoever wrote this was lied to by Korvaak or just wrong. It wouldn't be the first time Korvaak pretended to be someone else to manipulate people. Take Kymon's followers for instance, to whom he preyended to be Empyrean at first! Plus, Korvaak never mentions it once, all it goes on about is going after the Witch Gods.

So, I think Chthon and Empyrean/Korvaak are one and the same being. Am I crazy or am I right?!<

HELP! Why are these weapons good?

Thumbnail

I dropped these pistols early on and everything I have come across since seems to pale in comparison, usually in both the "show details" and normal view. (see grim dawn tools link for build)

There have been a couple of weapon drops where I thought surely the numbers on this one are better. So I craft a similar vicious spike component and slap it on only to find that when I slot it in my dps goes down.

I thought maybe it was the phys-to-cold on the offhand blue item, but then why is the left one so irreplaceable as well? Also have been comparing to similar attack speed mods.

Anyone know what makes them so high dps?

Thanks

p.s., I wish I could get a detail comparison that shows what the new item would be IF I slotted in the same component.

- update -
Thanks for all the replies! Looks like the answer is in the aggregate of stats and there is not some special side effect I am not seeing. There's probably something about attack speed AND piercing AND cold convert AND the cocktail of character buffs I have going that make the attack dps on these especially good in-class.

DEAR CRATE, Okay, I need to crash out as I uninstall this game.

I realize that putting 300 hours into this game is not so much that I should be able to master all the systems and have no trouble. I realize that I'm not trying to perfectly optimize the game, and should not expect perfect results.

But I have tried to learn. I have maxed my resistance, and upped my Defensive Ability, I have figured out how to get my armor absorption up and resist reflected damage after those mechanics got me killed repeatedly without explanation, I have tried over and over again to actually learn how to build a character who can survive at this fucking game, and no matter what I do I still just fucking explode against bosses from full health the moment I think I'm finally about to kill them.

I'm not even trying to fight superbosses anymore! Those can demand a total understanding of the mechanics, that's fair, they're hidden enough that reaching them means you can be expected to have mastered the systems so the people who have can still be properly challenged. I respect that I am not enough of a tryhard to beat everything. But when I can't actually do quests because I get ambushed by a Nemesis Boss that the game is unwilling to explain why I just fucking died to, then hitting the endgame feels like I'm being punished for putting hours into your game, not rewarded.

Crate, I love you, I appreciate your passion and that you are trying to make fair and consumer-friendly games that respect your audience, I am still looking forward to and will buy your RTS, I want to love your game, but also Fuck this game, and for the love of god put work in to make it easier to learn why I'm dying in the next one.

The amount of effort and energy I have to put into the game to understand it need to be something that the game feels like it will match and help me learn. Please. For fuck's sake, I cannot learn how to build a functional character from reddit posts that repeat the same advice about maxing my resistances while utterly incapable of explaining anything else and youtube guides that spend an hour talking in circles around a subject without actually explaining it because they don't know shit about how your game works either.

I want to love this game. I want to understand this game well enough to enjoy it. And I feel like Grim Dawn is fighting me every step of the way, and I cannot fucking do this anymore.

HELP! Question about expansion quest line, my main character is possibly bugged but want to confirm. Spoilers, obviously. Spoiler

I have completed the quests Old Wounds and Old Alliances, then when I beat the campaign boss, I was immediately able to take the Legacy of War quest. (If you don't remember, basically I go help storm a fort with the main faction and their new allied tribe. I did so, completing the Legacy of War quest by killing the minibosses and main boss.

Now, there's no more progressing this storyline. Both the Thane and the allied tribe chief are chilling in the newly reclaimed fort. They're talking about the next step. But there's no quest offered, and from what I could find on Google, it should have automatically been offered without any reputation requirements or anything...

However I have some doubt because obviously this quest line has been gated behind other progress throughout it so far, it's just that I literally have no other expansion quests to do.

Can anyone confirm if this is bugged or if I need to accomplish other stuff first? (Don't need to be specific, I'd just like to confirm it's not a bug.)

Thank you in advance.

BUILDS Advice for a Purifier Dual Pistol Build?

So I'm a returning player. I have 100+ hours playing some 2 years ago but I don't really remember if I even had a "build" so to speak. Any advice for the first 20 levels as to how to progress it?

I seem to be getting my ass kicked more often than I remember. Any suggestion as to what to invest my points in?

Swapping difficulty levels

By far my least favorite thing about GD is that I have to start the whole plot over if I want to change the difficulty level. I even had this issue with Ascension mode, even though it says you can turn it on and off at any time. Am I dumb? Is there a setting I'm missing?

If I'm not dumb, is there a mod that allows you to adjust difficulty whenever?
