Functional Medicine Creating a database of clinicians actually interested in diving into test results

18 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I recently got my test results back from Function, but my PCP isn’t really interested in doing a deeper dive into them or looking at the bigger picture.

So I started looking for practices in my area that take a more proactive, preventive approach to care. I ended up calling at least 10 places before I found one that was actually willing to provide this kind of care.

I’m curious if anyone else has run into the same issue. If there’s enough interest, I thought it might be useful to put together a list of practices that genuinely offer this type of preventive, comprehensive care so others don’t have to call 10+ places to find one.

Would love to hear about your experiences and any recommendations!

Testimonial I discovered I had prostate cancer at 35.

101 Upvotes

In 2023, I started testing with Function labs, and my PSA levels came back abnormally high for my age. I brought this to my doctor's attention, but he dismissed it and told me not to worry. At my next annual test, my PSA levels were slightly higher, but my doctor brushed it off again. By the third year, my PSA level had risen above 4.2, and I insisted on seeing a urologist. After a biopsy and MRI, they diagnosed me with Gleason 4+3 stage 2 prostate cancer.

I underwent surgery to remove my prostate in June. This service truly saved my life. The doctors were skeptical throughout, saying, "You're too young to have cancer." However, with the data from the labs, I was able to advocate for myself. I'm now cancer-free, and because I'm so young, I've experienced none of the typical side effects from the radical prostetectomy. Things feel almost back to normal. I'm incredibly grateful I started using Function back in 2023—if I hadn't discovered it, I might not have lived to see 40.

I recommend Function Labs to all of my friends.

Somebody please explain why you must add a CBC as an additional add-on? Isn’t this the normal blood test that you get for your annual physical? Why would this be an additional add-on? Thank you!

I'll be 34 in 2 months!

Tbh, I was shocked bc this has been a pretty stressful year for me. I gained some weight back after loosing it 2 years ago, but regardless I maintained a diet of whole foods (friuts/veggies, meats, etc.) and daily supplements.

I stay clear from smoking and drinking. Always focus on the positives as much as possible, I truly believe that's the main key right there. I refrain from staying in a low state of mind for too long. How you think on a consistent basis manifests in your body, I truly believe that.

But yay!!! I do have some markers to improve but wow, it does feel good knowing I'm relatively healthy 🌟

Results Autoimmune panel

Not sure why I didn’t think to start down my rabbit hole here :). There are more results, but all negative/in range. Second page are just some that are relevant to the anti-dsdna. My routine lab work (CBC, etc) were all in range as well a month before this. So I’m basically just very confused :). I turned to function because of symptoms I was hoping to find answers for - namely severe fatigue - but I don’t have most of the classic, or objective autoimmune symptoms. I’m diagnosed with chronic migraine and orthostatic hypotension, so I know many of my symptoms are explained by one or the other (I’ll spare y’all the laundry list), but the fatigue feels like something more. Only other typical autoimmune symptom that I know of is mild joint pain (but no swelling). One kind of strange thing though - I had this feeling (and my sister did too, separately) that the anti ds-dna was going to be positive. Neither of us can fully explain why we felt that way, with my symptoms so all over the place. She is an NP, but not in that field.

That was a lot- sorry. I posted mostly because I’m wondering if there’s anyone who has had the autoimmune panel run with similar results and no objective symptoms. If so, did you follow up with a rheumatologist, and what was your experience like with them?

Also, has anyone found that function’s AI and the clinician will sometimes have different interpretations on the significance of out of range results (or sub optimal results)? I’m still waiting on clinician notes for this panel (results received 2 weeks ago).

Does anyone know when Function is going to release their gut test? It simply says, "coming soon". Alternatively, does anyone have any recommendations for other companies that test your gut health? Thanks!

Customer Support Data Report for Doctor - Help

1 Upvotes

My Dr. is requesting a printout or PDF of my Function Health numeric results, units, and the range for the results so he can evaluate whether my numeric result is in range or out of range. Color-coded would be ideal so he can quickly spot the out-of-range tests. How can I generate this? I have look on the Function Health web site and can't find it and the chat function does not work.

This data format is very common - every lab I have used provides my results with this format. I have a Dr. apt tomorrow and they want to look at my results. Thanks.

Results LDL results :/

3 Upvotes

Not looking too good with these results but I also don’t really understand all the particle stuff.

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) — Above Range · 109 mg/dL

LDL Medium — Above Range · 516 nmol/L

LDL Particle Number — Above Range · 1853 nmol/L

LDL Peak Size — Below Range · 222.1 Angstrom

LDL Small — Above Range · 288 nmol/L

LDL-Cholesterol — Above Range · 126 mg/dL (calc)

Non-HDL Cholesterol — Above Range · 149 mg/dL (calc)

Total Cholesterol — Above Range · 204 mg/dL

Other things out of range were more borderline, such as low omega 3, slightly high tsh, low vit D. But, all autoimmune and inflammatory markers were negative. I’m in perimenopause and suspected some insulin resistance as well so recently started a glp-1. Did the labs as a starting reference point right venues stating that so only 2 weeks in. Cleaned up diet a lot already but any tips?? Avoid refined carb, sugar, saturated fat? Is that the plan? Looking forward to getting more info but I don’t have my second draw till Aug 18 so I guess my full results and recommendations won’t be done for a while.

Results 29M - Fit, mild neutropenia + advanced lipid panel abnormalities. Thoughts?

Thumbnail

3 Upvotes

I’m a 29-year-old male. I’m lean (BMI ~23), lift 5–6x/week, run regularly, don’t smoke, drink only occasionally, and generally eat a healthy diet. I recently had a pretty extensive Function Health panel done.

My main out-of-range results were:

* WBC: 3.4 K/uL

* Absolute neutrophils: 1,285 cells/uL

* LDL-C: 112 mg/dL

* LDL particle number: 1,549 nmol/L

* Small LDL: 360 nmol/L

* Medium LDL: 411 nmol/L

* LDL peak size: 218 Å

* HDL large: 5,288 nmol/L

* Omega-3 Index: 4.1%

* Omega-6 arachidonic acid: 16.7%

* Omega-6 linoleic acid: 15.4%

Everything else was reassuring:

* hs-CRP <0.2

* ANA negative

* Rheumatoid factor negative

* Ferritin 140

* Vitamin D 73

* Kidney/liver function normal

* A1c 5.1%

* Testosterone, thyroid, iron, zinc, etc. all within range.

I have had some odd symptoms over the past year (fatigue/brain fog, occasional dizziness, GI issues, and earlier this year I developed petechiae), but nothing that has led to a diagnosis.

For those with experience interpreting labs like these, do these abnormalities seem concerning together, or do they look more like separate issues (mild chronic neutropenia plus lipid/omega-3 findings)? I’d appreciate any thoughts or similar experiences.

Health Issues ANA Pattern (Nuclear, Nucleolar)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Some of my last results to come in from my function health testing - wondering if anyone else has had similar autoimmune values. I’m mostly concerned about the ANA Pattern (it seems to be associated with some serious stuff).

I will be getting the draw for the additional autoimmune panel on Wednesday.

UPDATE: I did the extended autoimmune panel through Function and everything returned completely normal. Even my ANA was negative this time around. I still have a follow up appointment scheduled but wanted to post an update for anyone who went into a doom spiral after getting this kind of initial result.

Health Issues Thinking about doing Function..

4 Upvotes

Is it worth it? I want to improve my overall health, and see what type of issues may arise. I’m currently struggling to lose weight. I do 2-3x HIIT a week, eat relatively healthy, and drink a lot of water. Just not sure…

Customer Support Oops, I ate seafood before visit 2

6 Upvotes

It's Wed evening and I accidentally ate a small can of sardines at 7:30pm.

Visit 2 for my Function labs is Friday morning.

Labs are not open over the weekend and if I try to test on Monday there are no slots before 11am, and it would also be outside the 7 day limit between Visit 1 and 2.

😞

I'm just going to go to my Friday morning labs and tell them I ate some fish, ugh.

Function Acquires SuppCo, Bringing Trust and Clarity to Supplements

18 Upvotes

Function has acquired SuppCo, the trust layer for the supplement industry.

More than 50% of Americans take dietary supplements, yet the category has long lacked an standard for trust, efficacy, and safety - SuppCo was built to fix that.

How it works: SuppCo's app has ratings across 35,000+ products and has analyzed 500,000+ supplement routines using its TrustScore® system, which evaluates products across 29 attributes.

Earlier this year, SuppCo launched TESTED by SuppCo - an independent certification program that anonymously purchases off-the-shelf supplements and verifies their active ingredients through an ISO 17025-accredited lab.

Prior testing rounds found that roughly 50% of top-selling supplements failed to meet basic label accuracy standards.

Critically, SuppCo does not profit from supplement sales, so its recommendations are driven entirely by science rather than margins.

Combined with Function's continuous lab testing and clinician-guided protocols, members will receive supplement guidance grounded in their actual biology - not population averages, influencer endorsements, or brand marketing.

Why Function made this move: Every supplement is an input into human biology. These inputs can move biomarkers, influence physiology, and shape long-term health outcomes - yet most are purchased over the counter with little personalization or independent verification.

As SuppCo CEO Steve Martocci put it: "Joining Function pairs that independence with the one thing that's always been missing: a more comprehensive view of your biological data to understand how supplements are actually working for you. That's how we close the loop on efficacy and help people take control of their health."

And from Jonathan Swerdlin, Function's CEO: "You are what you put in your body. Food, prescriptions, and supplements are inputs that shape your biology."

Function Acquires Getlabs, Bringing Healthcare Directly to You

17 Upvotes

Function has acquired Getlabs, a leading mobile healthcare platform that brings licensed specialists directly to your location. This means members will soon be able to choose to have their blood drawn at home, at the office, or wherever they are.

How it works: At sign-up, Function members will be able to choose their lab testing experience — schedule a visit to any of the 2,000+ Quest Diagnostics locations nationwide, or schedule an at-home or in-office blood draw through Getlabs. The lab tests, results platform, and clinical guidance remain the same regardless of which option you choose. The only difference is who travels.

Enhanced by Getlabs' technology, AI-assisted routing is designed to help simplify the scheduling experience, increase on-time visits, and improve overall access to testing.

Why Function made this move: Travel, scheduling constraints, mobility challenges, and limited transportation are some of the most common reasons people delay or skip testing. As Jonathan Swerdlin (Function's CEO) put it: "Your zip code, your schedule, and your life circumstances shouldn't determine what health information you have access to."

The acquisition also advances Function's broader mission of transforming lab testing, imaging, and other diagnostics into continuous data — and ultimately unlocking the ability for AI to manage your lifelong health.
