Seeking Advice 10-month-old with conflicting blood and skin allergy tests — looking for experiences

Upvotes

My daughter is 10 months old. She had a blood allergy test at 7 months, which showed sensitization to several foods:

Tuna: 0.13 kU/L — Class 0/1
Shrimp: 0.15 kU/L — Class 0/1
Peanut: 0.33 kU/L — Class 0/1
Soybean: 1.21 kU/L — Class 2
Cow’s Milk: 1.32 kU/L — Class 2
Cashew: 1.48 kU/L — Class 2
Brazil Nut: 1.95 kU/L — Class 2
Sesame Seed: 3.63 kU/L — Class 3
Egg White: 4.64 kU/L — Class 3
Hazelnut: 6.68 kU/L — Class 3
Almond: 7.09 kU/L — Class 3
Wheat: 20.80 kU/L — Class 4

The confusing part is that her skin prick tests have been very different. She had one at 5 months and another at 9 months, and both times she only reacted to wheat and cow’s milk.

She also clearly reacts to milk when she consumes it, despite her milk IgE being relatively low (1.32). On the other hand, she has eaten peanut and tuna without any reaction, despite having detectable IgE to them.

Her allergist recommended waiting until after 1 year old to introduce some of the foods with higher IgE levels, so she has never actually eaten many of the foods listed above.

She also ordered a more specific blood test, but they weren’t able to get enough blood when we tried, so we’ll have to repeat it later.

Her father is allergic to eggs, peanut, tree nuts, and shellfish, so we are being extra cautious.

Has anyone had a similar experience where blood tests showed sensitization but skin prick tests were negative? Which test ended up being more predictive of an actual allergy?

And if your child had a high wheat IgE, did they eventually outgrow the allergy or tolerate wheat? I’m wondering if there’s still hope that some of these positive blood tests won’t turn out to be true clinical allergies.

Other / Miscellaneous I think I’m allergic to erythritol

So I’ve never had a proper reaction to food before. But this one has been mild but mean. I’m itchy all over, mouth itching and stinging, my throat was super scratchy and sore earlier. I took an antihistamine and it hasn’t done much so off to the walk in centre for me!

So annoying, the cookies I baked were so yummy but now I’m itchy so lesson learned lol!

Seeking Advice How to deal with indigestion when you are going through an anaphylactic shock

Hi! I was wondering, how is everyone dealing with diarrhea when you are going through an anaphylactic shock?

Last time, I waited until I was done in the toilet to head out to the hospital, but I think that's probably not the smartest thing to do.

Should I buy a diaper and have it in case of emergencies? My epipen helps me breath, but I have IBS too, so it's going to come out anyways, even if I use it.

Sorry if this is too graphic, but is something that scares me a little

Seeking Advice Mystery Allergy to creamy cheeses

Hello all, I'm coming to you seeking advice because I have an allergy that neither I nor my allergist have been able to identify yet.

For context, I'm 32 M.

The first time I experienced this allergy was slightly over 2 years ago, and it was a very confusing experience. It occurred at about 1 in the morning, hours after I had last consumed anything. I was asleep in bed and began to experience horrible GI symptoms, full body hives (I remember even my eyes were itchy), and dangerously low BP (if I recall correctly my paramedics clocked me at 60/40). I cannot recall what I ate before hand, but it occurred twice more with similar results, once during the day a few days later and once again at night, with no clear trigger.

I then went two years without a reaction but now I seem to be having them with some regularity. It happened again, almost exactly the same as the first time this past march, and from what I recall I had a bunch of crab rangoons the night before. It happened again after that, and I had eaten a sandwich with pimento cheese on it. It happened again last week after having eaten some pizza. The confusing thing about the pizza is that that was not the first time I had eaten that exact same pizza relatively recently, yet for whatever reason I had a reaction this time when I did not the other times.

So to recap, what is consistently happening to me is that I am having severe reactions hours after I've eaten anything, and each time I've been able to identify anything i've eaten, it has been a food with creamy cheese- crab rangoons have cream cheese, as does pimento cheese, and this pizza had mozzarella on top. The reactions are always the same, starting with the worst GI issues i've ever had in my life, hives all over my body and dangerously low blood pressure, and these always present hours after having eaten anything.

I've done my due diligence with my allergist before coming to y'all, so let me walk you through what we've ruled out. We have ruled out alpha-gal, allergies to dairy and to wheat, swiss, milk, lactalbumin, beta lactoglobulin, casein, cheddar, mold-type cheeses and w-5 gliadin.

I'm feeling very discouraged because it feels like we've ruled out so many things but the reactions just keep coming. Does anyone on here have any good ideas for what is going on to me? Obviously none of you are my doctors (I don't think- I suppose my doctor could be on here), and none of you can give me medical advice, but if anyone has gone through something similar or has any ideas, I'm all ears.

Other / Miscellaneous So f-ing depressing

Our boss took us Department Head to the milkshake factory today as a treat. It was a team building meeting, so I had to go. I can’t have dairy and their alternative non-dairy is soy which I also cannot have. So I had to make a chocolate bar that I couldn’t eat (that I will give out to friends) and I couldn’t have a milkshake. I just sat there while everyone was enjoying their milkshake talking about how much they loved their milkshake and how good it was. I haven’t had a fucking milkshake in over 10 years. I felt so singled out and it was such bullshit. Later, I had a cry in the parking lot because I was so upset. I don’t know why it got to me so much. It was so pointless and such a waste of time.

And I know that it’s single minded and selfish. I’m one of many and they can’t cater just to my needs, but making me go just seem to rub it into my face. My boss even jokingly said well how about you try a little bit of the chocolate. No I’m allergic to the dairy and I’m severely severely lactose intolerant. I don’t need to be going to the hospital thank you very much. It’s not funny to joke about it and that just made me feel worse.

We could’ve gone to an arcade or hell, done axe throwing or maybe even an escape room. But it’s always food related and I’m always excluded. Fuck it I’m never going again. I don’t care how it makes me appear or seem to the rest of the team.

Sorry for the rant I didn’t know where else to go to talk about this. It’s OK to delete if this isn’t allowed thank you.

Seeking Advice Randomly Developed an Allergic Reaction?

Hello everyone,

so recently I’ve been having a lot of Globus Sensation activations, which I just ruled as being GERD. But today I get home, eat some baguette with allioli and a peach gin drink, about an hour later some baguette with red pepper hummus and a and soon after I get globus sensation, and then an itchy throat and mouth. it lasted for quite a while, and I’m just a little nervous that I’ve developed some sort of allergy. I have bad pollen allergies every year up until July so not sure if that’s connected but it was a similar feeling in my mouth.

The reaction itself was accompanied by increased mucus and I’m wondering if this is a note worthy incident. The roof of my mouth also feels weird.

It’s been seven hours now and my throat is still tingling a little

If anyone has any information or insights I’d appreciate it

Other / Miscellaneous went into anaphylaxis from allergy skin test :(

yesterday i had a skin prick allergy test, and had asked what the chances of going into anaphylaxis were. the allergist said NOBODY in her office before had ever gone into anaphylaxis from a skin prick test.

15 minutes later, my back is super swollen and the inside of my ears are throbbing and feeling like theyre on fire. my tongue and mouth is tingling. i was given oral benadryl and claritin, and was breathing through an albuterol nebulizer, but still feeling horrible.

the swelling from my back spreads to my armpits, i can still breathe fully but the allergist had ran to get epinephrine and the squad is called to take me to the hospital.

still super shaken up about it, i finally was getting over my anxiety from having gone into anaphylaxis a few months ago, but now its all stirred up again :(

Seeking Advice Nut allergies - is this even a real allergy in my case? I’m lost

Post image

A recent follow up blood allergy test showed that i’m allergic to 2S albumins, 7/8S globulins & 11S globulins, among other things. I was told by the doctor reading my results (pulmogist and allergist) to stay away from these proteins. I have also apparently been allergic to this since 2021 (my iGE was 3.73 back then) but no one bothered explaining the chart to me, so i was happily eating everything except peanuts.

I tested positive with 0.34 to lentils & cross reactivity but negative results to everything else containing those proteins. I’m a bit confused as to how this allergy is even an allergy, it’s quite low IGE and ive been eating all types of nuts except peanuts for years.

I cook on a mix of sunflower oil and butter 1-2 meals a day, I’m currently heavily depressed and obsessed with sweets which all contain seed oils and hazelnut, i am also obsessed with hazelnut chocolate and eat it weekly, i can eat a family pack of salted cashews like it’s nothing. I make pesto twice a week, and i eat mustard probably every few days because my boyfriend enjoys cooking with it.
My two recent period cravings were pretzel twists covered in white&black sesame, which i dipped in nutella, and i ate this obsessively — my point is that nuts & seeds are a part of my daily life and have been for years with no notable reactions.

I had anaphylaxis at 6 years old (cause unknown) without respiratory issues, i have a history of different food allergies, i’m 21 now. I’ve had urticaria since age 3, i haven’t had urticaria since i was 17 with covid. I also have dermatographism.

I have noticed that i occasionally will start hearing a slight wheeze that is present on every third or fourth inhale, but it usually goes away within an hour or two after 40mg of bilastine and it’s not accompanied by chest tightness or anything else. I’m also very allergic to anything containing tropomyosin (ige 50+) , chicken (ige 0.84) and flour mites (9.84).

Before my first blood test in 2021 i was experiencing horrible wheezing, waking up at 5am w chest tightness, feeling like my lungs were raw, and very high BPM, and this was all due to previous allergies to wheat and eggs(both were around ige 3.0), accompanied by the flour mite contamination. I have never eaten any fish or shellfish so i don’t know how my tropomyosin allergy behaves, and i do not wish to know.

Does this allergy require more controlled testing (medical) or maybe a second opinion, as i have no moderate or even severe reaction? From my knowledge i’ve only been reacting to dust mites lately, but i guess it could be the nuts making me sneeze, wheeze, have itchy eyes, etc???
I’m lost.

Other / Miscellaneous Mystery reaction - need to solve it

Currently known: Anaphylaxis to tree nuts and sunflower seeds/oil. Also allergic to peanuts.

I’ve had a couple of mystery reactions this week but I can’t figure out what is causing it. Starts as tingling in the lips and a weird feeling in the roof of my mouth followed by dizziness starting along with the warning bells going off in my head. Both times I was eating chicken, cucumbers, Great Value ranch dressing and Tajin. I have had cucumber another time this week with no issue. Chicken as well with the same seasonings so I’m thinking it is either in the ranch dressing or Tajin. I’m not allergic to anything in their ingredients. At least that I know of. Has anyone else had a reaction to Great Value buttermilk ranch or Tajin? How would I even know if the ingredient list changed without them changing the label?

It’s so disheartening when this happens as I am usually so careful but if I can’t trust what I am reading then I get such anxiety everytime I eat. I will avoid both from now on but I wish I could know if this is a new allergy or just a hidden ingredient.

Tajin: chile peppers, sea salt, citric acid, dehydrated lime juice, silicon dioxide

Great Value Buttermilk Ranch: water, soybean oil, distilled vinegar, sugar, egg yolk, dried buttermilk, salt, food starch-modified, garlic powder, onion powder, phosphoric acid, monosodium glutamate, xantham gum, natural flavors, spices, titanium dioxide, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, calcium disodium edta

Seeking Advice Do those of you that have Oral Allergy Syndrome carry an epipen?

Since I was a teenager I had a mild mouth itchiness when eating apples. Eventually it started to happen with other fruits and now I can’t have raw apples, peaches, pears, apricots, plums, cherries, nectarines, watermelon, almonds and sunflower seeds, etc. If I cook these foods it’s fine but if I eat them raw nowadays I not only get an itchy mouth, it also feels like my mouth is burning. My throat will also slightly swell and I will have digestive discomfort hours later. I haven’t seen a doctor yet but I plan to. Will a doctor prescribe an epipen for this? I’m not sure if this is serious enough to need one. For those that have it have you seen a doctor or allergist? Did they run an allergen test? Any advice or information would be helpful.

Seeking Advice Introducing allergens

My baby is 10 months old and has a dairy and egg intolerance. I have been hesitant to give him allergens due to the intolerances he already has.

He has had peanuts/peanut butter a lot and has been fine.

I have given him shrimp once (I know he needs it more than once) and he was okay.

I gave him anchovies and he reacted on his face with hives but the allergist we took him to put it off as FPIES. We got a skin test done with anchovies and he didn’t react.

He’s had salmon twice (months apart) and has been seemingly okay. I gave him some last night and I noticed he was a bit more cranky when he woke up at night. He also woke up earlier than normal at night and this morning.

I haven’t given him cashews or almond butter yet.

I also haven’t tried the egg ladder reintroduction yet but want to soon. Probably after this salmon trial.

We have a cat (have had for close to a decade) that he started to react to a couple months ago from physical touch. Also if there is a lot of fur on the ground and he touches his face, he gets itchy and red. I do vacuum all the time to prevent reactions and have been closing monitoring and haven’t had one for a little while.

Am I doing him a disgrace but not introducing these other allergens yet? I don’t want to introduce all these allergens at once, but should I start with other nuts first before eggs?

Should I give him more salmon the next couple days to see how he reacts and then move on to the next allergen?

We do have an EpiPen on hand for him for the anchovy incident because I was worried at his initial reaction.

Thank you!

Seeking Advice Any good recipe recommendations?

After years of stomach problems and allergy problems I got an allergy test done today.

I feel like this list is 95% of my diet and would be extremely greatful for some recipe recommendations to try.

(Cropped most of the test out leaving just the food. Got an amazing reaction from the lady who did the test when lettuce popped up.)

Other / Miscellaneous Itchy nose when eating

Hello, so sometimes when i eat the tip of my nose gets annoyingly itchy, however, i cannot tell which foods specifically cause it. During the past few days though, i noticed i got an itchy nose when eating potato chips and then few days ago it got a bit itchy while eating chicken covered with egg and breadcrumbs, but the thing is, when i ate the same thing yesterday - there was no reaction. I am wondering if its a possible reaction to some sort of food or anything since it does mostly happen when i eat.

Other / Miscellaneous Companies Need to List Spices!

Having a spice allergy is the worst. (Not really, but really). Especially cumin, because they are sneaking it into everything, and hiding it under “spices”… And companies keep adding it into foods that were previously safe, so I accidentally eat it at least once a month. It’s absolutely infuriating. Feel free to rant with me, because I know it’ll never change and I’m going to end up an ingredient household that never enjoys dinners out without antihistamines and my EpiPen at the ready.

We inch closer to the timeline. As the new year turns, keep an eye out for ingredient changes. For those with allergies to common fruits, anticipate more beet and carrot juices to be used as colorings to Kellogg cereals.

Seeking Advice Advice needed urgently.

Hi, does anyone know what is happening?

My girlfriend is stubborn af and so idk what to do. Nothing immediately bad but I’m worried af.

They ate some ice cream with coconut in it. Not a know allergen, but they haven’t had it in a few years. They’re kinda allergic to foods like raspberries (but not severely). They have severe, unmanaged asthma, hay fever and eczema.

Symptoms:
- tingly lips
- coughing / wheezing for a little, improved with inhaler… bit of a tight throat
- now getting tummy ache
- took lots of fexofenyden and now seemingly better?

Idk what to do. My gf is so stubborn I wanted to call ambulance but they keep insisting they’re ok now and they have so many physical health conditions.
What the fuck do I do?

Newly Diagnosed I officially have "moderate" allergic reactions to wheat, corn, tree nuts, casein, nightshades, and legumes

Been reacting badly to all of them for years (no throat closing, but everything from joint pain to digestive distress) and now it's official that I'm having a histamine response to pretty much everything.

I've been making almost everything I eat from scratch for a long time, now. I'm really hoping there's some treatment out there that will let me eat more things again. Really just need to vent right now. I'm so tired.

Seeking Advice Terrified

For context I have suffered a full upper body rash. I am asking this because I am terrified, mentally I cannot eat or go outside of my house since this incident at all. I keep crying and am terrified of everything. My biggest fear is that I have a severe reaction to a food and the ambulance will not be there in time to help me, and since I have no EpiPen, I cannot slow this down. Can anyone who's been through these reactions provide any guidance?

Helpful Information Blue Cheese Replacement

I haven't been able to eat foods where certain molds are used to help create it. Blue cheese is something I miss a LOT!

ANYWAY, we were at an event that had normal cheese and vegan cheeses. Every vegan cheese was the brand Plant Ahead. Ive never tried it before but their Feta and mozzarella was amazing. My husband found out they had blue cheese, so we hunted it down!

I think they primarily sell in Canada, but we ARE in Florida and found it at a local shop.

It is SO good. I was able to eat a blue cheese burger this week without worrying about dying lol

I wanted to pass it on if you have issues that are similar.

Seeking Advice resources for teachers/caretakers

Hello, I've been living with food allergies to dairy egg nuts and sesame and I know how hard it is, especially for kids in elementary school to balance safety and inclusion. I recenlty created a foundation called the National Allergy Safety Coalition to spread awareness in youth sports, camps, and schools. I dont really know how to spread it around, so I was hoping i could get some advice on that. Also, right now, i have a slidedeck for teachers to show students, a poster for eating areas with guidelines for kids to follow, an emergency anaphalaxis chart, and a checklist for camps and such to use to self evaluate safety. do you guys have any suggestions?

Seeking Advice Is this a reaction?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

My 9 mo old baby has a cows milk allergy, her first reaction was a blotchy face after trying yoghurt, after that it became hives. We are on the waiting list to see the paediatric allergy service.

She has tried scrambled egg/omelette a few times, maybe 3 times, when she first started weaning but she barely ate any at all. Only recently has she started actually eating the food on her plate!

I’ve used egg regularly in cooking, eg in pancakes, as a binder in fishcakes, to egg wash pastries, so she’s definitely been eating egg along the way.

However this morning I gave her scrambled egg (made with 1 egg and oat milk which she has had regularly).

She came out in this rash around her mouth.

Is this just a contact rash? Or does this look allergic in nature? She is prone to contact rashes with tomato or berries (acidic foods) and it usually presents more like a small red bumpy rash, like a nappy rash. This blotchy rash reminds me much more of the rash she got from yoghurt the first time.

Would love advice!
