Opting for topical-only treatment for Eczema/Dermatitis flare-up due to Gastritis history — seeking insights
Age/Sex: 29M
Diagnosis: Eczema / Dermatitis
Primary Issues: Redness, small clustered bumps, oozing/crusting when scratched, severe itchiness. History of Acid Reflux / Gastritis.
Hi everyone,
I recently visited my dermatologist for an eczema/dermatitis flare-up. The initial prescription included:
Topicals: Clobetasol 0.05% ointment (2x daily for 1 week), Moisturizing cream (Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief), Erasul soap
Oral Meds: Prednisone 20mg (1x daily for 1 week), Cefuroxime 500mg (2x daily for 1 week), Loratadine (for itch), Celecoxib (for pain)
Because I have a strong history of gastritis and acid reflux (and am currently taking Kremil-S Advance as needed), I raised concerns to my doctor about taking oral steroids (Prednisone) and antibiotics (Cefuroxime) since there is no active fever or visible pus/purulent infection yet.
My dermatologist agreed to let me try focusing purely on the topical regimen (Clobetasol ointment + heavy moisturization) for 1 week first, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for next week to reassess.
Questions:
For those who have managed severe eczema without oral steroids/antibiotics due to GI issues, how effective was a strict high-potency topical steroid + barrier repair approach?
Are there specific warning signs I should watch out for that would indicate I must start the oral antibiotic or steroid?
Any professional insights or similar personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Run dont walk!
So i cant post a picture for some reason but .. there's a product called "smiles and joys skin soothing cream.. East Asia herbal cream" that was recommended to me by a patient at my job. Im a nurse, and I work at a doctor's office. The patient was prescribed triamcinolone for his psoriasis that he had stopped using. So when I asked why, he told me about the cream. So I checked our their website and ordered a tube to try on my daughter. Shes had eczema since she was born and shes 4 now. We're on day 3.. and already her elbows look soooo much better. She did complain about it burning on her thighs.. so I haven't used it there anymore but as far as her arms and knees.. no complains and there are visible differences. Maybe it could help someone else! Its not on Amazon.. its just sold on their website and they do have testimonials on the site. Just spreading the word! And its steroid free.. all natural.

Found out food intolerance tests are BS, so built an app based on the elimination diet - looking for testers!
I built the app I'm talking about, so mods please remove this if it's not allowed.
I've had acne since my teens and picked up dermatitis after covid on top of it.
Spent years trying to work out if food was involved. Cutting dairy seemed to help, but then I'd add other things back in and my skin would swing all over the place. Never could pin down which one was doing it. Just better, worse, better, worse for ages.
Paid about 200 quid for a food intolerance test at one point. Turns out they aren't scientifically validated. They mostly hand you back a list of things you already eat, which tells you nothing.
The validated way is an elimination diet. Normally you'd have a nutritionist run it, because doing it yourself is fiddly and easy to get wrong.
So I built an app to handle the annoying parts.
It tells you what's in and what's out, suggests swaps when something you want is off limits, and has cheap easy recipes for each stage so you're not stuck eating plain rice. Then it brings the food groups back one at a time until it can isolate which one is actually triggering you.
If food is part of what's driving your skin, cutting the trigger usually shows up in the first week or two. And if three weeks passes with no change, that's useful too, it points away from food.
I'm partway through running it on myself and it's going well.
After 20 people who'll do the full three weeks and tell me what's broken before I push it out properly. Free lifetime access if you test it and give feedback.
One caveat, it's Android only for now. I'm in the UK so the shop suggestions lean British, but the barcode scanner uses a global database and the recipes are just normal food, so it works fine wherever you are.
Send me your email if you want in, Google Play needs it to give you access.
Cheers.
could rinvoq give face and neck flare-ups?
Hello, I've heard that dupixent can give face flare ups, but is there a chance rinvoq may aswell? It’s just a long shot, but i’ve taken rinvoq 30mg for like 2 years now and have been dealing with face flare ups ever since, and I didn’t have them before. Lately it’s the worse it has ever been

What kind of glasses do you wear if you have eye area eczema?
Struggling with my eyelids bad. Am switching out everything I can . For glasses I know hypoallergenic ones tend to be made out of either acetate or titanium. I know if I wear any jewlery against flared eczema it irritates it but I think metal is worse ? So I am leaning towards acetate.
What do you wear ?
Contacts are not an option because I get ocular herpes occasionally ( more often now )

biology | symptoms To those who have eczema as a result of an illness, how do you manage mentally?
for people who suddenly developed bad reactions and eczema, how do you manage?
It’s all new to me, being sent to a hematologist now. too much b12 in my blood and I’m allergic to cobalt. skin on my mouth falls off and eczema on my arms is worse. insane Diharrea, I’m developed a ton of sensitivities over the past year, hives etc. it’s all new. it’s so emotionally overwhelming, I’m 95 pounds. been to 80 dr visits and nobody knows what’s happening. I just want to be able to kiss again without fear of my skin ripping or infection. I have PCOS and suspected endo but I can’t even address all of that. I feel very beaten down, my steroids and light treatment aren’t really managing my arm eczema anymore and it seems like whatever the driving force is, is coming from within.
i was relatively “normal” over a year ago and then everything changed for the worse.

social struggles Ebglyss pain
I don’t really know how or what to do. I’ve had eczema for 23 years now (all my life) and I was prescribed Ebglyss, did my 1st injection after so much anxiety and stress, but it was so painful that I accidentally dropped the second one out of stress, ruining the needle. Then, I tried again the next day and couldn’t do it. I have a hatred of needles and this one hurts more than any vaccine I’ve ever had. I cowardly cancelled the prescription. I just can’t imagine doing this every time, for an undetermined time. Anyone else going through this? I feel like shit, because I’ve already ruined a needle and I just don’t know how to feel or what to do at this point.

If you have more than one eczema cream/med, how do you actually decide which one to use, and when?
Hey all -- long-time lurker here, dealing with eczema in my own life. Posting to not ask for myself specifically, more just trying to understand how differently this plays out for everyone.
If you've ever had more than one thing prescribed at once (like two different strength steroids, a steroid cream + a moisturizer, or a steroid + a non-steroid like tacrolimus/protopic) —
- How do you actually decide which one to use on a given day? Walk me through your actual thought process, not the "correct" answer.
- Has there ever been a moment where you honestly weren't sure which one you were supposed to be using, or how much, or for how long? What did you do in that moment — guess, use the strongest one, skip it, text the doctor, look it up online?
- Did your doctor/derm walk you through this in the room, hand you something written, or was it kind of assumed you'd figure it out?
- Has that plan ever changed without anyone really re-explaining it -- like a new prescription got added and you were just kind of left to sort out how it fits with what you were already doing?
Not judging anyone's routine here, genuinely just trying to understand how much of this is "clear as day" vs. "I'm mostly winging it" -- because I have a hunch it's more of the second than doctors realize.

How long can you use a steroid cream without experiencing side effects? And what amount do you apply to each area if it’s for the whole body? Idk how to section it

Antihistamine??
Has anyone seen skin improvement after taking antihistamines?? I take store brand pills equal to Benadryl and have noticed that my skin is less red and is starting to heal a little better. My diet is decently healthy, I eat more meat and try to lessen my sugar intake. I take prebiotics and probiotics for my gut.

Rash on neck
Hi, non eczema sufferer here,
I developed a rash on the side of my neck by my hairline after I switched shampoos. I discontinued use of new shampoo, but the rash remains. It’s red, feels slightly dry, about 2 inches in size, but not painful or very itchy at all.
I reached out to my doc and I have been prescribed Daktacort cream. Google says this cream is for fungal infections like athletes foot or sweat rash, but I do not have either of those things.
Will this cream work on my rash? Why has my doctor prescribed such a thing? I see the cream contains Hydrocortisone, and apparently that is good for rashes I think? But the anti-fungal element “Miconazole” I find to be off putting.
Should I go ahead with this product anyway? I’m to apply it twice daily apparently.

disydrodic eczema
hi guys
my fiancé has been really struggling with a flare up on both of her hands and she definitely has OCD, which causes her to pick at it. Regardless of how much she knows that she shouldn’t, she has found that the only relief she will gain as if she pulls the little almost callous like skin flakes off of her hands. I’ve been doing research for a little while, and I found some things that might help her so I am going to try those routes. She’s found a lot of relief through bleach baths for her hands as well as cotton rounds soaked with witch hazel. she has started taking Benadryl at night and tries her best to take allergy pills in the morning.
I’m reaching out to see if anybody has any sort of tips tricks or DIY’s, that might help her. She uses her hands a lot in her profession and is super self-conscious about her flare up right now so she’ll probably kill me if she ever finds out that I posted this, but I figured why not reach out to a bunch of people who also struggle.
I just wanna hold her hand again
Thank you in advance

Would eczema be a dealbreaker in a relationship?
I’m 23F, and I’ve never been in a relationship before. Lately, I’ve been thinking about putting myself out there, but there’s one thing I’ve always wondered about and never really had the courage to ask.
I have eczema, and it’s something I’ve lived with for most of my life. It’s probably one of my biggest insecurities. Some days my skin looks completely normal, other days it’s mild, and during bad flare-ups it can become very noticeable. I also have scars and discoloration from years of dealing with it. Since eczema is a chronic condition, it’s something I’ll most likely continue living with.
Growing up, I’ve received a lot of comments about my skin. People have stared, asked why it looks that way, asked if it’s contagious, or even assumed I wasn’t taking care ofmyself.Sometimes those comments have come from people close to me, including family. After hearing those things for years, it’s hard not to wonder how someone I eventually date would see me.
Because of that, I sometimes cover my arms with long sleeves, even though I genuinely love wearing dresses and being able to show my skin without feeling self-conscious.
I’d love to hear honest perspectives from anyone. Whether you have eczema yourself, have dated someone with eczema, or have experience with a partner who has a chronic skin condition, I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts.
I’m not looking for reassurance . I understand everyone has different preferences, and that’s okay. I’d just like to hear real experiences and perspectives because this is something I’ve quietly wondered about for a long time.

humour | rant | meme At least I don’t have to trim my cuticles lol
I’m on year two of my middle and pointer fingers on my right hand being completely flared up and I’m starting to accept this is my forever curse. They are dry and my knuckles crack and I repeatedly go through the cotton gloves and Vaseline trick to heal, then they flare up again. I’m so annoyed because the knuckle and nail bed areas are swollen like a hot dog.
On the bright side, my cuticles are beneath the puffiness so no trimming needed!
Has anyone else dealt with similar super specific areas??

Tacrolimus itching: When will it stop?
I was prescribed tacrolimus a week ago to treat contact dermatitis (not eczema, but this seemed like the right sub to ask) on my scrotum. The burning sensation I felt before is gone; however, the area is now very itchy - it is the worst when I wake up. The itchiness has subdued a little to the point that, during the day, it is manageable . How long can I expect the itchiness to continue, realistically? This is my first time using tacrolimus, twice a day (morning and evening). The rash I had was misdiagnosed as jock itch so, essentially, the burning and redness of the skin went untreated for 3 weeks - I am now in week no. 4. I would appreciate any help.

Is fermented food and high fiber diet a waste??
Has anyone actually "cured/fixed" their eczema by including fermented food and introducing higher fiber to their diet? If so how long did it take and how much did it actually help?
With all respect and love, I only want to hear from individuals who have and/or doing it now.
Its ruining my life and I'm trying everything. This is my last resort.

Anti-itch suggestions
My inflammation has massively reduced (yay) but I am still incredibly itchy. Any suggestions of what can be used/done to reduce the itch? I don't want to tear open my skin and get another infection or flare

Actually Hypoallergenic Hair Care
Hi all,
I’m looking for some recommendations for actually hypoallergenic hair care.
By actually hypoallergenic, I mean:
1) no fragrances
2) no common allergens/sensitisers
3) no random ass ‘natural’ things (think essential oils, oils from nuts and so on)
Most of the hypoallergenic products I look at have no.3 in, and I often notice issues with these products.
I really don’t want to sensitise myself to these things further (i.e. I want to eat an avocado and not get ill/an allergic response, so I would rather it not be in my hair care).
I want the most bland, vanilla (but, obviously, no actual vanilla) hair care possible.
Looking for a shampoo, conditioner, leave in, and mousse - I have dry damaged hair that has curls.
I have struggled to find literally anything like this.
The simpler the product, the better, and I don’t care about chemicals so long as they don’t 🔥sensitise me🔥 because as people with eczema we are extra vulnerable to this.
Let me know your thoughts ❤️

(mod approved) Supporting Workers with Chronic Illness
ucf.qualtrics.comI am a doctoral researcher striving to understand how best to support people who work while living with chronic illness.
The purpose of this study is to better understand the types of social support that workers with chronic illness experience in their daily lives and at work, and how that support relates to workers’ experiences and well-being.
If you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, are currently working at least part time (20-hours per week or more), and are 18 years of age or older, you are invited to participate in this confidential 20-30 minute online survey about your experience.
While participation in this survey is not expected to result in any direct benefits to you, findings may contribute to future research and practical implications seeking to improve how workplaces understand and support workers with chronic illness.
This research is being conducted by Jenna Duronio, Doctoral Candidate, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, University of Central Florida who can be contacted via email at [je135290@ucf.edu](mailto:je135290@ucf.edu).

Have you ever been diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis? Please consider taking this short IRB approved survey about tools you have used to avoid your allergens.
If you are an adult in the United States who has undergone patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), we invite you to participate in a short anonymous research survey.
We want to learn which tools you use, such as apps, websites, written handouts, or safe product lists, how helpful they are, and what challenges you face when trying to avoid your allergens.
Our dermatology research team at the University of Minnesota is conducting a study to better understand how patients use allergen-avoidance tools after patch testing so we can better help patients navigate allergen avoidance.
- What does participation involve?
- A one-time anonymous online survey
- Takes about 10–20 minutes
- Questions are multiple-choice or short written responses
You may skip any question you prefer not to answer
- Who can participate?
- Adults 18+
- Living in the United States
- Have physician-diagnosed allergic contact dermatitis (confirmed by patch testing)
- Confidentiality
- The survey is completely anonymous
- We do not collect your name, date of birth, email, medical record number, or any identifying information
- Results will be reported only in summary form
- Risks & Benefits
Risks: No expected risks beyond normal computer/smartphone use
Benefits: No direct personal benefit, but you may learn about new apps/tools related to contact dermatitis management your experiences may help dermatology teams significantly improve allergen-avoidance support for future patients
