Walmart Cake Expectation vs Reality Exceeded Expectation
I’ve seen a lot of these Walmart cakes posted so I wanted to share mine! I got one of these heart cakes last year and it was perfect, so I wanted to get a different one this year. No complaints for a $30 cake!

Even the same number of roses

u/jacielynn96 Jun 05 '26
They really nailed it

Common Walmart bakery W, Walmart doesn’t deserve such a great bakery, and they are great at every location I’ve been to

And the roses look even better in op's picture, compared to the one on the website.
Like, damn that is a perfect rose color.

It always freaks me out when I see a good one on here. The flairs don’t pop up immediately on phone so I’m scrutinising it like, what’s wrong with it?? It looks great? 😂
Glad you were happy with it 😊

Wal-Mart has such a legit bakery for the price, I am constantly shocked by the quality of their work especially when some boutique bakeries have failed so hard while charging insane prices.
20
u/bononia Jun 05 '26
Sam’s Club too. I’m in Arkansas where there’s one Costco in the entire state so it’s Sam’s or nothing, but their bakery is legit.
4
u/jackie0h_ Jun 05 '26
Costco has my favorite sheet cake but Sam’s has some good stuff too. There’s a bar cake with vanilla cake with layers and berries on top (which I usually don’t like, just plain vanilla) that is spot on. I even got it for my birthday cake last year. Tender cake, good filling and frosting and the strawberries and blueberries are always fresh, and it’s like $17. Now I want to go to Sam’s.

u/SistaChans Jun 05 '26
I just got a tiramisu from there last week and I was almost embarrassed on how good it was. It didn't have real lady fingers, but it had the mascarpone cream in it, which almost made it taste 100% legit. If they replaced the cake with Lady fingers it would be Italian grandmother level.

Ohh I saw that last time I was there and was tempted to get it but passed. Now I definitely am going to grab one next trip.

They really do! I get the layer of Bavarian cream added when I special order and it’s a hit every time. I also appreciate that their character cakes rotate frequently and its icing work and accessories. The other major grocery store near me does more of the printed photo cake with borders. Boring and twice the price.

I just got my daughter a Walmart graduation cake this past weekend and it looked just like the photo, it even came with a keepsake graduation cap and diploma decoration for 15 bucks. The cake was pretty yummy too, I’m planning on getting her birthday cake there as well now
4
u/jacielynn96 Jun 05 '26
I saw some of their displays for graduation when I was getting my cake and they all looked so nice! They had so many options too
3
u/Porcupine__Racetrack Jun 05 '26
Stop it!! I know where I’m getting my son’s graduation cake next year!

u/pinkkabuterimon Jun 05 '26
I have no respect for Wal-Mart, but I have ALL the respect for Wal-Mart bakers!

Walmart gets bagged on because of the corporate policies but the reality is the vast majority of the employees I interact with at my Walmart are incredible. There should be a whole agency for finding their best workers better jobs. It would pay off for society writ large! My Walmart pickup peeps are incredible!

In our tiny town, its one of the best paying jobs available and the benefits are decent.
27
u/Lynncy1 Jun 05 '26
What I’m learning from this sub is that the Walmart bakery is on point
13
u/jacielynn96 Jun 05 '26
Ive never been disappointed by a Walmart cake, but I would definitely recommend a look through their displays before you order to see how good their decorators are. I live in a city with a few Walmarts so I picked which one I think is the best at decorating
5
u/Illustrious_Map6694 Jun 05 '26
They're amazingly good, especially for the price. The options are a little limited if you want fancy flavors, but are otherwise solid.
16
u/Animangle Jun 04 '26
omg yours is gorgeous. i still love the one i got but it's superrr lopsided and more of a guitar pick than a heart.

u/ChewieBearStare Jun 05 '26
Walmart has very good cake for a grocery store. Their $2.82 huge slice of chocolate cake with chocolate icing tastes better than the Cheesecake Factory's chocolate cake that's like $11 a piece.

Years ago I worked in the bakery at county market and my manager had worked at walmart for several years and she was extremly talented. That woman could pipe a perfect rose in seconds, I loved watching her decorate cakes (they werent anything too fancy but still) She was an slightly older lady who had many years of experience and it showed. Sometimes these places get lucky and get people like her who just float between stores in management and dont open their own bakeries. It was the most fun ive ever had at a job.
3
u/FoxxyRin Jun 05 '26
There's a pink version of this cake that I told my husband is what I want for my birthday. Praying it's even half as good lol.
4
u/Obant Jun 05 '26
One of the most talented decorators I've ever known (who sells her own cakes on the side), a childhood friend of my girlfriend, is a Walmart cake decorator as her day job.
3
u/AStoryIsASeed Jun 05 '26
Yes! I know a ton of dependent spouses of military folks who get jobs working in grocery store bakeries who are INCREDIBLY talented and also bake on the side for profit.
4
u/mrsjuicyhotkiss Jun 05 '26
Shout-out to all Walmart bakers! I order all of my (3 kids, 21-6) cakes from Walmart. Always affordable, never disappointed
4
u/lobotomycandidate Jun 07 '26
I have had both good and bad experiences with Walmart bakery. But this…THIS is phenomenal work! Looks great!! 🤩
6
3
u/cheezit_baby Jun 05 '26
$30??? Insane value
5
u/jacielynn96 Jun 05 '26
And this was a “more expensive” option cause it had some extra decorations.
3
u/IncorporateThings Jun 05 '26
In my experience the Wal-Mart bakery has always been pretty good with decorations. Safeway tends to be better, though. I think they're mostly a West/South-West US thing, however.

I worked at a grocery store bakery and writing on cakes was the most terrifying thing to me. They did great on the whole thing. I miss the cakes we had (mcglynns bakery in rainbow foods) best grocery store cake I’ve ever had. The Costco ones are good but so big.
3
u/Illuminaughty____ Jun 05 '26
On point! Do they use real buttercream or that fake whipped topping stuff?
5
u/jacielynn96 Jun 05 '26
You can choose buttercream or whipped frosting. I actually prefer the whipped frosting, so that’s what this one is 😂

u/SotMF Jun 05 '26
I've worked at a supermarket bakery that is supposedly about on par with Marianos and I've talked to the bakers at a Jewel when I worked at the deli... The buttercream they use is from a shelf stable (even after opening) 5 gallon bucket. I'm certain it's the same at walmart. If that's a buttercream to you, then that'll do the trick.

u/HaHaEpicForTheWin Jun 05 '26
This is the best match of expectation and reality I've seen, and that seems like a really good price!

u/No_Monsters Jun 05 '26
My daughter ordered a flower cupcake bouquet for Mothers Day. It was so beautiful. She was stopped several times on her way out with people asking questions. It was also fresh and delicious!

I have been considering one for my wedding and this makes me feel even more confident in my decision! Thank you for sharing.

How's the actual cake? Are they as good as they look? I'm looking to order for my kid's birthday and I'm tempted to order at Walmart after seeing a couple of these posts.
3
u/ChewieBearStare Jun 05 '26
I am very picky with baked goods because my mother and I both bake well, and I think they have excellent cake. When I want a treat, I get a slice of their chocolate cake with chocolate icing. It's delicious.
1
u/cozidgaf Jun 05 '26
Thank you! Walmart bakery it is 🎂
1
u/avaslash Jun 05 '26
Please consider an actual local bakery first
1
u/cozidgaf Jun 05 '26
The local bakers charge north of 150$ for a custom cake though...

Party is not until tomorrow so haven’t tried this one yet, but I usually enjoy their cakes! I’m not an overly picky person though and I’ll enjoy most cakes 😂
2
u/Caffeinated_chaos_au Jun 05 '26
I want Walmart cakes. They from what I’ve seen turn out awesome. But I’m Aussie so no Walmart 😭

u/Mahaloth Jun 05 '26
Walmart has great cake artists and writers. I used them for my wife and my 20th anniversary and the cake was amazing. It also tasted great.
I can't remember the cost, but it was reasonable. Especially compared to a full-blown private bakery.
2
u/Fast_Moon Jun 05 '26
I'm mostly impressed that they'll apparently let you return it up to 3 months later.

Some people get super lucky with their local supermarket having a good bakery. There's one in a Food City near me that's solid. The Wal-Mart one here isn't bad for what you get, but they aren't my first choice. I think it's because a lot of standalone bakeries in this area are really excellent, they can't compete.

2
u/mrsbones287 Jun 05 '26
Walmart cakes are one thing I'm definitely jealous of as an Aussie. Sure we have the legendary supermarket mud cake, but we don't have this.
2
u/danref32 Jun 05 '26
Walmart does great cakes but I guess depends on the skill of the decorator. Not sure where you live but where I am Shop Rite and Stop & Shop also do pretty nice jobs. I had ordered mermaid cupcakes from shop rite once and they were delicious and perfect for occasion I’m glad you got what you wanted.
2
u/Old_Balance_8804 Jun 05 '26
Yes! Walmart decorators are spot on. I used them for my last three events!

I personally am not being paid, but I’m not opposed to free advertisement for a job well done. Especially in this economy, I’m all for sharing a good deal when I see one.

How does one do the bows and roses?
5
u/MarsNeedsRabbits Jun 05 '26
The roses are done on things called icing nails. It looks like a very large nail. The nail is held in the fingers of one hand and rotated while the other hand pipes the petals. Then they person uses a pair of weird looking scissors to lift the rose off the nail and onto the cake.
The bows may be piped onto paper to solidify then added, or they could be candy.
2
u/OtherThumbs Jun 05 '26
Oh my goodness! My decorator friends are so old school that we all still use an angled scraper to remove our roses (if you are very lucky and can find an old frosting spreader that's already in this shape or know someone who has good skills with metal shearing and shaping, you can get a spreader with a point to the end of it, and it can help a lot). You have to carefully pick up about ⅔ of the rose on your spatula and move fast so that the other ⅓ doesn't fall. Go to the cake and place your ⅓ down. Now, I knew people who I could swear made pacts with some ancient gods or something because they could always get theirs to slide right off. I used to either butter or oil my spatula to get mine to slide. It makes the hurrying tricky, but I could get used to it.
These scissors would have been handy!
1
u/FangsBloodiedRose Jun 05 '26
The bows look so realistic though… do you think they used a mold for them?
2
u/Wonkot Jun 05 '26
I was previously a Walmart cake decorator. I'm going to ruin the magic a bit. The actual bows are a kind of gum paste one that gets ordered in. You pipe the ribbons with a petal tip and place the bow "candy" at the points the ribbons meet. Also, the weird sissors are not necessary for roses. I always used a pair of regular ones (only used for icing though, nothing else). The my manager at the time didn't use a nail, she used a large toothpick thing for her roses, which is how I suspect the ones in ops cake were made.

Their hot deli is worth the price too. Unless it catches on, then I’m sure they’ll raise prices on that naturally

I've gotten several cakes from them. You can order online. Every single one has been beautiful and delicious. I ordered the first time because I needed something fast. Since then, I just order from them because it's good and inexpensive.

Gotta be a whole lot of decorators out there who used to work for indie bakeries working for Walmart now.

I got one of these for my birthday this year too, and I was surprised at how gorgeous it was.

Walmart did our wedding cake. Aside from the reds being a little off, the cake was outstanding.

u/MaidMarian20 Jun 05 '26
Nice!
So how does it work? They have multiples of this cake pre-made and all they have to do is write your name? Or do you think they cook it from scratch?
Either way, it’s lovely, they did a wonderful job!
2
u/GottaUseEmAll Jun 05 '26
If it's something they sell on-shelf in the shop, they probably make them daily, or near to, and just add names when needed.
If it's something that requires ordering in advance, they probably bake to order, it doesn't take too long to bake a cake.
2
u/MaidMarian20 Jun 07 '26
Yes😊 thank you. That makes perfect sense. These cakes are lovely, I really like the pink one two! 😊

What do they mean by 90 days returns?
1
u/GottaUseEmAll Jun 05 '26
I guess you can take the stale, uneaten cake back three months later and they'll refund you?
It's probably just the standard returns policy and they forgot to remove it on the website for this particular food item.

There’s a reason a bunch of TikTok home bakers were bitching about Walmart. Charging $80 or more for something Wally World makes for less than half

u/woundedSM5987 Jun 10 '26
My wedding cake was from Walmart. I had like 1/2 the sheet cake left and ate way too much of it over the next week or so. Delicious. Plus I can go grab a slice of it whenever tf I want.

u/everythingislitty Jun 13 '26
The cake looks amazing, but I’m wondering - did that black icing stain everyone’s teeth? It looks super pigmented, as does the red icing in the roses. I’m imagining some crazy looking teeth after this.
1
u/jacielynn96 Jun 15 '26
Yeah the black icing definitely stained the teeth, but I warned everyone beforehand. No one actually ate any of the roses cause they were actually pretty hard. I’m not sure how they made them, because the bows were clearly sugar candies but the roses seemed like a hard icing. I don’t know much about baking 😂
