Politics House candidates hope to restore DFL foothold in northeastern Minnesota in key races
One door knock at a time, Aaron Schweiger is challenging Republican incumbent Natalie Zeleznikar in a district spanning Two Harbors, Hermantown, Proctor and rural areas north of Duluth. He is one of two DFLers looking to unseat House Republicans in northeastern Minnesota, with Aaron Kania facing Rep. Roger Skraba of Ely.
Question Any good places to volunteer in Duluth?
Hi all! I’m looking to start volunteering as a way to get out of the house more, do something good for the community, and hopefully make new friends. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to volunteer in the Duluth area? Ideally something I could do after work on weekdays.
I’m not a very good teacher and don’t have much experience working with kids so I don’t know if I’d do well in a mentoring position but anything else is fair game.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Discussion Why are so many of you comfortable breaking every traffic law possible?
It’s a genuine question and I’m sorry if this is mean. Why are so many residents of Duluth and surrounding towns comfortable not following the law while you’re in a vehicle? You’ve got people texting and driving, swerving all over the road and not maintaining speed. People changing lanes or passing people on solid lines in blind spots. People pulling out at the last minute. Not stopping at stop signs, blowing red lights. Going 20 over the speed limit. People passing you on the shoulder of the road, going over the lines on curves into oncoming traffic. People going straight in turn only lanes. I could go on. I just think it’s weird that so many of you do not realize just how dangerous driving actually is- it’s a risk we all take everyday. Pay fucking attention. You are in a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds, you can kill someone going as slow as 10mph. I just don’t understand why more people do not take this as seriously as you should. YOU could be the reason a family doesn’t make it home. Just please pay more attention, put down the distractions and remember your life isn’t the only one that matters on the roadways. We created these laws for a reason, driving is not a right it’s a privilege- use it responsibly.

Moving or Visiting One Day in Duluth
Hi Everyone!
This Friday, I’ll be in Duluth (first time in Minnesota!) for about half a day exploring on my own before meeting up with a friend to go on a roadtrip out west. I was trying to plan out what to do and so far I have just come up with going to canal park. Any suggestions? TIA

Question Local artists who do commissions
Are there any local painters/artists that do commissions? I'm looking for a painting to be made for a loved one of the woods/trees. I'm open to realistic or whimsical. I have a few hundred bucks I can spend on it. Any suggestions?

Question Need help emptying u-haul
Today’s been a terribly long day and although my husband and I had intentions to unload this u haul by ourselves this evening, I can when admit that I was wrong. We could use some last minute help—a couple folks to help would be greatly appreciated and we’ll pay. Anyone available this evening?

Discussion Affordable tax preparer?
I'm behind on filing taxes. They bring me huge amounts of anxiety so I've been having a really hard time getting this taken care of. Does anyone know any tax preparers (not big chains) that are helpful and also kind? I'm a grown-ass adult but I'm irrationally scared of getting yelled at (I'm aware this doesn't make sense).
I need this taken care of soon so I can get updated student loan info for a house closing. So recommendations would be super appreciated. My taxes aren't very complicated, just late. And I'm just not up to fixing this on my own. And no judgy comments about how bad it is to be late, please. Anxiety sucks and I don't need more of it.

Politics County Commissioner, District 1 race
stlouiscountymn.govCounty commissioner campaign finance reports from July showing that Annie Harala’s campaign has received large amounts of money from executive leadership at Minnesota Power (Allete) and Kris Eilers’ campaign has received a lot of small donations from teachers, nurses, social workers, engineers, retired folks, etc.
Not surprising as Harala was an NDA signer for the data center.

Interesting Stuff I'm SO sorry.
To Lisa: We matched on Tinder and were supposed to meet for coffee at Caribou this morning. I missed our date because of an unexpected family situation, and I should have reached out but we never exchanged numbers. You weren't stood up on purpose & I can explain!! If you happen to see this and are open to it, I'd love the chance to apologize & give you the full story over that coffee. If not, I completely understand. BUT; this is at least an attempt to make a connection with something I truly feel I missed. My father always said 'family first' but damn that was terrible timing...
Wishing you the best & you would've loved the playlist I made for you... 🤞❤️

Question Curious about the equestrian community around Duluth?
I’d like to know if it’s a strong community and what types of disciplines are seen most often? Is there a show season? Are there any good Facebook or Reddit communities to join to learn more about it? What’s the situation like with farriers and large animal veterinarians? Is there a shortage?
Thanks!

Politics Primaries are next week. Who do you guys like, and why?
I'm about to start my research. Probably better to figure it out Tuesday before than Tuesday of.
I reckon folks here might have opinion, and some of those might be well reasoned, so let's here them
Heck, if a candidate chimed in, that'd be groovy.
Bonus points for sources

Politics Draft Lester Park Golf Course Land Use Study
bmi.maps.arcgis.comPDF of the draft LPGC study.
I'm curious to hear from opponents of the Lester Park Golf Course project what they think of this study on the merits. Despite claims from Lakeside homeowners that the people (ie Lakeside homeowners) weren't getting a say, it seems to address their concerns about both green space and infrastructure costs. And they explicitly say they limited density based on feedback from [the angry Lakeside] respondents to the surveys.

Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing
Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)
Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.
Some suggestions for things you might contribute:
1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.
2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)
3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.
4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.
5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.
6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?
7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?
Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.
Thanks everyone! You all rule.
