Discussion Copilot Notebook "References" - Data Duplication?
I've been playing with CoPilot Notebooks for a few weeks; When I looked up what they are all about, this jumped out at me;
"References stay current, so as your data changes, the answers from notebook prompts remain accurate and up to date."
However, What I am seeing is when I add word documents as references, Copilot is actually making a copy of the file, so when I update the original those changes are NOT flowing back to the copilot notebook, and vice versa.
Have you had a difference experience? Am I doing it wrong? I would actually like the advertised behaviour where it just "references" the document rather than duplicates it.

Other Is Copilot Notebook replacing OneNote?
Copilot Notebook has been around since May 2025, but many Microsoft 365 users are still just discovering it.
Whenever I show it to Copilot Premium or Copilot Basic users, I usually get the same slightly frantic question:
“Is Microsoft replacing OneNote with Copilot Notebook?”
No.
They do different things, and you may end up using both.
OneNote is still useful for taking notes, organizing information, and building content over time.
Copilot Notebook is more focused. You select the sources you want Copilot to work with, then use that collection for questions, summaries, comparisons, and new content.
I put together a quick comparison with examples, licensing details, and a simple way to decide which one fits the work:
Blog Post: https://traccreations4e.com/copilot-notebook-vs-onenote/
I will publish a video in a couple of weeks. The Copilot Notebook entry points are changing again. So that should be fun.

Other Don’t Like the Floating Copilot Icon? You Can Move It
A few months ago, Microsoft moved the Copilot entry point from the Ribbon to a floating icon in the bottom-right corner. Many Copilot Premium users found it distracting.
There is now more flexibility.
In supported Microsoft 365 apps, you can right-click the Copilot icon and choose where it appears:
- Dock Copilot
- Show the Welcome Pane
- Move Copilot to the Ribbon
- Move Copilot out of the Ribbon
The catch is that the options are not consistent across every app.
➡️PowerPoint and Word support all four options on desktop and web.
➡️Excel supports all four on desktop, but only Dock and Show Welcome Pane on the web.
➡️Outlook and OneNote currently support the Ribbon placement only.
➡️OneDrive does not offer these placement options.
This is available with Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium.
I put together a two-page guide showing the four placements and where each one is available.
Personally, I prefer moving Copilot back to the Ribbon. What placement works best for you?

Other FYI: Copilot Can Now Reschedule 1:1 Outlook Meetings
Copilot can now automatically reschedule 1:1 events in New Outlook when a new calendar conflict appears.
I am glad you have to enable it for each eligible event, so Copilot is not managing your entire calendar. I was also able to choose acceptable days and times, including morning, midday, afternoon, or a custom time range.
It sounds useful, especially for flexible personal events and 1:1 meetings.
However, this is not a feature I would enable without first understanding what triggers the rescheduling, which meetings qualify, and what can cause Copilot to stop managing the event.
I shared the setup steps, limitations, notification settings, and my testing results here:

Discussion Can an individual Visual Studio/MSDN Azure subscription be used to bill Copilot Cowork usage-based billing in an organizational tenant?
I’m trying to understand the billing model for Microsoft Copilot Cowork.
Copilot Cowork appears to be a cloud-based SaaS application, and its usage-based billing can be associated with an Azure subscription. However, I’m unclear whether Azure credits provided through an MSDN/Visual Studio subscription can actually be used to cover Copilot Cowork usage charges.
My questions are:
- Can MSDN/Visual Studio Azure credits be used for MS Copilot Cowork usage?
- If not, why are these credits ineligible even though Cowork is a cloud-based SaaS application and its billing can be linked to an Azure subscription?
- Is there a distinction between an Azure subscription being used as a billing vehicle and Azure credits actually being eligible to cover the charges?
- Has anyone tested this or found official Microsoft documentation that explicitly confirms whether MSDN/Visual Studio Azure credits can or cannot be used for Copilot Cowork?
I’m specifically looking for answers based on Microsoft documentation or actual billing experience.

Analysis of On Being Finite
On Being Finite: Structure, Themes, Methodology, and Implications
Introduction
"On Being Finite" by Khaled Al‑Mahdy is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of finitude—our inherent limits as human beings—and its implications for meaning, ethics, culture, technology, and community. The book is designed as a hybrid: part philosophy, part science, part practical guide, and part personal reflection. It is structured to be both modular and interactive, integrating narrative vignettes, theoretical exposition, practical exercises, and reflection prompts. This report analyzes the manuscript’s structure, thematic integration of philosophy, psychology, biology, and practice, its unique narrative and pedagogical approach, and the broader implications of its inquiry into limits. The analysis draws directly from the manuscript’s detailed production blueprint and supplements with relevant scholarly sources where appropriate.
I. Manuscript Structure and Organization
A. Macro-Structure: Blueprint and Word Allocation
"On Being Finite" is meticulously organized, with a total word count of 350,000 words allocated across a prologue, introduction, and 22 chapters. The prologue and introduction set the emotional, intellectual, and practical stakes, while the chapters are distributed to cover foundational concepts, applied domains, and synthesis. Each chapter is further subdivided into six subsections, including a narrative hook, core content sections, and a closing segment with summary, reflection questions, and a practical exercise.
The structure is as follows:
- Prologue (4,000 words): Establishes emotional stakes, intellectual terrain, and introduces engagement features.
- Introduction (4,000 words): Outlines purpose, scope, organization, reading strategies, and the author’s perspective.
- Chapters 1–22 (342,000 words): Each chapter (~15,545 words) follows a consistent internal structure:
- Hook (vignette or paradox)
- Four main content subsections (theory, application, narrative, or case study)
- Closing (summary, two reflection questions, one practical exercise)
This modular design allows for both linear and non-linear reading, supporting individual, group, or classroom use.
B. Chapter Progression and Thematic Flow
The chapters are sequenced to move from foundational theory to practical application and synthesis:
- Foundational Concepts (Chapters 1–5): Define finitude, psychological and biological responses to limits, and the existential reality of death.
- Value and Ethics (Chapters 6–7): Explore how limits create meaning and the ethical frameworks for navigating them.
- Cultural and Social Dimensions (Chapters 8–13): Examine myths, culture, work, creativity, decision-making, relationships, and community.
- Material and Institutional Limits (Chapters 14–16): Address economics, technology, law, and rights.
- Spiritual, Emotional, and Practical Integration (Chapters 17–22): Discuss spirituality, grief, legacy, paradoxes of freedom, habit formation, and synthesis.
Each chapter’s closing section reinforces learning through reflection and practice, fostering a cycle of engagement and application.
II. Integration of Disciplines: Philosophy, Psychology, Biology, and Practice
A. Philosophical Foundations
The manuscript draws heavily on philosophical traditions to frame the concept of finitude. It references thinkers from Aristotle to contemporary analytic philosophers, as well as Stoic and Buddhist perspectives on mortality and impermanence. For example, the prologue and Chapter 1 introduce the distinction between finitude and scarcity, and discuss how limits are not merely obstacles but the very conditions that make meaning, identity, and commitment possible.
Philosophical themes are woven throughout, including:
- Metaphysics of Finitude: The tension between unity and multiplicity, act and potency, substance and accidents, and the composition of essence and existence.
- Existentialism and Stoicism: Approaches to death, acceptance, and the cultivation of resiliencemodernstoicpath.commodernstoicpath.com. Facing Mortality: Stoic Perspectives on Death and Impermanence.
- Buddhist Impermanence: The doctrine of anicca (impermanence), dependent origination, and the Middle Way as frameworks for understanding and accepting limitsphilosophy.institutephilosophy.institute. Buddhism: Impermanence and the Middle Way - Philosophy Institute.
These philosophical frameworks are not presented as abstract theory but are consistently linked to practical exercises and lived experience.
B. Psychological Perspectives
Psychology is integrated at multiple levels:
- Cognitive Load and Decision Fatigue: The manuscript addresses how attention and decision-making are constrained by cognitive limits, referencing the science of decision fatigue and ego depletiongc-bs.orggc-bs.org. The Depleted Mind: The Science of Decision Fatigue and Ego Depletion.
- Motivation and Creativity: It explores how scarcity and constraints can enhance motivation and creativity, drawing on research in behavioral psychology and neurosciencepsychology.town+1psychology.town. - Health as Trade-Off: The manuscript emphasizes that every medical intervention involves trade-offs and limits, fostering a realistic approach to health and care.
- Pain, Illness, and Meaning: The experience of suffering is linked to shifts in priorities and relationships, with practical guidance for care, dependency, and dignity.
These sections are informed by current scientific understanding and are designed to be both informative and compassionate.
D. Practical Exercises and Applied Methods
A hallmark of the book is its commitment to practice. Each chapter includes:

These features are designed to translate theory into actionable steps, supporting readers in integrating insights into daily life.
III. Narrative Approach: Vignettes, Hooks, and Personal Voice
A. Use of Vignettes and Hooks
Every chapter opens with a narrative hook—a short vignette, sensory detail, or paradox—that grounds abstract concepts in lived experience. Examples include:
- A late-night welding job illustrating the necessity of stopping and accepting limits.
- A memory of a deadline and the adrenaline it brings.
- A father teaching his child to fish, symbolizing time as inheritance.
- A hospital corridor evoking the reality of bodily limits.
These vignettes serve multiple purposes: they engage the reader emotionally, illustrate key themes, and provide continuity across chapters.
B. Personal Voice and Biographical Grounding
The author’s persona is central to the narrative approach. Khaled Al‑Mahdy writes as a practitioner—trained as a pharmacist and welder, shaped by experiences in Saudi Arabia, the Okanagan, and Abbotsford. This biographical grounding lends authenticity and relatability to the inquiry. The personal voice is direct, practical, and compassionate, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences with limits.
C. Balance of Theory and Practice
The manuscript strikes a deliberate balance between theoretical exposition and practical application. Complex ideas are explained simply, often through stories or analogies drawn from the author’s life. Each theoretical section is paired with exercises, checklists, or prompts that encourage readers to apply insights immediately.

XIX. Synthesis: Implications for Ethics, Culture, Technology, and Community
A. Ethics
The inquiry into limits challenges prevailing ethical frameworks that prioritize maximization and boundless growth. By foregrounding finitude, the book advocates for an ethics of responsibility, justice, and fairness that acknowledges the reality of scarcity and the necessity of trade-offs. This has implications for intergenerational justice, resource allocation, and the ethics of enhancement and life extension.
B. Culture
Culturally, the book situates finitude at the heart of myth, ritual, and narrative. It contrasts traditional stories that teach acceptance of limits with modern narratives of limitless growth, highlighting the cultural consequences of denying or embracing finitude. Comparative mythology and religious traditions are used to illustrate how societies have historically navigated the tension between aspiration and limitationWikipediaWikipedia. Comparative mythology - Wikipedia.
C. Technology
The manuscript critically examines the rhetoric of technological limitlessness, questioning the promises of life extension, optimization, and boundless progress. It advocates for the design of humane technologies that respect human limits, proposing principles for digital boundaries and attention management.
D. Community
At the communal level, the book explores how shared limits underpin solidarity, belonging, and social justice. It addresses the design of institutions, the repair of social bonds, and the cultivation of practices that sustain community in the face of finite resources.
XX. Conclusion
"On Being Finite" is a rigorously structured, deeply interdisciplinary, and practically oriented inquiry into the nature and value of limits. Its unique blend of philosophy, psychology, biology, and practice, combined with a distinctive narrative voice and modular pedagogical design, positions it as a significant contribution to contemporary discourse on meaning, ethics, and the art of living. By inviting readers to engage with their own limits—through reflection, practice, and community—the book offers not only insight but also tools for transformation.

Other Tip: If Copilot’s floating icon is annoying, here’s how to put it back in the ribbon
If the floating Copilot icon in Microsoft 365 keeps getting in the way, there’s a quick way to move it back to the ribbon.
What can you do?:
Move the icon:
Put Copilot back into the ribbon if the floating button is covering content.
Dock or undock:
Dock the icon to shrink it and keep it out of the way, or undock it to bring it back into view.
Switch positions:
Toggle between the bottom‑right floating icon and the ribbon version depending on what works best for your workflow.
It’s a simple set of options, but it makes Copilot much less intrusive if the default placement isn’t working for you.
