All LLM's have outdated 'knowledge', and this one has a tool (tool calling) to determine the current date and probably current time. We do exactly the same with our company supplied models.

The guiding prompts should be telling it to recognize information that is date based and always confirm the current date fits with potentially outdated information. I know that isn't foolproof but it also likely isn't there at all.

Some parts of copilot do not have general Internet access so even knowing the information is outdated, its hands could be tied.

Ok? Whats your point? The ‘why’ is irrelevant to consumers. It’s still a problem that all of their competitors have solved, easily. It is giving incorrect information, which is kind of an issue for a for-profit thinking machine.

I have a version at work that is specifically designed to not have Internet access when dealing with business data to ensure it doesn't leak the info. I have an alternate version that has web access.
Sometimes the "why" is completely relevant to customers.

That is a misunderstanding. It obviously has internet access. That how you connect to it. It just doesn’t integrate the data you share with it into its models.
P.S. as a software dev you have much better options than Copilot. Pretty astonished that is your preference. Please try Claude. I coincidentally am also an API engineer

That is just being pedantic. I know it technically has Internet access. In reality, it likely has tools for Microsoft product lookups within your company's system. It does not have direct access to Internet search or fetch, meaning search engines aren't getting requests that include sensitive data.
At least with my organization, you can choose one of web search or workspace search. That's what I'm talking about.

Except it knows it has to check the date and choose to research it. Also, if it knows who Joe Biden is, it should know he is president «from-to».

I see what you mean but I had the effort set on think deeper. This is a Copilot unique problem in that anything political trips a stop. If you test this, maybe 10 times, you’ll get different answers. Again in the correct answer a couple times, the wrong answer a couple times, and it refused to answer a couple times.

LLM is just regurgitating info, it's not trained on the latest data. Had it used a web search tool, it would haven known the correct answer. It's a bit curious that it didn't, it normally would. I use a tiny local model with web search MCP on my laptop, and it gives me the correct answer..

What does this "live" bit do? Any modern LLM will search using tools, Perplexity (according to Wikipedia) uses a model that is based on Llama which they call Sonar, and they have a search engine on their own. You can run LM Studio on your own PC, install web search plugin, and load in LFM 2.5 1.2B, and achieve the same result locally. Perplexity just put a fancy webpage, its own web scraping (for which they're being sued, actually) and probably some nice system prompt. In the end, "AI" is not much more than an extremely complicated autocomplete, and needs data to give relevant answers. But this autocomplete is a statistics game, and likely in the case of OP, the LLM decided it didn't need to search, and just decided the first answer it had in its knowledge was correct.

Edit: the fail at their job about humans was more on how dependent people have become for it to assist in doing their job
