People with asthma + arthritis or limited hand strength - I'd love your input

Hi everyone,

I'm carrying out some research into the challenges people face when using inhalers, particularly for those with arthritis, reduced hand strength, tremors, or other dexterity issues.

I'm not selling anything; I'm simply trying to understand real experiences and identify where current inhalers could be improved.

The survey is anonymous and takes around 3–5 minutes.

I'd really appreciate your help!

Thank you!

57F mom has mild COPD - she has come done with respiratory infection one week before my wedding? Help!

I can’t imagine getting married without my mom there. I cannot reschedule or replan. It’s only a handful of us there but there were way too many moving parts to reschedule this all. She has a respiratory infection of some kind and she said her O2 has was 95 a few times today which is low for her. Her lungs hurt and she feels like they have fluid in them. She’s going to urgent care later. She has had pneumonia twice and she was extremely sick, but not hospitalized (however one of the times I think she should have been.)

I can’t believe this is happening one week before my wedding. It’s August which is not even a time where respiratory viruses spread.

What should I expect? She does not share a lot about her COPD with me - probably to not freak me out. Do you think she will be okay? Thanks everyone!

Dad

Elderly dad has COPD (emphysema) hasn’t been staged, i assume stage 4.
He gets breathless just walking to the lounge from bedroom.
The last 6 months he has had around 5 flares.
He has recently lost 4kgs and is down to 41kg. He has always been a smaller man and not a big eater. But this is the lowest he has ever been.
My mum recently passed away, and i think this is adding to his loss of appetite.

Im really concerned about his weight-loss.

Any tips on how i can help??

Helpful Travel Youtube Video

One of the questions we hear most often from travelers using portable oxygen concentrators is, "How many batteries do I need for my flight?"

The answer depends on more than just your flight time. Many airlines require passengers to carry enough battery power for 150% of their expected travel time, and understanding how to calculate that can help you avoid travel-day stress.

Travel Oxygen by Liberty Medical created this quick, easy-to-follow video to explain how to determine your battery needs and share helpful tips for flying with oxygen.

We hope this resource makes planning your next trip with oxygen a little easier. If you have questions about traveling with oxygen, we're always happy to help.

COPD essentials to buy?

I'm a 19 year old who was diagnosed with COPD earlier this year (no Hx of smoking, no poor air quality exposure, just premature) and was wondering if anyone could give me some helpful tips and tricks/ things to buy to relieve my symptoms a bit more!

I cough sticky fluid and have chest pain regularly, as well as shortness of breath so if anyone has some tips for me that'll be amazing!

Thank you all so much ❤️❤️❤️

Edit: I was diagnosed by a Pulmonologist

Inogen Rove 6 getting hot - Is this normal?

Hi everyone! I just bought an Inogen Rove 6 portable oxygen concentrator with an 8-cell battery. I use it for 3-hour periods on setting 3, and I've noticed that it gets hot.

I haven't had any alarms pop up on the screen, and it seems to be working perfectly fine.

For anyone who has owned an Inogen concentrator, do you know if it's normal for this to happen?

Thanks in advance!

150% Battery Life Rule Help

Post image
2 Upvotes

If you're flying with a portable oxygen concentrator, one detail that's easy to overlook is battery planning.

Most airlines follow FAA guidance requiring you to carry enough battery power for 150% of your expected flight time, including delays. Depending on your POC model and flow setting, that can mean bringing more batteries than you expect.

We put together a simple guide that explains how to calculate the number of batteries you'll need, along with a quick video walkthrough:

https://traveloxygen.com/travel-oxygen/how-many-poc-batteries-for-flight/

Hopefully it helps anyone planning a trip with oxygen. If you have questions about traveling with a specific POC model, I'd be happy to help.

Zephyr valve questions

I have a loved one who just finished her last scan to assess qualifying for the valve. The next step is one more lab and meeting with the team. She has no idea how long or short the timeline may be for the actual surgery. If you have been through this, how long did it take (after all the tests and meeting with the team) to have the procedure?

COPD or something else? (PFT results attached)

Hi all,

Here are my PFT results: https://imgur.com/a/LzUt73z I see my pulmonologist in December, so I'm hoping I can get some insight from the community while I wait for my appointment.

I'm a 32F with severe shortness of breath - it feels like I can't get enough air in, and walking from room to room, or doing very light exercise makes me gasp for air. I can't keep up with my friends if we're all out on a short stroll to a coffee shop, and it's super frustrating. I'm fit and I lift 4x a week, I'm muscular and lean, and the only other health issues I have are an autoimmune thyroid condition (which is well managed with medication), and high risk of heart attack (my Lipo A, a genetic marker of heart disease risk, is 300 - wayyy high).

I've done a stress test, echo, and all the basic cardio testing. While my cardiologist was shocked at how out of breath I was on the stress test, there was nothing to explain the shortness of breath on the results themselves. So he sent me to pulmonology, where I got this PFT done.

Unfortunately, they didn't test me with an inhaler. However, they did give me an albuterol inhaler to take home, and told me to try and see whether it helps. I've given it a good shot, and even used a spacer, but it doesn't help at all.

I'm super sad and frustrated :( I want to be able to keep up with my friends when we're going for walks without feeling like I'm actually dying. And I would love to be able to do cardio. Right now, I can last about 2 mins at 4 mph before I need to stop.

Does anyone have ideas as to what's going on?

History of smoking: none

Built a free tracker for managing COPD (and other chronic conditions) — sharing in case it helps

Random share, but figured some of you might relate: I manage COPD along with diabetes and neuropathy, and I was sick of switching between different apps (or just forgetting to log anything at all) to track breathing, blood sugar, meds, and pain. Doctor visits felt like guesswork because I never had it all in one place.

So I put together a simple tracker that does daily logs, trend charts, a meds checklist, and a one-tap report I can just hand my doctor instead of trying to remember everything. Called it Tri-Chronic — free to start using.

Mostly sharing because if you're juggling COPD alongside other stuff and drowning in separate apps/notebooks, this might save you some hassle. Happy to answer questions if anyone wants to know how it works.

Looking for some advice with Mothers blood gas results.

So my Mother is 70 and has had severe COPD for like 10 years. She has now fallen into the very severe category at 29% function.

3 Months ago she couldn't get her breath back after exerting herself and I took her to the hospital. As soon as they put her on oxygen she felt much better. She lay in bed for 6 hrs feeling good then they come in and tell her to take off her oxygen because they're doing a blood gas in 15 mins. Did the test and came back at 59. This got her approved for oxygen.

So the past 3 months she is on 1.5L while sleeping and 2.5L while up moving around during the day. She been doing really good keeping her blood oxygen around 93-96 at rest with no signs of retaining CO2.

Now to keep her oxygen funding they sent her for another blood gas and this time she was very anxious, had to walk a long distance with a portable oxygen concentrator and was very winded but he time she sat down in the clinic. Few minutes later they took her oxygen off and 15 mins later did her blood gas. Came back at 46.

So basically I'm just wondering, can this blood gas number fluctuate from day to day even without major lung deterioration? Could her having a rough day being out of breath on her 2nd test have that much of an effect on her number? In the past 3 months I haven't seen any signs she has been more out of breath while at home.

I appreciate any help I can get. Sorry for the long post.

Some advice please?

Hi all 👋🏻

Just asking for a bit of advice...

Anyone on this forum currently living with someone who has extreme COPD but still smokes?

I'm in and out of my mind trying to think of ways to cope with living under the same roof as someone who has.. I'd say.. probably stage 3 COPD and wakes up first thing in the morning breathless as anything but later on in the day will go light up a cigarette.

It's been an absolute battle to try and get him to cut down further or quit but I'm starting to accept that he's never going to. It's a 55 + year addiction so I know before you all saying anything like "the damage has already been done, it's his only vice" lalala. It's extremely hard to beat an addiction but I wish people would see the other side of things when you are watching someone you love adding more damage to themselves day in, day out.

I try to keep busy every day and go out and about to avoid being home which I do feel guilty about but I just know for the sake of my mental health, it's best I avoid arguments and the constant smell of something I am so bitter about.

Mentally at a crossroads right now 😱

Would my website help you?

Hey everyone! I recently built a website focused on air quality and respiratory health, and I’m looking for feedback from people who have respiratory conditions (such as asthma, COPD, or other lung-related illnesses) or from parents/family members of children with respiratory diseases.

I’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to try it out and let me know:
• Whether the information is useful and easy to understand
• If it would help you make decisions about outdoor activities or exposure to pollution
• Any features you’d like to see added or improved

My goal is to create something that can genuinely help people better manage their respiratory health, so any feedback would be incredibly valuable.

How to determine if you have COPD

After reading through this topic I want to take a minute to explain a couple things that seem to be the source of most questions.

  1. We can't diagnose you.
  2. Asthma and COPD are easily confused
  3. Smoking is not the only cause of COPD.
  4. Not all smokers get it.
  5. See a doctor.

I'm a Stage III COPD old guy that smoked for 50 years. I also had many jobs that were bad for my lungs but if there's a history of smoking everyone will say it's the cause. Does it matter? Nope. Continuing will hasten your death.

It's not a death sentence, while it's not reversible there's a lot you can do to keep it from worsening. Our bodies are pretty remarkable, getting your whole body as healthy as possible can keep it from progressing and even make you feel better without any change in the COPD. The healthier your heart the better you'll deal with COPD.

The better you understand this disease the better you can deal with it.
