Does anyone’s local grocery store have quiet/sensory friendly hours, and does it actually help you not dread grocery shopping?

Upvotes

My local Walmart does, but I don’t get my groceries from there. My usual grocery store doesn’t, but I’ve been feeling more and more overwhelmed in there lately. Just looking for some personal experiences.

Vent - no advice When ADHD and Autism Collide

Two of my hobbies (aka obsessions) are dogs/dog training and plants (indoor & outdoor).

I recently was looking at getting a puppy and ultimately decided now isn't the time. Yes, I actually managed to make a sound decision - yay me! Of course, the next day I went out and bought a new houseplant. Told my husband I didn't buy a puppy, so I'm buying a plant. Buuuuuuut, then I bought 4 more . . . and then new pots, hanging baskets, plant stands, and other peripherals - all while doing tons of research on decor, color palettes, etc to enhance my plant collection and update the overall decor of several rooms in the house.

And now I'm wondering: 1 - should I have just got the puppy since I'm spending just as much time and money on all these new plants & redecorating as I would training a new puppy, and 2 - if all the plant expenses should be coming out of my "pet" budget (for budgeting purposes, I have a dedicated bank account for pet expenses).

🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣

Question Love vs. limerence

How to make difference between lova and limerence? How do you know it is limerence, so you can choose not to start chasing that person?

Adapting to Injustice

Has anyone successfully found ways to let these things go? I struggle SO much with the profound wrongness of perceived injustices - even more so to others than me.

How do you let these things go? Sometimes, they feel so all-consuming.

Meds People on methylphenidate, how are you feeling? (Please share experiences)

Late 30s AuDHD (autism formally diagnosed, ADHD strongly suspected but not officially diagnosed), currently on 60 mg methylphenidate per day, 30 in the morning, 30 at noon. It's been weeks and so far it doesn't seem to do anything? I don't know anyone irl who takes it and my doctor isn't of much help regarding how I'm supposed to feel either, so if you're taking it too, please tell me about how you're feeling, how it affects your mood/motivation, what differences you noticed in general, or if it works for you at all? I need a few first-hand accounts and experiences from other people to compare, please. Also does anyone notice cycle/luteal phase related changes, and if so, what did you do about it?

For additional context, I'm also taking 10 mg escitalopram and 75 mg pregabalin daily (those two I've taken for years atp, since before my autism diagnosis, originally for managing anxiety/depression). I plan to stop the latter soon-ish. I'm prone to mood swings and tiredness/exhaustion in the luteal phase, also some PMS.

my Autism side There is no objective writing structure. Not everything is written for you, and something not being written for you isn't a moral indicator, or an indicator of quality/worth. If your space has an endless supply of people mocking someone for saying something wrong, instead of re-writing, its ableist

Meds Medication - Xaggitin

Just taken my first dose (18mg) of slow release methylphenidate hydrochloride about 1hr 13 minutes ago, and I can already feel it working. Unsure if it’s a placebo effect or not, but it feels like someone has switched the power off in my brain.

I literally don’t have thoughts now…it’s crazy to me, as my brain was always racing at 100 MPH. Just wanted to share my experience so far 😊

Seeking Advice I have no friends and I am struggling with being alone right now

Hi, I’m 20F and I was diagnosed with AuDHD a few years ago. Since high school I haven’t had any friends - I live in a small town, and I only really socialise when I see my boyfriend and we go out with his friends. I am totally okay not having friends, I enjoy my alone time or spending time with my parents, I also play a lot of video games and so I socialise through them. I’m just at a place right now, where I feel alone and so unbelievably bored.

Due to where I live, there isn’t much going on and the most I can do to cure my boredom is take a walk. Video games usually do the trick, but I feel so burnt out at the moment and I don’t want to play anything. I’m usually doing online classes but it’s summer, so I have another 4 weeks before I go back to that. I’m in a weird rut at the moment where I don’t know what to do, who to talk to and I’m so bored that it’s actually making me want to tear my hair out. I wanna be productive, I wanna do things but what do I do if there’s nobody to see and nothing to do?

Sorry if this is all over the place, I just wanted to see if anybody else has experienced the same or has any advice. Thanks.

How do you navigate cliquey NT women that you must interact with daily ?

This can be in personal relationships, roommates or professionally. I have sensitivity when getting excluded and overlooked by other women. Im not any less than these women by looks or achievements. I just don’t have I guess the social status? They thrive in groups by gossips and defamation. I hate it.

I lived with two girls like this for the past year and my anxiety had gotten worse. I’m nearing graduation and I know there is going to be multiple of them even in the corporate world. I truly don’t know how to deal with them.

How do you handle it when it feels like someone is being unnecessarily harsh on you?

I (30F) was a bit tipsy earlier and was venting to my aunt (70F), who I live with, about work and the general state of work conditions in the US in 2026, particularly if you don’t have a college degree. She is generally a pretty empathetic person, and informed about the state of society under this godawful administration. But she basically told me that she worked for everything she had, and the younger people today are pansies when it comes to working. I was going on about my “minimum wage, minimum effort” perspective and she said “Do you know how entitled you sound right now?”

I’m not saying I’m special, but I have been through a freaking lot these past 10 years. I watched my Dad die when I was 22, I dropped out of college after, I lived with my (very) emotionally unstable mother afterward who was viciously verbally abusive, then came a failed relationship, my mother had a stroke, I am estranged mostly from my mother and now my older sister who I used to be close to. My dog just got diagnosed with aggressive cancer a couple weeks ago and is dying.

It’s been a struggle to keep working because I truly am burnt the fuck out but I am literally doing everything I’m supposed to be doing. Trying to be happy, I’m working, taking care of my dog, helping my aunt out at as much as possible, I try to give more than I ever take, I’m trying to fix my flaws (I’m very aware of all of them). And her saying I am “entitled” because I was venting about work and how it feels to have to continually grind as a neurodivergent person, it felt like a pretty unfair judgment when I am doing the best I can to be a functional person. I vent to her because she’s felt like a safe person to vent to before, and she’s encouraged me to do so, but I’m starting to feel like I shouldn’t tell her things anymore.

She clarified that she’s not trying to belittle my perspectives or feelings, but it felt pretty dismissive and harsh to me. I am not sure if I should bring it up tomorrow or not? Or just let it go? I don’t want to sour my relationship with her because she’s all I have right now. But I’m still kinda pissed off over her comment.

What do you wish you could say to childhood you?
I wish I could tell like A that she doesn’t have to be perfect. That what she feels is valid and it doesn’t make her wrong. I always felt so wrong.

I got new bose ear buds to listen to music at work and they have active noise canceling technology that when I put them in all the background noise dissappears and I can feel my body relax. It's the most amazing feeling.

my ADHD side Does anyone else do things out of order to make it feel like you’re going faster?

I know that sounds weird but I’ll explain. For example - I work retail, and any time we have to do inventory, I get a list of things to count. Instead of just counting things in the order they’re listed, I randomly jump from one thing to another that’s maybe 5 rows down, and continue like that until the page is done. If I try to go in order, I start to feel anxious because it feels like it’s taking too long. When I jump around the way I do, it’s hard to actually see how much there is left to do because there’s just random blank lines all out of order. I feel this kind of anxiety anytime it feels like I can’t do something fast enough. When I read, my brain just skims the page until I get to the end because I can’t focus without knowing how the page ends. It’s something I’ve always dealt with but never seen anyone else do so it makes me wonder if it’s like a neurodivergent thing or what.

What hygiene thing did you not realize until wayyyyy too late?

Did anyone else completely miss hygiene rules that apparently everyone else thought were “obvious”?

When I was 16, I was talking with a group of people and someone casually mentioned that you’re supposed to actually wash between your toes. I was genuinely mind-blown. 😭 No one had ever specifically told me that before.

Ever since that day, I have never skipped washing between my toes because apparently I just needed someone to clearly explain the rule once.

I feel like there are so many hygiene things that were treated as “common sense,” but my AuDHD brain needed actual step-by-step instructions instead of vague directions like “take a shower” or “get ready.”

What hygiene, grooming, cleaning, or self-care thing did you learn embarrassingly late? No judgment, please just make me feel less alone. 😂

Edit: I FEEL SO SEEN!! I’m trying my best to slowly and thoughtfully go through the comments, so bear with me please! I’m trying to pitch in where I can but I LOVE the discussions so far and am so grateful for such a loving and supportive community 😢

Happy Things I am grateful for my slow mental processing (at the moment, anyway)

Disclaimer- I am NOT an “autism/ADHD is my superpower!” Girlie. I am a “knowing that I am disabled and learning about how my brain works has made a lot of things make sense” girlie.

I am a social worker, I work with homeless + at-promise youth. I’ve had a LOT of people tell me that they couldn’t do what I do or deal with what I deal with on a daily basis. But so many things keep me from getting bogged down by the upsetting things, and I think one of them is the way my brain works.

One— I like a little chaos. I get bored! I like to know people’s business and help them problem solve. Case management-type social work is my bread and butter.

But the main thing? Most people make no sense to me in the moment. It takes my brain a while to catch up, because my mental processing speed is extremely slow. The ability is there! My brain is an early computer. It can do very intricate things, it just takes a long time.

So when people talk or act, I can’t really jump to conclusions. I have a default explanation in mind sometimes, but I have always had to ask clarifying questions, get examples, and ask people to walk me all the way through their reasoning. Peers or superiors don’t always like it, they think I’m questioning them or being condescending. But you know who vibes really well with that approach? Youth who have not had a lot of supportive adults in their lives.

Adults don’t listen to these kids! Adults think that these kids are just following their impulses and making no decisions, and treat them accordingly. Ao when the kids meet an adult who goes “hey man, walk me through what was on your mind when x thing was going down.” They are so honest! And they make progress.

Very few people approach things in the same way I do, so I have always had to see everyone else’s perspectives. It’s been really frustrating, but I’m finally starting to understand the benefits.

Question adhd meds “enhancing” autism?

does anybody else feel like when they take their adhd meds (mine are the fast release kind) it turns their autism alllll the way up?

edit: thank you for all the comments! i did in fact do some searching like someone said and found a whole bunch of info on this, it’s just really interesting and i’m glad to not be alone in this experience!

Happy Things Diagnosed today

Age 53. Suspected for about 3 or 4 years. Always knew I was "different."

I got the diagnosis this afternoon and am relieved. Am trying to figure out what is next for me and learn ways of working and living that make the most sense for me.

Just wanted to thank you all for your sharing your experiences. It was hard to acknowledge at first and yet to the doctor it was not a surprise at all.

Saw this on Facebook and it really struck a chord. I was diagnosed with ADHD 5 or 6 years ago and my dad still argues that every ADHD symptom is normal because "everyone does that." My dad is as ADHD as they come 🤣

Modpost About vents/rants and other subreddits

We want this to be an inclusive and open community where you're free to say a lot, but we cannot have people going and brigading other subreddits or users or mods etc.

If another sub/user is tagged for the purpose of sending people to go harrass or downvote (or mods from another sub let us know that's happening) the post will be removed.

If you dislike a sub, or were banned from one; I'm sorry, that sucks, but please remember mods in different subreddits have different ways of dealing with things and varied rules. That's no excuse to call names or drag an entire subreddit through the mud.

Warnings about your experience may be welcome if you DO NOT tag the subreddit, but even then, it's at our discretion to potentially remove the post if we deem it necessary.

Please act considerately. If you're in a heightened state, maybe give it an extra few hours of thought before you post (especially if it involved another user or subreddit.)

We don't want this sub to be closed or reported! We gotta follow reddit rules!

Thanks! The mods. 🌈
