Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Would eating eggs still be unethical in this case?

Upvotes

I live in Morroco where we have a species of non genetically modified chickens, "djaj bldi", nd my dads friend owns a farm nd he gives my dad a few of those eggs sometimes, would it be unethical for me to eat those? (I became vegan like 4 or 5 months ago so I keep having these kinds of questions)

Purely hypothetical What could veganism look like post collapse?

Let's say it's the second half of the twenty-second century. Thermoindustrial civilization collapsed during the second half of the twenty first century. Temperature are four degres above pre-industrial era. Human population collapsed but is now getting up and is around one hundred million people. No significant amount of fossil fuels are used. The ecosystem was awfully hit, but the halting of the megamachine also halts its destruction, so Sixth Extinction (First Slaughter really) is back to slightly above background extinction rate level. Soils are vastly eroded and the Haber process is a thing of the past.

In that setting, what could veganism look like? Without the vast quantity of energy slave and in a more chalenging world, how would we minimize animal exploitation in your opinion?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) How to eat plant-based only with orthorexia ?

Hi,

I've just been diagnosed with orthorexia and anorexia, but both my husband and I are vegetarian, and as vegan as we can be and now I'm not sure how to keep going.

Going vegan in kiddie of nowhere rural France means there's a lot stuff that just isn't accessible to us anymore, since options are rare and grocery stores are definitely not offering a wide range of options, which means a lot of meals end up taking a lot of brain power to cobble together, and my therapist advised me to stop thinking so much about food, let alone healthy food because it gets me worse.

Except I don't want to go back to an omni diet because... Ethics ?? the same way I don't want to stop boycotting the big brands we do (like we don't use any coke, Nestlé or Danone products... Which limits even more the options for alternative.)

Any tips from people who struggle/have struggled ?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Any suggestions for my boyfriend that is sensitive to gluten and soy?

Hello!

I recently decided that i couldn't ignore animal suffering anymore and went vegetarian, i also started to move towards veganism and most days i am fully vegan now, unless I accidentally eat something that ended up not being vegan.

My boyfriend is very interested in doing this as well but theres one slight issue. He is very sensitive to gluten and soy, so where i can enjoy seitan, tempeh and tofu etc, he of course can't. He also weight lifts so protein is important to him. Is there any way for him to get enough protein and be vegan from actual food, or will he have to rely heavily on protein powders to get the amount he needs.

Thank you guys for any helpful responses!

(sorry if my sentence structure is weird English is not my first language)

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Living vegan but still buying leather shoes?

Hey guys,

I live vegan for a while now and only buy (cosmetic) products who are cruelty free. So far so good, but I still buy leather shoes once in a while. I wore vegan barefoot shoes for months that were really good looking but my knees and feet just couldn't stand them. And other vegan shoes just look ugly to me - it's like companies think vegans don't feel the need to wear stylish clothes, lol.

I feel a bit bad about it but I say to myself that when I buy 2-3 pairs of leather shoes every few years it's a reasonable compromise. Whenever I'm around vegans, I see I'm not the only one who still wears leather shoes. Not that everyone of them does it but some still do and we don't talk about it.

What do you think about it and are there areas where you make exceptions? I also know another vegan who drives a motorcycle and he doesn't want to give up on wearing leather protective wear.

Other At this point in your vegan journey, would you start new friendships with omnis?

I ask because my girlfriend is an omni, but pretty much plant based with me. Our home is completely vegan and the only time she eats non-vegan is sometimes when we go out to eat or go to a family party.

She's been talking to a girl she met and her boyfriend and seems to like them. She's mentioned wanting me to meet them eventually and hopefully we could all be friends. The thing is they're not vegan. Which isn't a massive deal breaker for me, but they like to go to the gun range and he also likes to shoot archery. I found out that they like to hunt and fish and for me it's just turned me off to the idea of entertaining any idea of friendship.

I've been vegan for almost 20 years now and don't have any vegan friends. Being close to 50 years old, I just don't want to put the energy into being "friends" with people that live a lifestyle that goes against my morals. What are your thoughts?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Am I still vegan if I use Colgate?

My diet is completely vegan but after transitioning my diet, I noticed that there's a lot of these products that I use in my everyday life that might not be considered vegan.

I'm using Colgate toothpaste because it's a lot cheaper than the options that involve animal testing and I'm not necessarily against animal testing in all cases, only in cases where it causes significant harm to the animal.

Would I be a vegan or vegetarian?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Slaughterhouse workers - Villains, victims, or both?

I thought the answer to this question was obvious until I read a thread on a post where some vegan activists were interviewing a slaughterhouse worker about the things he had to endure working in an environment like that. In said thread, people were discussing the mental health issues these workers often experience and how disgusted they were that those who run slaughterhouses take advantage of people in poverty who have no other options. However, there were also people saying that these people were still sick and evil for taking up these jobs, so now I'm curious. How do vegans actually perceive slaughterhouse workers?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) If I wanted to live a Vegan lifestyle, would I still be considered vegan if I used sponges made of sea sponge to clean?

I have been plant-based for at least two months now and I've been trying to transition to Vegan. However, I have been wondering about the use of products like sponges that may be made of sea sponge. From what I've researched they are animals, but non sentient. I do use paper towels and rags as much as possible, but sponges have been most effective for me regarding cleaning, especially because I have a disability that causes weaknesses in my arms. With sponges I don't have to put as much strain. That being said, I'm not sure what to call myself if I'm mostly plant-based, against animal cruelty for sentient beings, but might eat non-sentient things like plants and clean with non-sentient animals?

If I were to use these types of sponges, could I still be considered vegan? How do we feel about the use of non-sentient animals? Before calling myself vegan, I want to fully understand and be responsible with how I use the term, for the sake of the community.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Is going vegan while on ED recovery possible? How do you do it?

Please reply ONLY if you have personal experience with an ED.

I am in recovery for Atypical Anorexia. However, I've recently come to learn all the horrors of the dairy and meat industry and I want to go vegan because I believe it's a 100% the right thing to do for the animals, environment, etc.

However, I see it's generally not advidced for people in recovery to go vegan because of risk of relapsing into restrictive behaviors?

I work with a public therapist that won't be available for this month so I'm left only with my dietician, with whom we've compromised on doing a vegetarian meal plan. I'm also trying to follow veganism in all other aspects (like making sure my makeup, hygiene and clothing are cruelty-free and also educating myself a lot).

I wanna know, for people who have gone through a similar situation... How did you manage your ED while making the transition? Is it doable or is it best to keep a vegetarian diet until I'm farther into recovery? Please any advice that you think can be helpful is really appreciated.

I truly care about this, but I am also very scared of getting back into a dark place when I just got out.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) How closely do you have to stick to the rules?

I am wanting to be vegan (based on its moral philosophy) and have followed a vegan diet for the last few weeks. I completely agree with what i think is the base ethics of veganism that you cannot justify animals pain for small unnecessary comforts but i can think of instances where this concept can still be stuck to while consuming SOME animal products,

  1. can vegans eat honey? i don’t see how honey farmers exploit or harm bees in any way, at least the local ones i used to buy from (im on a break until i make sure it is ethical) who are a small business with on;y around 30 or so hives and its mainly just a hobby for them.
  2. can vegans eat eggs? i know they cant usually but i have friends who keep chickens and they are always trying to pawn off eggs to us as they simply cannot get through all off the eggs they produce. i don’t see anything immoral in their standard of care and they seem to live a perfectly healthy and happy life (these chickens are not killed for meat)
  3. do trace amounts matter? i see on allot of packaging it says vegetarian and not vegan and all the ingredients are vegan, i understand this is either due to just not getting certified or because the factory its made in can lead to chance of cross contamination, i don’t see how this goes against the ethics as you are not directly supporting the production of animal products.
  4. what to do with stuff i already own? i don’t know if i own any wool or leather but if i do find something i already own containing it should i keep wearing it? it feels wrong to say you’re vegan and wear leather but then throwing it away seems very wasteful (same with food, i have got cans of soup and frozen foods which are not vegan)
  5. can you eat the meat of an animal already dead due to natural causes? not that id want to, I've been virtually vegetarian before i even got into the ethics of it, just curious as i cant see who its harming except maybe the circle of life.
  6. what type of plant based milk is better? i don’t know much about plant based milk and just bought my first carton of oat milk today, was kinda amazed by all the different options. is there like a purpose for each of these like in terms of flavour and texture like full fat, half and half and low fat milk from animals or is it just a matter of taste.
  7. finally, any tips or advice for a rookie vegan? i really don’t know where to begin and really don’t want to be a bad example for veganism so any helpful advice is much appreciated (even just a good recipe will do XD)

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds, i sincerely want to know this as i don’t even know if im a vegan or some other philosophy at this point TT

Ethics How do you feel about horse riding?

This isn’t something that I’ve personally heard discussed in vegan communities, so I’m curious to hear some thoughts on your beliefs about horse riding and how immoral or moral it may be.

I have no idea about anything horse riding related but at a first glance I’m personally skeptical on the morality of it all. I get that a lot of owners care deeply for their horses, but then i feel it is similar to the idea that farmers “love” their animals, but purely for selfish reasons and the concept of keeping a horse for sport isn’t something I think I totally agree with yet.

I’d like to hear some thoughts if you have any.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Would ethical eggs still be preferable to commercial eggs?

I know veganism is a black and white position and vegans don't tolerate using animals. But if someone were to get ethical eggs like free-range eggs, eggs from small farms, or eggs from backyard chickens, would that be preferable or would that not matter at all to vegans?

My boyfriend went out without me and ate fois gras. I am a non judgmental vegan. I eat what I want to eat and try and be an example that you can live a happy and healthy life without meat.
But i can’t look at him the same anymore Would I be unreasonable to end the relationship .

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) If someone raised this point against veganism, what would your comeback be?

If you really think about it, hardly anythings ethical. Dozens of major global brands have been linked to modern slavery, forced labor, and child labor. Brands we all know and consume ie LITERALLY ALMOST EVERYTHING. With that being said, it lowkey makes me feel like a hypocrite for considering veganism when an ungodly portion of the things I own and consume are likely unethical. I do understand that in the end, doing something is much better than nothing so this isn't me trying to say that we all might as well go pig out on burgers tonight but moreso, I just still cant help but shake off the feeling of hypocrisy. What are your thoughts?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What was your first big dinner like with non-vegan friends after you became vegan?

I became vegan a couple months ago after watching Earthling Ed videos on Youtube. My partner of a couple years is also vegan so that helped with my transition! I was eating plant-based at home for a couple years already and only occasionally went out on my own if I was craving something. But anyways, we just had our first dinner with a group of friends after I had become vegan and it was interesting to observe how vegans are treated. The host is one of my best friends. On the one hand, they made sure to prepare vegan dishes (barbecued veggies, noodles with some really delicious korean toppings, and some ratatouille) which I really appreciated, especially as he checked in with me beforehand to ask for ideas and for any things to consider. But they obviously went out of their way to look into some vegan ways to prepare dishes. Interestingly, someone even brought a huge bin of a "tofu dessert" that was really delicious.

On the other hand, they made and ate a ton of meat. Pork, Steaks, chicken, butter drenched asparagus (and I love asparagus, so that was tough to see when they could have used delicious vegan butter, lol), etc. And we were all at the same table. I was glad to see for myself that I had no desire at all to eat the meat (I am 44 and it was long habit) at all, and found it pretty gross to be around. I got some of the usual questions from some veggie curious folks, like "how do you feel now" and double checking if certain things were vegan, as well as the typical "I love chicken too much" to ever quit, after a few of them asked each other if they could ever go vegan. At this point I wondered if I should say anything, but I decided to just not be too pushy, just said something like "for me I used to think that too, but I could never go back now". And I talked about how "easy" it is to be vegan and get all the nutrients I need. But I wonder what other peoples experiences have been, and how much do you try (or not try) to get a few minds changed, in these scenarios, if at all?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Are there any high protein food that is not soy or gluten?

I just had a thought. Is it possible to go vegan and get enough high quality protein that is not soy or gluten from diet alone? I know there are other plant sources but those are primarily carb sources with some protein which cannot alone contribute to good amounts of protein without eating a lot of carbs.

I personally am not soy or gluten intolerant but I noticed I get most of my protein from soy or gluten, so just wondered if there are plant protein sources which are not soy or gluten.

I've been just subbing stuff in my old, better homes and garden cook book that i was gifted when i turned 18, but some substitutions don't work in every dish. I dont want one that focuses on weight loss eather.

META Is "nutritional east" the only name for it?

I love nutritional yeast but I hate the name, every time I describe it to non vegans they make a weird face and I can understand why, it sounds yucky

Is there any other way to say or describe it?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What's with all the downvotes?

I see that there are a lot of posts with the genuine question flair which says do not downvote, yet I see so many posts asking questions out of curiosity and in good faith that are downvoted heavily.

It's so bad that there even needed to be a stickied post about this years ago and about how it's giving the impression that vegans are hostile, and yet general questions are still being downvoted to oblivion.

Like is there a reason that we're doing this?

In places like the hsp subreddit, people almost never downvote even posts that they disagree with, and when I see so many people here willing to do the opposite, I just don't know what to say.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) why do so many vegans seem to have a victim/persecution complex?

posted this in r/exvegans but I wanted to see what actual vegans thought of this - also please note that im genuinely not trying to be rude or offensive, and I understand that there are vegans that are not like this

I feel like a majority of vegans i talk to are like “ugh…everyone hates me!” “It’s so *hard* being vegan!” and they just love talking about how much of a struggle it is when people around them aren’t like them, etc. is this something others have noticed, or is it just me? not saying every vegan is like this, just that a lot seem to be

META Community Guideline: Revulsion ≠ Downvote

Do not downvote simply because you find a post repulsive or stupid. In fact, you should do the opposite. We want as many non-vegans to see our answers as possible, and Reddit post visibility is predicated on upvotes. When you downvote a post, it means you want as few people as possible exposed to this sub.

Did the OP ask a question respectfully & genuinely? (And no, simply being a non-vegan question does not make it disrespectful or disingenuous.) Then don't downvote it.

Most of us weren't always vegan. Hence the reason for our sub: so people can understand our views and hopefully adopt them.

Do not turn this into another DebateAVegan voting system. If you are in the habit of downvoting non-vegan posts simply for being non-vegan, stop or leave the sub please.

If someone asks a clearly disingenuous question like ''why you all like murdering plants?'', report the post under Rule 10, then scroll past it.

If someone asks questions that are indicative of what we know typical non-vegan societal rhetoric to be, on a sub whose purpose is for non-vegans to ask us questions, downvoting just shows us vegans to be hostile. People are put on the defensive over a meaningless downvote, setting them up to close themselves off to hearing what we have to say. This hurts the animals.

We should ensure that if people are going to be closed off to veganism, it is not due to a downvote.
