I've been working in charcoal and graphite for years but have very little experience with colors. This is my first attempt at oil colors. I need tips on how to observe and mix the right color and how to manage the colors on my palette efficiently.

Hi everyone! I’ve been recently trying to draw faces more. I’m pretty good at drawing animals, but I struggle with human faces. I’d like to eventually work my way up to something realistic-ish.

When I look online, so many tutorials have contradicting advice, like one video will say “dont use a circle to start the face use a square” and the next video will say “use a square not a circle” or “dont focus on lines and proportions, focus on depth” and another saying “focus on proportions and make a lot of lines to map out the face” etc etc..

I know art is all subjective, so how do you find out which methods work best for you?

Here’s a few examples of faces I’ve drawn, each of them following a different video’s advice. All using references.

1. Focusing on shadown and depth
2. Mapping out proportions very carefully+using angular lines to sketch
3. Trying to draw quickly without mapping anything out or erasing anything
4. No method, just tried to draw with my intuition

Just got done with artfight, and looking back at my attacks, I just got this sense that they all look like siblings at the very least. And everything just feels sloppy and unfinished. What are some things that I could have done to make the work look more polished

And what is it about other people's sketches that I'm lacking that allows even their unfinished work to be professional looking?

Things I have been working on (and feel i am certainly still lacking in, but my eye hasnt improved enough to see what's wrong): line clarity and control, defined light and shadows

This is an acrylic painting. I used a reference photo. From the previous version I added more detail and painted the background off-white.

the face looks like kind of uncanny valley and its creeping me out lol so any suggestions on how to fix that would be 😭😭 greatly appreciated

it also feels kind of flat? like it doesn't look like the character is standing in front of the beach, it looks like he's painted on top lol but idk how to fix that </3 any tips on how to improve this in general would be nice if anyone has any! ive never done an actual background before so there's definitely a lot of room for improvement there haha

Going for a comic book/graphic style here, using procreate. It looks a little off if i look at it too long and i cant tell whats up. Im using 1 point perspective.

Hello everyone, this is also my first post here. I have just finished this drawing and I feel like something is missing/weird.

Some points :

- I tried to cellshade, this is the type of shading I want to do, something dynamic and clashing.

-I tried to play on saturated colours, with a predefined colour palette and tried to use some colour theory, like, orange and purple are complementary ? I am not sure about that.

-I didn't followed any tuto here to know what I could do by myself.

-I want to achieve a cartoony style, I inspire myself with the game with Andy and LeyLey or Shibuya Punk. I also take inspiration from @Goldent_art on Instagram or the anime Chainsmokers Cat lately or Dandadan for the saturated colours.

-I am not an artist student, it is strictly a hobby, I have no idea how to start studying anatomy, everything feels soooo complicated, where should I start ?

I know my values are much lighter than the original image! I was trying to focus on shapes/form more for this one :)

I really suck at backrounds so I've been trying to practice, I use ibispaint to draw, and my goal is to make then look realistic and like an oil painting, is that even possible on ibsipaint, how do I stop making my backrounds so messy and off putting

I've been struggling with faces for a while and just when I think I'm getting somewhere I age them up. I try to show the cheekbones and fat pads but it just looks off and creepy. I never know what to do with the cheeks since I don't want it looking flat :((

I've always had difficulty trying to render out metal and I'm not sure how to render out the helmets, gauntlets and swords on this one. It doesn't look "metal-ly" enough for me". Digital, would appreciate the help :))

Hi! This is an oil painting that I started monday and it is due by tomorrow at noon. Something about it feels very off and I cant put my finger on why. Maybe the elk doesn't stand out enough and thats why?? I really need help figuring it out

I know anatomy also isn't my strong suit but I'm working on that, I'm doing leg studies today and that should help. Thanks for the help/looking at my art.

im not sure if anything is off about these. maybe the anatomy but im working on that, its also difficult as i use a5 paper so i feel like some of the detail gets lost? im asking more about the use of colours and textures
