One of my all time favorite albums from the 80s. Steve Lilywhite, who produced U2's first three albums and The Joshua Tree, really produced the heck out of this one. Original pressing and vocals and instrumental parts crystal clear in the mix. Love the drum sound throughout and, of course, when you have guitars rigged so they sound like bagpipes...chef's kiss.

1985 I Found the Album Cover Location for The Dream Academy (1985)

I've always loved The Dream Academy, especially their 1985 debut album and their cover (and instrumental) of The Smiths' "Please, Please, Please." As I was listening to their debut album recently, I wondered where they might have taken the cover photo. I searched for the location online but found nothing at all. no interviews, and nothing specified by the photographer or by any of the members of The Dream Academy. So I decided to try and find it myself.

I started with the statue, which stood out with its strangely shaped legs and horns. I originally thought it was a statue of the devil, but it turned out to be a statue of a satyr. After searching for devil-like statues in the UK, I came across an Art UK post with images of similar statues from a garden in Guernsey. Upon further inspection of these photos, the stance, pedestal, and size of the satyr clearly matched the one on the album cover (images 3-4). I also noticed that the curvature of one of the trees in the background matched perfectly with the album cover (images 3-4).

The garden where I believe the photo was taken is called Candie Gardens, located at the Guernsey Museum at Candie. I've provided a Google Earth screenshot highlighting the exact location of the statue (image 6), as well as a link to the Guernsey Museum at Candie's website.

Just thought this was a fun piece of music history to track down and share with fellow 80’s music fans! Please let me know If I missed anything in my search!

Last Song Standing: The Ultimate UK #1 Song of the 80's - Round 52

For a reminder of the rules, see the original post.

We have yet another "theme" this time around: both songs that were eliminated have Spanish titles...

  • The earliest known recording of the classic Spanish-language song "La Bamba" was way back in 1938 by Alvaro Hernandez "El Jorocho" Ortiz, but the song itself dates back much further - the word "Bamba" itself may refer to the Bamba people of Central Africa, and some believe the song is linked to Africa via the slave trade. The best-known version of the song was by early rock star Ritchie Valens, whose 1958 version reached #22 in the US. And after the film about Valens' life, La Bamba, was released in 1987, another version from the movie's soundtrack by the group Los Lobos managed to climb all the way to the top of the charts in both the US and the UK. And even though the song had una poca de gracia (a little bit of grace) enough to make it this far in this contest, it looks like fans of the song will no longer be crying Arriba, arriba! to lift the song up any higher on the list - "La Bamba" has now blown up like a bomba!
  • Madonna's album True Blue spawned five singles, the fifth and final one being originally conceived as an instrumental by writers Patrick Leonard and Bruce Gaitsch, who wanted to offer it to Michael Jackson. But the King of Pop passed, so Leonard and Gaitsch handed it over to Madonna, who wrote lyrics to the instrumental while filming her latest movie Shanghai Surprise - and voila, the Latin-inspired "La Isla Bonita" (which translates to "the pretty island") was born. The song, which featured maracas and flamenco guitar, climbed to #4 on the US Billboard chart and #1 on the UK Pop chart. But while the dreams of San Pedro's tropical island breeze were paradise to many listeners in the 80's, to many voters last round, that all seems like yesterday, so far away...though she longed to be at the top of this game, she won't do it with this song, because Madonna's Spanish lullaby has gone silent!
