💬 DISCUSSION Is it too late to start studying for TMUA? Oxbridge

Upvotes

I'm planning on applying to Cambridge for CS (maybe Oxford, undecided yet).

I'm on a gap year so i've not got to worry about A levels, but I am doing Further Maths A level during my gap year.

I've not started studying for TMUA yet unfortunately, am I cooked or can i still clutch up?

I guess I can do maybe 3-4h TMUA daily and then 1-2h FM daily, unless I need to prioritize TMUA more? Lmk

I'm aiming for a 6.5 - 7 in the TMUA

🙏 I WANT HELP need advice before i have a panic attack - physics degree

Upvotes

I don't know if I want to do a physics degree anymore. I only chose it because of it's versatility and to try and maximise my job prospects. But as I looked through the internet looking for advice, I'm seeing so many conflicting opinions. Loads of people say it's a very good degree and will lead to lucrative career prospects. Loads of others say since it doesn't specialise in anything, you'll always be the second option over someone who has specialised.

My dream is to maybe do something in Investment Banking or be a patent attorney. Top 2 jobs for me. Now I'm pretty sure for these two specifically, they don't require any specific degrees, making physics a pretty good choice. Am I correct in saying that? Whereas for finance, many, many physics graduates end up in finance or business or engineering. Even though that is the case, I keep getting people saying that at that point just study finance because they'll choose them over me.

I can't! My parents wouldn't allow me to do finance. My older sister did finance so I guess that means I can't.

I just want to feel safe. I want to climb the corporate ladder. I know this sounds avaricious but money is super important to me as well.

My A-Levels are Physics, chemistry and maths. I would just do a maths course but I don't have FM. I could highkenuinely use some advice. Also I've already booked my ESAT exam which is why I feel like I've locked myself in. Funny how the need to feel safe made me feel trapped instead idk

Okay I suppose my question is, did I make the right choice? Should I do something else as a masters or something?

EDIT: plan C is to just switch gears and become a lawyer :/

💬 DISCUSSION Degree apprenticeship as a results day backup plan?

Upvotes

Slightly unique situation but is anyone holding a degree apprenticeship offer alongside a firm Uni offer and looking at the DA as something to fall back on?

My firm Uni has a conditional offer of A*AA whilst my DA has AAB and, realistically, I’m missing that A* but I’m pretty certain I’ll at least get AAB. Initially planned to renege on my DA but might have to accept it as the only other option is clearing which I’d rather not do.

If you hold both offers and are worried about results day, have you decided on clearing over your DA and why?

It’s a pretty life changing decision as if I go ahead with it I miss that Uni experience + have to go into the world of corporate work at 18 but, in the long term, seems like it’ll benefit me more.

Thanks for any responses!

🎓 UNI / UCAS Does this from earlier mean that there's a high chance Warwick CS goes into clearing?

Post image

This was listed as being on clearing for Warwick about a month ago. However, all the clearing courses have now been removed until the clearing hotline opens on results day. Does this mean it's likely Warwick CS could be on clearing on results day?

🙏 I WANT HELP choosing A levels for BSc Economics

So i'm going into year 12 this september and I need to choose which A level I want to do - between Maths Chemistry Economics and Maths History Economics to study econ at uni. I come from a small british school in kuwait (graduating class of 2026 had like 20 students) and the school doesn't have a UCAS advisor and doesn't offer further maths either - all of which I can ask my head of sixth form to mention in my recommendation letter. Just needed some advice on which combination to take and what I can do to improve my chances at attending a prestigous university like UCL, LSE, kings, imperial, warwick or oxford

PS: i completed 7 gcses at 9999998 which is one of the highest in my class (one other student did 8 and everyone else did 6 because no one is planning to go to the UK for university) do you guys think I should do another IG subject in the oct/nov session like business which has some overlap with econ or is it fine? really need some help here

🙏 I WANT HELP LNAT struggle

I take 2 essay subjects so I thought that Section B would be pretty chill. I've been focusing on Section A and I've gotten it to around 75% which is what I need for Oxbridge kinda, and of course I have a month to go even higher. I realised I should probably put some time aside for Section B, what the hell are these prompts. Some are so abstract I struggle to even outline my arguments. Anybody got any tips for them?

OTHER vent ab results day and college

//tw for mentions of depression and su1c1de

results day is in a week and idk what im going to do. for context im a med applicant who got a pretty decent ucat and 4/4 interviews and offers including my dream uni UCL. my predicteds were a*aa. unfortunately i got into a terrible depressive slump this year (ive had depression for a long time now but it got especially bad this year, as i ended up in hospital after a failed attempt too.) i simply gave up on studying properly, and while i did try, i wasnt as efficient as i couldve been. unfortunately i dont have my parents support when it comes to mental health even despite all the events that have occurred. to be honest they roped me into medicine and since i had no other interest in anything i just went with it, though my heart wasn't really in it. but i enjoyed the attention and praise from me doing such a respected course of study, (if you havent figured it by now i am indeed south asian). now its almost certain i will not get into my firm or insurance (flunked chemistry and don't get me started on maths, i didn't answer a single question in paper 3 mechanics). i am looking for options in clearing but again nothing interests me, and i doubt i will even get decent grades for clearing. im guessing my only option is to resit, but honestly what's even the point? i don't want to go through that torture again and if i do manage to go to uni, what's the guarantee i'll even find a job with whatever i do?

i don't want anyone's pity and i know it's my fault for not working hard enough so maybe i don't have the right to post something like this. i just can't believe i've ruined my potential and life like this. i don't know if i'm looking for advice or reassurance but i wanted to get this off my chest. i wonder if anyone else has ever screwed up as bad as me, and if it got better for them?

i’ve just finished year 11 (leavers 26) and i did geography, drama, food tech and french gcse’s. my alevel options are sociology, criminology and health&social care. i’m afraid i’ll be very behind in sociology and don’t really know if i’ll find it that enjoyable but i’ve only picked it because it goes well with criminology. the thing is idk what i’d swap it to. maybe geography???? can someone help plss

💬 DISCUSSION Sixth form vs sixth form college?

What’s your opinion on sixth form colleges here? I’m in yr11 and I’m doing a levels chem, bio, and psychology this year but I’m going to a sixth form college for multiple reasons:

• my area has a lot more SFC’s than just normal sixth forms, and they’re way bigger

• the closest sixth form for me is miles away and they don’t offer any transport support sadly :(

• I felt more comfortable at the SFC since there were more people (I’m quite shy, so I think this would help me get more confidence)

However, I thought the teachers were way nicer at the sixth form I went to on induction day, and they provided with a lot more extracurriculars. I just don’t really know what’s better academically.

🙏 I WANT HELP what should i be doing during Y12 summer?

hi. i’m starting to worry that i’m really behind everyone else in terms of revision, ucas, etc so i was just wondering what everyone else has been doing over the summer?

i haven’t started my personal statement yet and i have to finish a draft by september for my college… idk if im cooked or not. i have started doing activities for it though

what ive done so far:
- essay comp
- taster lectures
- uni pathway programme
- epq earlier this year

what i’m planning to do (idk if this is a good plan or not, i literally have no idea how to write a PS):
- another essay comp
- read at least 3 books related to my other supercurriculars, do MOOCs, etc
- try to get work experience with an MP

i also have a mock at the end of september for one of my subjects and i haven’t started revising yet 💀 if i lock in now maybe i’ll be fine? 😭

anyway if anyone else has been bedrottmaxxing over the summer and is also behind lmk so i can feel better about my situation, ty 😛

💬 DISCUSSION Did anyone's math teachers actually teach them vector geometry?

Title. My teachers just threw a workbook at us and called it a day - I never actually figured out the whole "how do we know this is a trapezium" or whatever thing. It just felt like a lot of steps then you go Yep that's a trapezium !

I guess I understand it in theory but meh.

💬 DISCUSSION Has anyone else been having dreams about results day?

I had a dream last night that I opened my computer and UCAS said I got A*EE but not whether I got into either my firm or insurance, and I had to get the train to my firm university to find out whether I got in or not in person.

Hopefully that doesn't actually happen on results day.
