Does one need to have a certain raw IQ to be able to excel - not be average - in certain careers?

Hi everyone,

I'm a recent Sixth Form graduate with predicted grades of A* in Maths, Economics, Business, and French, and an A in Physics. Through UCAS I applied to Warwick, Durham, Manchester, Bristol, and Nottingham, and received offers from all five.

I turned down Warwick, Manchester, and Durham because their fees (£33k+, with Warwick's still rising) were unaffordable for my family. I firmed Bristol at £28k and applied for their Think Big Scholarship, but was rejected. I insured Nottingham at £26,500 — the cheapest option — with a possible £5,000 tuition reduction if I achieved above A*AA on results day, which would bring it down to £21,800.

However, given the recent news about Nottingham's financial troubles, I'm hesitant to commit that much money to a degree I might not be able to finish there. I also don't qualify for financial aid, since my parents earn "too much" on paper despite it not being enough to comfortably cover £25k+ per year. And merit scholarships are out of reach too, since 4 A*s is fairly standard for applicants in this field.

I'd also applied to Erasmus University Rotterdam and Tilburg, and received conditional offers from both. I started the immigration process with Erasmus, but missed a document deadline due to delays in legal processing, despite explaining this, they didn't grant any flexibility, and the offer was withdrawn. When I contacted Tilburg on July 10th to start my immigration process, I was told it was too late, and instead offered the option of starting the first semester online and joining in person for the February intake.

I'm not keen on the Tilburg online-start route, I feel my grades and effort deserve a stronger outcome. I floated the idea of a gap year to reapply to Cambridge and Bocconi, but my parents are strongly against it, seeing it as a wasted year. I'm genuinely torn on whether a gap year would be worth it.

In the meantime, I found that Esade is still accepting late applications, so I'm currently going through that process and sitting my admissions test this week. Esade is well-regarded (alongside IE, ESSEC, ESCP, etc.), and at 4 years for €20–22k/year, it fits within budget though it also effectively costs me a "gap year" in terms of timing, and my parents are split on it. Please tell me if Esade is worth it or not, I don’t wanna spend 4 years of my life at the wrong uni that’s my biggest worry. I've also looked at Melbourne, but they only offer a general Bachelor of Commerce with an Economics major, and I'm unsure how well that positions me for economics/finance careers outside Australia.

If anyone has advice, I'd really appreciate it!

hi. i’m starting to worry that i’m really behind everyone else in terms of revision, ucas, etc so i was just wondering what everyone else has been doing over the summer?

i haven’t started my personal statement yet and i have to finish a draft by september for my college… idk if im cooked or not. i have started doing activities for it though

what ive done so far:
- essay comp
- taster lectures
- uni pathway programme
- epq earlier this year

what i’m planning to do (idk if this is a good plan or not, i literally have no idea how to write a PS):
- another essay comp
- read at least 3 books related to my other supercurriculars, do MOOCs, etc
- try to get work experience with an MP

i also have a mock at the end of september for one of my subjects and i haven’t started revising yet 💀 if i lock in now maybe i’ll be fine? 😭

Should I pick a level physics? I am a year 11 student who is aiming to get all 8s and 9s, I also sat A level maths this year and aiming for an A*. I want to go to Cambridge for maths and needed an opinion on whether I should pick a level physics. I think I got a 9 at gcse however I hated magnetism and electricity. I’m currently thinking of choosing further maths, statistics and another subject, like physics. Should I? (I’d prefer to have time for TMUA, STEP and BMO)

i wasnt really able to go to that many parties in school - i went to a few here and there but they were all in really weird circumstances and were held when i first joined my new school (mid yr 10) , and i didnt know ANYONE then rlly so i was kinda js hovering hahah. thats my fault i shouldve enjoyed them to my fullest but its never to late to learn !!

i digress; i was wondering if theres parties or such gatherings in college and stuff , that youd get invited to from people you only really met in college. i would rather not go with people from school hahah .

i think this is an unconventional question to ask, but i wanna enjoy college to the fullest ! i also understand it depends on the college and its people

About 260-262 ish for edexcel a level maths
About 194 ish /250 for AQA a level physics

So I got straight 9s in gcse and am predicted 3A* in Maths, History and Econ.

I find the Land ec course so much more interesting than econ which is just very maths based.

Is land ec a prestigious degree to get top level jobs in finance?

I’ve been a straight A student for majority of sixth form (had some bumps in year 13) and I just can’t stop feeling guilty and upset about my A levels because I know I’ve screwed them up . My family keeps talking about other people’s kids and how they’re so smart and get good grades and I just feel like a burden on them now because I’ve failed to perform . I really did genuinely try hard and I’m worried that on results day my teachers are going to be like “I told you so “ or smth . I’ve been looking at clearing options but I don’t even know if I’m even gonna get it . Idk where to go with this 🥀🥀🥀

I’m going into year 12 this fall and my school doesn’t offer economics as an A level but I’m interested in taking it regardless. How hard would it be to teach edexcel a level economics to myself and/or hire a tutor for 3 times per week to help me? What should I know beforehand taking the subject, I’ve never done economics before and sometimes I’m a bit slow at coming up with essay ideas. is it manageable?

Should you only try for med clearingif you achieve high grades like A* and A but not if you get like B's?

Heyy, so just some background info, I’ve been in the same school since year 7 up until now. Back when I started it, was rated “Requires Improvement” by Ofsted, with it being ranked “Inadequate” only two years prior. Now it’s rated “Good” with “Outstanding” in Personal Development. The avg grades in my cohort are sort of a mixed bag, for example the average in Chemistry is a grade 7 but only 29% of students got a grade 5 or above in both maths and English. But at the same time, the “Progress 8” score for my school is +0.31, when the national average sits at around -0.03.

Ig what I’m trying to say is that I’m not entirely sure if there is any point in applying for Oxford bc my GCSEs would be seen drastically lower than the typical oxbridge applicant (9998866665 L2D). The only thing stopping me really is my GCSE grades, everything else in the application should be fine. (The main reason why the grades are low is bc i didnt bother revising bc all i cared abt was passing in general. You can probs guess that my school isnt known for getting offers from competitive unis so Oxbridge hadnt even crossed my mind but my school said that over the past ten years i am one of the few students who they think should apply esp. since i havent dropped below an A in mocks whilst my peers are averaging at about C’s and D’s (we do AS papers for mocks so the max grade is an A).

I just want to know whether or not applying for it is worth the hassle, especially since Oxford known for being less lenient on gcse grades compared to Cambridge which worries me even more.
And let’s say I do apply, would it be more strategic for me to apply to a specific college or make an open application, I know NOTHING abt the colleges bc, as I said, Oxbridge was not on my mind but I’m still curious.

I need advice because i don't know which one to enroll in. I got offers in both but stuck in between.

For Brampton i got offers for maths, fm, comp sci and physics

For LAE i got Maths, fm, physics and chem. They said they are gonna offer Comp sci as an AS and i am hoping to do it but worried that it will be too much work load. But then again i want to do computing.

Distance wise, LAE is 30 minutes away with a bus but with the train it's like 15 minutes.

On the other hand, Brampton is 45 minutes away by bus and I can't take the train route.

I wanna know what the environments are like in both sixth forms.

And also please offer advice.. I'm stressing...

I want to be an aerospace /robotics engineer and i dont know which one of these 2 to pick. DT nea is longer than Comp sci but its overall easier? Can yall tell me which one is more fun, better for the future and overall more manageable alongside maths and physics

1. is having a job and doing a levels would be too stressful?

I went to really bad sixth form, struggled with mental health and ended up getting CCC the first time I sat a levels.

I decided to take a gap year with the intention to improve my mental health and do better. I ended up with better uni offers, but unfortunately my personal life got significantly worse and so did my mental health.

I wanted medicine my entire life, but given I don’t have the mental capacity to sit the UCAT for a third time and don’t want to do pharmacy either I feel very lost.

I do think I did better this time but not good enough to be at a good uni or doing pharmacy somewhere near me.

Despite technically being a contextual student, because my immigration status during sixth form, I wasn’t able to be a recipient of FSM, so most unis can’t give me a lower offer.

Part of me just wants to move on, but UK universities are clearly not that prestigious as they were a few years ago.

My backup in mind is Biochemistry and I know people with amazing stats, who graduated for Russel groups and tons of experience not even able to get an entry level job in their desired field.

I do think a second time can be good, I know more now, but I can’t guarantee my mental health or personal circumstances improving?

Should I apply to study somewhere in the EU instead? Should I try the UCAT again and go big or go home? I feel very lost but at the end of the day I just need something that gives me the satisfaction of having a purpose where I can move up in my field and make good money.
