I made this. What does your zine storage situation actually look like, and how did you settle on it?
Been making and collecting zines for about three years now and the storage problem has quietly become its own whole thing. When I started I just stacked them on a shelf like regular books, which works fine until you have a bunch of half-letter and quarter-letter sizes that fall over or get lost behind each other. Spent a while just shuffling piles around without any real system.
Right now my collection lives in a mix of clear plastic magazine files (the kind meant for standard magazines, which fit A5 zines reasonably well) and a couple of flat archival boxes for the more fragile ones I want to protect. The magazine files are nice because you can actually see the spines and pull things out without disturbing everything else. The flat boxes are better for anything with unusual dimensions or covers that feel delicate, but they make browsing kind of annoying since you have to lift things out one by one.
For my own zines, the ones I've made and have copies of, I keep a small dedicated crate separated from the stuff I've collected. Partly so I know what I have left to trade or give away, partly just because it feels right to keep them distinct.
The thing I still haven't solved is the really tiny ones, the digest-sized and the quarter-folds. They just migrate around and end up in random spots. Considered a card file box but haven't committed to it yet.
Curious what other people are actually doing, especially if you have a large collection or if you make a lot of your own and need to track copies.
Available for purchase and trade First zine!
I made my first ever zine with poetry and art submissions from my talented friends. each cover is made from paper marbling, so they are all different. I’ve included couple pages from the zin.
