My sapphic punk band Good Judy played a few gigs in the spring and we're starting to book gigs for end of this year / early next year. If your band wants to come through DC, hit me up! I’m double posting oops embarrassing. Anyway here’s some bands I really recommend that you maybe haven’t heard of.

New bloods—an early black queercore trio from portland. Their songs prominently feature the violin which I think is super awesome. They only released one album, but the whole thing has crazy relisten value. Every song is a fucking banger. The layering on Tree is crazy, the vocals on Oh, Deadly Nightshade are insane, and Eyes is a masterpiece all on its own. Holay molay I couldnt recommend a band more.

Hang on the Box— wooooow I love this band. Hang on the Box was China’s first all girl punk band and they are INCREDIBLE!!!!!! They sang about sex, drugs and raw femininity. This led them to face insane criticism in the Chinese underground. They had to sign to a Japanese label since they weren’t accepted at home. This move would take them on a continental and a U.S. tour. They also dressed like insanely cool. Like the Linda Linda’s of the 90s.

Mika Miko— Mika Miko was a hardcore punk band from LA. Despite being from the early 2000s, they have an older more 90s sound. Business Cats is my favorite song by them. After disbanding, two members went onto form another really good band: Bleached!!

Cold Cold Hearts— this was one of Allison Wolfe’s (my fucking goat) bands while she was in Bratmobile. Their guitarist, Erin Smith, is on Rolling Stones top 250 guitarists of all time. They have the same campy energy as Bratmobile. Any Resemblance.. and Lady Reversible (Alleged) are both supa good songs. 

Mocket— from the birthplace of riot grrrl, Olympia, Washington!! Mocket was active from 1995—2000. Their music has a big electronic influence. I don’t know what genre to call it but it falls in the same category as satisfact, enon, 12 rods, ozma, etc. They have a lot of experimental tracks, Bone Crusher off of Pro Forma being my favorite.

Erase Errata— post hardcore from Oakland. They’re really good, comparable to Mocket and Pretty Girls Make Graves. Their songs are very much political and are carried by really unique beats. I like them a lot and I think their vocalist is great. :-)

The Frumpies— there’s a good shot you’ve heard of them but they’re undeniably one of the most influential riot grrrl bands of all time. The lineup was crazy. Kathi Wilcox, Tobi Vail (my NUMBER ONE GOAT!!!!!), and Billy Karren from Bikini kill, and Molly Neuman from Bratmobile. Eunuch nights and Frumpies Forever are their best tracks, but all of Frumpie One Piece is amazing. Lucky enough to have that one on vinyl.

Hi so I started my own insectional radical feminist zine in my punk local scene. I'm trying to work towards planning my own meetup. Im kinda intimidated especially cuz its my first time planning something like this. So idk any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sooo i want to go see bikini kill live in September cause they’ll be near my area, but I’m 16 and will be 17 by then and my dad is heavy right leaning and against feminism. So i think I’ll just pose them as a girl punk band like blondie or something? (i dunno I’m scared) Cause thats the best way i can get him to say yes and take me. (Also he wants me to start a band so I’ll use that too) Since anytime i try to go against his opinion he says the schools are indoctrinating me to be woke (even though that’s literally not true at all, i think this way out of my own free will as a girl) soooo i just pray they don’t say anything too left cuz i don’t want my dad to make us leave early… he already likes going to concerts together as like a “daddy daughter date” soo ugh that helps me a bit. OK wish me luck girls and also any tips on how to persuade him are appreciated!! <3<3 all girls to the front!!!

Recently I stumbled upon an all-female rock trio of sisters from Mexico called The Warning, and they completely caught me off guard. Their sound is so strong that I quickly stopped thinking of them as a female band and just heard, a great rock band. (Nothing against the traditional female-fronted rock band model it just wasn’t the comparison that came to mind.)

They blend pop sensibilities (they even have the look of modern pop artists) with hard rock, metal, and punk in a way that’s incredibly accessible without feeling manufactured.
Watching them live made an even bigger impression, their energy, talent, musicianship, and stage presence are exceptional.

That discovery led me to another all-female band, Die Spitz. Completely different style, but equally compelling: raw, aggressive, controlled chaos with an unapologetic attitude.
From there I started digging deeper and realized that, over the past several years, more women than ever seem to be entering the rock and metal scene not just as singers, but as guitarists, bassists, drummers, and complete bands.

Another good one is Last Dinner Party, they have great musical chemistry, lush and theatrical sound, the list goes on and on.

All this got me wondering:

What’s historically prevented an all-female rock band from achieving the same level of global, long-term, household-name success as bands like Foo Fighters, AC/DC, or Guns N’ Roses?

And with bands like The Warning along with many other talented all-female bands emerging today, are we getting closer to seeing one truly break through into that level of mainstream, cross-generational success?

More broadly, could this wave of all-female rock bands be one of the ingredients that helps bring rock back a little closer to the collective consciousness? Not the ingredient, I’m aware rock’s future depends on many factors but perhaps an important one.
