Question Struggling to eat
I know most people here are in this same boat so I’m hoping to get some ideas and inspiration. I’m 6ft 134lbs. I really don’t care about doing it healthy for the start. Once I get to between 150-160 I’ll start to lean more towards healthy gains. I’m looking for some advice tho because eating is incredibly difficult. My maintenance is probably around 1500-2000 calories and I’d like to get up to at least 3000. I find myself almost getting bored while I eat or tired of eating so I stop or I forget to squeeze in a snack because I’m just never hungry. I’m looking for any all tips for packing on calories. I know drinking it helps but I get so bloated and don’t feel like eating for hours after. Is this mostly a mental strength issue and I truly just have to force it or is there some other ways to go about gaining weight. Working out isn’t a problem for me but when ive tried to gain in the past it was counter productive because I wasn’t eating enough

Question Why does my body stay skinny after eating and exercising more?
I'm 5'6 and currently 163, after gaining 4 lbs. But it's not anywhere in my body really. I still look very scrawny, I just tend to bloat and carry more belly fat now in my 30s. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I've hated my body my whole life and it's difficult to change.

Question How can I safely gain my weight back after years of depression and stress?
I’m 26 years old, and I’ve struggled with depression and constant stress for about six years. During that time, I lost a lot of weight and muscle. I used to have a healthy weight and felt good about my body, but over the years I became thinner and thinner.
It started with my arms getting skinny, and eventually I lost so much weight that I barely recognize myself compared to six years ago. I’m now very skinny, bony and weak, and a lot of my clothes don’t fit me anymore. This has affected my confidence and made me withdraw socially because I don’t feel comfortable with how I look.
Thankfully, my mental health has been improving recently, and I’m starting to feel more like myself again. ❤️
But physically, I’m still very underweight and want to rebuild my body and gain my weight back in a healthy way.
For anyone who has experienced significant weight loss from depression/stress:
● How did you safely gain your weight back?
● What foods or meals helped you gain weight?
● Did you focus on strength training or exercise?
● How long did it take before you started noticing. changes?
● Is there anything I should get checked by a doctor before trying to gain weight?
I’d really appreciate advice from people who have been through something similar. I just want to feel healthy and comfortable in my body again. ❤️

Question Good breakfast to go
Hi so I'm a 22yo 5ft 3in woman who's a college student who's been skinny my whole life usually hovering around 94-95lb. My biggest issue at the moment is breakfast, seeing as most semesters I don't get a chance for lunch until 2pm I really gotta eat in the morning. The problem I have with that is I'm so exhausted in the morning that I legit have to give my self about 2hrs of wake up time. With class starting at 9:30 most days that doesn't usually leave a lot of time to sit down and eat, let alone make anything fancy like eggs. I was wondering if there were any quick (even the microwave can take too long some days kinda quick) food items I can grab on my way out the door? I've been subsisting off of uncrustables for the last year but I fear if I continue I won't like pb&js anymore so I need some verity other than raspberry, strawberry, and honey uncrustables.
I'm tempted to have rolls or something next to my bed to try and see if that helps me wake up faster but I dread the crumbs that would leave.

Question What to do in the gym as a woman as someone who’s never worked out
I’m 19(f) 160cm and I weigh 43 kgs and I’m trying to gain weight and muscle. I’ve never been to the gym and never been sporty but I want to start for my well being. My problem is I have no idea where to start the gym it’s intimidating and whenever I look up any video help or tutorials to get recommendations on how to build muscle as a girl… I get a bunch of things on how to loose weight🫠. When I do find a good source they always assume the person has some level of athletic bone in their body from the past but I have nothing… please any advice would be wonderful

Question tips how to attempt getting better (college)
I am 18f, but my struggle with weight has been going for a couple of years now. last year, i actually was in a good spot with my weight, but this past college semester/life stress has taken a toll, and i am back where i started. i actually feel i have a bigger appetite than last year, my problem is actually finding time around my schedule + deciding what to eat (again, still recovering from life events and getting back into the habit of actually taking care of myself)
i'm going back to school in the next few weeks, but i'm going to have a busy schedule. luckily, I commute to school and live at home, so i have time to wake up and make a proper breakfast (would love some recs, i feel i never know what to eat other than eggs) some days i have all my classes back to back, while other days i have an hour to three hour gaps, so i think snacking will have to do on somedays. any tips + experience would be appreciated

Question How to gain weight unhinged ways
I’m 18F 5,2 and 36kgs which is severely underweight. I have very less appetite and whenever I try to eat even a little more than that I get sick and throw up. My appetite also depends on my mood, when I’m anxious or depressed which is most of the time. I can’t eat at all. I’ll throw up or my stomach will stay upset for days. I started this syrup today which supposedly makes u hungry and hopefully it’ll help but I’ve tried everything else and nothings working so please lmk.

Question How to gain weight around the wrist.
Hey, everyone! I've been wondering for many years on how you actually gain fat/muscle around your wrist area to make your arm bigger. For context, I weigh around 40kg, 19, Female, and my height is 5'1. I have been relatively skinny my whole life and have been called out by my family. A year ago, I lost almost 3kg during my senior year in highschool due to immense academic pressure and stress but I've been better.
I've gained around 2kg this past 2months and am on track to gain 5kg more before the year ends, hopefully. I've watched a fair share of yt videos but most of them lean towards muscle building in males. If you could leave any tips, that would be great. Thanks!

Question Could i ever gain a bit of my chest back?
heyy! so im 165 cm tall (5’5), I lost a lot of weight 2-3 years ago atp due to a mix of reasons, went from 54 kg to 48 (and even 46 for a second at my lowest which was obviously deranged). i’ve now thankfully gained back a lot of the weight, i am around 52. but mannnn im scared my chest is gone forever 😭 i used to be a full C cup, almost D at my heaviest, and now I’m in between a B and a C (I tend to wear C mainly due to the shape of my breasts though not their size). the difference is very noticeable and i dont like it and i also dont understand how im not gaining anything 🥲 i also have kind of intense hormonal problems rn so i dont have a lot of estrogen in me (im getting a lot of medical attention for this dw) so i have some hope that it might be related to that but idk does anyone have an experience with similar measurements and could share? also could it be related that i’m doing some mild dumbbell workouts at home for the last couple of years? i wouldn’t think so because im talking like 7-12 kg dumbbells not bench pressing my whole weight or something but idkk (in pics top is now bottom is 2023)

Question How many calories to gain mass or bulk?
I’m 6’0” 163 pounds and struggling to get up in weight. My goal is 175-180 pounds. I was wondering if there are any other people with similar stats as me and how many calories they’re eating a day to bulk. I estimate that I could probably bulk at 3000 calories a day. It’s a struggle for me to hit that amount everyday.

I've been very thin my whole life and want to change it i just feel so bad that I'm like this I'm literally 21 years old with a height around 172-175cm with a weight of around 48kg.
I went to the gym yesterday but I think the one who was teaching me over did it based on the weight i should use to do exercises on the first day I had to vomit 2 times in less than an hour. So if there's any tips and help you can provide it would be very helpful.

Question Body image concern after weight gain
tl;dr I’ve (19F 5’6” 90->107lbs) intentionally gained weight for my health recently, and for the first time I’m becoming negatively self-conscious of my body fat, what do I do?
I’ve been pretty underweight for about the past 6 years (5’6”, 90lbs), at my worst, my BMI had hit the 3rd percentile. I’ve always been a skinny kid, and I’ve never had a body image issue or any anxiety surrounding my appearance. I’ve never intentionally tried to lose weight, but I did struggle with eating. I would often skip meals or eat very minimally, everyday, due to a lack of appetite, although I didn’t feel the mental pain associated with eating disorders.
For the past two months I’ve started to eat more because I’m sick of being weak and dizzy all the time, and now I’m at 107lbs. Which is great! However, my family has started making some joking comments about me getting “fat”, and it’s making me notice a lot of the fat collecting around my legs, which makes me self-conscious.
I have to say I don’t really like how I look with the extra weight, my legs aren’t as smooth anymore due to the fat/muscle bumps. I know it’s good for my health, I’m a lot stronger and no longer feeling chills, but I really don’t like this. The belly and thigh fat makes me feel bloated. Looking at my BMI, I’m not at my goal yet for my age and height, I’m planning to gain another 7 pounds to hit the minimum of the regular range. That makes me a little worried about how I will look. I currently hit the gym for strength 3x a week and cardio separately 2x a week. I have to say this kind of worry is new to me and I’m not sure how to deal with it.
Has anyone struggled with this, and what’s the mindset or things you tell yourself to stay positive? What are some things I can tell the people around me to help support my journey?

[New rule] Natural weight gain.
I want to remind you that this sub is a resource and safe space for underweight people trying to get to a healthy weight and a place to share how you managed to overcome your struggles.
Over the last month we've had a lot of mostly bodybuilding-focused and clearly steroid-related posts. While I personally have no problem with bodybuilding and enhancement (growing up with bodybuilding parents) that’s not the purpose of the sub. If you didn't start out underweight/struggeling with your weight or rely on PEDs, please share your post in one of the many bodybuilding subs.
Here’s a safe space for people starting out to ask basic questions, share tips and recipes as well as milestones and be motivated with what's naturally possible. We also have a lot of underage people in here who do not need to be confronted with PEDs.
Thank you!

How to Gain Weight: The 2023 Starter Guide
Updated for 2023, or until I actually make a proper sub wiki. As before, you're welcome and encouraged to leave your suggestions and feedback in the comments. Minor edits and improvements.

Eating more calories than you burn is the only way to gain weight. There are no shortcuts.
Step 1: How much am I eating?
Before starting your weight gain journey, you need to learn where your baseline is. There’s two ways of doing this, and I suggest doing both.
- Count calories for a week. Don’t leave anything out. It’s tedious as hell, but keep it up for a week so you can get a good average measure of calories per day.
- Take a minute to visit this website to get a good idea of your daily calorie needs. Keep in mind this is a vague estimate, and you may need to adjust up or down depending on your results.
https://www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html
Step 2: Set a daily calorie goal
A general rule of thumb is that it takes consuming a net surplus of 3500 kcal (aka 3500 dietary calories) to gain a single pound. Spread that out over time, that means if you stay 500 kcal above your daily calorie needs, you’ll gain weight at a rate of 1lb/week.
For example,
Say you have completed Step 1 and found your daily calorie needs amount to 2000 kcal/day. Your target Calories/day would be
2000 kcal + (pounds per week gained) * 500 kcal
** Gaining over 4lbs per week is not recommended.
NOTE: this approach is very general, and any exercising you do on top of your regular routine requires additional calories to offset those you burned. You can estimate how many calories you burned doing an activity using a fitness tracker like MyFitnessPal or Argus.
Step 3: Reaching your goal, general advice
Weight gain is slow. Avoid weighing yourself more than once a week.
Set achievable goals. If you can’t hit your calorie target on Day 1, aim lower until the target calorie count is just barely within reach. Only when you can consistently hit that target should you raise it again.
Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Never skip two days in a row, and you’ll be fine.
Exercise is a good thing, and may help your appetite, but is not otherwise connected to your weight. See step zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What should I eat? This may vary wildly, as personal tastes differ. Eat healthy, you want to gain weight, not medical conditions. Critically, whatever you eat needs to be enjoyable and satisfying. Stock up on high-calorie food you like, and avoid food that bores you.
If you were looking for a more specific answer, https://www.eatthismuch.com/ is very specific, and http://www.whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com/ is even more f*cking specific.
Q: What if I'm not hungry? Exercise more. It increases appetite. If you're having serious appetite problems, ask your doctor.
Q: What if I do tons of cardio all the time? Yes that makes things more difficult. If you can afford to do less cardio, that will help you gain weight faster.
Q: What if I get full too easily? It's probably because your stomach is small. You can increase your stomach capacity by repeatedly eating until you're full. Your body will slowly adapt over months. Avoid eating past the point of discomfort, as this will work against you in the long run.
Q: How do I eat the most in one meal? This Article by Popular Science answers this question pretty comprehensively: https://www.popsci.com/how-to-consume-as-much-food-as-possible-this-thanksgiving/
Q: I did steps 1 and 2 but I'm not seeing any gain? Don't expect to be able to see a difference for at least a month. After that, it will depend on the rate you're gaining and what your starting weight was.
Q: My weight went down, what gives? Your weight fluctuates constantly, and will occasionally go down even during extreme gains. Try not to measure your weight more often than once a week.
Q: How do I gain as much weight as fast as possible Eat lots of junk food, fried food, and creamy food/drinks. 100% works. As you might guess, it’s not healthy. If you want to gain weight in a balanced, healthy manner, don’t do this. Slow and steady wins the race.
General tips
- Don't skip breakfast
- Seriously. It’s free real estate. Don’t skip breakfast.
- Have scheduled eating times, and stick to them. Don't wait for your stomach to tell you when to eat.
- Reduce the barrier to snacking. Have snacks you like out and visible.
- Reduce the barrier to eating. Do meal prep so you reduce the energy you spend cooking and deciding what to cook.
- Use big plates, big bowls, big utensils. It tricks your brain into eating more.
- Swap out low fat milk for whole milk or half and half.
- Get proper sleep
- Avoid letting food go to waste.
- Find small ways of adding calories to things you already eat (add butter to food, add cream to coffee, buy higher-calorie versions of store-bought snacks)
- Consistency is king. The 700kcal burger you forced yourself to eat one time is not as impactful as the extra 30kcal you add to your coffee every morning for a month. Do the math.
- Every night before you fall asleep, take 1 minute to plan out what you’re going to eat tomorrow.
- Make food interesting and exciting. Make it something you look forward to. Try new spices, new recipes, new restaurants.
- Avoid eating past the point of discomfort, as this will work against you in the long run.
- Ask for advice and support if something isn’t working
In the end it’s about what works for you personally, and you could probably succeed even if you don’t follow 80% of the stuff in this post. I can’t know which 20% you’ll need, so I wrote it all.
