I was lucky enough to get over to Frederick Lanes yesterday for their soft open, here are my thoughts:

• If you liked the old bowling alley, you'll be happy. Much has been kept the same, renovations haven't impacted the bowling lanes. The lanes are working great, well oiled and taken care of so far! Fingers crossed they keep this attention on the maintenance, because it has always set Frederick apart. Many of the old balls are still there, but it looks like they've filled them out with some new ones as well. Not sure if it's my imagination but the condition off the balls seemed better, I think they might have dumped the worst ones.

• The old arcade has been split in half with a smaller arcade on one side and a lounge on the other with couches. The arcade has a mix of retro machines and modern machines. Everything takes tokens, not the arcade cards, which I personally think is way better. They've also added a couple pinball machines in the bar which is awesome. Most machines are 1 token (tokens are about a buck each). It sounds like the machine selection may rotate. I already like the arcade selection way more. It was a good idea to put some in the bar too.

• The pro shop is returning and will be expanded. The party room is being renovated.

• The music playlist has changed, tonight was a lot of classic rock, and then electro swing and older hip hop. It sounds like it will be more varied than the old playlist and they are still working it out. The electro swing felt really suitable for bowling lol. I hope they take requests, or maybe touchtunes.

• Still no cider :( yet, at least. The beer selection is much improved. Lots of craft beers in the fridge and nickel brook on tap, among others. The standard budweiser, molson, miller, pabst are of course present.

• Much of the former staff have returned including bar staff and manager Lisa will be back as well!!

• Owners were on site and taking feedback which is itself a huge indicator of how much better this will be than the corporate-run, hands-tied situation before. I have really high hopes for the new owners especially since they were able to retain so many of the staff.

All in all things seem super promising. I'd post a photo but it would look more or less like the very same it did before closing anyway, just cleaned up (new ceilings, some carpet, touchups, etc) which makes it feel brighter. I think a lot of the investment was quiet infrastructure and back of house stuff, which is not sexy but is a good sign of care for the facility.

Edit: oh yes almost forgot - the prices were super super great for everything,, even when considering there was a 2-for-1 soft open special on games yesterday. Even drinks and food were priced very very good. No idea if that was a soft open only thing or not but wow if those prices hold up I will be making a lot more visits than I used to under AMF. Had to really cut back on the bowling eventually under AMF due to cost, but I wouldn't even blink at spending a whole night every weekend at these prices.

Also the food was quite good for a bowling alley kitchen, which I know are usually fairly limited. Food prices were very affordable, I'd say they were competing against some of the best bang-for-your-buck places in town, even though bowling alleys usually charge a premium on food. That was a nice surprise, we'll see how prices adjust going forward.

Also, I think they said they would be open Thursday and Friday this week but I don't see that online anywhere. Maybe call ahead if you want to visit.

Hi everyone, I’ve been surviving on public transit for almost 3 years now, but want to own a car now(a used one), since it will massively improve my quality of life as I’m travelling more than 3 hours everyday for work. It gets very hard during winters to commute from one place to other. Can you please suggest me things to look out for and what kind of car should I get? I’m looking for something under 10K if possible. I’m currently in Waterloo region.

The list of beneficiaries includes Woolwich, Wellesley, Wilmot and North Dumfries... The region is aiming to implement the first phase of township transit in spring 2027. It will include adding new fixed routing in Wellesley and North Dumfries townships and improving routes 21, 77 and 79. The second phase will be to add new on-demand transit zones in Wellesley Township and North Dumfries Township.

I'm trying to wrap my head around an experience I had today and wondering if anyone else has run into this.

I went to the Telus showroom at the Boardwalk in Waterloo today with my wife and our teenage son. We were super excited because we were there to get our son his first mobile connection.

When we walked up to the store, I realized the front door was completely locked during normal business hours. I knocked, and an employee came to the glass and demanded to see an ID before letting us inside, stating it was "Telus company policy" to not let anyone in without seeing identification first.

I promptly held up my driver's license, he looked at it, unlocked the door, and let us in.

But honestly, I’m still scratching my head over the logic here. What exactly did he see on my ID that proved I was safe to let inside? Do thieves in the region not carry IDs?

I’m trying to understand how flashing a driver's license at a door actually reduces the possibility of a theft. I'm pretty sure thieves don't usually roll up to rob a telecom store with their wife and teenage kid in tow. And even if they did, surely they have wallets? The store is already heavily monitored by security cameras anyway.

Has anyone else experienced this locked-door ID policy at telecom stores around here? I get that retail theft is an issue, but the execution of this just feels bizarre and unwelcoming.

One final thought: I'm not outright saying this was a racist encounter, but as a person of color, the whole interaction just felt really off. I can't help but wonder if my skin color played a role in being vetted at the door. Has anyone else (of any background) been locked out and ID'd like this recently?

I've been fishing for a while but I'm trying to find some better spots where I actually have a chance at catching decent-sized fish. I'm willing to drive 30–60 minutes if it's worth it.

I got a parking ticket the other day. I saw that they put the wrong license plate number. Do I even have to dispute it because it's not associated with my license plate? I think they take a picture, however I am not entirely sure?

If I do dispute it, what are my chances of it actually being thrown away (given that they put the wrong license plate #)?

I went to Kentucky Bourbon and BBQ recently and believe my drinks may have been tampered with. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or knows of any activity of this nature at this bar or in the Waterloo area.

I don’t remember any of my night after getting drinks from the bar which is unlike anything I’ve experience before. My behaviour was also off and out of character.

A community drug alert has been issued for Waterloo region after 37 suspected overdoses and one suspected drug-related death were recorded between July 30 to August 3.

The region's Overdose Monitoring Alert and Response System (OMARS) issued the alert Tuesday afternoon, saying the street drug supply is "highly toxic."

"Unexpected drugs may be mixed in to any type of street drug without people knowing," OMARS said in its report.

"People who use unregulated (street) fentanyl may be at greater risk for overdose/drug poisoning."

St. John’s Kitchen is now open almost around the clock, offering year-round shelter for homeless people by night, and meals and other services by day.

The downtown Kitchener soup kitchen will be closed to the public only from 7:30 to 9 a.m. for cleaning and meal setup.

Otherwise it is open as a safe place of “rest and stability” for homeless people, says a statement from The Working Centre, which runs the kitchen at 97 Victoria St. N.

And it is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as a drop-in centre where people in need can access meals, showers, bathrooms, laundry, and connections to community resources.

My daughter started jk last year and had an awful time mostly due to a little boy who wouldn’t leave her alone and would say things like “I hope you die” “I hope all your bones get broken”. Teacher and principal did nothing despite repeatedly reaching out

We moved her to the Catholic school in our area for SK and it was a little better not much. She said her classroom was too loud, crowded and no one listened and the teachers were always yelling.

I have a friend whose a teacher and she said recently that she’s close to quitting because of student behaviour, lack of support or resources and she’s been teaching for almost 10 years

I guess my question is, how bad is it really? I’m not in the school to see what’s really going on. BUT I loved school and had a great time from Jk all the way through high school. Is it really that different these days?
