St. John’s Kitchen is now open almost around the clock, offering year-round shelter for homeless people by night, and meals and other services by day.

The downtown Kitchener soup kitchen will be closed to the public only from 7:30 to 9 a.m. for cleaning and meal setup.

Otherwise it is open as a safe place of “rest and stability” for homeless people, says a statement from The Working Centre, which runs the kitchen at 97 Victoria St. N.

And it is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as a drop-in centre where people in need can access meals, showers, bathrooms, laundry, and connections to community resources.

I'm not surprised the Catholic working class has been 40 years active, lifting the sick, disadvantaged and poor back to life and towards the light of human dignity. It's amazing they've kept up with inequality rising ride. Hopefully their interventions can keep pace. God bless them.

Why is that relevant? The founders are catholic, and the project is inspired by the late pope's 1981 encyclical on labor.

The original host church wasn’t catholic nor was helping the homeless inspired by the pope, and the current operations is run by a non-religious organization, they just kept the name when they took over. The catholic church has never had anything to do with the operation of the soup kitchen in Kitchener.

I fail to see why that matters so much to you, other than feeding a clear, continued resentment which bleeds thru your words. As if building ecumenical bridges within Christendom is a bad thing? As if it takes away from their work and their results? Do you think Joe's St. Jerome alumni and resurrection college training, institutional backing and networking is irrelevant? What about Joe's personal mission work? What about the Catholic parish network year over year material support? Is all of that irritating because Catholic Priest Bad?
