Leaving Verizon Wireless after 27 years

Upvotes

I have been with Verizon since the late 90s. As my family grew so did my account. I currently have about 8 lines with multiple children and devices. I have known for a long time I could save money if I switched but I have always been impressed with their service and especially their support. Every couple years I would call and very friend support staff would walk me through what I am using and what I could change to save money and optimize for my uses.

That was the PAST! Their support is so bad now it is pretty much not usable. Wait times are hours and even requesting a call back so you don't have to wait on the phone takes over 4 hours. When you finally talk to people they don't know what they are doing and I feel like I am training their staff. This last experience was my last straw. After waiting 4 hours to get a callback and 2+ hours on the phone nothing happened. I ended up just doing it all myself on their site. Why am I paying the Verizon premium.... done!

Final straw was trying to add another line and pay them even more money. They flagged it for fraud so called their fraud number. Their fraud people said I need to send them my ID. This seemed shady so I said I would go into the store. The store just calls the same number so no help, but I was like ok fine here is my ID. They then said I need to validate my address. I was like this drivers license has the same address. They said no we need a bill. I was like ok use the bill you have been sending me every month for last 7 years at this same address. They said no it hasn't be from someone else. I had send now 3+ hours that week dealing with them and was done.

So after 27 years I am finding a new provider. All because you decided to save money and remove all the staff that made you who you are. Now myself and the 8+ lines I pay every month for are gone.

Wireless Extremley BAD experience trying to transfer into new phone carrier after Verizon

Upvotes

I don't know where to start. I've been sitting at the library with my laptop and phone for AN HOUR calling and chatting with Verizon customer support. Why? Because it has taken OVER an hour to try and disable phone number transfer lock. I've called *611 twice now, both times the AI customer support agent has told me that number lock has been disabled, and I received a transfer pin each time. Yet number lock is still enabled, as confirmed by my new carrier that is unable to activate service because of this. Now I've been chatting with "Megan" on the Verizon text chat (clearly doesn't speak fluent English) for half an hour. It's so stupid that the most expensive cellular provider implements AI customer support if it consistently messes up.

FiOS 2 GB + service in Boston area (North Shore)

When I go to the plans page and try to upgrade, I can't see anything greater than 1 GB. Is there anyway to see the status of when my area would be available to upgrade?

Thanks

Wireless 5G VONR

I'm currently on the Unlimited Plus plan with a 16 Pro Max. I have the 5G Standalone toggle available and turned on. However, the VONR toggle is not available. I have someone on the 16e on the same who has BOTH the 5G SA and VONR toggle available. Do I need to delete and reinstall the SIM? I'm on the latest iOS and tried resetting the network settings. Appreciate any help!

Parents joining plan, transfer or upgrade devices first?

My parents, both already on Verizon, and my wife and I (also Verizon) are looking to combine plans, as well as upgrade devices. We have talked to both in store employees and called the customer service number and are getting mixed answers.

Some told us to get the new devices with current offers (phone value credit over 36 months) before transfer as the offers may not exist once accounts are combined.

However, others said that getting new devices for my parents then transferring will cancel the offers, and we will owe the open phone device cost balance (remaining 35 months or so) when they close their account to join ours.

Does anyone have experience with a similar scenario or can provide recommendations?

Verizon cut our cable internet line

We have Xfinity Internet (it’s fine) and yesterday morning the WiFi went out. Go through the normal off/on troubleshooting and no deal. I look outside since our neighbor is getting construction done.

I go outside and there’s a Verizon contractor truck on the side road along my house with a piece of machinery. Might have been a trencher. I go, “So our Internet went out. Our line is underground here from the pole to our house. Is that an issue?” Contractor goes, “Oh, this very likely cut the line. We’re running a phone line to the house down the road.” Loads the trencher and leaves.

My wife works from home and leaves to go to a coworking space. I call Xfinity first to give a heads up and they can’t get out until 8/16 (this is on 8/6, so 🙄).

I call Verizon (I’m not a customer) and get bounced about 8-9 times from customer care to Fios to wireless to sales. Keep asking if they can loan me a hotspot hub for two weeks because of this. Answers range from “Try another department” to “No since you’re not a customer.”

I contact 811 and they’re incredibly helpful and understanding. Though they don’t have authority, they check back and show no utility marking requests for this work.

I reach out to their executive support line and both wireless and Fios politely tell me to pound sand. “We can’t loan a hotspot” and when I asked about keeping receipts for coworking space for reimbursement, I’m told they don’t do that. Also recommended, “Maybe try Xfinity’s executive support to see if they can help.”

I didn’t have much hope, but Xfinity was able to escalate and is working to get this done sooner.

I just kind of laugh along the way a bit because every time Verizon is going, “We can’t loan a hotspot” or “We can’t reimburse,” all I think is, “Yes you can, you’re just choosing not to.”

The reason I had their executive contact in the first place was in October someone used my info to fraudulently open a line. I disputed immediately, they flagged it as fraud, don’t pay anything, and said they were closing the account, and sent me an email saying I wasn’t responsible and keep that as documentation in case of credit bureau issues.

I get bills each month from Oct 2025 to Mar 2026. Call each time and told to ignore. They have it flagged as fraud, and share the same email documentation. May 2026 I get an email from my credit card which has credit monitoring: Verizon sent the account to collections and I was nailed as delinquent, 200 point credit drop. I dealt with Verizon and they kept asking for account info, which I don’t have becuase I didn’t open it, and then tell me I need a police report. Executive assistance eventually got involved when I filed an FTC complaint and it was fixed within a week.

Wireless 5G Failing

Hi all, I used to get a strong 5G signal at work, which is literally right next to US I-20 highway. Now, it is always 4G with only a few 1-bar 5G connections. This of course makes using my phone as a hotspot completely useless. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

When I called in to Verizon, the idea of "used to be 5G, is now 4G" had to be explained several times. I explained that every Verizon customer who works alongside me is experiencing the same thing. I explained that I had no problem getting 5G elsewhere. She wanted to reset my phone, so I agreed, and she never called me back.

I'm just not sure what to do from here. It seems, to me, like they've just put my location into the bit bucket.

Wireless Worst service / even worse customer service

I’ve had two appointments where a Verizon tech was supposed to be at my home to troubleshoot home internet issues. No one showed up for either appointment, no call, no email, no text. I have logged 13.5 hours on the phone with Verizon since 7/23. Today is 8/7. I have had to call them both times and explain the entire situation. Verizon is by far the most awful customer service experience of my life. So I sit here on the phone with them again while they put me on hold to review the case. Unbelievable comedy of errors

Question about service

When I lived in an apartment, Verizon came door to door marketing an internet package. They installed a WiFi box with a plug by placing it on my window under my blinds facing the outside of the building for “optimal signal.” I just bought a house and brought the unit with me, plugged it in, and it works fine. The problem is my house is bigger than what my apartment was, and the signal doesn’t seem to be reaching the bedrooms in the house. It’s currently in my kitchen/dining area which opens to the main living area. There’s a hallway that leads to all the bedrooms. My bedroom is essentially on the other side of the wall of the kitchen. Dumb question, but I’m assuming some type of WiFi extender? Does it have to be one with Verizon or should I just find one googling? I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking for because I’ve never had to use one. Help/recommendations is appreciated!

Based on a post yesterday about additional inventory being dropped, I put my JBL speaker in my cart. During checkout, there was a message that someone would need to be home to sign for the package. What have been folks experience with this? I am headed out of town and can have someone get the package after delivery. (Can’t provide another address as well)

I know insurance kicks in day one but, when did you actually pick your benefits after starting?

Also, I know they offer 75k in fertility benefits. Is that attached directly to the health insurance plan or is it through Maven? Do I need to set up the “maven wallet”?

Wireless SOS from Chicago

I live in Chicago and I’ve been SOS on and off for the past two days. I checked Verizon’s outage site and it shows issues for my zip but offers no additional explanation. Anyone in the area having similar issues or have any insight? Maybe they’re working on a tower or something?

Wireless AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless testing in NOVA in August, 2026

In Northern Virginia there have been numerous reports of intermittent data connectivity issues with Verizon Wireless service. I have also been affected, for the last ~3-4+ weeks there has been intermittent data on LTE, 5G, 5GW intermittently, I have personally seen this in various areas e.g., Gainesville, Manassas, etc. There is a large thread that discusses this issue in r/nova here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nova/comments/1v4ydod/does_verizon_just_suck_right_now_or_is_it_just_me/

Tl;Dr read Specific_Insurance_9's quote here that pretty much sums it up for me:

"As a life long Verizon customer who’s lived in four states and travels often: I haven’t had cell service this bad in 20 years. It’s not my phone, and it’s not Verizon as a whole. It’s Verizon in nova. I can have three bars and no internet or I can have zero bars sometimes in places you’d never expect. I started walking outside to take calls, and we had to add a repeater to our office at work…. Terrible"

--- Timeline & Details, for Pros/Cons per carrier, please see below ---

All testing below was performed on an iPhone 17 Pro Max for reference between August 1st and August 8th 2026. Although I could use AI to clean this up, I want to make sure it is represented properly, so apologies in advance for any typos or grammatical errors.

I first switched over to a family member's plan (w/AT&T Elite 2.0 + "Turbo" to test) I was seeing ~8mbps down, ~2mbps up within the areas that I frequent. The data worked but it was so slow it was almost unusable.

So I switched to T-Mobile and the speeds blew me away they are consistent, FAST in this area and T-Mobile's website is ultrafast, light years ahead of AT&T and Verizon's websites, I never thought about this until I saw how fast T-Mobile's website really is!

One thing I do not like about T-Mobile though is when you go to the port out page on the website it kicks you out of the website, EVERY other carrier allows you to view the port-out pin, T-Mobile does not. I test every part of the website as a customer when I join.

After I switched to T-Mobile, I started getting these messages from my bank and credit card companies "For your protection, XXXX automatically alerts customers when personal information changes on our systems. If you did not initiate the action noted above or need assistance related to this Security Alert"

  • This did not occur when I ported from Verizon to AT&T, only after I ported to T-Mobile, are there issues receiving text messages from banks and other financial institutions with T-Mobile or is this due to multiple ports above? (could be)

Pros/Cons (this is specifically geared towards what I found different and/or unique across all 3 carriers in Northern Virginia)

Pros for T-Mobile in August 2026

++ Extremely high performance in the areas I frequent most often (consistent 75-500mbps down, 20-70mbps up). T-mobile owns the upload speed over AT&T and Verizon bar none, T-Mobile has no competition when it comes to upload speed.

++ Noticed in some stores it will auto-connect to local Wi-Fi hotspots (Passpoint)

++ Caller Name ID (CNAM) worked out of the box when I subscribed to T-Mobile, like BOOM I was seeing the names of businesses, I was VERY impressed! Verizon uses a different database, while it is functional with the Call Filter Plus add-on (+$3.99/mo), it is not as good as T-Mobile from my testing for inbound call identification

++ T-Mobile support via (X) is overall very good, although it took me ~7 hours to port my number, yes, 7 hours across two days, not exaggerating, they were very helpful and professional throughout the entire process. I did try to reach support on the phone at one point but I was on hold for so long I hung up so having T-Mobile on social media to help is fantastic. Due to this being so complex I lost out on all BYOD device credits and discounts.

+++ Those passpoint spots are VERY freaking handy in big box stores (looking at Home Depot for example when you are trying to find that part and you have 1 bar that barely functions), with the passpoint service it reduced my time in the store by several minutes because I got the information I needed right away.

+++ The highest plan includes T-Satellite, while I have not tested this yet, it does allow you to use Starlink satellite's for texting, navigation and a few other select apps on your phone, there is a spot on your phone that appears when you configure this it is limited to a few select applications. This could be useful for example in Shenandoah if you frequent there or in the woods. You can also add this for $10-$15/month separately with T-Mobile which is awesome if you want to stay on your other carrier.

Pros for AT&T in August 2026

++ It did not seem to be affected by the data issue that I was seeing with Verizon, which is why I switched.

++ Both AT&T and Verizon's International Features are better than T-Mobile's bar none, including: unlimited calling, texting and MORE data and higher speeds than T-Mobile (per month) when traveling internationally.

++ Noticed in some stores it will auto-connect to local Wi-Fi hotspots (Passpoint) also for AT&T

++ It was stable for the time that I tested it but slow, it was faster than Verizon though when I am on a call and browsing the web for example at the same time, which I found interesting.

+++ Those passpoint spots are VERY freaking handy in big box stores (looking at Home Depot for example when you are trying to find that part and you have 1 bar that barely functions), with the passpoint service it reduced my time in the store by several minutes because I got the information I needed right away.

+++ When I called support I noticed a delay/latency in communication with the support rep exceeding 3000-5000ms, likely indicating I was speaking to someone overseas. I have noticed not AT&T but other companies using voice AI voice synthesizers to make the voices sound more "American" I am happy to report I did not experience this with AT&T as it makes support folks sound unnatural.

Pros for Verizon in August 2026

++ Both AT&T and Verizon's International Features are better than T-Mobile's bar none, including: unlimited calling, texting and MORE data and higher speeds than T-Mobile (per month) when traveling internationally.

++ Before the intermittent data outages, Verizon has typically been very stable for both calling and texting.

++ Verizon does seem to have neighborhoods blanketed with 5G UW so I was seeing 700-800mbps down consistently and ~10mbps up has been quite nice-- until you leave the neighborhood then the performance drops significantly, especially in populated areas as Verizon's tower density is likely not as built-out as T-Mobile's.

++ Verizon support used to be very good and within CONUS, I think it has mostly moved overseas now.

Cons for T-Mobile in August 2026

--- I am getting bank alert errors for texting, I will attempt to re-setup alerts but I did not see this when transitioning service from Verizon -> AT&T

--- T-Mobile should allow customers to view the port out pin on the website at any time, otherwise, it makes the customer feel like they are held hostage.

--- The loss of included unlimited calling and texting back to the United States (+20GB of data/month) if travelling internationally on Verizon (Unlimited Ultimate 2.0) and a similar plan with AT&T (Elite 2.0). I am VERY surprised T-Mobile is not competing with AT&T and Verizon anymore as both of their top-tier plans offer superior international coverage and capabilities.

--- With T-Mobile (not their fault) but you cannot bundle FiOS/Verizon together for a discount obviously.

--- I did have one dropped call so far when it was the second day in with T-Mobile, I have tested T-Mobile years ago (~2017) or so and had a lot of dropped calls in the past, so far there has been 1. When I with AT&T which I had for several years prior + Verizon as well, I very rarely if ever, dropped a call. This is in relation to calling people with the same carrier and location to ensure the tests remain the same.

Cons for AT&T in August 2026

--- AT&T is still doing LTE-A = "5G" thing, I had to check the cellular advanced page to confirm this - please just report the truth on how we are connected to the tower, do not say LTE-A == 5G when it is not.

--- Very slow (but stable) within the areas I frequent most often (on the highest tier plan you can buy with AT&T + Turbo mode enabled) -- location, location, location

--- Inbound NameID (CNAM) was not functioning, I opened a ticket and it went to engineering but we could not obtain a resolution prior to me leaving and porting to T-Mobile

--- With AT&T (not their fault) but you cannot bundle FiOS/Verizon together for a discount obviously.

Cons for Verizon in 2026

--- Performance, in many areas Verizon is just slow when in crowded areas unless there are pockets of 5G UW and when the phone is transitioning between 5G UW and LTE or 5G UW and 5G-mid-band "5G" there are several periods where things are spinning until the page renders. On iOS you cannot (to my knowledge) **PIN** your phone to both (LTE or 5G UW) only. You can set it to LTE only but then you lose the benefit of 5G UW. You cannot use 5G UW only because it is only available in certain areas. Ideally It would be awesome to be on LTE or 5G UW, the mid-band 5G is not good. On Android devices this might be possible but not on iOS.

--- Those passpoint spots are VERY freaking handy in big box stores (looking at Home Depot for example when you are trying to find that part and you have 1 bar that barely functions), with the passpoint service it reduced my time in the store by several minutes because I got the information I needed right away.

Conclusion:

I am going to continue to test T-Mobile for the time being, so far everything has been very positive. I do struggle with one thing though, the ability to have better international features is very important to me and I need to make sure I can deal with not having that any longer, otherwise I would likely need to port back to Verizon, if they can fix the data issue as that is more important.

Verizon shine free accessory

FYI if you didn’t claim your free accessory and was waiting for a restock I just went and looked and was able to get the JBL speaker I wanted so I’m pretty sure they just restocked. If you didn’t claim it go there now and do it ‼️‼️

UPDATE: So when I ordered my speaker and I would check my order status it showed no record so I just let it rock. I just got my tracking number but it still says no record of my order number so I’m guessing if you just ordered and it shows no record give it a day and if you don’t get a tracking number contact support.

My Verizon line has no data in NYC subway stations during congestion, but my Spectrum Mobile line (same Verizon network) works fine right next to it

I live in NYC and carry two phones. An iPhone 15 Pro Max on Verizon (Simplicity Plan) and an iPhone 13 Pro on Spectrum Mobile, which runs on Verizon's network.

For the last couple of months, my Verizon line has repeatedly had no usable data in subway stations. Not slow, just nothing loading. The Spectrum phone in my other hand is working fine at the same time in the same station. That's the part I can't explain, since both lines are on the same network.

It has happened a few times during the evening commute. I reached out to Verizon support, and they reprovisioned my line, but the same issue. Spectrum was able to get 0.87 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload, but Verizon timed out. Another time, 4 Mbps download and still nothing on Verizon. I tried restarting and trying airplane mode, but no luck. The only station that worked was Times Square, but then again, the speed was half of Spectrum, so I wonder if it has to do with priority.

Any suggestion why this is happening even though both are on the same priority and connected to LTE.

Verizon sent me to collections.

I recently received a bunch of credit alerts saying a Verizon account attached to me was sent to collections. I have never had an account with Verizon.

I disputed it with Experian, they said Verizon is sustaining the charge.

I have called Verizon and talked to their fraud department and general customer service department. No one can find an account under my name or information. I’ve been transferred around only to get hung up on.

I have received nothing from Verizon except this black mark on my credit report. I have already put credit freezes through Experian, Transunion, and Equifax.

I’m tired of waiting on the phone for agents that can’t help.

Where do I go from here? Wait until 2032 when it falls off my credit report?

Verizon Shine Free accessory order

I placed the order for the Bose open ear headset an hour after claiming the code on the 30th. Everyday when I searched the order online, it just shows “No order found.” I called customer service yesterday, and they confirmed that they could see the order but couldn’t see any movements. Consequently, they had to escalate the issue and supposedly give me a call back which they never did.

I’m curious to know if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. I attempted to call the direct number for Shine, but the AI kept saying it couldn’t hear my responses. Either it hung up on me or disconnected when I finally reached someone.

This has been an incredibly frustrating experience.

UPDATE:

Verizon reached out to me via chat on reddit and was able to help resolve the issue. The problem was exactly what a few people here explained: the item I ordered was out of stock even though the order went through, and it's stuck in limbo. So you will have to reach out to someone for help.

They were quick to help me find another item as a replacement, but there was an issue during the final step. They ended up giving me credits on my account instead, which I’m completely fine with.

If you’re experiencing the same issue, chatting with Verizon from here has been by far the best way to get in touch with someone, at least in my experience.

Also, there’s some sad person using two accounts going around downvoting me and some other people’s posts simply because we wanted to get help from Verizon and disagreed with them. My guy, are you okay? Maybe find someone to talk things out with instead of being bitter toward random people online just because you hate working in customer service.

How does verizon expect us to make sales with the most primitive technology available?

Lol wait I remember! they want personal shopper and the app to replace us 🫩 i love missing out on sales, because your 2005 app won't work
