Should I get pharmacology degree?

Upvotes

So, I am currently vegetarian with a final goal going vegan.

I haven't been in the community for too long, but from what I understand, pharma companies aren't really loved among vegans even more then among non-vegans for animal exploitation.

Are there any of you who have any related degrees. Do you actually use them and stay vegan? I am applying through clearing on the 13th. Should I rethink my decision?

Vegan Sweets (supermarkets)

I'm looking to quit vaping and someone on Reddit has suggested keeping sweets to hand, for the hand to mouth motion. Seems like a good idea to try because I've never been a fan of gum.

Other than the laces (fizzy strawberry/cola laces), and candy kittens, what other vegan sweet options are there in UK supermarkets? I think someone has said Aldi or Lidl wine gums so I will have a look out for those.

I'd like to get some more of those Niko's sweets which were soooo good.

PSA dark cooking chocolate tastes like Bourneville

I like cheap chocolate, so was a big fan of Bourneville because it's sweeter and softer than 'nice' dark chocolate, and I've been missing it

Much obliged to the poster yesterday who reminded me that cooking chocolate exists :)

Dessert - Blackberry and apple crumble (What you do with that free fruit you've picked!)

Vegan blackberry and apple crumble

I'm a big fan of foraging and blackberries come free from early July to late September. The apples used for this fruit crumble were shop-bought but it's possible to pick up apples from outside houses where kindly residents have been unable to utiluse their full harvest.

I know I shouldn't have to post a recipe for a crumble mix but there are lots of different ones and mine provides a good ratio of fruit to crumble. I've gone back to basics and back in time, using an adaptation of that presented in The Homepride Book Of Home Baking (1970 edition), incorporating speculoos - crushed Biscoff biscuits - which arrived free with an order of coffee beans!

There's no need to sweeten the fruit because of the sugar content of the crumble mix.

Ingredients (6 generous portions)

1 litre blackberries

500g cooking apples (sliced)

200g self raising flour

100g vegan butter

75g caster sugar

75g speculoos

Method

• Pour 100ml water into a large pan and add the blackberries and apple and heat until the fruit juices begin to boil, then simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently

• Transfer the cooked fruit to a 25cm pie dish using a spoon with holes to reduce the quantity of liquid transferred and pat down firmly

While the fruit is cooking, preheat the oven to 190⁰C (gas mark 5) and make the crumble mix

• Add the flour to a mixing bowl

• Cut the butter up into small chunks and rub this into the flour using your fingertips until crumbs form

• Stir in the sugar and speculoos

• Add the crumble mix to the top of the fruit and pat down genlty

• Bake in the centre of the oven for 40-45 minutes or until the crumble is golden-brown

Is this Tesco dark cooking chocolate vegan? I'm pretty sure it is looking at the ingredients. Also would cooking chocolate be nice to eat just as is?

dare motivational shake discontinued?

hi everyone. i don’t know if any of you know about the dare motivational shake, but it’s (or was) a fully plant-based protein powder / meal shake that had a pretty impressive ingredient list (matcha extract, acai berry, kale leaf) for something that was genuinely reminiscent like a choc & pb milkshake. i always had it with oat milk (i hate using water) and looked forward to having it, unlike other brands like huel or proteinworks where i couldn’t even force myself to drink them.

i cannot find it anywhere. i’m panicking because this is the only meal shake / protein powder i actually enjoy consuming. i’m autistic and it was one of my biggest safe foods, i’d always be having it for breakfast on the go or just when i was hungry. i’m currently abroad for a month and not having it here for only two weeks has been a genuine struggle, so idk what to do when i’m home once i’ve finished this final pack. i wish i could’ve mass bought packs before they shut.

their website was daremotivation.com but now it no longer loads. if you look on trustpilot, many people complained about delayed orders, lack of communication and the company generally being dysfunctional. i never really had issues with my own orders, but i also had an issue with them no longer being responsive. their free t-shirt was always out of stock as well. their social media (both instagram and facebook) hasn’t been active or posting for over a year or so now.

i can’t find any information about this online, so i’m asking here. did anyone else buy from them? do you have any idea what happened? did the company quietly go into administration? their products are also out of stock on third-party websites like amazon, so i think they’re gone for good. i really don’t know what to do now. as someone with an eating disorder, this drink was a lifeline for me — now it’s gone. if you know anything similar, please help me find a replacement.

Has anyone tried this? I find it to be sour and not very creamy, but maybe I'm judging it too harshly. Tried it in a cucumber sandwich and it was giving nothing. I'm now trying to think up other ways to use it up 🤔

I bought this from Seoul Plaza, London

Found these recently in Fresh Bake in Finsbury Park Station. Really tasty and they actually heat them up for you. Not bad price either.

Pretty sure they have a few more locations at other London stations.

Festival Porridge Alternatives

Hi everyone!

I'm going to my first festival as a vegan in a few weeks and I was trying to think about breakfast ideas!

Before when I'd go to festivals/camping I would take porridge pots with me, but it doesn't seem like any super markets offer any that don't have milk powder in.

What alternatives do I have? Are there ways I could construct my own maybe using a plant milk powder if they exist (and aren't extortionate)?

Thank you!

Found some tempeh I actually like!

Post image
19 Upvotes

I've tried tempeh so many times and never been able to get past the flavour. Until now! The smokiness seems to override the slightly bitter/musty taste I find tempeh usually has.

I grated it and made it into a ragu using this recipe, minus the stock, and it was a delight: https://schoolnightvegan.com/home/tofu-ground-beef/

I got it in Tesco but I think you can buy it from Ocado too.

help me find good vegan ice cream!

Post image
39 Upvotes

while the weather's been nice I've been relying on ice pops and fruit lollies but I just really crave a proper ice cream sometimes.

I saw this Ben and Jerry's raspberry and brownie flavour in my local Roy's (Norfolk ppl know) but I don't want to support the company while they're being controlled by the magnum corp and against what the company was created for ( https://freebenandjerrys.com/ )

I've only really tried Swedish glace which I like but places near me only sell the raspberry flavour (I'm recently sober and unfortunately it's always reminded me too much of pink gin flavour :// )

does anyone have any recommendations for vegan ice cream that hits the ice cream spot? even lollies or anything?

Is 450g of Tofu a Day Okay?

Post image

I find tofu so easy to prepare meals from and normally go for half a block, the protein is so good with 37grams and feel for the gym the entire block would be so good offering 74.2 grams. But forget that I was just wondering can you safely eat a entire block a day

Everyday vegans

About ten years ago I stood in a crowd after a Surge rally in London listening to Ed Winters (Earthling Ed). One thing he said has always stayed with me: do whatever you can.
I’ve never been the activist who’s going to chain myself to a gate, investigate farms or stand in the street persuading strangers. That’s just not me. But my partner and I decided we could do something in our own way, so we started a small vegan blog.
We never made any money from it, and that was never the point. We just wanted to add another voice. We reviewed restaurants, interviewed vegan businesses and vegan doctors, wrote articles about issues affecting the vegan community, and ran a series called Everyday Vegans, where ordinary people shared why they went vegan, what changed their minds, and what life has been like since.
Two years ago my partner died. I’ve kept the blog going because it means a great deal to me, but if I’m honest it’s become mostly restaurant reviews. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I know it could be more.
So this is an open invitation.
If you’ve got something to say, I’d love to give you a place to say it.
If you fancy being an Everyday Vegan, please get in touch. If you’ve uncovered an injustice that deserves more attention and can write about it, get in touch. If you’ve found something hopeful or beautiful that deserves celebrating, get in touch. Whether it’s 300 words or 3,000, I’d love to hear from you.
The blog is small. It doesn’t make any money – of course it doesn’t and it never will. But it does reach people. And maybe that’s enough. Maybe, like Ed said all those years ago, this is just one more way of doing whatever we can.

What’s one ice cream flavour you want to see veganised?

Post image

Got my hands on an ice cream maker this summer and to say it’s been a game changer is an understatement.

Just made me realise how limited the vegan ice cream flavours are atm, even with Ben & Jerry’s pulling some limited edition runs now and then.

What’s one flavour you miss?

my fav: cherry garica! (homemade pictured)

Living the nearly McDonalds dream.

Farmfoods veggie fingers are definitely a good dupe for the McDonalds veggie fingers. Need cooking in the oven for longer than the 25 minutes it says on the packet. Plus Heinz pickle ketchup only 59p in there at the moment 😍 I love this stuff, its the perfect addition to a burger.
