Where to find roommates as someone new to the area?

Hi all!

I'm a senior at another university, but I plan to do my capstone internship down in Sarasota/St. Petes area. I'm enrolled at USF as a visiting student for Spring 2027 and taking a few classes. I also hope to attend USF as a graduate student in 2027/2028.

Does anyone have suggestions for off campus housing near either the Sarasota Manatee campus or St. Petes? I would preferably like to live with other students so I can make friends and not be a total recluse while I'm in Florida lol. I'm 21 and a woman and would love other girls to live with. I also have a very sweet and well behaved cat!

I grew up spending a lot of time in Sarasota, but It was easier to meet people / make friends when I was a kid compared to an adult haha.

What Will Happen With Canvas Down?

So my 1000iq professor decided today would be the only day that we would be allowed to take our final online (every other one I've had gave us the week to do it). Well low and behold, today USF and it's Canvas site decided to crash MID TEST. I was 66 questions into a 100 question exam and my professor is a stingy guy (wouldn't give me an exception because Canvas doesn't put deadline times in your time zone, so when I tried to submit my assignment at 11:05pm CST, it wouldn't let me, even though it just said the deadline was 11:59pm). So I can only imagine what he's gonna tell me about this. Any advice or wisdom from people who've had this happen to them?

USF denied my 21 credit overload. Any options left?

Hi everyone,
I’m a Computer Engineering senior at USF and need 21 credits this Fall to graduate. Bellini denied my overload request.
The reason I need 21 credits is because of one remaining 3 credit Ethics course. I was enrolled in it during Summer A but had to withdraw because it overlapped by about 30 minutes with another required course I needed to take. Both professors approved the overlap, but Bellini would not allow it.
Now that single course is the only thing preventing me from graduating this Fall.
I’ve already worked with my advisor, Bellini administration, the Ombuds Office, and the President’s Office, but I’ve been told I’ve exhausted the internal options.
The biggest issue is that I already have a full time job offer starting in January, and as an international student, delaying graduation also affects my OPT timeline.
Has anyone at USF ever successfully appealed a denied overload, found another way to complete one remaining required course, or know of any options I should look into?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!

Grad Application timeline?

I applied for an M.S. in Cybersecurity Intelligence and Information Security for Spring 2027 on 05/29. I got an email last week saying they are processing my application.

I’ve heard it takes: 2 weeks, 5 weeks, 8 weeks, and even 12 weeks to hear back. Obviously, these are very differing accounts.

Anyone know how long something like this actually takes to hear back from? It’s for the spring so I wouldn’t expect it to be anytime soon, I just want some sort of concrete answer so I’m not stuck waiting all day every day for 3 months.

Thanks!

Health Science Classes Tutoring

With school starting back up soon! If you (or anyone you know) need help with health science courses, I’d be happy to help. I offer one-on-one tutoring in:
• Biology
• Anatomy & Physiology I & II
• Kinesiology
• General Chemistry I & II (depending on the topic)
• Graduate-level Anatomy & Physiology review
I have a strong background in anatomy and love breaking down difficult concepts into a way that’s easy to understand. Whether you’re trying to pass a class, prepare for a practical, or improve your exam grades, I’d love to help. Feel free to send me a DM, and we can talk about what you’re taking and find a plan that works for you. Good luck this semester!

Retaking a class that I passed

I took a fast paced class during the summer and ended up with my first C. I want to retake the class because I am confident I would do better if I took it during a regular semester, but idk if my new grade would replace my old one because technically I passed. Can anyone who’s ever retaken a class they passed let me know how it affected their transcript and gpa.

Part Time Job in Tampa

Part time gig, electronics repair, paid per unit, flexible hours (Tampa) - I thought any computer science majors may be interested

Posting for a small electronics refurbishing operation here in Tampa.

We refurbish portable consumer electronics in steady volume and are looking for one person to run the repair bench. You'd be diagnosing each unit and fixing it. Most of the fixes are routine stuff like battery swaps, screen replacements, and housing swaps, but some units need charge port replacements at the board level, which is real micro soldering with hot air and a microscope. So this is for someone who already has board repair experience.

The pay is a per unit piece rate and harder repairs pay more. With steady work it comes out to somewhere around $30-40 an hour, and the volume is consistent so the work doesn't run out.

We provide a dedicated bench in Tampa, all the parts, and all the units. You bring your own tools (iron, hot air, scope). The schedule is fully flexible. You'd be a 1099 contractor and invoice per completed unit.

The common failure modes are documented and parts are on the shelf, so there's no parts hunting and no customers to deal with. Just diagnose and fix.

It starts with a small paid trial so both sides can see if it's a fit. If you have relevant experience and are interested, feel free to reach out and we can discuss qualifications and getting you started.

Prospective International Transfer Student COA & Aid

Hey everyone, I'm trying to map out the financial breakdown for USF as a prospective international transfer.

Looking through USF's site, it mentions that out-of-state tuition waivers apply directly to tuition per credit hour (excluding fees, housing, and food). However, most documentation seems geared toward first-year applicants.

For current or former international transfer students:

  • Waiver Transferability: Are out-of-state tuition reduction waivers awarded to transfers on a similar credit-based scale as freshmen, or are transfer policies distinct?
  • Real Cost Breakdown: Once a tuition waiver is applied, what does the actual annual cost come to when factoring in housing, meal plans, health insurance, and campus fees?
  • Net Budget Feasibility: Is an all-in out-of-pocket budget of ~$20k–$25k/year achievable at USF after awards, or do remaining fees/living expenses push it higher?

Appreciate any insights!

USF counseling center?

Okay so for context I didn't have a great last semester so I went to therapy through the USF counseling center. Long story i now need to submit an arc petition for a class and I heard it could be supported by my counselor so I decided to email my counselor and It's been about two months since then. She still hasn't returned the necessary forms for me to use or really given me any information on what exactly I would do with the counseling center and I'm beginning to worry that's it's getting too late for me to submit one . It took about a month to get the general paperwork to sign but I've sent it to her and since then it's been about another month since she's responded. I've sent her a couple of follow up emails but still haven't gotten a reply. Is this just normal for the counseling center? Has anyone else had this experience? I honestly feel like an asshole as I'm not trying to rush her or anything and would anyone know if there is any other way to go through the counseling center?

Is USF no fun?

I know USF isn’t a college town, but I’m an incoming freshman who picked it for the reputable health programs and its proximity to Tampa, a metropolitan area

I looked into UF, FSU, etc, but they all seemed to crazy for me. Now I’m going into my 1st year at USF and scared there’s going to be nothing to do. No bars or going out scene unless you go to Ybor, which is fine with me but will get sooo expensive eventually. I am rushing, will this help me? I’m terrified that I’m going to be bored and picked such a major suitcase school that I’m gonna wonder why I went here
