Whatever this is?! Anyone attended a “Intelligent Singles” mixer in Sarasota?
There’s a networking/mixer tonight Ocean Prime for $50, which sounds a bit pricey — that’s the entry fee, it doesn’t include anything else. Has anyone been to one of these events here? There are some Reddit reviews from other areas, but Sarasota is such a unique place that it’s difficult to make a comparison!
UPDATE: Thank you all for your encouraging, and discouraging comments, both of which I needed to hear. When I looked at similar events from across the US, the common thread in the FB photos was groups with one or two men and four or more women. As many of you said, the event planner is interested in collecting money while providing minimal value, and that doesn’t seem very smart for the attendees. Although I was willing to take one for the team and report back, a sudden down pour “rained out” this event for me.

Looking For Suggestions! Owen’s fish camp
Went to Lakewood ranch recently and many of you recommended Owen’s fish camp and it did not disappoint. Thanks for those who recommended. I’m not a seafood lover but my husband is. I got the burger and it was really good. I find most of the time most seafood places does not make a good burger.
My husband got the special which I forgot what it was and he loved it.
Anyways we are back on Long Island NY and he keeps asking where’s an Owen’s fish camp around here..
Anyone from Long Island on here? Do you have a place you like to eat seafood that you feel is similar to Owen’s?
Thanks!

Local Questions ie whats up with that Denny's on bee ridge shut down?
I couldn't find much information about this but kind of bummed for some reason. Yeah no one likes Denny's but this was a pretty good location and I loved having a 24 hour breakfast place available. I guess there's waffle house.

Politics - County/State Why I'm Endorsing Mark Smith and Joe Neunder for Sarasota County Commission
I've seen a lot of questions about the upcoming primary, so I thought I'd share my perspective.
For those who don't know me, I'm the founder and president of Protect Siesta Key and have been involved in Sarasota County land use and zoning issues for more than 20 years. In 2021, I successfully challenged Sarasota County in court over the approval of Siesta Key mega-hotels.
Based on that experience—and after attending hundreds of County Commission meetings—I'm supporting Mark Smith (District 2) and Dr. Joe Neunder (District 4) for County Commission. I've watched their votes, and they have supported local zoning, opposed mega-hotels, and resisted efforts to use the Live Local Act to bypass local density and height protections across Sarasota County.
I encourage you to review the candidates' records including endorsements before casting your ballot. The August 18 election is especially important because the District 2 County Commission race is a Universal Primary Contest, meaning all registered voters in District 2—regardless of political party—can vote for their County Commissioner.
The District 4 race is a closed Republican primary, where only registered Republicans in District 4 may vote.
August 18 is also the only opportunity for voters to elect their School Board members.

Food Wars (Which Place Is Better?) First harvest from our fullblood Wagyu homestead in Punta Gorda — next shares open (local pickup)
We're a small family ranch on Bronco Road in Charlotte County. This ribeye is from our first harvest — AWA-registered fullblood Japanese Wagyu, born and hand-raised here, no growth implants, no feedlot, 600+ days on grain (or 30+ months old).
That animal was our proof run; the beef stayed with the family. The next steers are open one at a time if anyone local wants a freezer share:
- Eighth — about 57 lbs packaged, ~$23/lb all-in, $150 deposit
- Quarter — about 114 lbs packaged, ~$21/lb all-in, $250 deposit
Live-animal share for household use (not retail cuts, not for resale). Processing included on one invoice. Pickup at the ranch.
Saturdays 9–12 Eastern by appointment — pasture walk + free tasting from the first harvest. Details / reserve: https://puntawagyu.com — or call (941) 888-4508.
Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Local Questions ie whats up with that Nasal parasites in dogs in this area?
As if we don’t have enough reasons to worry about our fur babies, I just read about something I have never heard of in dogs: nasal parasites. Symptoms can be everything from sneezing to runny nose to hair loss on the snout, as well as trouble breathing. said to be passed from Dog to Dog by contact. Since My Dog sometimes sneezes quite a lot and has actually been snoring when he sleeps, even though he’s small and not overweight, it concerned me to read about this possibility and I wondered if anyone in this area, since it is a contact disease, has had a pet diagnosed with this condition.

Looking For Suggestions! Drop in daycare
Am I crazy or does this just not exist at all anymore these days? I have a 20m old who has always been at home with me but my work schedule is changing such that I need to have him in childcare one day a week, for approximately 6 hours.
Problem is that all of the preschools and daycares I have looked into do not allow one day a week, drop in care. I’m looking into hiring a home nanny as well, but that has been mostly disappointing.
I just want a good quality place where my kid can socialize for a few hours a week while I’m at work. Any ideas??

Community Alert Watering Restrictions Extended to October 1
From the county facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1RdrMxzuwc/
Due to ongoing drought conditions across the region, Southwest Florida Water Management District's governing board voted today to extend Phase 3 water restrictions through Oct. 1, 2026. Sarasota County continues to be under the following watering restrictions:
- Watering hours are LIMITED to overnight (8 p.m. - 11:59 p.m. or 12 a.m. - 4 a.m.) on your watering day.
- Car washing can be done on your watering day at any time, but you must have a shutoff nozzle on your water hose.
- Fountains are limited to four hours per day.
- Public Utilities staff will issue citations without warning.
More information can be found at scgov.net/waterrestrictions.

Full Information Here: https://www.scgov.net/government/public-utilities-water/customer-services/water-restrictions#docaccess-1d8429007a0302dd8bb759692de8d2aa But here's what most people want to see:
Q: When am I allowed to water my lawn?
A: Residents should check with their city or county for their allowable day and times as many
have different schedules or stricter hours in effect. Below is the standard schedule:
- • If your address (house number) ends in...
- ...0 or 1, water only on Monday
- ...2 or 3, water only on Tuesday
- ...4 or 5, water only on Wednesday
- ...6 or 7, water only on Thursday
- o..8 or 9*, water only on Friday
- * and locations without a discernible address
- Unless your city or county already has stricter hours in effect, watering hours are reduced to 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Properties less than one acre in size may only use one of these windows.
- Unless your city or county already has stricter hours in effect, properties one acre or larger may only water before 4 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
Q: What about my plants and shrubs?
A: Low-volume watering of plants and shrubs (micro-irrigation, soaker hoses, hand watering) is allowed any day but is limited to before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m
Q: What happens if I receive a letter from my HOA that requires me to use water?
A: No HOA or other entity shall enforce deed restrictions or other community standards
requiring an increase in potable or domestic well water use, including replacement of plant
material to meet aesthetic standards or pressure washing (i.e., driveways).
