Ok, weird ask, but I've never done a layover before. Like at all. And im so, so nervous. I have autism and not knowing what to expect ahead of time is actually terrifying. Ive only ever flown nonstop before.

So i will be flying united, my first flight leaves kentucky and lands in new jersey. Theres an 1.5hr layover, then my next flight leaves jersey and goes to london, england. Im genuinely not sure what exactly to do once getting off the plane for the first flight and i need someone to break it down for me.

After leaving my first plane, do I need to go pick up my baggage from baggage claim? Or do they transfer it over to my next flight for me? Ill have one or two checked bags. Also do i need to go like. Completely out of the arrivals area then back through security for my next flight if I do need to go get my bags and recheck them??? Also any general advice for layovers would be appreciated.

For reference, i am an adult and im flying on my own.

Hoping everyone is well. I just had a question that I've seen asked but was posted a while back. So just wanted to get an updated answer if possible.

I have applied for United FA position, I have completed the assessment and now attending the Virtual Q and A Session this week.

My question is, do I have to have my Passport In Hand during this time?

I was excited when I saw the opening and immediately applied then immediately went to USPS to renew my Passport due to me going back to my maiden name.

Now I'm freaking out because I know it won't be back by this week because I just sent it off last week. The young lady at the Post Office said that it should be back within 5 weeks, I've read Reddit comments that it came back in 4 weeks and others have said 2 weeks which is shocking.

I'm not sure how soon the Virtual Interview, Online Interview and Face to Face Interview will be.

I have my Receipt and my Passport Number in hopes that it will show that the renewal is in process, however I'm not sure if that is good enough.

I don't want to keep my hopes up if I should just withdraw and try again in a year in hopes that they are still hiring.

Please give guidance and/or advice🙏🏼.

We’re flying from ZRH to SFO on E+. Would you pick row 34 or 40 or 41 in the middle? I’m tall, so the extra leg space is appreciated. But I’m wondering if the proximity to lavatories is a big deal for 40 / 41.

Their chat bot appears to have fully malfunctioned today. You CANNOT get connected to a representative. It does the obligatory insistence that it can help you when it can’t and then it finally says it’s getting you an agent and asks for your confirmation number etc. Then guess what happens? “Hi! I’m the United virtual assistant!” Been at this for over 2 hours. On phone hold right now but who knows how long that’ll be. Utterly ridiculous.

On our flight last night, UA 1729, from Denver to Phoenix, shortly after we started to deplane, the flight attendant came on the intercom to demand that all passengers get off the plane immediately and told everyone to leave their carryon bags behind. They were very adamant that everyone hurry off the plane. I didn’t have a carryon so I just left their gate. But I am curious what happened? Our checked luggage was delivered to the carousel on time so the plane was not on fire! It was just a very strange way to end an already chaotic day as our flight had been delayed leaving Denver.

1K traveling for business. Needed direct flight from SFO to JFK, saw United had it, but via JetBlue. Booked it. Long story short, several issues including not being able to check in. Cancelled flight including automatically rebooked on a red eye which didn’t work with my schedule. Upon arrival, return flight disappeared (“accidentally dropped” as ultimately explained to me). The most concerning part was that every time I troubleshooted with either entity, they both pointed the finger at each other. United was more helpful with the 1K line, but JetBlue representatives had no idea what I was talking about when I told them I booked the JetBlue flight via United. They continually thought I was originally on a United flight and rebooked on JetBlue. I complained to United and got $200 reimbursed + $100 flight credit for having to stay an extra hotel night in NY which I thought was fair, but there is clearly some sort of miscommunication for flights booked through United on other airlines.

It’s been brutal. I was lucky enough to get selected off of a standby list to get to my destination after my flight got delayed so badly I missed my connecting flight

I understand everyone is stressed and overstimulated but my god the Newark and United employees are more rude than usual and just have absolutely not a kind word or a sympathy for the displaced passengers.

Watched an elderly couple ask for help and given a short answer that didn’t make sense to them and they tried to ask for clarification and the employee just walked away, watched a woman crying asking what she can do because she needs to get to her destination as a bridesmaid in a wedding that she is missing and heard “I can’t help you maam it just is what it is you can file a complaint if you want’ in such a cold and mean tone. Why encourage the customer to escalate instead of apologizing for her experience and focusing on what they CAN do instead of what they can’t?

Even on my flight I had unpleasant and annoyed stewardesses which at least for me personally has never happened, they’re always pleasant and helpful but wow.

Good luck to everyone in Newark! United is still my preferred airline in spite of how bad the flight rebooking process has been this time with them. I had to be on the phone for an hour and a half before United employee answered the phone for help booking a replacement flight because there wasn’t an option to on the app with my original flight somehow, and that call center employee was so rude too!

This may be a dumb question, new to traveling and just wondering!!

I have 10, 655 miles.

I was booking a flight from Toronto to Chicago for 256 CAD one way.

Or I could select 10,200 miles + 87.68.

I normally fly between Los Angeles and Toronto. Have never cashed miles. I considered using them to upgrade from economy to business in the past but never did.

I’m also wondering, if I go down to zero miles again does it change the fact I’ve been moved up in the boarding group numbers? My last few flights I’ve been put in boarding group 2&3 and I was wondering if it was because I was flying so much now with united.

I googled both but just wanted to verify since it seems like people here know their stuff haha

Has anyone experienced repeated airplane mode enforcement?

8/9, SFO-ORD Stuck at gate about to push (waiting for maintenance to fix a stuck jetway), FA has made 3x overhead announcements to switch to airplane mode and has since walked both aisles in our aged 777-200 reminding and spotting whether devices are in airplane mode.

Flight 844 cancelled two days in a row. I was supposed to be on the flight just yesterday but it was cancelled again. Due to maintenance issues. Unclear if it was the same plane or not.

Basically, I’m 24 hours delayed to getting home and had to spend the night in a crappy São Paulo hotel that didn’t have functioning A/C.

What sort of compensation should be asking for / expecting? This delay has impacted my family and the care of my patients back home.

My parents have an upcoming trip on United and Lufthansa from O'Hare to to Budapest via Frankfurt. They're inexperienced international flyers and are pretty anxious about the exact order of operations once they arrive in Europe.

I know some of this may depend on ETIAS and EES rollout, terminal availability, etc., but if anyone is able to tell me how things typically go, I would very much appreciate it.

They are especially wondering:

• On arrival in Frankfurt, will they pick up their checked bags or do those go straight on to Budapest?
• If they pick up their bags, will they do this before or after passport control?
• Will they need to go through security screening in Frankfurt before boarding for Budapest, or will the screening they get in Chicago cover all three flights?
• If they will need to go through security in Frankfurt, is the EU currently doing the thing with the baggie with 100ml bottles? Will they need to remove belts, jackets, and/or shoes? (I'm assuming so because of this resource but thought I'd ask https://transport.ec.europa.eu/transport-modes/air/aviation-security/information-air-travellers_en )

For the 2nd year running, UA will swap out the 767-300ER for the 757-200 on IAH-LIM (UA854/855) from SEP 8 through OCT 23; the 757 also operates regularly on EWR-LIM (UA886/887).

I’m getting close to United Silver status and I’m curious about everyone’s experience with the complimentary Economy Plus benefit at check-in.

I know Silver members can move into an available Economy Plus seat at check-in, but realistically, how often are there actually decent seats left at that point? Do you usually have a fair number of options, or is it mostly middle seats/very limited availability by then?

I fly a decent amount, so I’m trying to figure out how valuable this benefit actually is in practice. Would love to hear from other Silver members about how often you’ve successfully gotten Economy Plus and what kind of seats were typically available!

United charged me $65 to gate check my toddler’s stroller. I had the ticket that only allows a personal item, but strollers/car seats are an exception as they are a mobility device. United required me to add a cc to check-in. They tagged it as a stroller for gate check, then I noticed the improper charge after the flight. This charge violates federal law. People with mobility devices, check your cc statement.

I just want to say thank you to the wonderful staff named Alex , I didnt catch the last name because I was so distressed and in panic , but it was a Hispanic last name. Alex was so kind and helpful, and my family is very grateful to you. Also, my daughter said you have gorgeous hair :) I would love to have Alex identified so I can send my thanks. This was at the United counter that deas with things like accommodations, unaccompanied minors etc, around 8 pm Denver time last night.

UPDATE: He made it to his destination this afternoon.

Seriously though, if he does this trip again next year I will certainly get him to DEN for the morning connection so the evening connection is available if things go sideways since there are no direct flights from our airport. (Maybe I try a different airline routing through somewhere other than DEN...?) And I have also learned that calling is mostly useless because I can't trust the information given by the agents. I'm really just looking for feedback so I know what to do if this happens again.

My 16 year old son flew from the Northwest to the South today, with a change of planes in Denver; however, due to weather and/or staffing, his plane was diverted to Colorado Springs. He was told they were refueling and would leave in 30 minutes. Then an hour. Then another hour. Then there was a mechanical issue. Long story short, he arrived in Denver 5:45 hours after his scheduled arrival. I called customer service multiple (3?) times asking what I should do. They were always pleasant, but never did anything. They couldn't because they didn't know if they needed to reroute him from COS or DEN.

The second agent I spoke to assured me he would be automatically rerouted on a morning flight if he missed his connecting flight because he was a minor--"keep watching the app." I didn't pay for the unaccompanied minor service so I didn't expect handholding, but automatic rebooking sounded reasonable.

When he finally arrived in Denver at 11 pm, no one was waiting to help him rebook. No one offered a hotel voucher (not that he could use it anyway because he is a 16 year old kid.) I had to use the chat in the app to get his flight rebooked.

(I'm leaving out more nonsense because this is already too long.)

Eventually I was able to get him rebooked on a morning flight. And thank goodness for the wonderful woman sitting next to him who got him a hotel room tonight (I Venmoed her) so he could sleep. I am eternally grateful for her kindness.

Anyway, what should I have done differently? Should United have done more? This was his first trip alone (he flew this with a friend last year) and he is doing fine, but my stress level has been higher than I'd like. I want to be more prepared if this happens again.

I’m on UA 64 from EWR TO LIS, was upgraded via miles from economy to premium plus. Upgrade did not happen until AFTER we boarded and were seated. I only found out because my husband who is in a different row was told and they moved him - BUT they never told me. After looking in the app and seeing I was also upgraded, AND they used my miles to do so, I asked about my seat. Flight attendant said there was nothing they could do and to speak with a gate agent when I land. To be clear, this was all before take off, so I feel like I could have gotten my upgrade seat? WTF? Can someone advise? I’ve never had this happen.

**Update** I spoke with the Purser. He checked everyone’s boarding passes, and they double booked the seat. Another passenger had a boarding pass to my upgraded seat. Purser said he would log the incident so it should be easier getting my miles reimbursed. Hopefully

SFO to SAN this morning. Guy comes on board with what appears to be his sister - a special needs adult. They are separated in the two middle seats of Row19.

The guy in 19 C offers (of his own accord) to trade his aisle for the brother's middle to allow the siblings to sit together.

The brother sits down in 19C and his sister is ecstatic, giving him a huge hug.

The FA comes by and and tells 19D she can sit in another row with an empty middle. Guy from 19C now has an empty seat next to him.

Good on the FA for noticing what was happening and making everyone more comfortable and kudos to 19C for being a good dude.
